She was a saint! She gave her life to Tony on a silver platter.
I never understood why they spent an astronomical amount of money back then to digitally render Livia for her last scene when it never looked realistic to begin with. It completely breaks the immersion. Her passing would have had more impact if that scene never existed and the first we hear of her this season is when Carmella tells him.
I choose the believe that Livia was already dead at that point and Tony was speaking with her ghost. Maybe that explains why she only repeats lines she said to Tony before, why she looks out of place, why she looks younger, the weird lighting and her constantly changing hair. Did anyone check if the scene took place at 3 o'clock? Anyway, $4 a pound
I think others have mentioned it but at 20:20 is one of my favorite moments of the show. It’s very subtle but if you look closely at the mirror you might see a familiar face…..
I remember the first time watching this episode, I found it hard to watch as well. But on second watch and later, you notice some tiny details which transform this episode from tragedy to a complete joke, like the guy going back upstairs, the constant drinking in the background, Chrissy’s high rant, etc. Apparently, this was completely intentional. Nancy Marchand (Livia) was nothing like her character, and filled the room with joy. After her passing, they devised the scene with the music and memoires and so on because they believed Nancy would love it and laugh really hard at it. The actors had a hard time getting through the scene, not because it’s so dark and depressing, but because no one could keep a straight face. They had to do Chrissy’s mumbo jumbo several times and you can even see Ade hiding a smile behind her hand when Livia’s ‘favorite’ song is being played 😆 The Sopranos is the perfect mix between seriousness and comedy and I’m all here for it. Great reaction as always!
20:22 ghost at a funeral.... 👻 Livia is not the only one haunting Tony. Its hard to see in the edit but if you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/7CJLDERGmDw/v-deo.html
20:40 I cant say I was expecting Livia's favourite song to be 'Up 'N Da Club' by '2nd II None feat. AMG and D.J. Quik', but you got to respect her wishes.
Tony just standing there at the wake and taking it in because he knows it’s true is heartbreaking. No one could offer a rebuttal because they all knew how controlling and manipulating Livia was.
I agree a character like Livia could only have been written if you know someone like that. Imagine my shock when I first saw the Sopranos and realized that was my own grandmother on screen. Every little detail, the manipulation, the joy in making others suffer, the fact that nothing exists but her hatred. Years later I ended up telling my father "You know, your mother's kinda Livia Soprano". My father looked at me very seriously and quietly said "She IS Livia Soprano". She died a few weeks ago and even at her funeral people were joking about her complete lack of empathy. What a contrast to my beloved grandfather's funeral a few years back.
That Christopher speech lives rent-free in my head, lol Also, iirc, on the Sopranos podcasts, they mentioned that upon playing the song at Livia's wake, the actors all burst out in laughter
I think what irritates me the most about Livia’s bad CGI scene is that when I was watching the show as it came out in real time, I totally missed it, but these two young ladies spotted it and they spotted it immediately. Now I can’t stop scratching this rash on my forearm.😎
Chris'... "eulogy" will never not make me die laughing. And oh Lola, this episode more than likely hit you hard for the same reason it did me when i first saw it... is your mother a lot like Livia Soprano? Cause mine sure as hell is. Tony watching a movie which depicts a loving mother is giving him sad feeling of never feeling that himself, and now he never will. Even if she made him miserable... there was always "hope" she'd change; now theres none of that. Something i myself have had to accept for if/when the time comes, sadly. Just like Lola said in the episode review
Milena always has smart takes. She interprets things very differently than I do and hearing a different opinion about these shows sometimes alters mine.
Shoutout to the actress who played Liv, Nancy Marchand. She was absolute comedic gold as the straight woman in one of my all time favorite movies, The Naked Gun. "You killed five actors! Good ones!"
It didn't look great then either. It didn't help that everyone knew Nancy Marchand had passed away before they could have shot that scene. But also I had rewatched the first two seasons a bunch and could tell they lifted shots of her face and lines she spoke from earlier scenes.
@@jmwild1 Of course it didn't! It was late 90s TV. The bar was as low as possible. This never happened. People were simply written off the show when they died.
About 20 years ago I went through the same thing that Tony went through minus the passing out. Once I settle that issue, I had to call in a painting crew that I do business with to patch the holes in my wall and repaint the living room.😎
this is my favorite season of the show, so many great episodes. They really managed to represent the mourning for a relative you did not like in this one
Just to answer your question… Yes, the actress for Livia did pass away by the time this episode aired so they had to do their best to render her digitally
The most important scene was Meadow explaining the poem to AJ. Explaining that white also means death in literature. A very important lesson going forward.
My dad died a few months ago. He wanted a small service, because he never wanted to see the people he loved suffer. There were dozens of people anyway, telling stories and laughing, and very sad, because he was a positive person in many lives. Olivia's funeral is so opposite of that! One of her few qualities was being self-aware enough to know better. The actress who played her was a different as anyone could be from their character! She was well known for playing upper class, educated and 'old money' rich women. Before this, in the 70's she played the wealthy owner and publisher of a large city newspaper, with connections to politicians and high society!
There is a great documentary about the show/david chase that released recently, where David Chase says he believed his mom was sexually abused by his grandad, and he made remarks about ti before. Puts a new darker perspective on the Livia character, who is heavily based on his mom.
Nancy Marchand the great actress passed away back then and they tried to have that scene with a digital composition which does not hold up but I think it works in the context of the episode as a final discussion between Tony and his mother. Yes, Janice has a son that has no connection to her anymore. Great episode overall as a lesson about regrets and grief
The whole scene of everybody gathered in the family room just struggling to get through that whole thing because Janice just has to be the fucking center of attention. I mean, are you here is she was a proud Newarker, she said what was on her mind, and at least she didn’t suffer. Thank God Carmella finally breaks the awkwardness and finally says what we’re all thinking that this is a crock of fucking shit. And livia didn’t even want this She didn’t want a funeral. And you can tell nobody wants to be there. They’re just there by obligation because it was Tony’s mother and he’s the boss, and they all have to kiss his ass.
On my first watch by this season, this was already my favorite show, but after this episode and listening to Chris during Livias wake I decided it was also the funniest.
Dont ever be afraid to follow the dark comedy rabbit hole with this show. If you're not sure if something dark is supposed to be funny, 90% chance it is. David Chase loves himself some DARK humor.
The Livia actress Nancy Marchand (who was actually good humored and beloved by the cast) did indeed die and they had to piece together that scene as you noticed. There is a documentary about Gandolfini after he died that shows how they enjoyed each other on set. Worth a watch on your own after you finish the series.
Slavic languages are similar enough if you talk slow you can pick up the gist of the conversation. For instance, I know in Serbia if you need an ambulance, simply walk up to someone and say jedi govna and boom ambulance on its way
they were inspired by CGI effect used with Oliver Reed in Ridley Scott's Gladiador, it cost about $250,000 and took two weeks to put together previous footage of Nancy Marchand on a body double! too bad her hair and the lights don't match the scene... it's a great tribute of a final act though! rest in peace Nancy Marchand and as for Livia Soprano, who's sorry now...who's sorry now...
It looks so bad and they re-used her old lines which they immediately noticed. She didn't need to be in one last scene. Should have just seen Carmella and the kids tell Tony she had died.
So what made Tony pass out... the rice or the meat?? Melfi thinks it’s the meat. Is she right?? Seems more like it was the rice that triggered it to me.
