- As the unemployment statistics once more start to head up, BAFTA winning film-maker Brian Woods takes us behind the numbers to the people they represent.
Filmed throughout 2009, and seen in part through the eyes of the children, Jobless tells the interwoven stories of several families, across the length and breadth of Britain as both husbands and wives cope with losing their jobs, in most cases for the first time in their lives.

My little boy has offered in the past and would do the same for me as well. Of course we'd never expect it of our kids, but it's such a lovely thing for them to think of it off their own back and be so thoughtful about other people.
What are you talking about ,the little bugger only offered her dad 10p if he needs it for his car payment and MAYBE 50p if he needs more ! For a kid who's declared herself to have plenty of money that's very stingy She's a little Scrooge ! 😳

It can sometimes be hard to empathize with someone who is actually going through a stressful circumstance or experience till they themselves experience it.
@@lucyzellars6230 The Legendary singer Bob Marley mad a song with a verse" Who feels it knows it". Pretty much sums up your point. I was recently laid off from a company I have been at for 30+ years in many different job titles. Suddenly, I am in solidarity with people down on their luck. My fear is that I will end up not finding a job in my field and having to take anything available. Or even worse finding not job at all and ending up homeless. I hear there are all these opportunities for work online, but I have no experience thereof.
You realise how lonely you are when unemployed.
Sure, my family have supported me, but it seems like no-one else cares, not employers, nor the job centre, nor the government or society.
There is a stigma and you feel like a loser, you are labelled a "dole bludger", and looked at differently.

Why would a company call someone in for an interview only to tell them they are over qualified? It makes no sense at all.
Alot of companies are so badly run, youd be amazed.
Interview quotas. Plain and simple. We had a target we had to hit before we could hire someone - for every position available, I had to interview 25 people at that one major online auction site. Not doing so gets you written up.

They fear you'll take their job. Its insecure employers.
I don't know why they do that, but the secret is...never tell them how much education you have. It makes them feel insecure.
One of the worst feelings, is being without a job, while having kids, wife, and you’ve applied for work everyday. But things eventually worked out for me! Stay strong out there.

It would be scary be an older parent with young children and losing your job. Age discrimination is very real.

So true, Theresa. I've literally heard young hiring managers (colleagues at my old firm) make comments as they viewed applications about how this or that person is probably old. Now I do have to say that I've noticed the older employees at my firm (who are not in senior executive positions) are quite a bit slower and have a much more negative attitude than the rest. Out of about 25 colleagues, we have 6 who are over age 50, and all 6 are the weakest of the group. So there may be some rhyme to the reason. At what point do you say the firm and its shareholders must come before keeping people on just to ensure they get a paycheck each week?
@@lvega5606 - Far from being sympathetic, your response seems to vindicate age discrimination as a legitimate assessment of worker value - a view that is more than a little insulting, actually, to older workers (and also illegal in the USA - so you'd better tell the youngster-hiring managers to keep their ageism to themselves or they might be staring at the cross hairs of a law suit some time soon.) I don't know how old you are or what you have done or do for a living, but people in their 50's are hardly old and washed-up and very often are at the height of their skills and powers. [ In the U.S., most politicians are over 50; the president is usually over 50; all the members of the Supreme Court are over 50! ] Your personal experience suggests only that the older workers in this environment were subject to the underestimation of their younger co-workers - who were apparently the majority, which might have accounted for the older workers' "negative" attitudes. There's nothing quite as demoralizing as a little whipper-snapper new to a profession thinking they know better than someone who has been doing the job for 25 years. We often confuse youth with competency - a grave mistake. The idea that this subset of workers are the "weakest" is someone's perception, likely a biased one. So your suggestion is that for the good of corporations' bottom lines people over 50 ought to be let go and certainly never hired? How are more unemployed older people - who are too young by at least a decade to retire in most circumstances - better for the larger society? Really, I hope you've reconsidered this careless remark since you made it. And, I also hope you are never on the far side of 50 with a lot more to offer, but discounted as weak and a drain on your company's profit margin. Nothing like walking in the shoes of your own biases to see their foolishness.

