Additional Notes:
This audio is not official and has nothing to do with the movie. I did not make the sound effects track of this video from scratch, but I did arrange over a dozen different stock clips found on either the internet, or from my personal hard drive.
The sounds during the first twenty seconds of the video are taken from the intro of Metallica's "One," layered over additional stock audio.
The majority of the zombie chorus is stock audio. The rest of the background moans are my friends and I howling into a microphone.
The explosions, as well as most of the people screaming towards the end, are stock audio. The faint helicopter whirling during the middle of the video and onward are heavily distorted recordings of a maraca I shook. The gunfire is a mixture of stock audio and bits of home recordings I made, including one instance where I banged on my friend's drum cymbal using a stapler of ridiculous proportions.
This 1 minute clip was better then the entire World War Z movie in name only.
What was terrifying was the book zombies were the slow shuffling walkers, not the Usain Bolt zombies, and even with air cover, artillery and a fortified position the military was still over whelmed and slaughtered. But great job with the sound effects!
Right. They were fighting the Zombies of New York, and they were by the MILLIONS. Slow walking undead...millions of them and the military was slaughtered by them at the Battle of Yonkers.
@@natiliee.s.5476 The one thing a modern abrams tank is useless against? A group of zombies.
@@Darksky1001able
From what I can remember from the book, it was what the tanks were firing that were utterly useless. There was one scene were a tank crushed a news reporter, a soldier, and the news van all at once. But I do understand that a tank can't just roll through Millions of bodies without any issues.
@@natiliee.s.5476 Basically they were issued mostly solid shot anti tank ammo, APFSDS (armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot). Hell, they weren't even issued a lot of High Explosive rounds. When instead they COULD'VE been issued a ton of flechette ammo, turning their massive 120mm guns into giant shotguns, firing thousands of lead darts towards the zombies.
@@natiliee.s.5476 Also brother let us not forget that ammo was a problem.
the screams... those screams... I'll never be able to forget, those screams...
"There were five of them - a man, a woman, three kids. The man was on his chest, the kids had him by the arms tryna bite through his suit... The woman tore his mask off; you could see the terror in his face! I'll never forget his shriek as she bit off his chin and lower lip..."
If they made a movie just from this one scene and followed it to the key, I would pay double to see it. I'll be so upset if Yonkers is left out.
Hey man i have some bad news
After reading this book, listening to the audiobook, watching saving private ryan, 300, dawn of the dead, and watching this pic in hi def gave me the chills trying to imagine the battle of yonkers. After listening to this clip.... I was so scared i had to watch sesame street =P
moctezuma112 You could only imagine the horrors if you to experience from first person in real life. The smell. The heat. The sounds of moans getting louder and gun shots less. People pushing past each other trying to get out of there, scaring you even more because you're expecting Gs to be grabbing at you at any moment.
+The Kehwanna Coast I have lived in the U.S for decade or so, and looking back at the grammatical errors in my last comment here make me cringe really badly lol I must have been tired when I wrote that. It was back in my college days after all.
+The Kehwanna Coast Ha I look back on my grammar aswell.
That MOAN! That would absolutely fuck me up. This may be an amatuer video but that piece of sound is one of the best things I've heard - that is EXACTLY the sort of overwhelming impact the movie needs to aim for at Yonkers. It should be all about the monstrous size of the almost impossibly large horde and the terror that would generate.
@CaporalMichelson
This is just from memory, but:
-The Army faced the bulk of the New York City infestation, which was a total number of zombies that numbered in the millions.
-The Army only faced the INITIAL hordes, probably numbering in the tens of thousands.
-Counting only the soldiers (not the ordinance teams or reporters), the Army must have been outnumbered by the INITIAL HORDES ALONE by, at the very-very-very least, 100-to-1.
-The mission was FUBAR, but the Army proved their valor.
