How to Make CAKE POPS | Homemade Red Velvet Cake Pops Tutorial and Recipe

- Since Valentines is right around the corner, I wanted to share how to make Red Velvet Cake Pops. Cake pops are pretty labor intensive however the results are absolutely fabulous. I went the easy way and made my cake from store bought cake mix but I'll get into that later and I decorated them differently. So you can really play these up as much as you like. The outside of these cake pops are hard from the chocolate candy coating and the interior is moist and taste like Red Velvet cake. These cake pops are not at all hard to make but they will require a bit of time so just follow my tips to get the most perfect Red Velvet Cake Pops!

Red Velvet Cake Pop
For the Cake
1 box Red Velvet Box (15.25 oz) plus the ingredients needed on the back of the box
2 tablespoons Cream Cheese Frosting
The Candy Coating
1 12-ounce bag of White Wilton Candy Melts
1 12-ounce bag of Red Wilton Candy Melts
3 teaspoons flavorless oil (1 ½ teaspoon for each batch of candy melts )
Sprinkles (optional)
Extra Items Needed
Cake Pop Sticks (I bought mine from Hobby Lobby)
1 ½ Tablespoon Ice Cream Scoop/Cookie Scoop
Styrofoam (I bought mine from Hobby Lobby)
Prepare and bake the cake according to the package instructions and let it cool down to room temperature (I covered mine with plastic wrap and allowed to cool in the refrigerate overnight).
Cut out the edges and remove the cake from the baking dish and add to a large mixing bowl. Crumble the cake with your hands. Add 2 tbsp of frosting to the crumbled cake and mix with a spoon or your hands.
Scoop cake with ice cream scoop/ cookie scoop and press cake into hand and then roll the cake ball with the palm of your hands to smooth any imperfections. Place formed balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
In a heat safe bowl, melt about 1/4 cup of white candy melts in a microwave. Heat in 30 second intervals to avoid overheating the candy (you can also do this with a double boiler as I have in the video).
Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into the melted candy and poke it into to ball about halfway through. Place each cake pop onto a baking sheet and transfer to the freezer for 20 minutes don’t go over.
Meanwhile, melt the rest of the candy in a bowl. Make sure you melt them in 30 second intervals with mixing in between (again you can use the double boiler method if you don’t own a microwave). Add the coconut oil to the melts and mix well. If you are using the red candy melts, melt those separately and add the oil into those as well.
Once the cake pops have been in the freezer for 20 minutes (no longer!), dip each into the cup and tilt to the sides slowly to make sure the entire cake pop is covered. Then slowly pull up the cake pop, do not swirl (they will pop off), hold the cake pop in one hand and tap your wrist so that all the extra melted candy drips off.
Sprinkle the cake pop right away so that the sprinkles stick to it before the candy hardens and place the stick part inside the styrofoam and allow the candy to harden. Enjoy!

Happy Monday, Lydia! Hope that you are well. I absolutely love Red Velvet cake, and to see these made into cake pops gives them a whole new way of eating them. Very ingenious! Thanks for the upload my dear! Have a great rest of your week and be well. Thanks always for your channel and for your great content.
Happy Monday Ed, hope you had a great weekend! Score, so glad I was able to make something you like into a cake pop! 😁 Red velvet is absolutely delicious 😆 Thanks for the encouragement, be well and have a blessed week!
I tried this recipe and it was sooo delicious. I'm glad that i found your channel!💓

Hey Guirguis!!! Hope you are doing well 😀 These cake pops were definitely delicious!
@@LydiaApril yes my dear that is right -- greetings
Wahh nice,next i make it
🙌💗
I'm not grossed out by your wedding ring, if you wanna wear it I fully suport it. I'm just sitting here thinking about how your gonna get the cake bits and icing out of the little crevices on that ring. I'm just the kinda person that takes off everything that's on my hands. But you do you.
W🤍❤W!!!! That was great!!!! So down to earth and unpretentious. 1,000% transparent and relatable. Completely disarming the self-critical, easily intimidated 👨🏿🦯chefs around the kitchen of our insecurities. Almost as lovely as the 💍 dipped in velvet.
