I just finished my freshman year of art school and this video was so helpful! I've def realized that doing assignments for classes only takes you so far. You have to be creating outside of class aswell in order to actually develop your own style and skills.
I actually graduate high school in a week so this video is greatly appreciated! I've been so caught up in creating an online personality, I forgot this is my time to explore new interests before I choose a solid career path. I have a comic that I started last summer but couldn't work on it during the school year, and I'm so excited to start working on it after viewing this. Thanks so much for the inspiration and wise words!
I just graduated and I feel so lost i what I want to do. This video definitely helped me slow down and actually think about what it is I want to accomplish with my art. So much great advice, thank you!
Perfect timing! I'm going to college this fall and was slightly skeptical about going into graphic design but this video has helped build my confidence a lot! Thank you!
Do you actually like graphic design? So many of my college friends that went to school for graphic design because its what they felt was the most financially viable art degree pretty much all work in the service industry now because it turns out they actually hate doing graphic design.
@@tsdobbi I've been a self taught artist for about 3 years, and I really want to pursue my art career! I was just a little skeptical because people tell me that it isn't easy to make a profitable career out of art
I will be a sophomore this next school year, and when I was first starting out as a freshmen I started really thinking about my future and what I wanted to do. I feel as though this video will help a lot in the years to come. Thank you.
I get so unnecessarily excited when I get Jake Parker in my notifications. The video may not even target me but Jake parker videos are so informative and educational that I still really enjoy watching them
I've been a professional artist for close to 15 years now and I found Jed's advice to be invaluable! It was something I never quite heard before and made so much sense! It totally spoke to me now and where I am in my career. Thank you!!!
Thank you so so much for making this video. As an artist and a mom of high schooler all the advice resonate with me. They are super valuable life long wisdom!!
Some great artists in this video! Thanks Jake! Also: SVS Learn is a good starting point for artists of any age! I started getting serious about art "later in life" when I was about 25.
I've recently been getting back into it at 37. I always wanted to be a comic book artist, started college as an illustration major. Then I worried about the whole financial viability and switched to computer science. The thing that annoyed me was I wish I could go back in time and slap myself, when I switched careers I pretty much stopped doing art. It's annoying because when i started drawing again, I was so much better than I was at like 19 with little to no practice over the years and I just got mad at how good i would be now, had I not basically abandoned it over those years.
Hey Jake! I'm a 16 year old artist based in India and after watching this I can tell you that it was super helpful to get some insight on what to do for graduation now, I can put In the work and be ready for it in a couple o years!
I'm graduating next year and I really needed this video! They gave very good advices, I'll write them down and put it on my wall :) Thank you Jake for this video and thank you all. Congratulations Tate, I hope your art career will be just as you imagined :))
Thanks for the advice. As a design student, I find it really hard to do both personal stuff and school projects. With a better organisation and by seeing what bits of school projects I can integrate into my personal illustrations, I will hopefully find a balance... I lack self discipline though
It's been 12 years since I finished High School. I've volunteered socially for 1 year, conscripted for a desk job for 3, worked in a factory for 1, been in college for 5 and been outside for 2 and I feel I need all the advice I can get.
Thanks for always making these videos. They are very helpful and motivate me everyday. You have been the most helpful you tuber I’ve learned from. Keep up the excellent work.
Hey, I know it’s hard as a full time artist to create videos in between your schedule. But I think it would be good to see some how to videos. Ie: hands, anatomy, shape and form
i just listened to the podcast aswell and as a first year art student this stuff is suuuuper usefull! thanks so much for thinking for those at the beginning of their path!
Great idea for a vid. I wish someone had told me this when I was young. Luckily I have had the drive to practice on my own. Sage advice Mr. Parker & friends.
I'm in my 30s still trying to focus on art and make a carrier out of it, I find a lot of this stuff useful. When you listen to these advises you think to yourself: all of this stuff is obvious. But it still takes a lot of effort and discipline to implement.
Thank you for the video. I graduated in december of the last year, and I have too much to learn yet so sometimes I wonder if it was the right answer, specially because I'm studying by my own and live in a very small area, but I won't give up my dream.
5:19 The advice given just before this point about exploration. What if i havent discovered my artistic voice by the time i finish art school? Dont i need it for like, a career😭
Hey, a question for anyone with time and an answer. What is the pen/pencil to draw the frames for art? Like the red color pencil thingy. What are they called? Thanks for any responses
Hey bud, love your work. Pls can you do some more vids on draw and talk. I love to listen to you while see you actually draw. If you actually consider this comment I'll thank you a lot.
I'm not sure what you mean by "real" career, but... There is definitely something to be said about working whatever job pays the bills while you are growing your artistic interests. I was once told: "don't quit your day job until your dream job is already making as much money as your day job." In other words, treat your dream job like a second job while your other job pays the bills.

Even though i graduated high school 5 years ago these advice are golden! Can apply this anyone looking to seek their creative path!
Wish I had seen this video, graduated in 2019, but this advice is still helpful, thank you.
I've been a professional artist for close to 15 years now and I found Jed's advice to be invaluable! It was something I never quite heard before and made so much sense! It totally spoke to me now and where I am in my career. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this video Jake! This means so much! I was really thinking a lot about this!
Thanks so much, Jake! I'm graduating on June 7nth and this gave a lot of valuable info to me.

Thanks for this, Jake! It was great to meet you at ECCC this year!
Thank you for putting in the work to make this video, and ask these people these questions. Not everyone can make it to the conventions.

Step one: get a real career or you'll shorten the rest of your life in comic con