Yeah, the UK system can be so unhelpful when it comes to housing! Plenty get great help, but plenty don't either! Families should get priority surely.
It doesn't necessarily take you losing a job to land up in these peoples situation, I was working and suffered a stroke at 49yrs which has left me disabled and forever on benefits, my world came crashing down overnight and being a single parent and left to struggle on a much smaller amount of money was very stressful, you just never know what's around the next corner, losing your income can happen to anyone anytime.
Sue F my mom had a accident that left here with brain damage, I understand what you mean with live can change any second. My dad still works and me and my brother take care of my mom after school and we help to pay bills

E E My stroke left me disabled I have to use a walking stick from weakness and numbness down my left side, I also suffer from long and short term memory loss, I have difficulty using my left hand as I have fine motor skill issues, recently I've been having seizures so I didn't lose my job as such I resigned.

For one thing, kids need to know little as possible about these things, they are children. Not all can be kept from them, but she knows too much. She should lay awake at night worrying?
@@burly636 you cant hide it anyway. Kids are very underestimated. They know it. Its better to explain than pretending everything is ok, as a parent you are a role model after all. And lying and pretending wouldnt make you a better one.
@@burly636 Kids pick up on things if you tell them or not they aren't as stupid as you think they are at least they grow and appreciate what they have in life and they aren't greedy they know how tough it is living on benefits.
@@burly636 , I agree with you! Though I think parents should be transparent about their struggles with their children but not to that extent. Children should be allowed to be children and know /understand the minimum as possible. No child should hear their parent on the phone with a bill collector or talking about certain things. Let them play and when they lay their head down at night they sleep instead of worrying. When I was a child money was never spoken about in front of my brother or I. My parent's wanted us to sleep, focus on school, sport's and to never bring up their finances. We worked at an early age and contributed to buying our school supplies, clothing and so forth. To this day my parent's would still never discuss their financial situation with us. Some children know more than they should as seen here.
One thing I absolutely respect about these parents is they don't hide their finances, disappointment, and hard work from their children. They are rooting for their parents and have their backs. Bless their hearts 💕💞♥
Children need to be taught about finances and how to handle money. I don't necessarily believe that dragging the children through the entire emotional roller coaster of what job loss means, is healthy for them. Those little girls were terrified at times - first, that their father would go to jail for taking part in the sit-in at the bankrupt work place; and again when they saw their father falling apart as time went on - he turned from a loving, hugging Dad to a screaming shrew with them; and the one girl at the end sitting on her bed talking about how good it was he had a job now because a job is good for more than money, it's good for self-esteem too. As if she has the slightest clue what self-esteem is. Kids don't need to get down and scrape rock bottom; they should know what is happening because Dad is suddenly at home all the time, and they need to know that finances have changed so they won't necessarily be able to do all the things they used to do - but they don't need to see Dad cry, or overhear conversations between Mom and Dad at a time when they're both losing their optimism and starting to talk about "what if.......". Don't shut the kids into a closet and never tell them what's happening, but DO know how much is enough for a child.

Losing a job is scary..hard..stressful and disappointing. Praying for everyone to make it through this hardship. Life is just hard.
I'm an American. Married and raised 3 children. Tough times came. Jobs came and went. If my husband wasn't working I certainly was. I worked many a menial job. He was a skilled laborer. Welder. When work was there it was plentiful. Feast or famine. But we survived. Now divorced. Happy. Free. Living on disability and food stamps. Doing the best I can. All by myself. My children have gone their own way. Husband remarried raising granddaughter. But I'm still here. Thriving and surviving. I will never give up. Even in a pandemic and death of roommate. I've sold all I can. And rented the spare room. She can't pay right now but she does all the cleaning. I can live with that. At least I'm not alone. That's good as i am I'll. All will work out.

Damn, I've been without a job as a single guy and it feels awful. I can't imagine what it's like to be in that situation AND having children and a partner that depend on you.
It's sad really depression is learking in me......
I can imagine and chose between marriage and a family vs. getting a law degree and paying for it. I got the law degree and I'm debt-free, and family-free too! 😁
Don’t complain so much in front of the children. Making them worried wouldn’t help.

I find that it helps to develope a child as he/she are growing up to go through ALL sorts of emotions.It will make them a lot stronger, as adults, than others that are wrapped in cotton wool all their lives.

