    Not at a University, they're all members of the Wings Fun Club. We were invited to Elstree Studios on Sunday 18th March 1973 for the James Paul McCartney TV special. I was there and also at another recording for the opening "Big Barn Bed" sequence on Tuesday 27th March. We were picked up at Hammersmith Odeon and taken by coach to the studio.

    Ahhh the wicked awesome 1970s...I was there folks!
    The decade that saw the rise and fading away of hippies with their transistor radios, hula hoops, pogo sticks, ripped and patched bellbottoms, Volkswagen vans with hand painted slogans using paint nobody in their right mind would ever use from the reduced bin, PEACE, FLOWER POWER, 'SAVE THE ENVIORMENT SHOWER WITH THREE CHICKS', SAVE THE WHALES BUT SHOOT THE SEALS ETC. ETC.
    And who could forget the vernacular - AWW RIGHT ARM MAYAN, FARM OUT!
    The greatest attribute of the era was all the very best of the very best music!! We refer to it today as "classic rock" That was the golden age of rock with the most talented musicians/song writers/bands!!
    The kids today with their transistor radios, hula hoops, frisbees and pogo sticks do NOT KNOW FOR MUSIC I TELLS YUS!!
    FETCH ME MY KICKING FOOT MA!! ")

    Give it up for the man, who started from scratch after the Fabs fell apart, made an entire new career for himself with an entirely new set of songs, and took it all the way to the top. Fun to watch Paul sing while he still had a great voice and was releasing new music that was top-notch. This man gave his entire life to us, more or less, and we rewarded him with fame, wealth and well-deserved prestige. When he finally dies, which could be 10 or 20 years from now, or tomorrow, the world will lose one-of-a-kind.

I was hooked as a small child when I first heard his magic voice on the radio as a small child in the mid 70s...silly love songs, coming up, let em in were the melodies that hooked me..then asking my father...who is that yelling during the coda of hey jude..then his voice during the live maybe I'm amazed from 76...i become a fanatic. When times were bad his music kept me cheery...just a one of a kind like you so eloquently put it.

    • @ferabra8939
      @ferabra8939 7 років тому +19

      True. Some serious talent there. Denny Laine was a very competent guitarist and excellent singer, Denny Seiwell's drumming was solid and yet inventive; Henry McCullough was a fabulous lead guitarist; and Linda, whatever was published at the time or since, played the parts that were required, that band didn't need a show off keyboard genius playing licks everywhere, more someone who stuck to the parts Paul came up with, and she did. Plus, the combination of Paul's,Denny's and Linda's vocals sounded really special. Of course, behind it all was a very young McCartney, a mere 30 year old, and already having recorded some of the best music ever. And yes, they were tight. Paul wouldn't have allowed otherwise ;-)

    • @allymayful
      @allymayful 7 років тому +7

      Yeah! A bit like the majority of the American music media, when it comes to the Bee Gee's. All they know about them, is a few songs of the '70s, and Barry's Falsetto. They act 'so cool/hip', when they write sarcastically about them. Whereas really they come across as dead boring - and totally ignorant, because they know nothing of their extensive catalogue, that covers many genres of music.
      I have heaps of respect for Barry, Paul and Brian Wilson, the original writers of their own music, all evolving in their own corner of the world, not aware of what was happening in the other 2 corners.

    That must have been a tough period for Paul. You can see that he's trying to appeal to the younger college crowd by opening up with Mess, and then playing Maybe I'm Amazed (his most popular solo song), and ending with a Beatles rendition of Long Tall Sally. That crowd had no idea that the former Beatle they were watching, had many #1 hits on the horizon, as well as a huge worldwide tour in 75-76.

      Well, yes there is a reason and it's a very good one. If anyone else had played bass on his post-Beatles albums, it would not have sounded anywhere near as good. He's one of the greatest bass players ever and his melodic basslines are legendary. Can you imagine what songs like 'Let Me Roll It' would sound like without Paul on bass? Thank God the other two refused.

    I have mixed emotions about this rare footage. It's great to see Paul back playing in a band post Beatles and moving on with his career, on the college scene too rather impromptu. But he also kind of looks like he's trying to hard to prove to people this band is legit. But I did really enjoy him on Maybe I'm Amazed, that was an amazing performance of it by Paul. The guitar solo on it too rocks!

    This is really Motown music with guitars, so really it's older than most of the stuff The Beatles made between 1966-69. The 70s took a step back quite a bit apart from the Germans and the prog rockers.

      The 3rd song maybe, but the other 2 are products of the early '70s, a rocker and a ballad.

      Paul's youngest 2 children bear an incredible likeness to the real pre-66 McCartney.
      They were born many years later. How would a fake lookalike Get paul's DNA to pass to his children?
      Stop the nonsense and enjoy the real McCartney while he is still with us.

    An interesting point about modern music rights. Once you record someone else's song and pay the fee, you can then add that song to your Repertoire forever. Just like 'Long Tall Sally'. That is probably why they stopped allowing remakes of Beatles songs.

I was there and also at another recording for the opening "Big Barn Bed" sequence on Tuesday 27th March. We were picked up at Hammersmith Odeon and taken by coach to the studio.
