I have many packing cubes (no surprise there) - even the compression bags - some are expensive & have very pretty pictures on them - but I actually like using the heavyweight plastic zippered cubes that linen sets come in (sheet sets, pillowcases, pillows, etc.)! They’re usually quite sturdy - and I can see what’s inside - clear plastic - so I can find what I need easily (and I get them for free when I buy linens)!
Great review. Who knew that packing cubes double as a home gym! 🏋️♂️ Initially, I wasn't convinced about the benefits of using packing cubes so I tried the idea out with leftover mesh bags from onions, potatoes and cirrus fruits. A very low budget option. They worked fine keeping my items organized during travel so I decided to invest in packing cubes after that. I am careful packing them but I do try squeezing as much as possible in each bag.
Great video Emma i use large zip lock bags cheap and cheerful and works or here in the UK supermarkets sell bags to put loose fruit/veg in and they are good and cheap.
Thank you for your video, very helpful, I'm sure it took you ages to put together. I loved the faces when you expected something to break, and I was quite concerned for your feet with the weight test, lol.
Hi Emma, no need for you to go to the gym, you already had your upper body workout. You looked like you were having way too much fun making this video. Happy New Year. Hi from Bob and Jill in Connecticut
Good one Emma I got some packing cubes from Target for $15 got three sizes and am going to use them for my clothes when I go on my land holiday this year in August to test them before I pack for my cruises next year
Fun video! I travel quite a bit, I own Amazon cubes but don't always use them...My tip, they're far more useful if use them for an entire outfit vs all one item like socks...
I use the Amazon brand and ebags. Thanks for showing the different types and qualities. I bought nylon shoe bags for packing and have had no problem. I like the see through mesh because I pack for both hubby and me and I just forget what color meant what . Thanks for sharing!! Happy New Year!
Never seen Emma as excited.. Myth Busters missed one team member here! 😂 Could I have that heel as a pizza knife? 🤔 You Emma should know that there are free weights onboard! No need to pack them. 😅 In seriousness.. More of these consumer tests needed! And.. Potato 🥔
Never really had the need for packing cubes, I use lots of recycled plastic backs for shoes etc. I think you needed danger money doing those tests.... Brave lady !!
I'm very happy with my Amazon Basics packing cubes. My set came in 4 different sizes. Always trying to avoid a situation my brother had where his bag was searched by airport security and his dirty laundry burst out all over the place 😆
Another great video, very informative. Warning, some packing cubes were harmed in this video, however, no potatoes were harmed. No potatoes were even used in making of this video. 🤣🤣
Nope not really, I'd say the amazon basics ones were probably the heaviest but just because the material was a bit thicker. They're all pretty light :)
4 things: 0) If you're not sold on the idea of packing bags, merely the convenience of being able to easily move your stuff around in your suitcase (or, let's be honest, realize you can't get away with the small suitcase and you need to switch to a larger one) makes them worthwhile. (In the latter scenario, you don't have to unpack and repack each item individually; you just take the cubes out of the one and put them in the other.) 1) If you're a larger person like me, leaning towards larger packing bags is a good idea. Our clothes are bigger and the sizes meant for smaller people just don't hold quite enough clothes. 2) Another way of packing with packing bags is to do 1 outfit per bag, then all you have to do is take that bag out that day, open it up, and there's your clothes already ready for you! 3) I definitely highly recommend, regardless of what brand you get, getting a few sets of various colors, as you can then color code your luggage (esp. if you can't see through to see what's inside of the cube.) I have 2 different colors of cubes & I've gone to cons where I have 2 different outfits per day (a casual one and a dress-up one or costume) and I like to put the casual clothes inside of one color of cube and the dress-up/costumes in another color. Works great! I've also put long-sleeved shirts and pants in one color, and short-sleeved shirts and shorts in another color.
I had to look up "what is the purpose of a packing cube", so I'm not their target market anyway. But the video was interesting. As to your little tiny bag that might hold a chocolate bar? Could be for currency. I took quite a simple trip to England once (I'm in Vancouver) and I needed separate wallets for British pounds and Euros as well as my Canadian money.
I ended up getting our packing cubes from IKEA ( strange place right lol ) and they are fantastic - not sure if they still have them as I got them on sale for $5 for a 4 piece set ... they are called IKEA UPPTACKA Travel Packing Bags, Packing Cubes, Set of 4 and I got mine in the Dark Blue and got 10 sets for me and the hubby and some friends lol They included a 1 small bag (10 x 6") 1 large bag (13 x 10") 1 large bag with two compartments (13 3/4 x 10") They were two sided and then a 1 shoe bag (17 x 9") and loved using the extra shoe bags for my hubby's rolled socks and great for his baseball caps
I also have the IKEA Upptackas (which have been discontinued). I got 2 sets of dark blue and 2 sets of pink like 8 years ago and I have definitely put them through the test. Some of the (internal) fabric has ripped/frayed in the 2 sided ones by trying to overstuff them (as a large person, my clothes take up more space, and therefore I can't put as much in each cube... but I try anyway, lol!), but they're still pretty much going strong. And while they have mesh, they also have plastic or something behind it so that you don't have that mesh problem. (Also, as Cathie mentioned above, there's one bag that's designed specifically for shoes.) I know they replaced the Upptackas with the Forfina packing cubes, but I think they may have even discontinued those as well.
It seemed to me that Emma tried to break some cubes harder than others. However, her final conclusions are probably true. One take away: don't pack stilettos. Another: don't pack heavy weights and sharp pieces of cruise ship. (A true item that some people might actually pack is pieces of shale or other flat pieces of rock with jagged edges. Wrap with paper and pack in small cube.) Key to packing well is packing tight so things don't move around. Small cubes are useful for jewelry, make up, toiletries, chargers, converters, etc. If you use packing cubes, it is easier to use suitcase's internal straps to keep everything tied down and immovable. You can even leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs and gifts. Mesh tops make it easier for hand inspection of your luggage when going through security.
Emma I hope you were wearing steel capped safety boots for this demonstration! BTW, I'm seeing an elevated pergola surrounded by tropical palms in that back corner of your yard lol.
You said at the end of the video what's nice about them--you can quickly unpack your luggage and add it to the dresser. I usually just live out of a suitcase unless it'll be a week or something. Thanks Emma! I'll have to get the tui cubes once I start traveling more!
I don't get the concept of packing cubes. They might make sense if at some point you need to take a sunset of what you've packed (like a backpack) but on a cruise, don't you just unpack and put away everything once you get to your cabin? They would seem to just take up space in your suitcase.
This was always my thoughts too, they do kinda squeeze things and it’s definitely easier to just empty into a draw as already kinda filters to what you need😂💕
Sorry but you were pretty forceful to break and rip things. For everyday travel I think most of them would work. Not sure how many of us carry weights around in our packing cubes. Silly
