    Convoy S8: Video Transcript
    General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
    • So I thought the S6 was a big deal… until I got the S8! This is as 'tactical' as you get with Convoy. Convoy was kind enough to send me free samples of the S8 for me to review it in this video. I own a ton of lights, and I keep coming back to this 18650 form factor. It's just so versatile. Extended runtime, increased output, and pocketable too. What more could you want? I set mine to 100% mode which turns it into a budget tactical light.
    • You basically get the light itself, clip, lanyard, and battery if you select that option.
    • Comparison with the S2+, S6.
    Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel and reflector
    • Neat design with tactical styling - the knurling has a square pattern, grippier than the S2+/S6, just over 12cm. Some cooling fins on the head. I like the included stainless steel clip - or that we get one at all! It's not deep carry, but you can fit a variety of other clips on it, unlike the S2+/S6.
    • LED - comes with a variety of options. The same reflector is found in the S6 - 2cm deep. Suited to throwy LEDs. The bezel has some cutouts - pointy around the edges but not sharp.
    UI - modes
    • 12 mode grouping.
    • Full press to turn on/off, half press to switch modes.
    Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
    • CCT, CRI, Ceiling bounce test
    Considerations
    • No onboard charging
    • It's a small host. Gets hot on 100% - I don't mind that as I will switch to a lower mode. You can also program it to remove 100% if you wish.
    • No momentary mode - I think that would be the cherry on the cake! I wonder if anyone else out there would like to see this included too? I can pass that on to Simon. The good news is you can set it to 100% grouping.
    Verdict
    I think Convoy's nailed it with the S8 - if you want a more tactical-looking version of the S6 with the crenulated bezel, grippier knurling, cooling fins, and clip, this is really the best value budget tactical light out there.

    Hi Darren Several years ago I was able to get what is the old version of S8 that has polished anodizing, and only 2 groups of mods, curiously this S8 does not support 18350 thread tube in the old version, it would be great if they supported it, I have changed its threads at least a couple sometimes, I have T2,S2+,S3 and S8 is my favorite.

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  2 місяці тому

      Nice so it was bare aluminium but polished up? Yes S8 and the S6 are my favs too. I'd like to see Convoy play with the reflector more to squeeze out extra candela.

    This is hands down the best affordable compact to always carry tactical light if you do some mods to it. First you wanna program it into mode11(turbo-med-strobe) or mode 12(turbo only) and de-activate the memory. Secondly you want to buy and install two things, 1) a forward clicky switch 2) a switchback. This will set you back at max 30$ including shipping which is an awesome deal for a pure tactical and compact light such as this. It ticks all the boxes except for a second quickly accesible edc mode.

      Good tips mate with the mode and forward switch. I haven't done that yet but it'd turn this into a proper tactical light. It outperforms many of my other lights that are 5X the price. Incredible value.

    I just got the S6 about two weeks ago. This is my first Convoy and I'm very impressed. I really love it as an EDC with the 18350 tube and a Thyrm low-profile carry clip. I love the amount of throw in such a small package, and the amount of spill is perfect for my applications. Does the S8 produce a noticeable difference in the amount of throw when placed side by side with the S6? Also, will the 18350 tube work on the S8? Thank you!

    Salut Darren , bonne vidéo comme toujours 👍
    Dit moi , la S8 , la S15 , et la S3 , est ce qu'elles sont démontables en 3 parties ? ( Head , tube , tail Switch )
    J'ai la mauvaise impression que la S8 est démontable uniquement en deux parties ?
    Merci à toi 🙏

    Hey Darren, I just bought a convoy s8 sft40 6500k . What battery would you recommend for this light?

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  2 місяці тому

      Hi Chris, most decent 18650s should do fine as this light draws only 5A. Samsung 30Q is good, or those litokala ones, molicel ones too.

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  5 місяців тому

      Runtime on turbo? Steps down after 30 seconds but overall runtime should be decent, maybe 2-3 hours if you start on turbo and leave it.

      Hi Darren. After learning from your reviews, I got a Sofirn SC31T for now - this will be for travelling so that I won't have to carry extra battery chargers. I recall you had good experience with that light.
      This S8 with SFT40 or PM1 will be my next on list.
      While browsing online prior to my purchase, I saw Acebeam Tac AA on sale for around US$21. It would have been a good bargain. My final choice was a light that I will use based on what I need, thus the SC31T.
      Btw, I still use a S1A Baton as my EDC.
      Cheers!

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  6 місяців тому

      Nice, that SC31T is a great entry level tactical light. I set this convoy to always start at 100% and disabled memory mode. 😊 @@alvintan6650

    • @alvintan6650
      @alvintan6650 6 місяців тому

      @@DarrenYeoYT i finally got my SC31T for about US$20. I notice a sort of ring border around the spill. Otherwise it fits my hand quite well and the wider spot at around 50 to 100 meters is what i need when walking at night.
      Does the S8 throw a little further? Your suggestion putting it in 100% with no memory seems useful.
      Can you recommened one (18660) that has a longer runtime on the high/turbo mode?

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  6 місяців тому

      Yes the S8 will throw further as it has a smooth reflector + de-domed emitter options. I'd suggest also looking at the convoy M1 and M2. @@alvintan6650

    Steps down too fast. Only a linear driver.

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  7 місяців тому

      A boost driver would sustain output better you reckon? I thought it was just the light heating up too fast.

    • @maggi98mw
      @maggi98mw 7 місяців тому

      @@DarrenYeoYTtheoretically a buck driver would heat up slower, but Simon's current buck driver steps down quicker than the linear driver.
