    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at:

Take care and love to you all.

Growing up, I never knew or met any deaf people. Till 5 or so years ago we got deaf neighbors a few doors down. I helped them with a car issue once and we got to know each other since. In a short time I picked up a little sign from them. One day I was in a store and a person waved me down in an aisle and tried to ask me a question. I noticed his hearing aid and began to use what little sign I knew, then realized I knew more than I thought. He wanted my opinion on choosing a color of spray paint for his son's bike. I was able to understand and help him out and it was a good feeling. Since then I have been using these videos to learn even more. Thank you for the work and the time it takes to make these videos.

Bill! I just want to say THANK YOU. Your lessons have been a tremendous help. I have had a boost in confidence in my signing and I understand you so well. I also have had practice with actual members of the deaf community. They were so patient and helpful too!
Yesterday I had a consultation with a deaf lady and was able to sign back and forth to help her get products she needed. Secondly, there's a lady who works at the grocery store I go to who is deaf. Every time I go to the store and check out, I go to her lane. We are both happy to see each other and communicate. Because of you, I am able to make more connections with people. Thank you Bill.

I just want to thank you, Dr. Bill! Our beach neighbor was having trouble putting up his tent, so we helped him out. Realized he was deaf, and I couldn't communicate with him at all. So I started watching your videos. A couple weeks later, we saw him again , and I could actually have a basic conversation with him (not "deaf guy", found out his name is Zachary, who moved to here from Maryland to go to school for film production!) It was a struggle...lots of "spell please"...ok, "spell slow", but I'm so glad I found your YT channel! You made it possible for me to make a new friend.

It’s been almost 3 years since I’ve taken a full year of an ASL class. I was really bummed that I couldn’t end up taking more at the time. I still remember a handful of what I learned and am now wanting to continue to learn the language. I found a perfect level to continue from! ASL is such a beautiful and fun language. I hope to become fluent one day! Thank you Dr. Bill!!

Growing up I was rejected by deaf people when I was at a young age and when I was in HS i got a few deaf friends before they went to college and I was by myself during HS. But I got through it by pushing myself through the barriers that I had during my young ages. When we moved to Gibsonia i had no deaf friends around where I live so ive been going to group Tuesday and Thursday and I'm very comfortable at stellar.

Spent the last 15 week doing Lessons 1-15. Thank you for putting this up on UA-cam. I bought the LifePrint CD with these lessons on it (the big one), but it sure is handy to have these on UA-cam so I can practice on the go. My current laptop has no CD drive, so I had to hook up an external drive to use the DVD--now that these are on UA-cam, I don't have to worry about it. And I'm glad I supported you anyway, Bill, by buying the DVD! :)

Hi Mr. Bill Vicars...My name is Rissa. I watch your videos all the time. I am a full time ASL student in Dayton, Ohio and I was talking to a Deaf Sub we had the other day his name was Scott and I was asking him if he had seen any of your videos. I told him your hearing status and the region SAC Why? because he was telling us a little of his history and he said he was an old classmate of yours in the past. I will try to re-comment with his last name a different time but his name is Scott and he is a hard of hearing teacher of ASL at Sinclair Comm College in Dayton, Ohio. I just want to say thanks to you for all your videos they really help me with studying at home. and your signs are the best in relation to what I learn at home. I hope you keep up your work and Thank You so much. I can't believe how small the world is I have been spreading the word about your videos and how much of a reinforcement they are to the ITP and ASL programs. They would be great for hearing parents of new born Deaf children as well. I have recommended your videos to 3 hearing adults in relation to children in their life that are Deaf. I really hope parents of hearing children will access the native Deaf language for their children's sake.

What about "first" grade? Would you use the "wrist twist" version? And would you do that for other grades as well?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому

While you may see some variety throughout the Deaf Community on the ordinal counting of the grades (first, second, third...) -- in general I recommend the "twist" version of "1st" for the concept of "1st grade" as well as most of the other grades.
      For example: "Fourth grade"
      See: ua-cam.com/video/dGwB8P_XtOE/v-deo.html
I recommend that "twist" version of the ordinal numbers up through 9th grade. Beyond that point I do the cardinal number followed by a fingerspelled "TH."

