you could keep filming yourself pruning the same tree every year and put all of the videos for each individual tree in a separate playlist on your channel. In a couple years people could watch those playlists like a timelapse and really get a feeling for the impact your decisions have.
Great idea! We're working on followup prunings. Thanks. Below is a link to several dozen more fruit tree care videos. Scroll down to the section called: “Getting Started with Fruit Trees Organically”:

Perfect. Short, to the point, reasoning explained. This is an excellent resource and exactly what I needed with my recently planted 2 year trees.

amazing videos a lot of work to show us how it can be done! thanks
Glad you liked it!
Amazing, very informatic and condensed right to the point. I would love to see more on stone fruits and figs.
Time for me to correct my previous mistakes :). Thank you for the great public service UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology.
Glad the video was helpful. Below are a couple of additional pruning videos by Orin, winter and summer. In general, pruning during winter dormancy (leaves have dropped off) will stimulate vegetative growth. Late summer pruning will retard growth and stimulate the production of fruit buds and fruiting laterals. The summer pruning video tells you how to determine that the timing is correct for summer pruning.

@@ucscagroecology thanks, i watched it I got home , very interesting.
Please add third year pruning for that same tree
Fantastic video. I've got 18 cider apple trees that went in last fall and i'm planning to do an open center form. Beautiful and seems to be better for harvesting.
Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge. Love your videos and have ordered your book. Oh how I wish you could sit on my shoulder while I prune. Best wishes from South Gippsland, Kim.

Thank you for the great tips! As far as timing of this pruning vs the last video: the first video was delayed dormant, is this video now winter about 10 months later? So no summer pruning on this first year tree? Thank you again!
que lindo ver a un viejo que sabe tanto

Hi, Thanks for these vids- this gives me a great starting point. I just planted five apples NY zone 6b. How long after I plant can I/ should I prune?
will there be a part 3?
Excellent video! I'm going to be growing Apple trees in large pots to keep very small (about 6-8ft with about a 4 ft wide or less canopy) and want to learn how to prune to get maximum fruit on as small of a tree as possible is as short time as possible. Do you have any videos for this? Thanks
Glad the video was helpful. Probably a good way to get the most fruit as soon as possible is to buy trees that are already close to your desired size. Since we have 35 acres of land at the farm and hundreds of trees, we haven't explored pruning to get the most fruit as fast as possible out very small trees. A search on "growing apple trees in a container" returns lots of videos and other information on growing apple trees in containers. We'll defer to those other resources. May you and your trees prosper!
will we be getting a new video of this guy anytime soon?
We don't have any further videos of this tree. There are several new videos of Orin talking about fruit tree topics. Check them out in the "fruit tree playlist". ua-cam.com/play/PLdNOdHei9NV0QjOJDbUTx6wgD-qkiNGah.html

You are a wonderful clear teacher and plan to look for any books you have written. I live in Maine and I am wondering how you know when to choose open center or modified central leader?
Hi Michele - glad the video was helpful. Choosing between open center or a leader form is usually indicated by the shape of a new tree when you plant it. The open center is a little easier to establish for a new orchardist. Below is a link to several dozen more fruit tree care videos. In those videos you will find several examples of Orin assessing a new tree and deciding how to form it. Scroll down to the section called: “Getting Started with Fruit Trees Organically”:

I have an young open centred tree about 3 or 4 years old. The centre most branch is notably more vigorous than any of the others (and 30% longer than the others). Last year I hadn't done any winter pruning and the apples on this branch tipped the tree right over. Any suggestion of how I should manage it with pruning this year?
Without looking at the tree, it's difficult to give good advice. But, from your description, the center has what's called "apical dominance" and is getting more resources than the rest of the branches, thus the more vigorous growth. If you prune that center branch to a height that is lower than the surround branches, this will "break" the apical dominance and resources will flow more evenly amongst the branches of the trees. Best of luck with you trees!
I love this video. Thanks so much
great video - did you use a green-screen behind the tree for this?
Glad it was helpful! Yes, on the background screen, but we use a blue color instead of green. If you use the usual green-screen, any green on the tree disappears. As you probably surmised, we use the blue-screen to isolate the tree from the background. Without the screen, the subject tree gets lost in all of the trees behind it.
@@ucscagroecology wow, it’s a brilliant idea and so very helpful! thank you for the video!
Is it okay to cut tree in July?
when (what time of year) was this video made?
February. On the central coast of Calif which has a Mediterranean climate.
When to do prunning first time
My plant is four months old and it is moving up vigorously
Great content
Thanks! We'll have lots more tree care videos coming over the next several months.
I can hear their silent scream ;) Should i consult with a psychologist before i prune my trees like this? :D or i risk to become a picasso of pruning trees into some artistic litany ? :)
Nice