Hell yea red dye gives me stomach cramps. I like big red the drink but if I drink it I get the cramps lol
😊😊😊🙏🙏
Hey Adonay! 😁
If you don't like it don't watch the video.. How about take another 5 minutes with that little rant lololol
😂😂
Who cares about your ring we aren’t eating your cake
You'd be surprised at how many people came after me on my other video because I wore it and left some pretty mean comments but I couldn't agree with you more 😁
I think I will try these!! They look great! I’m with you on the red dye 😣😣
We also don’t own a microwave 😀
Hey Brianna! Oh my gosh, red food dye makes me so nervous, along with any other food dye. Most people don't know that they are so bad. I try to stay away butttttt Red Velvet Cake Pops have been on my list for so long now lol.
Ooo yes! I'm not alone in not owning a microwave!!! 😆💜
Lydia April I pitched our microwave last year while i was pregnant and haven’t looked back!!! I looked for red velvet cake mix today but the store i went to didnt carry it so ill have to wait to try these!
What?! You don't own a microwave?!
Your guys make my day 😀 and I like Red Velvet Cake Pops to and have a great day Lydia ❤️
Thanks LightningFNC! Hope you guys have a fun trip tomorrow, be safe and eat tons of good foods! 😁💙
Lydia April Thank you Lydia ❤️😀
I love the happy mistake you made! I clicked on this video to see how you did that design.
Thanks Lisa! Glad to hear that you love the marble look as well, I can't wait to make more cake pops with it 😊💕
I love your little tips throughout the entire video for making the cake pops come out better (using precise frosting amounts in the cake, squeezing the cake balls when you shape them, twirling the pops in the melted chocolate, tapping on your wrist instead of the glass, not putting in the freezer). You even explained why these tips are important. So helpful! I've been wanting to make these but I always like to "study" recipes before I make things and your two cake pop videos helped a lot!! :). Cant wait to try your tips.
Thank you Amna! I'm glad to hear that all the tips helped out, cake pops can be a bit of work however they are worth the effort 😊💗💗
@@LydiaApril I tried making them! And it was an utter disaster lol :( They kept falling off the stick and into the melted candy :(. Almost every pop did this except like 2-3. It's my fault though because I didn't put in the freezer before dipping, that was the only rule I didn't follow. I didn't realize it was so important haha! I'll try again in a few months and actually follow all your steps, I can't emotionally handle doing it all again right now lol 😂
Yum cake pops had some but they were dried but there's so many options ehat to flavor it with.
Ooo dried cake pops don't sound promising but some people do like theirs on the dry side 🤷♀️ I agree, I'm already thinking of different flavors 😆
I tried to make cake pops for our daughter 1st birthday and it was failed haha need to try it again now with your tutorial :)
Aww sorry to hear about that! Hope they turn out perfectly next time! 💜
Love your comments about using your hands and wearing your ring! Some folks.. lol if you don’t like it, don’t eat it 🤣😂😂😂
I really don’t like making red velvet cake pops! But looks good.
Thanks for sharing
I have a baby shower and thank you for the recipe I am having for babies and 40 babies in the cake recipe is going to help for baby showers in a month of February and is going to help me heal so thank you for your K-pop recipe
Whoa...you have another cake pop vid?! And wouldn't you know it, my wife loves red velvet! I'm definitely going to do this one next. Another great video, it got me to subscribed. Ignore all those haters, you're better than them. 😉
Thank you, yes cake pops are pretty neat
you are the best love your vid and i am a person who loves to bake
Thanks for the support Marie, baking really is fun! 💗💗💗
These look like such a fun thing to make with my niece :)
Oh my gosh, she'd love them! 😁
I wonder if you used the bright white candy melts if the red would still peek through. They have both a white and a bright white. I am about to attempt some cake pop fishing bobbers and I am worried about the red peeking through the white
Lydia and the chocolate factory 🏭 🧁
I love it Maria! 😁💗🍫
Awesome marbling. How much coconut oil do I use. I was thinking to add some white chocolate to the candy melts because they keep cracking when it dries out . Would that work?