51:37 At this point you signed midnight so my question would be how would you sign it in military time (midnight being 00:00 and noon being 1200 and four being 1600) is there a way or would it just be the civilian time?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +1

Military time is not a common enough topic for it to have a widely followed rule but as the father of a son currently serving in the army my wife (who is also Deaf) would just sign "16" HUNDRED HOUR if I needed to specify the corresponding military time.
However, we are discussing three different languages here (functionally). Or two languages (English and ASL) and a dialect (or lingo).
      English
      Military
      ASL
The question here is really, "How can we use ASL to directly map to military lingo in regard to clock time?"
At that point we are no longer interpreting but rather we are translating and will sign 16 HUNDRED HOUR in context. The context is important. Otherwise we need to specify we are discussing military time.

I think that is a great question!
      The short answer is: No.
The medium answer is: Well, gee, you can sign anything you want, wave your hands in the air wildly, and run around like a lunatic - but if you want to have successful conversations in the Deaf Community it is best to sign in ways that are similar to the signing being done by socially active adult Deaf native signers.
The longer answer involves a couple of big (but fun) words:
      1. disambiguation
      2. differentiation
If a situation is ambiguous it means that it is unclear, inexact, and open to interpretation.
Disambiguation is a fancy way of saying to make something more clear so there is no confusion about it. After a thing or situation has been disambiguated it is then unambiguous or easy to interpret.
Differentiation is just a fancy way of saying to make something different.
We can use differentiation to help accomplish disambiguation.
In other words we can make things obviously different in order to avoid errors in interpretation and reduce misunderstanding.
      For example:
A person can differentiate the sign COLD by adding “W” handshapes to specify the concept of “winter.”
      COLD + “W”-handshape = WINTER (unambiguous)
COLD + “S” handshapes = “cold” or “winter” [but defaults to “cold”]
An alternate way of differentiating “winter from cold” (other than adding a “W” handshape) is to rely on context.
COLD (signed with “S” handshapes) + “context” = WINTER
A third way of differentiating “winter from cold” is to use a mouth movement that looks as if you are pronouncing the word “winter.”
So, you need either a difference in handshape, a mouth movement, and/or context to differentiate WINTER from COLD.
You may be asking yourself: Why in the world would someone choose to sign COLD without “W” handshapes with the intent of creating the meaning of “winter?” Why would someone deliberately (on purpose) choose to sign in a more ambiguous (less clear) way?
      A few reasons:
      1. Globality: Your signing of WINTER would be more global in nature if you do it with “S” hands. Greater numbers of signers of languages other than ASL would recognize your sign more readily because a significant number of signed languages use a shaking of fists sign to mean “winter.”
      (See www.lexico.com/en/definition/globality)
(See “spreadthesign(dot)com” and look up WINTER)
      2. Simplicity: The “W” handshape is slightly more complex and requires a micro (extremely small) bit more effort to do that an “S” handshape.
      3. Conventionality: “(of a person) concerned with what is generally held to be acceptable at the expense of individuality and sincerity.” (Source: Lexico)
      4. Cachet: “The state of being respected or admired; prestige.” (Source: Lexico)
Think of conventionality as being “herd mentality” or going along with the herd. Many others are doing it this way so I’d better do it this way even though it seems stupid to me and is less clear.
Cachet is (arguably) the real reason (in this situation) for choosing ambiguity over clarity. Whether they admit it or not, most people crave respect and admiration. We want to be part of the “in” crowd. We want to be one of the “cool kids” and if we can’t be then at least we want to be quirky enough to be admired for being avant-garde.
(Avant-garde means “Favoring or introducing experimental or unusual ideas.” Source: Lexico).
In other words what we give up in clarity of our signing we get back in cachet.
Our formula or recipe thus becomes:
COLD (signed with “S” hands) + “context” = “winter” + a smidgen of ambiguity + cachet
(If you don’t know what the word smidgen means - look it up.)
Getting back to the question of “Can we sign SUMMER by doing the HOT sign with an ‘S’ handshape?”
I told you this was the long answer but the answer is still “no.”
The reason though is because we don’t need to disambiguate the sign SUMMER from the sign HOT because the sign SUMMER is already differentiated by handshape, location, and movement.
In other words, if it isn’t broken - don’t fix it.
More specifically, let’s not change ASL just to satisfy the desire for convenience of Hearing English-as-a-first-language speakers who want to mentally link ASL to their native language for ease of learning and retention. Instead we can form more organic or natural memory aids such as associating the sign SUMMER with wiping sweat from one’s brow during the hot days of summer.
I get it. It’s natural for second language learners to want to link to their first language. The human brain seeks to make sense of things. Our brains form links and organize data into patterns to make it easier to remember things.
To be clear, (or to disambiguate, heh) I actually applaud (or rather - wave my hands in the air like a lunatic) the fact that you are thinking about and seeking ways to learn, remember, and use ASL. Keep it up!

