- In December 2022, Robert Fico, Slovakia’s former prime minister, was facing a slew of criminal charges which, if proven, would have seen the populist firebrand put behind bars.
However, the charges were dropped, and in an election which observers say was fuelled by hate speech and pro-Kremlin conspiracy theories, Robert Fico was returned to power in September 2023.
Fico has been accused of frequently insulting the country’s minorities, so many of those groups are now fearful of what the future holds. Over the border, conscious of Fico’s promise to block sanctions against Russia and veto a European Union package of military support for Kyiv, Ukrainians are bracing themselves for the inevitable consequences of a pro-Kremlin neighbour his critics say is bent on breaking the EU consensus on support for Ukraine.

There is another layer to the whole story... Yesterday there was a presidential election day in Slovakia and one of the running candidates, Peter Pellegrini, is actually a close ally of Robert Fico.
Pellegrini won these election and there is a group of people who are afraid that now Fico consolidated all the power in the country, because to these people it seems like Pellegrini is just a puppet, or "bag holder" (podržtaška in Slovak), as we say in Slovakia.
There were already attempts of the government to take over the public broadcaster RTVS, Fico is attacking the Supreme Court judges and our foreign affairs minister is shaking hands with Sergey Lavrov, russian foreign affair minister, who is currently on a list of sanctioned persons due to the russian invasion of Ukraine.
And now, when Fico has his man in a Presidential Palace, who will sign any law sent by government, it's really fair to say that there is too much power consolidated in one's hands.
And it's especially dangerous when there is an international reputation in stake.

I allways saw AlJazeera's reports as ballanced and fair. Now after seeing this one sided one about our country without one question asked/answered by Fico and co. I am starting to doubt all the other reports I have seen. And I was one of the peoples lighting a candle for Jan.. sad times for Journalism

If you don’t recognize the corruption and abuse of human rights in Slovakia, go and watch kid’s channel, Alzeera is reporting on situation/ timeline of the events, when u have a significant politician that is worlwide knows for being pro-Putin as his rhetoric clearly indicate it, the reporters will be looking at why is coming back after resigning due to the pressure of public to do so. and as pointed above by a fellow Slovak citizen, it is mentioned that the end that he has refused to comment. Wake up to the facts!

I have always held Al Jazeera in high regard as one of the few objective media outlets in the world. However, I must say,that this video produced by them seems very one-sided and contains many false facts. The individuals interviewed in the video are all supporters of an unsuccessful presidential candidate who declared that Israel's military response to Gaza was legitimate. I believe that Al Jazeera should investigate and interview the other side, which was elected in the democratic parliamentary election. Additionally, it would be helpful to know the story behind the special prosecutor, as well as on how many occasions were human rights violated during the previous government's 3.5-year tenure.
Agreed, it is surprising to see a high degree of one sidedness from Al Jazeera. Many statements in this documentary are selectively taken out of context and deliberately manipulated to fit a certain narrative. I am not a Fico or government advocate or apologist but this is not objective.
Exactly! It's worth questioning why AJ is reporting on events that are not so recent. The murder of Jan Kuciak and Martina Kušnirova took place in 2018, while the Ukraine-Russia war conflict happened in 2022 and the election of Fico and his party took place 6 months ago. I believe there are many more serious problems in the world today that are worth dedicating a 25-minute video to. The fact that the video was posted just 3 days before the second round of presidential elections is probably just a coincidence. Very expensive campaign move or just another act of humiliation of Slovakia and its citizens by politicians who can't even proudly accept defeat in DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS and shame their own country everywhere they go. Disappointed by one of my favorite objective media outlets that I respected for their excellent work especially in revealing the uncensored truth on world situations.
I am waiting for a report on Pelligrini’s campaign to challenge your thoughts on how well the nation did, how he abused the campaign to brainwash people with the lies about the second candidate. However, this one is on return of Fico who resigned after the pressure of the public from his post, who is clearly known for his Pro-Putin rhetoric and who clearly abuse his power to prevent the justice. It’s heartbreaking and alarming where our country is heading. Every intelligent person in Slovakia who is able to see through the lies and look at the facts, who has consciousness did not vote for Pellegrini who serves to Fico’s ideology. Please Alzeera go deeper, investigate also on the fact that new president has been supported by other politician who clearly are far from democracy. Surely, if there have been any abuse of human rights in other governments, it should be looked at too. Lastly, at the end it say Fico was approached to comment but declined. Hear, Hear, Surprise, Surprise! the results of the voting is a showcasing the lack intellingence and awareness of Slovak nation, vulnerability to misinformation that filled with hate towards everyone and to each other and how even corrupted common people of our country really are, reflecting back to Fico and his gang of pawns. If you would have watched it till the end, you would hear that Fico himself was asked by documentarists to make an appearance in the documentary, but he refused it.

