In New York Harbor and others there are two sets of pilots, the one in this video is the "Bar" pilot who brings the ship in from outside the harbor. The other is the "Docking" Pilot who meets the ship once it's inside the Verrazanno Narrows and guids it through the inner harbor and puts it alongside the dock. They have traditionally worked for the Tugboat companies and we're senior captains. Eventually fewer worked off the tugs and now it is a rarity but the tugs still bring them out to the ship to relieve the Bar pilot. Leaving the harbor is just the reverse, the Docking Pilot sails the ship, takes it out to the anchoage or the Narrows where the Bar pilot takes over and takes the ship out to sea.

Bobby Brown and Danny Boylan are the best!! I've known them for years. Bobby retired bringing in the QE2. A great honor for a man who had so many years on the waters of New York Harbor. Danny I've known since I was a kid. His son is a Sandy Hook Pilot today. Bless all of these fine people who provide a great service to all New Yorkers.

How much do harbour pilots make ???im so curious
Probably somewhere around $130-150k. That being said, you need a lot of qualifications to be considered for the job.

Daniel Zorovich Pilots in LA make like 230-250k a year. I’m sure New York is around the same or a little less.

Great video, except the Sandy Hook Pilots do not bring any ships “into the berth”. They bring them from sea to the entrance of the harbor. Then a docking pilot boards the ship and they bring it the rest of the way in, to the berth.