Honesty
Some of the people posting comments on this program are unbelievable. Everything is a competition: "I've been poorer than they are." "I work harder than they do." "I'm prettier and younger- looking than the English!" "America is a worse country than the UK."
I don't know why anyone would watch a film on this particular subject with no empathy and so much judgement. All I can say is - "there but for the grace of God go you or I...." Let's hope you night-crawlers don't encounter misfortune in your lives. Then you get to hear all the judgmental jerks telling you what to do, how easy it is, and what you did wrong.
Exactly. The problem is that when your company goes under and you are in your 50s, you need to financially consider retirement because that's pretty much your only option. I'm from the US and my father in law was faced with that choice. No one wanted to hire him because he came from a time where an associates degree was worth something and when you're in your 50s, people think you aren't going to stick around. So, they don't hire you. A lot of young people around my age think that people can actually just get another job at the drop of a hat.
Thank you. I was doing exactly that in my head and it is so ridiculous to put our situations against others, our stuggles against others because they are still really hard to go thru no matter what end you may be at so thank you for writing this comment.
I’m sorry but these people are just moaning so much and seem entitled. These are the same people who will laugh at families from third world countries but if they were put in those situations for a day they would probably do what they’re good at, slitting their wrists or drugs. Smh.
@@kinglissa2953 Of course they're entitled. They helped create the system and its expectations. Hardship is relative. I see people from "3rd world countries" living in the U.S., complaining despite having assistance and more "stuff" than many Americans grew up with, believe it or not.. They developed expectations. It's relative.

The 2nd older couple: I would sell that house and furniture and get a 1-bedroom or studio and save all my money.
Dont wait 1-2 years later to do all the same. It gets more difficult as you get older.
Above all, don't be embarssed to tell everyone you are looking for work. You never know who can be able to help you.

This breaks my heart. Genuine people wanting to work but they not even able to get any benefits while they are looking for a job, while there are so many families with 10+ children claiming benefits and have zero intention to ever work because 'it's not worth it'. boils my blood

This really hit home for me. Being made redundant at the age of 49 after 15 years and that was five years ago. Haven't had a decent job since. I'm so glad Andy found something and Gary's little girl is just adorable. What a wise little lady.

Just came by this Video. One; Ageism is very Real. I have a Master's degree in HR. Am 48 years old; Survived the Recession, then Covid hit last 2years. To Survive; I became a grocery Delivery driver. Went from making $240K to $24K per year to $1500 per week delivering groceries to $50p-700 per week working 7-days a Week. Point? Hang in there and Take Any jobs to survive! In America; 332 million people; 2Million are Homeless and another 2-million working and sleeping out of their Cars! Stay strong; don't give Up!
i made a job for myself in ecommerce, have you thought about ecommerce or affiliate marketing, or looked into passive income? The local economy doesn't affect my income. its not for everyone but i love being my own boss. Good luck

I was made redundant in my 20s and that was heartbreaking, but oh my God, imagine being in your 40s and 50s with 20+ years paid into the pension and being told that you'll get nothing. 😞
@Joseph It means that you lose your job because your company is going out of business or just doesn't have the money to keep you anymore. 🙁

It means your job is not needed anymore. I looked up his former company and it was bought by another in 2009 when the video was filmed. That explains why he was made redundant.

Im 25 lost my job divorced and lost my house and everything been working since i was 16 at the same factory
Wow, poor andy, his wife was living in her own world. What bad timing for starting your own business, then complaining he hadn't been very supportive.
The kids in these unemployment docs hurt my heart. As a product of a home where I had to listen to complaints from adults about money problems, I know the end result can be becoming an adult with a dysfunctional attitude towards finances. Obviously kids can't always be shielded from all the realities of money problems, but I think a parents job is to keep things as normal as possible and not constantly expose them to their worries about bills.
Exactly. I was made redundant about 5 years ago, and it was almost 6 months before my girls heard 2 words about how we couldn't afford stuff. Even then it was a case of them just having to make do a few weeks longer with clothes or shoes than might otherwise have been the case, tho holidays and frivolous stuff just quietly went away with no discussion to mark their disappearance... they rarely even noticed.

