The county I live in has a volunteer list the courts keep in event they can’t pull enough random jurors. A lot of senior citizens sign up for it to have something to do I guess…and to get the per diem.

isn't the suicide attempt defense the same one Newman used to get out of a speeding ticket? Genius.

Yea, he claimed the reason he was speeding was because Kramer called him to tell him he was suicidal. Because Kramer failed at becoming a banker 😂

I've been on two juries as well and found them equally as fascinating! It's really interesting when the deliberations come up and you have to decide whether or not the prosecution met the beyond the reasonable doubt threshold. Like yeah, we all think he did it, but aren't quite sure if it was adequately proven. One guy we just barely decided the threshold was met, and afterward the judge told us he was so relieved we found him guilty... guess the guy had a HUGE rap sheet but of course we couldn't hear about it before the decision (rightly).

I love this podcast it's funny, entertaining and it's wholesome; and that's why I think it's really cool UA-cam showed me an ad for a drink to grow my little buddy while I was watching.

i was summoned once. it was a federal case so i had to travel 3 hours. i decided to go the night before because i had to be there at 8am, and there was a snow storm coming. hotel cost 80 bucks and i spent like 40 in gas. i was there about an hour and a half, got dismissed, traveled around hitting up game stores and resale shops before I drove home. Storm was done by that point. 2 weeks later i got a $550 check in the mail. easiest money I've ever made.

I got summoned recently in my hometown after I moved to a new state, so that was a good excuse to finally update my driver's license and prove I'm not there anymore lol

Just for context as I worked in criminal law as a paralegal for years, murder cases often go to trial even if the defendant is dead to rights because there's often not much the prosecutor can offer unless it's a death penalty state and the defendant might as well take it to trial and roll the dice. You never know what can happen with juries. Sometimes there can be jury nullification where someone on the jury hates police and they don't convict on principle etc.
Also when you get called for jury duty there's a really good chance you won't be impaneled just based on the numbers game. If you don't want to serve just say you can't be fair for whatever reason.

A friend of my mom's says she gets out of jury duty by just straight up telling the judge that she's racist and will vote guilty if the defendent is black lol. Seems to work.

I had jury duty when the courthouse was still new... i was empaneled, and noticed in the hallway from the deliberation room we were in, to the court room, there were these big windows, and you could see the Lizzie Borden B&B right across the street... i wondered if that was a design feature, lol
A cousin of mine's father-in-law was a white shirt in NB and then at the new Fall River court, they are pretty chill.
Recorded conversation: he probably called the girlfriend from jail and wasn't smart enough to realize those lines are recorded... oh, just got to that part....

I work in the criminal justice system, vaccinated and boostered - still wouldn't enter a courthouse without a mask right now. Way too much unmasked/unvaccinated traffic in one enclosed space.
I subbed to you guys for Cinemassacre commentary, but I'm a crime nerd too so this was interesting. Hopefully the defendant won't reoffend once he's released.
