    My father’s name was Andrew Jack Vollrath. They were the last Vollrath family to own the Vollrath company before it was sold. These canteens were very famous and in abundance in the Philippines 🇵🇭

      My canteen cup bore that name. I used it when I was a Grade 4 Boy Scout in 1972. Excellent make. Thank you Mr. Vollrath! Greetings from the Philippines. 🇵🇭

    A.G.M. later became known as Mirro, based in Manitowoc, WI, world leaders in the aluminum industry at the time (also inventors of the famous "Charlie Brown" aluminum Christmas tree). My grandmother worked there during ww2, maybe she had a hand on that canteen

    I have a canteen cover that I cannot ID. It look similar to the cover shown from 4 to 5 minutes with some variations. It has steel lift a dots for closure and a steel hook on the back strap secured with one horizontal stitching 2 inches wide and a second horizontal stitching 3 inches below allowing it to be carried by a pants belt. There is a closing vertical stitch centered just above the hook attachment 1 inch long. On the front of the cover there are five vertical single stitch lines one inch wide and the center stitch runs straight up from the bottom to the top. Stitches 2 and 4 run parallel and begin to come together about 1 inch from the top and join about 1/2 inch from the top. Stitches 1 and 5 are similar but join at the top. The cover has felt insulation and I can find no visible markings of any kind except for the owners name written in ink or a magic marker. It held a Vietnam era (65) green plastic canteen like I carried when I was there. I believe this is US military equipment. It came from a WW2 era footlocker containing a 1944 and 1945 canteen each with similar dated cups. The covers on these canteens are Vietnam era that I can ID. The locker held Marine wool shirts (size 2) also dated 1944 and 45 based on production dates on attached shirt labels and manufactures name. and other clothing (military) but no combat gear. The locker belonged to a M/Sgt USMC. Name and serial # are painted on the locker. Any thoughts about this cover and possible dates for it. Additionally I do not believe this cover has been modified but the belt strap throws me. Thanks for anything you can add.

    Hard to believe each soldier only carried 2 quarts at a time, enough for an 8-hour patrol tops.

      I have seen many Vietnam War photos of Marines and soldiers wearing two canteens, but in WWII water consumption was seeemingly taken lightly

    Why did they use a different metal for the canteen cup handles? I often see good canteen cups with very rusty or broken handles. Also, what is the purpose of the felt lining inside the canteen pouch?

      Insulation, my boy. In winter weather, it would help keep your water from freezing. In hot weather, a soldier would soak that canteen carrier and insulation to help keep the water cool, somewhat.

    Did my original comment disappear? : At the start of your video you show some flat pre-1910 canteens and imply the Army never used them again. I have an old flat canteen I inherited from my old Boy Scout troop. That troop had some modern 1950ish stuff but had also inherited a lot of WW1 army surplus from an old leader, so I have no idea of the canteen’s age. It’s one quart, labeled “A S Campbell Company, East Boston, Mass; Pure Aluminum Cello”.
    Several adverts on ebay for the similar canteens mention guesses of “Spanish American War” to later Army use, to modern Boy Scout issue.
    My question is, did the Army continue to use some of those flat canteens at least into the WW1 era?

    • @BobHudsonVideo
      @BobHudsonVideo  2 роки тому

      They stopped making the flat/ovid canteens about 8 years before the start of WWI: it could be the National Guard still used them, but the M-1910 canteen would have been well established as standard gear by 1917/18

    do the 1918 canteens have lead solder? Just bought one...

    • @matthewmeador9565
      @matthewmeador9565 4 роки тому

      No. Lead cannot be welded or soldered. All m1910s have either aluminum or steel welds. As long as you clean it out well, you’ll be perfectly fine to drink out of it.