I think it depends on how it's handled. My mam did work, for a while it was zero hours contract but thankfully was able to pick up some work even if it was part time, my father went to extreme lengths to avoid paying the child allowance he owed so often nothing from him. Finances were tight at times and my mam was open about it but also open about ways in which she saved money, areas she made cuts so we had money for other things, etc. It taught me a lot and made me a lot more aware of money and at a point when I was struggling to get by as an adult I knew how to handle it.
Um 😐 not exactly sometimes it will be good for children to learn about expenses and how much parents earn

@@MKiurinuRigold One thing is to learn about expenses and another is hearing your parents constantly talking about not having a job a no money, is to much for a kid, because kids worry every time they hear the parents stressed about not having a job.
I don't live in the UK, but our household has been going through this as well. Last time my husband lost his job it took us a year and a bit before he found something. It frustrates me that these huge companies like Ford have the audacity to let go of people after years and years of service and leave them with no severance package. Just out on the street with you.
Maybe your husband should try and be more useful and get some skills behind him.

The first Dad is trying but is clearly depressed. I mean he worked 20+ years for the same company... and then just got tossed away. He started to cry as he was reading his fair well letter to his company. I understand the wife being upset but... she was sort of too harsh on him at times. My husband and I are currently going through this however I'm 30 he's 31 and we have no children. It's not a fun feeling of feeling like the future looks bleak. My advice to anyone struggling do not give up.

are disproportionately underemployed... employers want younger expendable employees and cheaper labor.. erosion of the standard of living is ↗1000%
It's considerably tough for younger applicants to land jobs that are decently payed, as we lack experience, 30-50 is the ideal age demography.

It is a double edged sword. A lot of boomers should be retired opening up job opportunities for the millennials and sooners.
It makes me sad that children understand what's happening in society and are prepared to give their savings to help out the family 🥺
In frustration my mother dumped the family bills on me I was 10 or 12, I woke to screaming.
The littel girl Leah, she's such a wonderful kid. "We've got friends to play with, we got friends who live on our street who go to our school. And I've got my room and all my books and stuff like that to read so we don't really mind." What an inspirational and understanding child. Most kids these days would be complaining about phones or tablets or whatever else and this little girl is content with her books and friends. Honestly reminds me of my childhood.
Most kids are like this....people are so weird about kids in these documentaries and think they are extraordinary angels. This is just how kids are. They are good-natured and generous.
@@vanderbam2741: Agreed, while kids do like to fit in and have nice stuff, they're also pretty understanding (and don't want their parents to suffer in order to get things they want), at least for the most part. Especially if you're open with them, they usually are understanding!
I was stunned by how perceptive and articulate little Leah was.
I felt sorry for hannah’s dad crying when he was reading that letter. Heartbreaking this whole documentary was heartbreaking
I was made redundant after 15 years in a company. I started temping right away, finding myself doing jobs I never would have dreamed I would be doing, but I never thought any of them were ‘below’ me, I was just grateful to have a job at that stage. Spent 9 months temping doing a variety of things, increasing my skill base along the way. I was applying for jobs I was more suited for the whole time and finally landed my favourite job so far, better pay as well. So if you work hard, accept anything and don’t be too big for your boots, things work out.

I was made redundant and couldn't find work in the UK I ended up looking for work abroad and after a year of unemployment I got a 1 year contract in the states. That was 18 years ago and I am still on a 1 year contract. I have saved enough to buy a business in the UK and I am thinking of returning home to employ myself.

I agree. I left a job in a redundancy scheme which I regretted quickly afterwards thinking of relocating for family reasons. However I was lucky to get a temp job two weeks later which I’m making the most of. I agree that attitude is everything in these situations you can’t afford to be too idealistic if you want to move forwards.
I’ve been watching poverty documentaries all day. I’m absolutely heartbroken at the severity of it!! I really had no idea how utterly desperate millions are in our own country!! I’m going to start doing more. Please ppl keep at least donating food and what you can afford. I know some of these docs are a few years old but we are still in major crisis 🙏🏼🙏🏼💔💔
these poverty documentaries make me thankful for what I have and inspire me to continue to work harder than most.
I have lived in poverty how about being evicted and having to go to shelters if they will take you or begging people you know for a place to stay for the night I have been there and if it wasn't for the help of my family member and love I would still be on the streets people need to count their blessings and NO job is beneath you when you have children to feed

Having gone thru this twice myself I have to say that being over 50 it is nearly impossible to find a job. Had one more person told me I was overqualified for their position I might have socked em in the head. So, for those who say just take any old job, you can't get them, they won't even consider you. I feel sorry for those people with children. Learning that you're disposable and nothing is to be counted on at that young age is sad.
All the families on here seemed really determined to get back into work and you've got to respect them for that, losing a job and your home can happen to anyone at any time so you should never look down on other people cause that could be you

I am 52 , never had job security, worked all my life , still am , I own no house no pension total squat, i patiently wait end of days now.
Its not like I sat down on it, i tried but dependents and care cost so much i have to live month to month.

