      When asked about Repetitive Strain Syndrome, he replied to the effect if a guitarist suffers from repetitive stain syndrome they aren't paying right so should go back to basics.

      Agree. Saw him live with James Morrison in Newcastle Australia once. Incredible.
      His brother Phil also very good. A band that they used to play in called Goldrush was awesome to see too.

Oh, and he also happens to be a brilliant composer and arranger. But a word of warning: once you start watching, hours will slip away.

    Love the way he digs into every note and squeezes so much tone from the guitar. Sure, some showy fun stuff, and kind of "full blast" most of the time, but with some real music in his fingers. You can hear his passion in the way he plays the strings, regardless of how fun and showy it might be. Gotta mix up the show with a tune like this once in a while!

  • @markhawthorne6683

    Why are people critising. The blues is personnal, self expression, wild untamed, calm. Tommy is clearly having fun, and thankfully we have been able to see what a great unspoilt blues man he is. No fancy guitar or effects. No one can say they can watch that and not be in awe of the guy. Incredible playing, that looks improvised, show casing a natural talent, and overall amazing entertainment value. I have been playing over 25 years and I take my hat off to him.

The only reason this guy doesn't make a lot of the top guitarists ever is because most people don't know about him ... They automatically think of Clapton or Hendrix etc ... Tommy has VERY big strong hands and fingers. YOU can see it, and hear it all through this. His hand volume thru the guitar reminds me of SRV, both with similar hands, and gut feelings for rhythm, Guthrie Govan has no hope here, even though he is a way better shredder. He is too thin in the hands to really crank animal volume like I mentioned above.

      hi I have been playing guitar for the past 30 years. clapton, hendrix, etc etc can play guitar dont get me wrong but they never played the chet atkins style with great effect base rythem and melody finger picking with the added acoustic drum beat of the acoustic. Tommy emmanuel takes it to another level beyond these guys, 1 of the greats.

      That's too bad, there are a couple of good tunes on them both. Everyone's taste in music is different of course. I could say I find Lenny Breau's playing to be very cerebral and lacking in soul. There is sometimes a lack of dynamics in his playing, but that would be nitpicking and maybe I have not spent enough time listening to him. Rolling Stone rated the top 100 guitar players of all time and neither Tommy or Lenny made the list. I guess according to the experts, we are both wrong. Chet Atkins liked them both enough to play shows with them. I have played with a lot of guitar players, and none of them would call Tommy or Lenny mediocre.
      I was a piano major (dumb move) and I could barely make it through the first few measures of any piece I was playing without my instructor stopping me and finding something wrong with at least one note I was playing. But she still liked my playing overall. I am glad she did not call my playing mediocre. I would hate to put all of that work into being mediocre.

      I appreciate your opinion, but you know what they say about those.
      Oscar Peterson is one if my favorite players, but I have ran in to people who will tell me they don't like or appreciate his playing. But, they are not arrogant enough to call it mediocre. You must be one heck of a guitarist to offer up that critique. I would live to hear you play sometime.

    Arthur it is apparent you have no idea who Tommy Emmanuel is, this man is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet yes this performance is not typical of his music it is just to showboat for a live show, The great late Chet Adkins call Tommy the best guitar player alive today and bestowed on him the CPG title (certified guitar player) one of only four that Chet gave out, Listen to his version of Michelle, and the song Those Who Wait, there are not many like Tommy.

    • @t3tsuyaguy1
      @t3tsuyaguy1 10 років тому +1

      You know? If you keep playing, the callouses go away after a few years.
      I had pretty hard rough callouses the first 3 years I played. There was a strip of ugly hard tissue on the outer edge of my forefinger from playing a ton barre chords. Then one I day I noticed they just weren't there anymore.
      It's a rare day, when I don't play at least an hour of guitar, but nothing ever hurts. The skin on my finger tips seems a bit thicker than anywhere else, but that's about it.
      I've met quite a few other guitarists with the same thing. I don't know why it is, but they go away.