Thank you, I like to add 1 1/2 teaspoon of flavorless oil to each 12 oz bag of candy melts. One reason they might be cracking could be that the cake pops are too cold/frozen when dipping them into the hot candy melts. I'm not sure how the white chocolate would work, but you can give it a try 😊💗
I'm new to your channel 😁 I spend a lot of time watching your vids and they were totally worth it 😊 your channel is amazing keep going 🤗😁😁
Thank you so much for your comment, it made my day! Glad you joined! 🙌😁
Having fun making quarantine cake pops 😊😊
They are! Hope you are staying safe! 💖
Who would hate on your Ring?! it is lovely! 👌
Thanks Addy, I guess they think it's gross but it's only my husband and I that eat the food that's made lol. I ended up taking it off when filming now 🤷🏻♀️
Ce dulce esti ! Ca si cake popsurile ! 😋pot sa fac comanda ? ❤️🥰❤️🤗
Aww mulțumesc! 😊 You're too sweet!!! 💜💗💜💗
The red crystals weren’t a bad idea kinda like a bit of cake crumbles on the outside I love it!!
Thank you for the video I am for sure going to try this, girl you go ahead n keep your ring on
Aww thanks! Means a lot 😊😊I wish I had more comments like this, I got a lot of hate on my other video for it lol.
Omggg you are a life saver. I’m doing the five sense birthday gift for my boyfriend . For taste of course I’m making cake pops. You have explained everything pretty well. Thank you!! I do have a question after making them should i place them in the
Refrigerator or room temperature
I would leave them at room temperature as long as it's not super hot where you live ❤
i like how you reply to everyone thats so sweet 💞
Thanks Adyson! I try 😊💗💗💗
Jep
If I left my cake pops in the freezer for 10 minutes and the chocolate will crack 😒
Try the refrigerator instead 🙂
To mix with the candy melts do you use coconut oil?
Thanks for sharing this fun recipe. These are going to be a hit with our kids.
Rob
Kids love cake pops, although I can think of one that didn't lol
Yeah, we don't have a dishwasher or a microwave like I hate when there's these really cool recipes but I need a microwave to do it -_-
I know, I miss all those minute cookies and mug cakes all the time as well! 😞
red velvet cake is just chocolate cake with red dye
That is correct! ☺
How early can i make these for them to still taste really good. Can i make them like a day ahead? Would i just leave them at room temp?
Hey Viorica, yes you can make them a day ahead no problem. Just leave them at room temperature, don't keep them in the fridge 😊
Red candy melts have a slight bitter taste.
I have seen some people using apple sauce instead of oil that the box asks for because they say the cake pops ooze oil out, have you experienced this?
Hi Lucy, being completely honest with you, out of all the times I've made cake pops I've never had that problem until I made these Red Velvet Cake Pops. A couple of mine did ooze out and I wasn't sure why, so you just answered my question. Thank you! 😊
@@LydiaApril my pleasure 😊
@@lusineroy 💜💜💜
I loved that you made a mistake with the red and white swirl. They were my favorite looks.
Thank you, they are my favor mistake as well 😊❤
Isso deve ser mais doce do que um doce. 🇧🇷❤️🇧🇷
They are pretty sweet! 😁
@@LydiaAprilyes, fine.
I only ten but I can bake and I will make sure to makes those cake pops
That is awesome! Have fun 😁
I love this video thank you. You gave me so much advice, and I’m actually going to make some.❤
Love your videos!! So happy i found your channel. I tried these in the past and made the biggest mess of life. But you've inspired me to try again!!! Thanks!! 😍🙌🏻
Thank you for your sweet comment Carol! Hope that you have much success in making them! Happy Thanksgiving! ❤❤
@@LydiaApril I MADE THEM! Ugly but delicious 😂 i used milk chocolate in a double boiler with oil, but the milk chocolate still got thicker as i was coating them. It started off looking great, but got uglier as i went 😂
Aww glad they were delicious, sorry that the milk chocolate got harder. That does sometimes happen, you can try reheating it or it might be because the chocolate is too hot or water got in it.
Thanks u are awesome 💯
Great video thank you! I don’t understand the dislikes 🙄
Thanks girly! 💗💗 Lol I don't understand those either, oh well 😄
I did this but my candy melt was hard not creamy 😞
That can happen if they get heated too hot or if water somehow gets into them
Manhoooos , kuthi
Can you use popsicle sticks?
