LEGENDS! Jimmy Smith is the greatest jazz organist EVER! Stanley Turrentine's Tone is so big that he didn't no stinking mic! Kenny Burrell is my #3 favorite jazz guitarist and Grady Tate is legendary, for laying down a beat that even a metronome would be envious of!
I've played electric and upright bass and toured professionally since 1974 and did over 25 recording sessions. I have to say that Jimmy Smith "SMOKES" most bass players. He was a real inspiration to me as a bass player. I had the pleasure of doing some gigs with Bill Willis when I was gigging in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Bill was originally a bass player for Freddie King-"The Texas Cannonball" and switched to Hammond and foot bass with Jimmy Vaughn's band, "The Tilt-A-Whirls". Bill played a lot like Jimmy Smith...enough said. Jimmy Smith was as good as they get!!!
Kenny is a brilliant comper and master of tastefully altered voicings, I learned from frequently watching him play at The Lighthouse in the 60's, that tape and cardboard on JS's B-3 looks to me like a little protection so the organ and piano don't get scratched. there is tape lying on top of the piano as well. Kenny's still touring bless him! cliffintokyo
These guys were cooking with gas, Stanley opening, starting boiling straight away then Kenny simmered things down then Jimmy boiled over. This was unadulterated pleasure.
Oh yeah, now this is the shit here! They used to come jam at my after hours club (Dupri's) I owned with bail bonds man Tommy Tucker in L.A. during the 1960's.
Here's something that drives me crazy. I have an original copy of the vinyl of "Midnight Special." This tune is correctly listed there as "Jumpin' the Blues." When the CD came out, somebody was not paying attention, and so now it is listed everywhere as "The Jumpin' Blues." Such utter disrespect!
The 'Absolute' Best Jazz that was played by the 'Absolute' Best Jazz Players! The kind of Jazz Players that ONLY come along ONCE in a person's Life Time! Coordinated Soul, the Best of Rhytms, Sounds, Mixed in Explicit Timing. The dish comes out>The Best of the Best in Jazz Music however it is said! THE BEST...
@37sikora That cardboard must be a low-tech sound baffle improvised by the recording engineers. I never saw Jimmy "hide his feet" when I heard him play live. I learned how to read the pedal board from watching Jimmy's feet for years, a skill which helped me survive when I started playing gospel. I would follow the bass part to pick up an unfamiliar tune at church.
@37sikora What makes you think Jimmy is trying to hide his feet? I would assume (As you have) that cardboard is to cover up the name of perhaps the rental company that owns the organ or some corporate logo.If he were trying to hide his feet they would have given him a C3 which has the inclosed cabinet.
Was there a bass player on this tune? It sounded so full, kinda didnt miss one...what do you guys think?...trying my best to remember a piece JS did back in the day with him and a sax player doing the main theme...also had a bad guitar player in there....I know I need to give more info but can any one help with this??? Would be sooo greatful!!
yea i didnt know what it was. just thought it looked funny. after looking back. i see its only on one side of the organ. yeah. i dont know why you all get so crazy about it thought. sorry. i just thought it was funny that there was a piece of trash taped to it. don't see what its blocking either if its a baffle. though its right next to that grand piano. hmmm...

The farther from the CHART they go the more excited the musicians get and the facial expressions and telepathy floors me.
Bought Midnight Special in the 60s and still playing it. These men are unsurpassable.

This is grate jazz !!! Grate players and instruments make top sounds...
Killer solos by Kenny and Stanley. Seemed like Jimmy was laying back a little. Not as flashy as he often is.
This is an all-star cast! I saw this group at a place called Fat Tuesdays in NYC[ I knew the Drummer personally! Pure talent!

I wish Jimmy's Bass lines were more audible on this great performance.

The bass is played by the organist'\s left hand, at the bottom of the lower manual, with some assistance from the pedals.

Funny that Jimmy has a bunch of cardboard duct taped to the organ so people can't see his feet.