Here we also have murders of romani, of journalists that was after mafia-politician scandals whose case is being covered up and we also have lgbt murders and attacks.
The difference is that our government is anti-nativist and anti-russia and pro-lgbt. A politician that would be the closest equivalent of Ficos regime would probably be Velopoulos but he runs only 1 of the 3 small right wing poltical parties in parliament because right-wing politics here is devided into many small parties with little to no perspective into winning elections.

and you know what the kick is? Fico is not even remotely right wing never was, he was always the champion of the left-leaning scene here in Slovakia, and this just goes to show the true issue with Fico and why he is so dangerous, he simply does not have any and I mean principles or core foundations to stand on, his views are simply said fluid, copying the flow of their perspective voter base. When people want to join Nato and EU he gladly obliges, when people want to leave he gladly obliges and goes and chants anti-west rhetoric and on and on it goes in this vicious cycle. So in its very essence he should, as a politician, bear no prospect from the voters perspective, since why would you want for someone who has repeatedly shown utter disregard to honoring his promises views and doctrine which ultimately made you decide to vote for him. And this the main issue, and despite all of this his large voter base does not seem to mind this fact one bit, which is extremely scary and disturbing.
@@jakubsmelka3458 I think youre a bit too insecure about your future. What you described is just what typical populist politicians do all over the world in various degrees of hypocrisy. In slavic cultures I, as a sorta westerner, often observe that the socially conservative politicians tend to just be members of the "old guard" of the ex-communist political elites that ruled your countries. Thankfully we were on the other side of the iron curtain...which means that our political tendencies and perceptions have evolved a bit different than yours.
BTW on the contrast of what I said, our oldest political party is the communist party of Greece (KKE) which is a relatively socially conservative one in some approaches (like gay marriage which was a very recent big issue in my country, because on average we are actually socially consirvative culture overall).
@@kd1405 Look, I 100% agree that, what I described is definitely an issue in most countries and an unwritten rule in basically all the post communist ones, however that is exactly why this issue should be brought up more and why there should be constant discourse on this topic. I don't really understand why am I being "bit too insecure about my future" when all I want for my country is to finally move forward and to be a well functioning country. After all what else is there other than a constant need to better oneself and thrive as a society. Without this sentiment we all might as well just sit quietly. refuse to take part in public affairs and watch as we slowly stagnate and regress. Democracy is by far the best societal structure we as humans have ever come up with, you as a Greek should know that, after all your ancestors came up with it, however without an active population who willingly engages itself in public affairs this system simply can not function properly. There is a potential to be far better as a state and its simply painful to see that potential be squandered and trampled over so easily. Honestly if SMER(the ruling party) at least really tried and I mean put hardcore effort into elaborate schemes, and really worked on the misinformation campaign, from my perspective it wouldn't have been that bad because I could understand how certain demographic groups could fall for it, but these days they don't even have to try really, and that's scary, how effortless it is for them to influence and swing public opinion.

