Eh it gives mixed feelings. Mental illness doesnt excuse abuse. Miki chose a forgiveness route and thats fine if it was best for her but since this is a real and sensitive its important to remember that mental illness doesnt make abuse okay and no one is obligated to forgive someone because theyre mentally ill. I have a hard time viewing her well due to her being abusive throughout the game and not seeing her get help or be better though. But basically yeah shes terrible from what we see and her mental illness doesnt change that.

Check out the game Re:Kinder, the concept of mental illnesses for the Japanese people in that stuff kinda supports the reality of how professionals and the common people dismiss those who has these issues.
I think having Miki's mother as a nurse who don't treat people with mental illnesses right is not as accurate na.
TLDR: Probably games like Re;Kinder and Paranoiac, were written in that time when mental illnesses is not so well known and handled well by the Japanese medical professionals and the common people.

Sometimes your own guilt and regret really does feel like a monster chasing you down day in and day out. It's always an uphill battle but it's also a battle you have to keep fighting every day just to surivive. Best wishes to anyone who is going through this battle. @@TakeFlightRaven TBH I don't know if she was Shizophrenic. Can you... just randomly get it? There were no indications she was mentally ill before her childs death (Aside from depression.) So I'm not sure if it was that? I believe that yes, she was having voices in her head, but that it was more likely a voice of Depression. Dealing with Chronic depression myself, I often misread things people say or do, or just mentally think to myself that people are thinking these things. While she says "Miki told me to die too" I don't think she outright meant... That Miki VERBALLY said it. Miki avoided her, and hid from her, thus giving her indications that to Miki, it'd be better off if she was dead. I could be wrong.

I feel like in the game, the aunt seemed to suffer verbal abuse from her sister growing up, probably resulting in some harsh mental health issues into her adulthood, which was worsened by the stillborn child. Then the main character suffers the aunt's suicide.
Both feel guilty for the death they are affected by I believe. At least in the good end, they all find some peace, and try to cope with their illnesses (Obviously aside from the aunt who is dead, but there's a possibility there is an aspect to it that kind of puts her to rest.)

I liked Miura's guilt over not helping Miki enough resulted in him seeing the "monster" & other bits of Miki's memories & the resolution of her relationship with her mother made this remake really solid. @Mister Boomer It's a 2001Japanese horror movie by Kiyoshi Kurosawa adapted from his novel about ghosts coming into reality via the internet. From IMDB: "After one of their friends commits suicide, strange things begin happening to a group of young Tokyo residents. One of them sees visions of his dead friend in the shadows on the wall, while another's computer keeps showing strange, ghostly images. Is their friend trying to contact them from beyond the grave, or is there something much more sinister going on?" _spooky_

This was certainly a good remake of the game, even a better remake than Mermaid Swamp's. I don't really remember the original have a lot of gore myself, but I do like how the story was re-presented here, both in the art, layout, and some of the additional scenes they added to help build the characters and their tragedies. I thought the added scene with Miura in the Bad End was a nice touch, it makes the ending a little creepier with the whole situation being a cycle. Kinda want to see a "What If?" spin-off game starring Miura that follows the bad end with Miki dying, where he goes through a similar situation and the player has to help him get pass it.
I know Paranoiac isn't part of the Strange Men series but I personally feel like it is, just because it shares a lot of traits as those games in the series. It kind of like, a spiritual prequel (for lack of a better term) to that series.

Damn, Miki is very patient with her mom. I understand parents that have their own issues can be verbally abusive while being salvagable in the inside but damn... is that laugh on the phone is real? Or is it the ghost's doing? Because she sounds so supportive seconds ago.
Her auntie hearing people saying she was a killer was definitely not real. Mr Miura had been her neighbour and he said that while she was known in the neighbourhood to act strange, they didn't hate her, so they couldn't be actually accusing her. And of course, tv news couldn't be making such fuss about someone's stillborn.
So as terrible as Miki's mom be and her hysteria, I couldn't believe her actually telling her daughter to off herself. It might be the ghost's trick just like what it did to her aunt.
Also, as much as the characters speculate the ghost to be part of mental illness, I'd like to think like Crooked Man series that both mental illness and the ghost are real. More precisely a demon that hunts people weak with guilt. I don't think it's all of her aunt doing, so actual demon must be affecting her and her ghost, because... Miki said she was found suicide not long after she promised that doll, I can't believe she would detoriate that fast on her own, especially since she displayed the doll well in that room, if she hated Miki after making the doll, she wouldn't put it in display so nicely. I wouldn't believe that she forgot that she loved her niece on her own.
It could be my own bias though. In any case I wouldn't have been that patient. Miki is amazing in that regard.

