China's pollution dilemma - Inside Story

  • Smog levels in Beijing this year were almost seven times the maximum exposure recommended by the World Health Organization. That makes the smog a matter of life and death.
In the first quarter of this year more than 90 percent of Chinese cities failed to meet the government's own air-quality standards.
Air pollution contributes to 17 percent of all deaths in China. As many as 1.6 million people died this year as a result of air pollution, the Berkeley Research Group estimates. That's about 4,400 people dying every day.
But what is the government doing to tackle the issue? And why has it failed to strike a balance between economic growth and public health?
    Presenter: Kamahl Santamaria
    Guests:
Einar Tangen - Political and economic affairs analyst advising the Chinese government.
Steve Tsang - Senior fellow at the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
Tamara Savelyeva - Professor at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

We assume economic activity and growth comes hand in hand with pollution. You can still have economic growth with better pollution controls. Take examples from Germany where you have an industry related to controlling pollution and waste. If you ignore the environmental impact - in the long term you will negatively impact economic activity and growth. And in communist China they can quickly change laws and start doing this better.

It may be a no-brainer, but there is plenty of technology available to clean up emissions from power stations and steel mills. How about using it?
Do their cars use catalytic converters?
The reasons so much heavy industry has vanished in the west is partly because of draconian measures against pollution which price them out of the market. China and India are not fettered by this but we still suffer indirectly from their pollution (according to the global warming alarmists).

The problem is green industry is still in it's infancy at best. It will be a long time before it's efficiency energy output and reliability are created as a viable selling product. The United States has went down this alley before by a political administration and failed because of that fact. Photovoltaic technology is at best 15 percent efficient and wind turbine technology is even less. The only renewable resource is hydropower and we've nearly exhausted that resource.

Mr. Negate Rainn is a massive apologist for China, defending them at every turn and making the "reduction in the number of NEWLY CONSTRUCTED coal-fired power plants" sound like it's actually a net reduction in the overall number in use. There are over 1100 currently in use with dozens more planned for construction in the next few years. There is currently a massive problem with air pollution which will only worsen as more come online. So reducing the number of NEWLY CONSTRUCTED plants is definitely NOT the same thing as taking measures to reduce air pollution.

    • @needmoreramsay
      @needmoreramsay Рік тому

"the number of plants (nuclear) now being created IN CHINA *_around the world (quietly)_* exceeds 100. Unless you are paying attention, his statement will leave the impression that CHINA is planning/building over 100 nuclear plants. It's subtle manipulation.

China is developing gradaully and suffering some problems, China will solve them gradaully. By the way, 13 Indian cities are among the most 20 polluted cities in the world, none of China city are among the top 20 polluted cities in the world. With far more serious pollution than China and almost same popullation, India GDP is only 2.5 trillion USD in 2016, while China GDP is 11 trillion USD in 2016.

But yeah, its all about actually enforcing what the party is implementing.

electric car production 24/7 for the next 20 years then take away gas powered. except military and slowly but need to start now hydrogen buses and different tech energy efficiency and yes environmental ecosystem is important you have more than enough citizens and students to foarm a guideline for companies and citizens maybe once you phase out gas engines make people pay to have a carbon vehicle.

Ian, your solution is brilliant! However, China has this intent to eliminate human lives that are not relevant to CCP. The absence of oil is not the problem as Vaughan Ross mentioned China uses coal that could be complimented with the use of crude oil to produce power when they succeed to occupy the whole South China Sea.
