- On my sewing vlog today: how to start, end and unpick (remove) coverstitch. I'm using both Juki MCS1500 and Babylock Ovation to demonstrate how easy it is to use a coverstitch machine.

Don’t be scared, you loose money only when you don’t use it 😉 it might take some practice but it’s going to be easier every time you use it 😊

A brilliant demonstration of a machine I don't own - would you consider doing a video for those of us who are still struggling with overlockers. My Janome 8002DX has a temper tantrum every time I begin to feel confident. Keep up the good work!
Thank you - and I know that it's not for everyone 😉 but when I got my coverstitch I struggled to find anything apart from very basic and dry manufacturer's videos. Also, I use my coverstitch machines loads and even though I know that my way of sewing might not be very popular I hope one day it might be 🤣🤣🤣 I don't really have a domestic overlocker anymore (I had 2 but had to make space for the industrial). The ovation is a combo but it is very unlike other domestic overlockers ...and I'm definitely NOT an expert on janome overlockers (I don't think they like me at all, even in the shop 🤣🤣🤣) Most overlockers don't like anything out of order in their threading so I have spent the best hours of my sewing days re-threading them 🤣🤣🤣 I will add some of my past issues to other videos (re: overlockers/sergers) but I only have the beast to demonstrate 🤣 (or the self- threading, self tension adjusting ovation that is actually the best example of a clever company strategy: remove any frustration from the machine and people will pay much more for it 😉)

Excellent video very clear instructions. Is it possible for you do a video on threading the Juki so many people seem to have a problem with the lower looper. Many thanks

Thank you Laura 😊 the starting and finishing rules apply to all coverstitch machines - remember to place the fabric under the foot and if you notice that your first stitch is lost, start with the needles in the fabric (and you can finish in the way I show in the video). I hope you love your machine and will have many happy sewing hours with her xxx
Love ur work I also have a juki and I really wanted a combo serger that has alll the attachments I bought a used Babylock evolution and broke a needle the lady
Said she hasn’t used it in years so sadly I had to get it serviced I already spent a lot hopefully it won’t be to much money to fix I think it might be timing or pressure foot pressure or something like that but it did need a cleaning and I love the cover stitch option I got The 22 pce set but what I don’t like about the baby lock is it’s loud and the knife seems to not cut like my older serger

Great vlog Alex - the Juki is a beast of a machine! So much more robust than the commercial ones! I am soooooooo tempted shhhhhhh!🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐 I’ve got the Janome CPX 2000 which is a good machine, but nowhere near as punchy as the Juki!
Thank you Lynne ♥️ though I don't think you need a new coverstitch (unless you really, really want to - then who am I to reason with that 🤣), the cpx 2000 can produce great results, too - some people absolutely love theirs (I just don't think janome overlockers or coverstitch machines are compatible with me...I'm not delicate or patient - both qualities are rated highly in a sewist, I know, but I lack both all the same ). I still think you need to give your janome some love and she'll love you back 😘

I sent you a message on Instagram because it seemed like a long question for here, but I’m struggling figuring out which is the coverstitch machine for me after returning (and being so grateful I could still return) the Janome 2000 I could not make work to save my life (or finish even a tiny part of a project). These videos are so helpful, thanks for answering the basics!
If I was going to buy a domestic one I'd buy either the juki or the blcs (the stand alone babylock) - I've sent you a message back - feel free to ask about any details (I've tested 2 brother ones, the janome and all jukis including their industrials 🤣)
What can you say about industrial coverstich?
Do you really like the Juki 1500?
I’m considering buying one and still have doubts. Don’t want a machine that will give me headaches or regrets.

Enjoyed this video. Did you know that you only have to start the coverstitch in fabric (with the BabyLock Evolution, Ovation, Triumph (and UK Equivalent), Stand Alone Coverstitch) for the first pass only? After that you can start the machine off the fabric! I also noticed that the BabyLock machines make a narrower “wide coverstitch” than the Brother top coverstitch machine that I used to own.
Thank you Loriann ♥️ I know the ovation and the gloria can chain off and in theory start off the fabric- but I personally have never managed to avoid a skipped stitch after such a start (also, when I chain off the risk of skipped stitches in the next project is increased). Imho this technological advancement needs a further advancement 🤣 I love my ovation but I hardly ever chain off (and I didn't get the gloria because I didn't notice any improvement on the stitch quality ) you're lucky because you have all new models much faster - so you're going to have the babylock top and bottom coverstitch first 😁 we'll probably have to wait a year 😳😳😳 or longer....and they will be more expensive here 🤣🤣🤣
Great tutorial. I am having so much trouble with my Juki 1500. I am using 2 needles, it starts off skipping stitches, then it moves into perfect stitches and then suddenly the left needle stops forming stitch lines and the underside is now a single line of coverstitch. Any idea why it is doing this?

I'm going to make a video about how I hem in the round - I just need to work out the best angle (for both machines) and where to put my lights 😉 It was quite tricky to record it so that you can see anything 😉 But I hope there's going to be a video on how to hem (without trimming anything and with a neat finish) x

Great Video! I have a Juki 1500 when I start out my stitch lines are never parallel. What am I doing wrong?
Make sure you start with fabric under your foot,every needle should go into the fabric from the first stitch. It is sometimes easier to use the hand wheel to make sure the needles go precisely where you want them, then lower the foot and coverstitch. I'm not entirely sure what your beginning stitches look like, but if the outer needle (usually the left one) produces a 'wonky' stitch it might actually be due to the wrong fabric/settings. Coverstitch needles like the same amount of fabric, even though Juki has a foot that compensates quite a lot, so I've never actually had this problem. Of course, as always , check if it's threaded properly and use the right needles for the project (90/14 for anything thicker than 220gsm). Remember that the presser foot pressure knob needs to be set on at least medium (or high) for thicker fabric (unlike most regular sewing machines) Stitches not being parallel could mean that one needle tension is set too high and the thread is pulling on the needle- though it would happen for longer than just a few stitches (and the needle would break after a while)

I have a Bernina and to release the pressure you must turn the handwheel away from you. Feels so wrong
Like in an industrial 😉 I always check (I have quite a few machines, 3 of them industrial so I can get really confused sometimes 😁)