People need to stop judging these people for what they appear to be and realize the point of this is to document the EMOTIONAL burden and constant worry they are facing and realize the grass is not greener on the other side.
I can’t stop judging people who sit at home and do nothing but cry to the cameras when my mom clawed her way out of the same situation by cleaning houses when she was told there was no work.
I don't think they should be discussing job hunting in front of the children, it's putting way too much pressure on them. Why is she at the husband all the time? Why doesn't she get off her behind and look herself?! Not an easy woman to live with I'd imagine. He seems lovely.
laughingallthetime50 Like I've told my sister, don't talk finances around your children. They are more aware of noticing these problems with money going on than you might think. They have enough to worry about. Hopefully your financial difficulties will pass, but the kids will be nervous about it happening in the future .
@@yourfuneraldirector6432 I agree...even around adult children, parents should not talk about their finances. When I am around my parents, my dad tells all their business, reads their bills aloud as he opens the mail, etc. I have stayed with them as an adult jobless a few times, and it's hard looking for a job, and hearing all that stuff with your parents.
Introduce your children to Dave Ramsey. Best that you could do to help your own .
@Spooky Moo I was in a conversation about this with my sister only a week ago. I believe all children should be taught by their parents or as a school subject in secondary school like how to get a mortgage and finance and basic life lessons. We have none of that. I basically had to learn as I went along like everyone one else but found it hard even with a steady job, sorting out bills etc.

My heart goes out to them. There are going to be a lot more ‘middle class’ families in this situation soon.

Having a resouceful partner (in this case wife) helps a lot when you are unemployed. I loved the voice of the lady who has started the "occasions" group of singers. What a splendid idea and what beautiful voices. I hope they have had a lot of demand and success since this video was made. Good luck to her and her friends
Some people (not you) have bagged her on here, and said that she is silly, should give up her "dream" and "get a real job"..
Well, she is starting her own business. It is a business where there isn't a lot of people are doing, meaning that she is cornering the market, and might get a lot of gigs, and thus, a lot of money.
Also, she is helping other people who are unemployed, by giving them jobs (like the people who formed her choir).
This breaks my heart, I moved to the uk because of the crisis in Spain and I feel thankful because I had everything I needed. Uk gave me job, hope and love. I miss all my colleagues :( Love you guys, wherever you are :( Best time of my life.
Has anybody followed up on these people to see how they're doing? Seems to be just as bad there as it is here in the colonies.

Came to the UK with 400 euros in my pocket. I had to move around were jobs were... common sense right? I worked, studied...did the best I could to be a good citizen and have a reasonable life. Always "ran" away from "bad crews". Today I have a lovely family and I have my own place. A lucky person.
You're not alone. I'm very thankful to have my job, even though as an essential worker.
This isn't a "poverty " documentary. I don't think the 1st couple know the meaning of poverty.
They are, after 3 months of unemployment, now eating into their SAVINGS......

Yes, the first couple have no idea what real poverty is. And they seemed to want to bend the rules to make two separate claims instead of a joint claim. If a couple in my area did that they would be called benefit cheats. It's strange how one's socio-economic status affects the way actions are viewed. Look through the fog everyone. Crying like he has lost a family member. I think maybe he needs to get a grasp on who he is rather than what he is.
I agree, this family has no clue. He seems mentally unstable. They both need to accept their new station in life, accept any job and not worry what others will think of them
That family will suffer the most in the end. They don't seem to be capable of understanding they can't do as they please anymore.