Saw this when I was 10 and even after 10 years, still gives me the creeps. Love it!
freaking good - and scary as hell
even this is better than Brad Spitt's World War Z
Each chapter of the book is not just a set piece, its a sociological insight. As Thad said, the Israeli situation is a completely different (actually diametrically different) message. In the book the Israelis adapted fastest and best, but were torn apart by internal strife, whereas the Americans at yonkers did not adapt and got absolutely mullered because they thought the solution was MOOAAAR guns.
Great insight into the national character actually ;-)
Where the HELL did you get those sounds from.
Its bloody terrifying!!!!
Nice job though!
That many G's moaning at once; imagine, you're firing fullauto, explosions are going off all around you, but you can't hear them because the moans are louder than the munitions!
It’s actually in burst fire to keep hitting their heads. Unless they were pissing themselves which is literally what most of them did. Understandably so seeing how screwed they were
Can't shake the chills off when the moans cover gunfire. Third time I watch this and still can't get quite used to it.
i a big fan of the book. thank you for this. it was my top 3 fave parts .
If only they had a scene like this in the movie Hollywood needs to ruin another book I read along with I am legend which they totally miss the point of the human vampire roles getting switched
I actually liked the movie. It was pretty good to me.
But there is no denying that it was nothing like this.
That movie cost 200 million without the battle of yonkers, but when they were in newark you could tell yonkers had happened with the panic going on.
If you could get a million bucks and the right location you could make that scene. If I could make it I would, perhaps one day enough fans can try to make it.
Better than the piece of shit we got in the cinema. The sound is perfect. Leaves your imagination to create the rest.
The battle of yonkers was a conceptual defeat. In much the same way as the weapons in WW1 changed the rules of warfare from the pitched battles of the last century to trench warfare, Yonkers represents a military brilliantly prepared to fight the LAST war and refusing to adapt to the new one.
Anyone spot the not so subtle dig at the wars of the last 10 years or so?
this is fucking scary as shit. good work
@armchairmaster yup. the book says they had to join up with the chinese space station(abandoned and explosively booby-trapped) to survive. the guy max interviewed in the book died three days after the interview.
listen to this in the dark with earphones, it made my skin fucking crawl! I LOVE IT!
Excellent artwork - and the sound track blew me away! Perfectly sums the battle up. I've a feeling that hearing those deafening moans would drive me right over the edge.
They feel no pain...
Wow, I'm glad I listened to this whole video. I've seen the artwork before and figured this was just a rehash. But those sound effects of war coupled with the moaning and yelling was chilling. It's exactly what I picture in my head as I read World War Z.
Well done!
World War Z, has to be one of the best books I've read in a long long time!
Great audio. Sounds terrifying towards the end.
WWZ managed to turn zombies from a power fantasy or a social critique to literal hell on earth
Even with large numbers i still find it hard to believe the military got over run
The sky was red that day.
@halo10001 Yeah dude, I also want them to have the story of that woman that has the mind of a 4 year old, that chapter really hit me
The Brass really screwed up at the Battle of Yonkers. They were under the impression that it was a conventional battle and not realize that most of the G’s were already dead
if i heard those moans in the middle of the night i'd shit so many bricks. barely started reading this book but damn its good so far!
This was distrubing and yet awesome at the same time. Good work.
That was crazily awesome. God I hope the film version of Yonkers is basically exactly that. That moan was intense.
Wow after reading the book and hearing this.... very eerie.
Dude Fucking Sweet. You Should of Put Hold the Line in there too
Listened to this at 12:30 last night. Scary dreams.
A few thousand soldiers vs a horde of 4 million
i keep wondering if this really happened... but i love the book its awsome and very exciting.
It's described that there was over a million in the horde assaulting one spot. Can you imagine what a million of them moaning would sound like. You'd be able to hear it from miles away. I think I'd literally shit myself from the sound alone. Now imagine hearing that noise and seeing the entire horde from somewhere high up. And some people wish this would really happen? Fuck that!
What battle? It was a fucking massacre.