I've never personally tried them so I'm not sure if they would work. I'd recommend getting cake pop sticks 🙂
@@LydiaApril Ok Thanks!
Very awesome love your energy passion pouring out very nice cake pops!!
I think you did great with making the red sprinkles. They all look so pretty 😍
Thank you so much Erica! 🤗❤
I found you yesterday, and I’m following you now. I love that you include scriptures to your vids (very encouraging). I relate to a lot of your logic 😉 follower for life!
It’s funner to use your hands 😀
Haha I agree! 😁❤️
So elegant!
Thank you Sylvia 😁
Were did you by the cake pop sticks
You can get them from Walmart or Hobby Lobby 🙂
I love your videos! Your awesome
Thank you Mary! ❤
I am wanting to make some of these for my daughters b-day next eeek and for her baby shower in a couple months. Do u have any baby shower pop ideas How much oil do u use
I used 1 1/2 teaspoons of oil, the recipe is in the video description 🙂
Do you have to use candy melts
I recommend using them. Others have said that chocolate chips have worked from them.
Nice 👍🏾 Thanks 🤩
You're welcome!
if you don't have cream cheese or frosting, ice cream works amazingly! I just add ice cream till I get the desired consistency.
I've haven't tried that, might have to now 😁
Thank you they look awesome
Thank you! 💖
Love them they look amazing!!!
Thanks Zareefa! 💗
I love your vids so much keep doing it
Thank you, I will! ❤️😁
Ibrahim.......!❤️ ✨ 😍😘💖💓💕💗💞👌🌟💫⭐🎉🎁💜
do more cakepop vids
Absolutely! 😁
Yessssssasss thwanks
You're welcome Aniya!!!! 💖💖💖
Instead of the candy melts can we use chocolate chips??
I think you can! I haven't tried but others have said they have had success with chocolate chips 😁
Have you ever tried adding chocolate chips to the red velvet cake? Kinda like the bunt cakes from nothin bunt cake? I would love to see how it comes out
I didn't, thats a great idea! I'd add mini chocolate chips because the regular ones might be too big for cake pops.
@@LydiaApril i will definitely give it a try today! Thank you for your video ❤️ it really helped as I messed up a lot yesterday with the cake pops (made them too big for the sticks) lol
You're welcome! Hope you have much success with them today!!! ❤
Look great and delicious.
Hey Srijan!
@@LydiaApril hello lydia, u upload very nice content.
@@srijanchandrakar5982 thank you! 😁
@@LydiaApril 👌👌
If you use cream cheese do you use the same amount of frosting?
Yes 🙂
@@LydiaApril Also this is about a cake, so if you only have one 8 inch pan can you bake that first than bake the other one in the same pan??
Man, I always miss the video cause of school, I hate school cause I can’t be early to watch your video :(
Awww so sorry! School is good to get an education and it will pass quickly 😁❤
I’m actually trying this right now ! Thank you 💗💗
Aww yayyy! I hope they come out and you love them!!! 🤩🤩💗
Omg just realized we both live in Atlanta haha 😂
Oh my goodness! That is so neat, we just moved here a few years ago and love it 😁💖
I really liked how the last ones came out 👍
First time i hear that someone can have allergies to a red colorant 😯
You watch the whole thing! 😯 You surprise me lol
Yea those one were the best, wish I would have made those from the start lol.
Oh boy, unfortunately a lot of kids and even adults get seizures from food dye... I worked with kids ages 3-21 years ago and saw a "kid" have a seizure before my eyes after eating cupcakes with food dye in it, thankful the seizure weren't bad but they are still scary
@@LydiaApril I always watch all of the video 😉.
Damn, thank God I have no allergy to any type of food. 😁
@@AlexMartinez-dc4pe you're one of the lucky ones to not have any food allergies lol 😁
Now that's something really delicious....Lydia we admit you make the best recipes....It helps me a lot...Thank you soooo muchhhh :3💜
Aww thanks Yasi! You guys always inspire me to be more creative, thank YOU! 💜💜💜😊

Do all the candy melts taste the same? Even though they're different colors?
I think they do, although my husband thinks they taste slightly different lol. But they should be the same.
Not homemade if you use a box cake
