Best design EVER! One wire connection and fully contained. There is a company that makes them for all V8's using the GM basic guts with custom bodies to fit the particular application. High performance electronics and high output coils.

My 1974 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was built in August of 1974 and, being late in the production year, was one of the earliest cars equipped with HEI. I put ~300,000 miles before I had a failure; the control module had gone bad. The replacement was defective; it failed after a couple of weeks. The second replacement was likewise defective. I looked at the manufacture lot numbers of both defective parts; they were the same. I then went in search of another replacement. The first three parts stores had the part with the same lot number. The fourth store had a different lot number. I bought that one and ~200,000 miles later, it's still working fine.
The only other issue I've had has been with the vacuum advance failing every few years but that's to be expected.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's true, dealing with replacement modules can sometimes feel like a gamble. I replaced mine a few years back, and thankfully it's been holding up well.
Appreciate you taking the time to comment!

I had an issue when I converted my 240z HEI, there were no running problems just my tach would not pair up, ended up converting to a later 28zx system and all was well.

    If you want better control...
Pull the four pin ignition module and replace it with a seven or eight pin.

It actually is a speed sensor specifically for the ECU, not for any gauges, I linked a short in the video and here's the link: ua-cam.com/users/shortsDHhXhb2yzP0
This picture is from the official shop manual.
The tachometer terminal is the one closer to the engine on the distributor cap, when installed. It is usually written on top of the cap.
My issue was the water temp. sensor. It was dead, and so the ECU interpreted the data as a warm engine, injected less fuel and therefor I had always had a rough engine start when it was cold. I switched the sensor and it works fine ever since :)
      Hope that helps!

The one shown on my rebuilt engine has the part no.: SKP SKDIGM29R. A model found on, for example, the 1979 BUICK ELECTRA 5.7L 350cid V8.

I really don't know why I pronounced it the way I did, I actually know how it is spelled correctly - H.E.I😅 Sometimes when I'm engrossed in a project, my focus shifts from details like pronunciation to the bigger picture. Thank you for your understanding and for sticking with me despite the slip-up. Your support means a lot! 😊

WTF is a hey distributor. This is a H.E.I. distributor. It's pronounced H E I. Say the letter H, then the letter E, then the letter I. H.E.I. is not a word it's an acronym. I'll forgive you pronouncing the letter H in any of the many weird ways Europeans do.

Back in the 1970s, I sent a UCLA sweatshirt to my (now) late uncle who lived in Munich. A few years later I went to visit him and he asked me, "Was bedeutet _ucla_ " (what does _ucla_ mean). I had to explain that UCLA wasn't a weird word but an acronym. @@thataustriancarguy