If this is what I heard over the radio while gearing up to head in, I'd start heading in the OTHER direction
you know this is gonna be serious when both leonardo dicaprio and brad pitts production companies were in a bidding war for the rights to the movie, it will probably be one of the most epic movies ever made, especially the yonkers part cause no real zombie movie has ever had a scene with a full scale war against millions of zombies, awesome!!!!!
@@minecraftdude909090 what a disappointment that move was lol
@IsengardMordor I agree. The Slow ones just show that no matter what you do they will be coming for you. Its just gives more fear then the running zombies.
@cleon24769 The other issue was that they had the soldiers on the ground rather than "a fireteam in every window" of the tall buildings lining the road. From up there, they could barricade the first couple of floors and just sit calmly and pick them off, the way they eventually do across the whole the country.
dude seriously cleon this is still like the scariest fuckin thing ive ever seen. If I ever do My Reenactment of this chapter like the interview part I will definately have a scene where todd looks at this picture as a painting and the sound plays in as he remembers the battle. so think of that why dont ya
damn this sound file gave me the chills, hopefully the studio that is making this, and their higher powers, execute and present this movie right
whoa.....that's some scary shit and imagining it doesn't help me sleep too well tonight...... aww well watching more zombie movies XD
In this picture it actually looks like the soldiers are going to win.
Poor soldiers.
i think this is like 28 days/weeks later except the soldiers use every arsenal they have
Creepy as shit!! I almost wish this was longer. Nice job.
STAY OFF THE LINK
yeah,i know but he said zombies are unstoppable.
D: > I hope a real zombie war doesn't break out D:
HEY BUDDY! I LIVE THERE! THAT'S MY CITY YOU'RE FIGHTIN' IN!
listen to the first few seconds of this, then listen to the intro of metallica's "ONE", before the guitar kicks in..
the best part of the book
I really hope they make this scene epic in the movie....this is one of the best parts of the book.
snuck into my cousin's room and played this on his computer with volume way up.... flipped off the screen and ran out giggling.
I call dibs on sealed power armour.
I hope the movie also includes the story of the Japanese Otaku escaping from Kyoto, that was really awesome.
Spoiler: I think the worst part during the battle of Yonkers where I felt like genuine shit for a dude was the soldier getting his gas mask ripped off on camera and his face getting mutilated for everyone to see, and the book describing the sheer terror in his eyes. Can’t remember where exactly but if it was the news than I can’t think of any better way to tell America to get fucked)
I was peeved that we didn't get Yonkers in teh movie, but you could say that I got my "Yonkers Moment" in Jerusalem.
@savagethedrummer
some guy was in space for the ENTIRE WAR?
the war was, I think, 10 YEARS long!
makes me wanna write a scenario with survivors within that battle zone..ya know surviving despite all the zombie roars and Army jets ETC...This vid always creeps me out out.
i bet when world war z comes out in i think 2012 i just know the battle of yonkers and the part where the zombies are in texas are done awesome. i hope the director doesn't screw this book.
maybe I am missing something here! I got a static picture for 57 seconds and a bunch of indecipherable music and noise.
Heh, ta :)
I wrote the "Prequal" in the thought that it was his first book, but I can see your point =D
lol
To quote a line from Sam and Max on PS2:
Sam: This seismograph is either broken or for use in the bathroom.
Bosko: Don't TOUCH IT! I need that for extreme emergencies...
Max: Like the dead rising?
Bosko: WHAT DO YOU THINK EARTHQUAKES ARE!?....
D:
why dont they make a game like this were you are the military and simply have to hunt and kill zombies with friends using helicopters etc.
I think that someone should make a movie about the, "road to New York". The beginning could be a flashback to the battle of Yonkers. Then it could flash forward to Paul Waino training for the new army, and the battle of Hope. It could fallow them all across the liberation of America. It could deal with all the problems of feral animals, feral children, LAMOE's,liberations, rebels, and disease, along with the zombies. This is what I would like to see. Audio is great though.