What a heart-wrenching story. I have been without pay for three months due to broken leg and struggling to keep my house so I sympathize. This little girl is so precious though. She is very wise and sees everything.
I've been unemployed for 8 months mainly because of problems with my mental health. I spend a few hours a day applying for jobs but nobody seems to want to "take a chance" on somebody with my history. I feel so ashamed that I'm not working so barely leave my house during the day, which makes my mental health even worse. It's just a vicious cycle

I barely have hours at work so I considered myself unemployed as well. During those days that I’m not scheduled for work, it’s difficult for me to come outside my house so I know what you mean. Do you have a yard in your house? Maybe you can go to your yard in the morning and do some exercises. I’ve been doing that which helps relieve my anxiety a bit. It would be more helpful if I can walk my neighborhood but I really can’t.
I was so desperate after being laid off in 1995 at age 46 that I almost chose to fly to the Mariana Islands for a job offer there. I was actually going down to the street below me each night to hang out and bring gifts to the homeless since I was convinced that I would very soon be among them. Thank God within two days of me having to accept or decline the Mariana offer, an opportunity opened up that allowed me to stay in California. That was so close! My heart goes out to the many desperate working people suffering from our leaders' horrible decisions. I love the people - not our corrupt greedy leaders! and Not the corporations!
Honestly, if you work for a computer company and can't write out your own CV, something is wrong.
I think its because Andy and Jackie first got into the workforce in a time when companies didn't really worry about taking CV's. So they're aren't familiar with doing them because they're from a time when cv's werent common. These days everytime you ask about work people look at you and say (sometimes coldly) 'Just drop your resume and we'll see what happens'.
I did think this odd? Cvs have been around for years and years you wouldnt need to spend £500 for someone with his intellect it frustrated me watching that as i felt he was being ripped off
Its probably his confidence in writing one when he hasn't written one ever/in a long time. Also don't forget the resources available wouldn't be as abundant when this was filmed. And CV templates for executive roles can be hard to write

Parents, you will rue the day you have shared these adult things with children. These children have been forced on to the roller coaster with you. Let children be children- keep them happy, let them play. Keep worries away from them. Share adult things- fears and realities like unemployment and financial worries- with other adults, but not with children. The kids will feel depression and anxiety like you do- do NOT do this to the little ones.
Completely agree! I would never discuss adult matters like this in front of my children! They have enough to worry about in this world, they don’t need our issues ontop of them! These kids in this documentary should have no idea what’s going on :(

So very true. My parents shielded me from this..but as a child of the 80s I saw friends houses being repossessed.
As a child it seemed like they had done something very wrong and the parents were bad people.
It scarred me a lot and I've become a workaholic. Never travelled and was far too scared to ever have kids.

Although this is an old documentary it's very relevant to the current situation in the UK with covid and my heart goes out to all of the people who are faced with unemployment and money troubles and who are raising kids.please if you're in a position to help a family in need then do what you can for them because at times like this we all need to stick together and remember these words.... kindness doesn't cost a penny but it makes you a richer person.❤️😉👍

I once found myself out of work aged 62, scary, thought this is the scrap heap, I got work though and retired aged 66.
I have to wait another 7 years until 67 before I claim pension credit.
I’m 60 and struggling to find a job , I’ve been in technical sales for years and pretty switched on with any thing mechanical, but no one wants to employ me , I’m at the end of my tether and don’t know what to do , I have let my family down ,

how much could he put on a cv if he worked the same job for 20 years. he could google how to write up a cv, or the job center should show people how to. if he pays the person 500 to do his cv, he still has to provide all the information to them, so in a way all they would be doing is typing it up for him and padding his info a little.

Maybe you have a point of comparison....maybe this country?........if that is correct ....then I suggest you hop over to an underdeveloped country and live there .......in exactly the same way as the indigenous people........then you would know what poverty is.

The point here is these good families are perceiving loss.....going without ......high stress levels .......and yes suffering .......and if they consider themselves "poor ".......then they should at least allowed that feeling ......even though their poverty is "western".
Make allowances for a persons psychological perception of a situation.......and it would allow you to be more kind.....and less judgmental.
But unemployment can lead to poverty.

