  • US canteens and covers are often inexpensive, overlooked pieces of gear that are purchased without thought. We take a look at these items and find there are a wide variation of types, materials and manufacturers. We also take a look at surprisingly rare oddities and how to avoid fakes in the field.

Deals are still out there. A few months ago I found a near mint enamel canteen and enamel cup with a 1943 cover for $37 online - not ebay ;) Then I found a reinforced cavalry mounted canteen, with the strap, a couple months ago on the same site for $22 bucks. Last week I got a genuine British made 1944 cover, but the canteen and cup were 'made in japan'. It was worth it for the Brit cover alone. Thanks for the great vid!

The mounted canteen cover was was not attached yo the cartridge belt. It was attached to the saddle with that snap and the extra webbing was use to secure the cover to the saddle bags. The closure straps of the saddle bags were put through the loops that were made by the extra webbing. This attachment prevented the canteen from flopping around.

@@TheWozWizard you are correct about the Calvary use of the extension, but I have also seen period photographs of these being used by paratroopers.

Belgium made replacement canteens for the US army in 1944 -1945. These are exact copies but marked by the Belgian manufacturer. These are extremely rare. After the war the Belgians used British uniforms (Belgian made copies)and equiptment but modified their British /Belgian made webbing and used the American style canteens, also modified other US webbing (entrenching shovels) to be attached to the British webbing. These canteens are slightly different marked by postwar date and Belgian manufacturer. The covers were closed by a different snap and not by a lift the dot snap. The caps are also a near copy but feels a bit lighter in weight. The cork seals were also replacable also the caps. I have seen ww2 made seals and caps, in original boxes. Although cork seals are also made replica mostly used by reenactors?