To continue my impression of this game that I contributed on the last video, I can say more definitively that the subtle alterations and expanded scenes seemed to effectively embellish the simple plot and characterizations of the original work. As another specific example, I recall there being some vagueness in the original surrounding Miki’s inability to remember her aunt and the experiences they shared, and though it may have been possible to speculate as to the rationale for this haze, which was solely pertinent at the game's culmination, no explicit or additional information was provided as to its source. This momentous instance of clarity after encountering the embroidered bear was better predicated in the remake, as Miki is shown to be struggling with these lapses in her memory and the general obfuscation of all remembrances of her aunt dissociated from her suicide. Miki, in a state of contemplation, seems to imply that the traumatic sight of her aunt and the consequential guilt were so deeply rutted into her fragile mind that forgetfulness became somewhat of a protective mechanism to dilute the vividness of that final, unbearable image of her beloved aunt. The lucidity she regains at the end subjects her to the overwhelming grief and regret she attempted to suppress, yet, the positive memories also return, and the honest admission of her self-imposed blame represents the first step towards properly addressing her mental tribulations.
Overall, these foundational scenes introduced intermittently throughout the game reveal further insight into Miki’s personality and difficulties as well as restructure the narrative framework to provide more logical set-ups, motivations, purpose, and significance for the events of later scenes. From a storytelling perspective, the writing quality has certainly improved and the tone is more consistent. I’m definitely glad to see Uri returning to improve their earlier pieces, which grants me the opportunity to experience and discuss them anew.

The monster being a hallucination is actually very possible. Common side effects for antidepressents include things like anxiety, insomnia, as well as blurred vision. Considering the monster appeared more frequently as time went on, it could have started as something being affected by the blurry vision side effect, along with the human minds tendency to look for familiar shapes in unfamiliar things, such as a blurry smudge looking like a person. Then adding the fact she stopped sleeping as much would add the natural hallucinations caused by sleep deprivation for more than 72 hours, or 3 days. All that, on top of Miki's depression and growingly panicked mindset, plus, as Miura put it, the "creepy atmosphere" of the house, its highly possible for this to be passed off as hallucinations

I think the ending with the whole ending with that remembering love thing is very powerful, we often dehumanize people when they hurt us, and it leads us to distance ourselves from them which only makes thing worse. Despite everything, my family is doing alright, and I hope to continue with that. Maybe it's because I'm exhausted and its midnight but god this slapped me right in the heart.

I remember I loved Paranoiac when I first watched your playthrough and I can distinctively remember how after the bad ending we didnt have any other information for example about how Shinji felt about her suicide (adding the fact I will ship them until I die) and well, Im actually sharing yur opinion about the new face of the monster which I believe it had been because: a) the change of the art of the models and everything else and b) well, with the kind of story Paranoiac is presenting I believe its more fitting the new monster over the old one, since the original it was quite good at bringing scares but it doesnt have the feel of the present one. In other words, the static form makes it more believable to be a ghost that could be created by the traumatic memories of Miki than a half corpse zombie that it was a bit too much. So I gladly welcome all those changes but the original Paranoiac will forever have a place in my memories.

The old version was very scary to me (since I'm just a person with poor heart) so everytime when the monster with zombie-face-like appeared on the screen, I just covered my eyes. At first when I saw the teaser of the new version, I like its design in the old version more, but after done watching this remake version, turns out that I also like the design of this version too. And what make me like about this version is, they made it less frightening (since the monster in the old version annoys me so much), they describe more carefuly about each character's feeling (especially about Miki's feeling), and the part in the bad ending, they showed us more about how Mr. Miura feels after seeing Miki's dead (and then Miki's soul followed him?). This remake made me feel so emotional. I like it~!!
But in my opinion, I like how Miki looks in the old version more (for Mr. Miura I will choose the remake version). And I love the way she smile in the old version.

I can't remember if the old one had the short character descriptions including what happened to them 2 years after the events, in the Good Ending, but I liked the fact the game told us, non the less. Overall, I think I like this version more.

  • @0bituary860

Overall, this remake definitely improved on the story elements of Paranoiac and I'm glad for that, since the original was very lacking in terms of story.
However I'm kind of disappointed that they took the horror down several notches. In my opinion, Paranoiac was probably Uri's scariest game. The jumpscares, the realistic flashing imagery, the sounds... They were all fairly jarring for an RPG Maker game. With this remake they pretty much scrapped the monster and the flashing imagery seems more... Tame? Scripted? It just doesn't deliver the same effect.
Overall I think it was a good remake, though. The adding of more story and character elements were definitely welcome.

i think if they add something to the climax when miki face to face with the ghost, like maybe the ghost slowly turning into saeki and then saeki says "thank you" then slowly fades away, would add more emotional drive to miki and to the player, rather than just miki suddenly fainted, what i kinda don't like is the "monster" design because it looks more like a ghost than a monster

I love Uri's work so much. You can tell she's knowledgeable about mental health, she really approaches it with sensitivity. I haven't played/seen the old version of this, but I really like this remake. The sideways talksprites are really unique and expressive, and I love all the subtle changes in them. The story touched me - the loop of guilt in the bad ending and the path to recovery in the good ending...
(On that note, shkjshk I suspected the mum might be a nurse, but? A nurse with that kind of attitude to mental health, really?)
Thanks for playing this, Manly! You're awesome as always.

the monster is both more fitting, but also significanlty less scary art wise. And the lower speed makes it less hecktic, but less frustrating.
Aside of that, a lot of issues were fixed.
Like the lenght of the well cave. Or the "why doesnt she just leave" question was adressed with the park scene. Which also helped with her feeling of helplessness from the police not taking her serious, and deepen the relationship she has with her neighbour.
POverall, it's definitely a big improvement over the original.
But I wished the monster was kept more gory, scary, then just a float-y shadow.