The Jackie and Andy situation was literally my parents for about a year back in the early 2000's. They were that generation that stayed with companies and didn't really keep a CV up to date. Luckily my Mum got a teaching job so only my Dad was out of work, and he went to a ton of interviews as (funny enough) a computer salesman. If I translate that situation to myself now, I've moved companies about 4 times in the past 10 years and get a substantial bump in pay each time. Companies don't care about your loyalty, they will get rid of you if the balance sheet tells them to. Always keep mobile, keep marketing yourself even when you're happy in your job, and be ready to jump ship at any moment. And yes I'm in the UK not the US where they have even less job stability!
I work in recruitment and I have seen many people like this who have spiraled into depression. Just because they are not poverty and cleaning toilets doesn’t make them less off than others. It’s not easy to work hard for 20 plus years and suddenly have your world taken away. People need to understand this. It’s easy to say I’d do anything fast food whatever, but unless you experience just this. You will never understand it. There pensions they worked hard for gone. Unable to obtain benefits. Poverty is not just homeless,single mums and people on benefits. These people can face more hardship than most. Outdated qualifications, age, are barriers. People need to stop the judging
Couldn't agree more with you. The company I work for just put off a group of people some of them had been with us for 30 odd years.
I know what they are going through. I've been there. I lost my job after 16 years of making good money. I lost all self esteem and felt worthless. Luckily I had some savings and then I got sick. I was able to get social security disability. Then my husband hurt his back but was able to get disability too.
The 'i'm leaving' letter to clients colleagues is emotional but sadly not worth your emotions. Others really don't care for more than 20 seconds. Just reality. Focus on the future not the past.
Harsh but true. However being in sales he felt it was a guesture that he thought would earn him some goodwill and maybe help him poach them later on.
If he had been dealing with those people for some years then he would have built up a good rapport with them and I think it was a good gesture to let them know he wouldn't see them again, and thanking them for all they had done. It's simply good manners after all. I hope he did find a good job eventually, he was a good man, with a lovely family.

People go through a lot worse to earn and provide for themselves and their family, and they don't make some of the assumptions or complaints that women from the first family did. Everyone has to work / find work and it's not easy. It's not being judgemental at all it's called living in the real world, were privileges don't exist for everyone.

The more you have the more you can lose. Be humble. Work to live don’t live to work. Doesn’t matter how much you earn as long as you have a roof over your head and good to eat that’s all that matters. You can’t take anything with you when you die.

My heart went out to those people- I have been there- the rejection, no call backs, feeling so bad about yourself- like worthless, thank God i have a full time job with benefits now, and I am grateful, but I also remind my self about those tough times- I did all kinds of work- temping, assembly line- I have college degree, but it was still hard to find a job, because the job market changes daily- the experience you had 5-10 yrs ago is not enough now- the degree you had 10 yrs ago, is not enough now- I had to move to another state just to find a job- it's tough- when you are employed, you never really think about it, until you are the one looking for work- if you have a family to support, or a single person with a child or children,- the bills still come, you still have to live somewhere, you still have to eat, have somewhere to wash yourself, look presentable, get from place to place to even look for work- that never changes- the bus costs money, cabs cost money, gas costs money- if the place you are looking for work is far- without transportation how are you going to get there?- I will never take having a job for granted again, I will never look down on those who are unemployed again
I am reading some of the comments- the people who had good jobs, and lost them, and now are feeling pinched- that is poverty to them- not to you, but to them- if you were them, you would call it poverty too- don't hate on these people, because they had a comfortable life- is it their fault that they had it like that, and now they don't?- yes, people have to consider taking a lesser job, or 2 jobs, but it is hard- to go to college work hard all those years, build a good life, and then be told you have to take less pay, or a lower position in order to work- do you understand it is about people's self worth and dignity?- I get it, do what you have to do(legally) in order to put food on the table, but why are people bitter at other people's success?- you are not going to ever go farther than you are with that attitude- don't call yourself a caring person, and then don't have any compassion on people, when they fall on hard times, whoever they are- we want people to have compassion on us- let's do the same- ok?

After all the payments, there's hardly money left for food, clothes, animals etc. Inside the beautifull homes with animals is poverty, even it looks from the outside otherwise... don't judge so quickly.
It’s easier to go from nothing to nothing than something to nothing. Without people in that income class whose going to buy the stuff that employs service workers? If you on benefits long term those service jobs about all that’s out there to move you up. It’s not right or fair but it is reality.

I've just happen to see this documentary. I found it absolutely interesting and I felt for these people.
Being unemployed with young children is a real tragedy.
And I also feel that those children sometimes speak as adults, because of the situation their parents are going through.
I was happy to learn that at the end they all found some jobs.

The children on this programme were absolutely beautiful and so supportive particularly Rhea she was so well adjusted. - I fell in love with her a pure delight. It was very sad to see people who have never experienced the dole come to terms with what unemployment means. I am glad they all found work. It seems life is very bleak at times.

My gosh what an amazing couple they are. The husband, wife and kids seem so genuine and very well educated. They work great together and respect each other. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as pure as them.