could you also make a playlist (or videos) on how to sign and look like a native instead of a student? it sometimes gets confusing watching these when you sign like you normally would for say student where you would sign the book going up to the head then make the person and watching the student do the full sign. I feel it would both be beneficial and make signing more efficient. (tell me if this explanation doesn't make sense and ill try to add more context to it.)

      Casey,
I agree totally. I like your idea. It would be good to have a set of videos specifically focusing on casual, clipped, or abbreviated versions of signs as are common in Deaf to Deaf signing.
If you haven't watched the "Assimilation" video yet you might want to check that out.
      ua-cam.com/video/BP8b9CH6gP0/v-deo.html
Again -- I think your idea has merit and might even make a nice "preface" to the main playlist. Not sure when I'll be able to get such a video or set of videos produced (due to my current project list being sort of long) but eventually I would love to have such a playlist.

      Time Concepts: Dealing with time:
In English a person might say, "I went to a movie last Saturday." Or, maybe "Last Saturday I went to a movie." Notice how the concept of "go" is expressed as "went?" This is called "conjugating" the verb to show tense. (Conjugate is just a big word that means "change" or "join.") Another word for conjugate is "inflect."
In ASL that sentence would be signed "PAST SATURDAY ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE." (The "PRO1" means a first person pronoun, which is done by simply pointing at yourself with an index finger.) We use the same form of the concept "GO" for both present and past tense sentences. That is the way it is with most ASL sentences. We establish the "tense" or time-frame of a sentence by using certain "time signs" like "past week," "next month," "now morning," or "next year," and then the rest of the sentence uses typical non-conjugated signs. This technique works for whole paragraphs and/or conversations. Tense only needs to be established once at the beginning of an ASL conversation. All of the remaining signs use the same form regardless whether you are talking about the past, present, or future. For example, in the sentence, "TOMORROW ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE" uses the same sign for "GO" as the sentence, "YESTERDAY ME GO MOVIE."
Now note, that the interpretation of "NOW AFTERNOON ME-(PRO1) GO MOVIE" depends on what time of day it is. If it is morning, then the sentence would be the equivalent of, "This afternoon I will go to a movie." If it is currently night time, the sentence would be interpreted as, "Today I went to a movie." The ASL signs are the same, but their meaning depends on what time of day the sentence is being signed.
[The above information is in lesson 06 at Lifeprint.com in the notes section.]

I wanted to have good relations with each individual employee, unlike our previous bosses. So I started with basic alphabet skills, your website, and the Marlee Signs app to reach out to them. We hired a translator once a week (and changed to once a month because we were getting along so well!) It was sometimes difficult because I use a lot of jokes, slang, and colloquialisms in my writing and speech. But overall it was very rewarding. Even when we were in disagreement or conflict, they were still helpful and patient with me. Two recently retired and the third will be soon! I am so proud of them and thankful for their support.
