  • On May 1, 1999, Erik Woods had the great pleasure of premiering the soundtrack to STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE by John Williams to the world on his soundtrack radio program, CINEMATIC SOUND. Little did he know that while his show was on the air, the server and network at Mohawk College, the home of C101.5 FM, were dying... and it was all because of this show. Here's the story of how a little soundtrack radio program disrupted internet service at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario for three days!

Thanks Andy! I know... 25 YEARS!!!! Where in the world has the time gone? It seems like yesterday that I was presenting this very show. The entire days activities still remain so vivid in my memory. Every time I listen back to the broadcast I'm transported back to that old studio. I can cleary recall the colour of the board, the sound of the CD players spinning up, the music blasting through those massive speakers. That place was a home away from home for me.

The story of this “little thing” never gets old. Congratulations on this 25th anniversary & thank you for all your time & effort in showcasing motion picture composers & their music. Well done sir.

Thanks for saying that. As I said in the video, this is my "Al Bundy" story... but it also helped validate the show. It's tough to know how many people are listening when you are on college radio, especially when you are competing with larger commercial stations, but when my Sony rep. told me that I was getting the WORLD BROADCAST PREMIERE of the one of the most anticipated scores of all time... I knew that what I was doing was important; important enough for a massive label like Sony Classical to offer me, a guy with a niche soundtrack show on a Canadian college radio station, the broadcast premiere of a Star Wars score. They could have easily given the premiere to any of the big classical stations in the United States or even the big classical station in Toronto, but my rep at Sony was so good to me that I've always wondered whether she went rogue and did this on her own without anyone else's approval. Man, I wish I could remember her name. She was so sweet, kind and supportive. Anyway, that's when it really hit me that I was doing things right and that my reach was further than I ever anticipated. In three short years I went from having a show that sparked a few students in a local bar to start having debates about their favourite films to having the world eagerly awaiting for me to hit play on the CD player so they could, for the very first time, hear new melodies from a Star Wars score they have never heard before.

Thanks for sharing the story. Wish I could have heard it back then on that day. I do remember going out late with a friend and buying the album and listening together on the drive home. Only album ever did that for. The excitement was so huge. Now I must go listen to it again in honor of the 25th

The thing is, my communication with Sony Classical concerning this wasn't done via email, it was done over the phone. I needed to know instantly what was going on so I called up my rep. the next morning and she told me the news.

What did you do about the track titles?

Ah... yes. I didn't mention track titles at all. All I said after each suite was, "That was a suite of music from John Williams' new score to Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace"