Consider the fact that your parents as well as your as your grandparents were brought up in a society that taught them comminism-good, daddy-state will take care ect. I once met a guy who is half czech and he told me that his grandparents up there still identify as communists...even though that system collapsed right in front of their eyes.
In my opinion your country is in a quiet good path for the moment as youre approaching us in terms of per capital wealth production (due to both the facts that we have recessed and you have risen...). This is how you demonize “inconvenient” politician, Tell just half of the story and even that half modify to support demanded narrative. Of course interview just Fico’s opponents, who discredited themselves countless times in the past.
First, I would like to tell, that 20years ago, right before invasion of Iraq, Fico opposed Slovak participation and was called populist for that (including by people interviewed here), that was one of the first political “struggle”, which I was noticing in my early teenage years. Since than he was more less consistent in his at least hesitation to support, despite many times succumbed to pressure, which was in stark contrast to his opponents.
In September, he won the parliamentary elections not thanks to Russian propaganda, but due to terrible performance of 3 previous governments since 2020. These years were full of huge mistakes and outright violations of our constitution, democratic principles and good habits (of course they do not mention here government officials regularly calling each other by various bad names, or protesters “monkeys” or “desolates”). Mainstream media for all these 3 years somehow forgot to criticize government and instead of that they were constantly “explaining” to public, why it is actually good. To illustrate “popularity” of previous governments, Eduard Heger, former prime minister interviewed here, got less than 3%. Today’s parliamentary opposition managed to get to parliament mostly by distancing themselves from previous 3 years. Mostly by the massive help of media (all mainstream media supports them) and in case of OLANO party by some kind of miracle. That is at least my feeling based on interaction with their electorate.
To Fico’s animosity with media, I will just provide example. 2 years ago Fico was in TV debate with minister of foreign affairs Ivan Korčok, todays (hopefully unsuccessful) presidential candidate with topic of bilateral DCA agreement with USA. That agreement basically provides to USA legal basis for smooth deployment of troops in our territory. Text of agreement was freely available in Slovak to anybody, despite that anything what Fico quoted from the text of DCA (he had it printed in front of him), Korčok and moderator accused him of spreading hoaxes. All that just relying on people not to read 40 pages to check it (I did after heated arguments with colleagues). Our media are full of such outright shameless lies. After Paris meeting in February, one week after Macrons admission that troop deployment in Ukraine was one of the topic, I still heard in TV claims, that it was not and Fico just lied.
Criminal charges against Fico were based on press conference 4-5 years ago, where he claimed that President Kiska did tax fraud. In the meantime it was confirmed that he did, but that time Fico could know it with 100% certainty just if he would abuse his power. But he could thinks it that time without 100% certainty (but high possibility) as many of us, common citizens with publicly available information did. It was charge of creating organized criminal group, so he would be persecuted by prosecutor. Head of that special prosecutor office was his political enemy since I remember, Daniel Lipšic (by the way he didn’t fullfill criteria to be head of that office, so they changed the law for him).
Special prosecutor office is rarity in Europe, they were popular in 1930-40s and it is good move to disband it (despite quite late and too little) and new criminal code is aligning our criminal penalties with European standards (we had them one of the most if not most harsh in Europe). So basically diminishing oppressive power of the state over their citizens is clear sign of autocracy according to opposition and media and resignation of government with clear majority in parliament few months after election would be democratic.
Slovak society is very divided and for opposition and NGOs like Globsec, with support of mass media, it is quite easy to organize massive protests in Bratislava (centrum of their support) and other big cities.
There are many questionable claims in video and a lot of context should be explained, but it is too much for comment. In my personal view, people interviewed in the video are not acting in good faith. I knew (not personally) most of them for quite a long time and I saw them lie in order to lobby for many bad things like support for wars, cuts in social support or economical treason of Slovakia. I do not agree with our government on many issues, often I do not like rhetoric used by them, but I hate that these type of people in document are mostly only one who get the chance to describe events in Slovakia.
PS: I would exclude Mrs Kušnírová from my negative labeling of people in document. I somehow understand why she has opinions and feelings which she has, but that does not mean that her opinions are proper description of the reality.

