  • Dinky's Thunderbird 2 was launched in 1967. Due to its popularity, it was produced in several different versions, until production stopped in 1975. It is often believed that the Thunderbird 2 was produced in many colors other than green because children avoided green things, i.e. vegetables! You can turn on subtitles in your language with the action commentary in the video. The first version of this model featured four bolts in the base model and one rivet in the container. This version also had thin legs which were a very weak element of this model. In the 70's the legs were made thicker. In my copy, all the legs were damaged. There was only one leg left in its entirety, but it was very crooked. I made new legs out of steel wire and put a copper tube clamp on it. Putting it together turned out to be a very stressful activity and required a lot of patience. I also made a box compatible with the original one from this year. Thank you for watching the movie, I publish videos with the repair of cars on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Wonderful re-engineering of this beast, Paul! From the pristine patch of paint inside to match, to the lathe-turned exhaust master, to the hit glue cast replacements, to the replacement landing gear legs. Just brilliant modelling, Paul. The finish is gorgeous.

Do dziś dobrze pamiętam serię "Thunderbird".
    Dobra robota 😎
Dzięki za udostępnienie, zdecydowanie kciuki ode mnie za to 👍🏼

I still remember the "Thunderbird" series well. (It was on TV again some time ago and I enjoyed watching it again, even as an "old man").
Great work, Paul, the models look first class again. The technical refinements work perfectly again too 👍🏼.
    Well done 😎
Thanks a lot for sharing, definitely a thumbs up from me for this 👍🏼
Have a great weekend to you and your family and stay safe and sound.
Keep up the good work, mate.

I vividly remember mine. Yes, you're right; T4 was plastic. I had Thunderbird 3 as well. I also had a larger T4 bath toy. I think my favourite, though, was the large plastic Stingray which I had, which was powered to move in the bath. Of the Thunderbirds vehicles, T2 was always my favourite. My mother used to love the trees falling away to the side on launch. It cracked her up every time! 🌴

Mine too, Between me and my brother we had them all, I had T2 and T3 and 4, he had T1 and T5 (which was a big toy). But I have to say that, at least here in the UK, the green was the proper green, the colour, here is not a T2 colour and in fact the yellow of T4 is not right either,

    Very nice restoration.
The Thunderbird 4 is actually a Matchbox one from the early 1990's when they made their toy line to coincide with re-runs of Thunderbirds on BBC TV here in the UK. The Dinky one was smaller and made of a single plastic moulding with a minimal amount of detailing (red engines and the number 4 on either side).

About 30 years ago I worked with a guy who was an antique toy collector/dealer, as it turns out there are usually
quite a comprehensive backstory to some, if not all of these die cast toys.
Reasons as to why the Thunderbird 2 was so inaccurate in both colour and design. Both faults were corrected in
the final incarnation of which I have 2 mint examples.
So why are the original 60's versions blue and not green. ?
Apparently Dinky had a surplus of blue metallic paint and because back in the day everyone watched Thunderbirds
on a Black and White TV set they thought nobody would ever notice.
Why are the wings placed too far forward on these early models to the point it looks awful.?
Dinky were forced to move the wings into that position to accommodate the side push buttons for the leg
deployment apparently designed by a different department.
Your video is highly interesting and I shall be watching more of your content.
There used to be people out there (again I'm talking about a long time ago) who produced spare parts for classic
toys even copies of the original packaging, I have no idea as to whether they still exist. They were every expensive
    though.

I have still got my toy T2, the 1970s reissue, yes Dinky made it more bluish green rather than the TV series solid green which I found annoying as a kid. There are no water transfer decals on mine, they just went with sticky labels. The T4 that comes with mine is made from hollow plastic, I remember filling it with yellow plasticine to give it more weight and a more solid underside. I no longer have the packaging but I remember it wasn't a box with mine, more a folded cardboard tray and a transparent molded top covering, the plastic legs are still intact and working. Some kids attempted to stand T4 on its legs then push the pod down which caused them to break. I avoided doing it. Lovely restoration, thanks for the video.

I do wonder why Dinky often chose odd colours for their diecast toys. Thunderbird 2 is a great example, how difficult would it have been to make the paint green and the legs grey or black? Another one was the Space 1999 Eagle Transporter: the nuclear waste transporter was white IIRC but the personnel transporter was a very strange green colour lol

Back in the 70s we only had a black and white TV, up until 81. But for Xmas 77, my brother got this exact toy, in blue. So for the next few years I believed TB2 was blue. Imagine my shock and horror when we finally got a colour TV!
My brother passed away 2 years ago, but I've inherited his blue TB2, with original TB4, nothing broken but a few chips and scratches. It will stay that way too.
I also saved his 2 eagles. He managed to swap the bodies to create a full white Eagle, and a green/blue one.

As children my brother and I were avid Thunderbirds watchers. It always used to bother me that T2 would drop the pod for T4 in the sea, the door would open and T4 would slip down the ramp and go do its stuff. But how did they pick it all up afterwards?

Great job Paul, what a neat idea for it's legs, would never have thought of that. Hopefully my comment about Thunderbird 2's colour will help some people who criticise and say, it's the wrong colour, well, thats Dinky for you. As you've mentioned Paul, this model was released in 1967 and production stopped in 1975, this model that Paul has painted is a later production model in which its paint scheme had gone from green to a turquoise colour even though its model number is still 101, the later blue models were a new tooling and was given a new model number, # 106.