This is the scariest shit I've experienced in a while; it is a picture and audio. That says a lot.l
@halo10001 Was that the part about the kid who used bedsheets to climb down his apartment building? If so, that was pretty awesome.
Wait, what?
Isn't that the intro of ONE... ? xD
It sounds very similar.
you couldnt tell the difference between a real AK and a movie sound effect? cause they sound very different
AWESOME!!!!! only got about 5 pages left and im gonna finish them right now.
@cleon24769 thats because they expected the tanks, artillery, and bombs to actually do something. Also remember that this battle was all about getting people pumped and giving them the lets kick some ass attitude. you cant really get that with a single company or battalion. but a division of men, 10000 men, could easily get that attitude and spread it around..... if they won that is
actually, i dont know if world war z can be made into a movie because its mostly people who survived the war being interveiwed. on second thought it might work because it has alot of action and fighting but then i go back to my first statement.
:/
@Wolfboy2012 The author of the book said he loved it so i think so!
@EUFede super idea. what happens when the tanks run outta gas? There's no more infrastructure in the world anymore, cause the once-infrastructure is now trying to 'eat-your-brains'. You might have a full tank of diesel / whatever-the-hell they use to fuel tanks, but what happens once that's out. Where do you get more fuel?
Hopefully they will be slow Zombies. Heard somewhere it might be the fast versions
yeah if anything its a real version of the Warmbrun Night Report or whatever it is but yeah the ZSG is pretty much the real version of that
I loved the book. Before I read it some one told me that gore in a book is just as cool as gore in a movie (which it isn't), now I realize if you tell it right it actually almost is.
you know there was a audio book of the novel...
@crotchshotradioshow. Um what?? Yonkers is a city of 200,000 people. I happen to live there and last time i checked it still exists.
I really liked the book, but come on, Yonkers? No soldier thought of getting to the roofs and safely pick targets from there?
Can't wait to see this in theaters. Especially when the helicopters crash into each other and the one tries to use it's rotor to kill zack
Err are you sure about that? The narrator references zombies multiple times. They aren't unknowns to that universe. I think your getting it confused with the Walking Dead, in which Romero never writes the Night of the Living Dead and zombies never become a pop culture icon.
Hell Yeah With some Battle of One (30 Seconds to Mars) Playing full blast.
Yeah those armor crews are pretty living up at those tanks
You can't stop zombies, the US used basically everything in their arsenal. Remember they used A-10s, F-35s, F-15Es, F-22s, AV-8B Harriers and F-16s. Also Commanches, AH-1 Cobras, AH-6 Little Birds and AH-64D Apaches. They used Drones (MQ-1, MQ-9, RQ-1). They used M1A2 Abrams tanks. They used M2A3 IFVs, as well as AAVs, LAV-25s, Strykers, HMMWVS (with M60s, M2HBs, M240s, TOWs and Mk.19) as well as FIM-92 Stingers, Javelins, AT4, SMAWS, M79, M4A1s, M16A4s, m249s and m240s.
vs zombies. Zombies win.
not all lmao No AC-130 No B2 spirit bomber eh?
@livingmylifeatmach2 the audio version doesnt include about 30 or 40 of the stories. the book is pretty ballin', even has an account of a guy who was on the international space station throughout the whole war. brooks covered every angle conceivable.
Sit in pitch darkness with a good pair of headphones on, and crank this up... *shudder*
Thank you for spelling out my nightmare. I'm LAR
@Wolfboy2012 they're filming in my city center either tonite or somtime during the coming days, brad pitt arrives tonite to see the set lol. they're filming it in glasgow, scotland.
Fuck dude this is badass. At first I thought it woudl be stupid. Then you watch it and just stare at it and your really in the battle. Creepy shit. You should do another from one of the other pictures. PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Shock and aw to utter terror. .
i think those mortors and arty should have fired airburst shells and they should have used bouncing bettys
Does anybody else notice that the begining matches the intro to One by Metallica