Musel by som vedieť, že Fica oslovili, a že neodpovedal, čo mi ušlo a zaregistroval som to až teraz na ďalšie vypočutie, že to v závere spomínali. No čo je podstatnejšie, musel by som napísať, že mu nedali možnosť vyjadriť sa, čo som nenapísal.
Nech už boli okolnosti toho, ako bol žiadaný o vyjadrenie akékoľvek, nič to nemení na tom, že z dokumentu sa dozvedáme, len pohľad zo strany jeho oponentov.
Čítať to nemusíte, nikto nemusí. Primárne som to nemienil pre ľudí zo Slovenska, či Česka, ktorý majú takú či onakú predstavu o tom všetkom a tú neviem zmeniť ani len u známych, ktorým mám možnosť argumentovať oveľa viac a zároveň pre nich nie som len „nikto“ na internete. Písal som to pre ľudí zo zahraničia, ktorí si vytvárajú predstavu o našej krajine na základe tohto dokumentu, pretože ma trápi, že im je prezentovaný len obraz, s ktorým nesúhlasím. A za tým čo som napísal si stojím.
I am really sorry, but this is not journalism but nearly propaganda. Very one sided and you are discussing only with his political rivals or media personalities which are not neutral. Fico is symbol of corruption and there were charges, but they did not have anything (evidence) to put him in front of court. Also if you are comparing him to Putin, you are really funny. Question is why Aljazeera made this document....anyway he was elected democratically and this matters. According to me this is a bit propaganda documentary with an aim.
While its true that the elections were fully in accordance with democratic principles, that is by far not all that matters, think about that statement, hitlers NSDAP was also elected fully democratically and how did that end up? The communist party in Czechoslovakia was also supposedly elected democratically ( there is good evidence that suggests soviet influence, but that's another story). Under normal and ideal circumstances the outcome of the elections should leave the part of the population that voted for the other candidate or party unsatisfied only based off of socio-economic stances. Under normal circumstances my issue with Pellegrini, as an economically right-leaning voter , should be the fact that he is left-leaning and our economic doctrines differ, that would all well and good and would in no way bother me since I would say to myself "Okay people here are more left leaning understandable", however the issue here is that his entire campaign was built on top of lies or simply unwillingness to answer many very important questions, now what that means in the big picture is that for some reason his voters decided to vote for someone whose stances on important matters are not clear, whose to say that Pellegrini will not be west-leaning or the entire government if it suits them? Whose to say that he will honor his voters wishes? Many of these voters voted for Pellegrini only because the other candidate was falsely demonized and only because of that. Do you now see the issue, let me give you an example Ficos campaign in the last years elections was largely built on pro russian and anti-ukraine speech. Do his voters even know that companies either directly owned or tied to his arguably right-hand man Kalinak have been selling military equipment to Ukraine? Why arent his voters who hold contempt for Ukraine angry about that? Another great example a pivotal point of Smers campaign was to bring food prices down. What was their first major step once they had taken office? A novelization of the criminal law with one of the major points being more lenient punishments for economic crime. So leniency towards economic crimes takes precedent over measures to combat high food prices? Why aren't their voters angry about that? And this where we finally get to my main point, the answer is that their voters truly don't care about any real issues or simply don't want to care, for the average smer voter trying to figure the answer as how to actually achieve many of Smers campaign goals would overheat them and make them shutdown, populists like Fico are great at creating imaginary enemies, to create hate, fear and anger. His voters are too busy fearing and hating the west, ukraine, liberals and so on, because its easy and you don't really have to think about it that hard as opposed to real issues that grip this country, they are simply unable to question the governments steps because they have been conditioned into thinking that going against the current government is what a "liberal" would do that and that would, in their twisted world, be worst the thing imaginable. And if we, as a country, should be satisfied or content with the fact that the majority of the population is operating this way , then we have truly fallen as low as we could and we do not deserve a brighter future, just slow and painful decay into ruin, for someone who can allow himself to be manipulated this easily and effortlessly without putting any real effort into understanding issues that grip themselves and their country can only expect despair, the only unfortunate thing is that the other roughly 46% of the population will be dragged down along with them.

Fico is best Slovakian politician and one of the best in Europe. If people abroad know what is Fico figting against for nearly 25 years they would be amazed. It is miracle ! Перемога України і зупинення росії дійсно принесе сталий мир в Європі. Керівники кремля і створювали ще з часів срср усюди мати власний вплив. Думаю,що замало правдивої інформації розповсюджувалось в самій Словаччині останні десятки років. Просто люди знають мало правди і цим громадянам, так званим, росіянам нема чого жити в країнах, які у кремлівських планах на поневолення та знищення. У кремля не вдається захопити,то тоді вони діють медійним способом та пропонують користь. Москва намагається протиставити проросійського кандидата чомусь неправдивому та вигаданому їми таки самими. Звісно, не цей трюк і ведуться довірливі громадяни. В чому сам трюк обману? - Спершу проросійська пропаганда методично просуває теми яка погана вільна Америка,Європа та вільна Азія, а цей(певний) кандидат проти і люди помилково вирішують так: .
Підкуп є також дієвим способом для просування у вільний світ московських наративів. Імперія московія(російська федерація) існує завдяки підкупу майбутніх жертв, захопленню нових території, посилання військ та медіа пропаганди на нові ганебні справи по розширенню імперії. Імперія російська федерація інсує доки захоплює. За користю та благами від москви завжди йде те, що діється зараз в Україні. З 199х років москва лише підкупляла колаборантів в країнах - жертвах, згодом знищувала ці країни як тільки могли приєднуючи до себе, грабуючи ці країни та знищуючи культуру, ідентичність та будь-який потенціал націй. Подивіться зараз на російську федерацію і побачите царя - недоумка, кілька відбудованих центрів тієї незрозумілої вигаданої культури і величезні пограбовані та пригнічені території з одураченим населенням. Кремль посилав чоловіків поневолених країн на слідуючи війни і захоплення, а в ті місця навмисно підселяв чоловіків з інших націй. Не добровільно і не за власним вибором ці маніпуляції та переселення-депортації, а навмисно від скажених загарбницьких намірів. Головні російські цінності це шапка ушанка, горілка, балалайка і це не жарти, які тому населенню нав'язували тривалими десятиліттями. Шалений московський експеримент по створенню нації "русские" набрав обертів зараз та плани кремля не змінилися. Сподіваюсь, що одна проросійська людина в Словаччині не вирішує курс держави і ще може переосмислити чи піти у відставку передчасно. Кремль та росіяни не хочуть миру. Кремль хоче влізти в довіру і потім розтоптати та знищити.
