The beam saber would be perfect for boarding ships: a mobile suit approaches the ship disabling its defenses, cuts an opening in the hull with the beam saber, and then a transport shuttle full of marines approaches the opening and boards the ship, capturing it. And if you feel particularly daring you could put the marines inside a container backpack similar to the one used by the ground gundam, so the whole operation can be accomplished with just one mobile suit. And if you feel exceptionally crazy you can also forget about the marines, if the mobile suit pilot is a newtype, and if newtypes are just as good at fighting on foot as they are at piloting mobile suits, then it could be doable.
This was already demonstrated in _Gundam: Thunderbolt,_ when the feds raided that last area where surviving Zeon troops were hiding. The only caveat to this feat, is that you have the intelligence gathered or your spy from the inside to guide you to the specific spot to ram the beam saber down, as demonstrated in _Thunderbolt._
IBO is the only gundam that doesn't have beam sabers or beam weapons period, other than the rare mobile armors from their ancient past, and even back then the original gundam frames were never equipped with any beam weapons but I'd like to imagine before the 72 frames and the invention of nanolaminate armor they had mobile suits that used beam weapons, ships that used beam weapons, and beam related weapons and I like to imagine what they might have looked like.
I think pre-nano smtg smtg coating era in IBO would also be dominated by beam weapons. When Hashmal used its beam cannan, the coating was really put to its test. We know that it repels beams, but prolong exposure still heated up the part significantly. If Hashmal didn't stop the beam atk i think it would have actually melted through the ms. Meanwhile, the repelled beams fking obliterated the town behind the ms, showing that beam technology at its peak during the calamity war were most like just as effective as beams portrayed in other gundam universes. With that in mind, I think calling barbatos immune to beam weapons is likely untrue. Sure, a normal beam rifle will likely just bounce off, but a strong beam melee, or a super powered beam atk (beam magnum, hyper mega bazooka launcher or, if need be, the colony laser) might just do the trick.
Gundam did more with the light/beam sabers concept than Star Wars ever did. Gundam is the superior franchise period. Other than that a great video keep up the great work👍 And greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱
Pretty much the beam saber is one of the most iconic weapon in anime history it is like a swift Army knife you could use it as a throwing weapon as seen with the Exia or a extra beam rifle with the ZZ Gundam and if we’re talking about a double ended beam saber that goes to the freedom & justice Gundam and the Jagd Doga and it’s beam saber/small heat knife and more it is a amazing weapon so you can’t not have a gundam or Mass production mobile suit without the beam saber. And in the 80th MS Team a beam saber was used to make a hot tub awesome.
My favorite has to be the Phantom's Flame Saber, rather than the standard I-Field, it uses a special suped up version that's meant to funnel the Phantom's imperfect Minovsky Drive. Because of the I-field's strength, it can actually rip apart and disrupt the beams of the enemy. Which is extra useful in late UC where beam shields are super common. Honorable mention to the Striker Custom's beam katanas and beam tonfas
With UC; Crossbone X-0 has Butterfly Buster and Butterfly Buster B, Dictus's finger nails in hand mode can become beam sabers, Haze'nthley 2 Rah has a long beam rifle that can also be used as a shield and a beam saber, Dijeh and Rick Dijeh have the beam naginata, and the cool looking Rig Shokew has beam string emitters, beam fan, and beam rotor. With AU; there's Deathscythe's shield being launchable with a built in beam saber, beam boomerangs in Cosmic Era, the original Lfrith has a receiver gun that can also become a beam blade, the double ended beam sabers of Freedom and Strike Freedom, Shining Gundam later on demonstrates the Shining Finger Sword, Age 2 Magnum has the Shiguru Shield which also acts as a beam saber, and xvx-ooo Gurdolin has the beam drill that can also be used to fire projectiles.
Late to this by a while but I found an interesting fan interpretation of beam sabers in of all things a crossover story with a web novel. In it the beam saber doubles as a grenade by what I’m assuming is having it fire all its stored energy at once and using an I-field to seal the usual business end to make sure you don’t just make a really impressive beam for a split second. Useful for thoroughly annihilating specific things as without the I-field the blast dissipates real quick but even at the scale of being wielded not by an MS but by a person it can destroy small buildings with ease. So, beam grenade!
its a cool idea that could maybe work, in gundam thunderbolt lo tossed a beam saber that got shot by the enemies and made a makeshift flash bang I do like that idea of a beam saber being used as a improvised explosive, plenty of them have been tossed around and the zeta and impulse have thrown them to bounce shots off
@@slothcakes Since I brought it up I might as well give the name. Trailblazer. Crossover with Worm of all things. Pretty well written though and harkens back to the early concept art of Gundam when Mobile Suits were more power armor than mecha.
I read sonewhere that these sabers have a compact i-field generator, but probably the power is distributed from the MS hands like a USB connection. The i-field envelops the plasma, and the field disregards the high temperature thus creating a controlled funnel of plasma but did not sacrifice the heat. The plasma gas can run out though, as demonstrated in _Gundam: Thunderbolt._
The aqua gm saber handle has to come in contact with something to deploy the saber, while the nu gundam has an "invisible blade" which is just the I fields deployed without the minosky particals. when it detects something close to the I field, it deploys the saber. The aqua gm has to get much more close and can't turn it off while the nu does this to conserve power and has much more range.
@@slothcakes Even then I wouldn't call it stupid, it's an efficient solution for being underwater and likely not having that much time to do research into better options. Also, I'm pretty sure the ones in CCA aren't invisible, but instead they only properly generate at the point of impact. Everything I find online says that anyway.
This was a nice video. I would had rambled for hours about Newtype enhanced Beam Saber attacks, but since the video was supposed to be an introduction, I think the topics you covered where perfectly good and the most useful. 👍 Just a small heads up: the footage of the RX-78-02 is from SRW 30, not T. 😅
Thanks, there's so much i want to cover and talk about, but breaking it up in sections seems the most digestible. Thanks for the correction. While SRW makes great b-roll, there are so many of them it can get confusing lol
I find it funny that no gundam timeline has just used the Star Wars explanation of their blades being just streams of plasma contained in a magnetic field, 😂😂😂

I mean that’s just false, tell me there’s zero beams in that show.
I know it’s very few, but you can’t
Beam sabers may be strong but my iron nails are stronger!
Heathen!, we all know that heat weapons are the best!

You can line a big zoggin' sword with beam sabers or make a big axe outta them

a romantic hot tub, at that

I never knew how the beam sabers worked until now. I feel so enlightened, thank you.
so manny coll SD and cross gundam games we never got
How is the Aqua GM's Beam Saber dumb?
It's basically what they use in CCA and I doubt Amuro and Char would be using that if it was stupid.

Technically it should be called "Mega Particle Beam Cutter"
The steamge thing is Beam rifle shots are Megaparticles which are explicitly not plasma, while beamsabers are explicitly plasma.
