The sarcasm Hamill brings to the character is perfection. I read this near the end of my enlistment in the Corps and I read this character in my mind as a salty vet that pointed out the stupidity of the brass in charge. He got alot of stuff wrong, even his own rules. He says zombies are immune to overpreasure and that is why military munitions didn't work here, but later in the book it shows a bunch of zeds die when a cars gas tank goes up. He also doesn't seem to know that steel rain would have, as the name suggests, rained down on the zombies heads.
@@elitemook4234 Alright, two things. Gas tanks blowing up results in not just an explosion, but also a fireball. Fire works on zombies. Secondly, they make it pretty clear that the steel rain did kill a large amount of zombies, just not enough. Because while fatal head wounds can happen from shrapnel, it's not like it's a guaranteed kill on every zombie in the blast zone since shrapnel is random.
They should of made this a mini-series with the exact same story/reporter narrative. It would of been dope.. especially yonkers as maybe a two part season ender Brad Pitt ruined it
I've got a friend who joined the marines because he was homeless at the time. He did one stint, took the GI bill, got himself a masters in city planning and never looked back. He told me the most accurate way to describe military life is that quote from Generation Kill. "You know what happens when you get out of the Marine corps? You get your brains back."
Honestly I’m really surprised they dug trenches like I get it’s for press but really trenches? Zeke will literally just pool ontop of any soldier unfortunate enough to be in one. If you are going to try and use trenches to fight zombies then put them up front and fill it with plastic explosives or thermite or even both. If they dug trenches up front they could have at the very least used the excess terrain that was dug up to build large mounds almost like hills and surrounded with sand bags or even just walls(assuming they were using excavators I pray those men weren’t told to pull out shovels for this bs) that way they could have at least some high ground and not get surrounded by zack so easily.
Hell, just put the trenches between you and Zeke and fill it with flammable shit. Then when Zeke gets close set it on fire, let Zeke do the body cleanup for you!
The whole setup of Yonkers was based around arty and airpower doing the actual killing while the tanks and soldiers looked cool for the cameras. This is why the tanks were given sabot rounds, why the soldiers were given impractical MOPP4 biohazard suits and were not supplied with a convoy of ammo trucks, and it is why they were all stood in trenches in front of the hoard like idiots instead of being placed on the roofs of the surrounding buildings or engaging in hit and run tactics- they weren't expected to have to do anything. And if not for the author suddenly making the zombies magically immune to shrapnel and explosions, even though zombies in that same book died when a car’s gas tank went up, they wouldn’t have needed to do anything but look cool for the camera. Yonkers comes down to contrivance and the author pulling rules out of his ass when it suited him to fulfil a predetermined conclusion. He needed the military to lose Yonkers or else the book would have ended so he gave them the idiot ball and hand waved basic logic and the lore that he himself established on how his zombies were supposed to work- (modern military munitions would not be less effective than a car’s gas tank exploding) so that the guys on the ground would be ‘shock and awed’ by the zombies, panic and run away. That’s all there is too it.
They weren't "Immune" to shrapnel, it's even said "it's not like Zack skipped through the barrage unscathed". The issue is that Shrapnel depends on either killing with a body hit or wounding with a limb hit. Neither work on Zack. If they have an intact brain, and some way to drag themselves, they will keep coming. Unless you get a lucky shot on the head, that Shrapnel ain't doing shit. Even the gas tanks weren't that much more effective, only reason they were was a more potent explosion, and more shrapnel. If anything it made Zack more dangerous, since it basically turned a bunch of them into "living" landmines. Plus, the biggest reason for the route, was that thanks to Land Warrior, the soldiers could see all 8 million Zeds, streaking in one long line from Yonkers all the way to Times Square. They didn't think they could kill that many, especially when word starting circling around, again thanks to Land Warrior, that the Zeds weren't dying to Headshots (that was wrong, but panick makes you a little stupid). So, everyone started running, and it got worse when thanks, again, to Land Warrior, everyone could see one of their guys get brutally killed in full detail from some Zeds that were behind the lines by accident
@@ntfoperative9432 Describing a contrivance straight doesn’t stop it being a contrivance. Case and point, land warrior does not work the way it did in the book. The entire set up was contrived to make the military loose because if they'd won the book would end. At the end of the day Zombies are nothing more than humans which lack everything that makes humans even remotely hard to kill. And the author (and you) really don't appreciate what modern munitions do to a human body.
@@elitemook4234 and you missed the point. The zombies were never a threat, they were never meant to be a threat. The threat was human nature. At Yonkers, from the soldiers perspective, the guns weren't doing shit, because even though they probably still did kill hundreds of Zeds, there were millions more waiting to take their place. Plus it's explained, pretty thoroughly, why the munitions weren't as effective as usual. One, in 2006, when the book is set, the main tactic when using artillery was not destruction, it was shock and awe; scare your enemies, make them lose the will to fight; zed don't get scared, doesn't get shock and awed. Two, the balloon effect wasn't nearly as effective because the Zeds blood was basically gel at this point, so it negated the shockwave, something that happens in real life. Three, sudden nerve trauma, "God flicking your life switch" was nearly as effective because it depends on the shockwave shutting down your organs, mainly your heart; Zed don't need his heart, only his brain, meaning he isn't nearly as affected by SNT. Four, and the one you've been waiting for, shrapnel. Shrapnel, by its very nature, is unpredictable; normally that's not an issue, because humans are very fragile beings, put enough holes in them and they die; Zed's different, they only need their brain, that's it, so unless you get lucky and some shrapnel pierces the Cranial cavity, Zacks not going down
