China's pollution dilemma - Inside Story
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 гру 2015
- Smog levels in Beijing this year were almost seven times the maximum exposure recommended by the World Health Organization. That makes the smog a matter of life and death.
In the first quarter of this year more than 90 percent of Chinese cities failed to meet the government's own air-quality standards.
Air pollution contributes to 17 percent of all deaths in China. As many as 1.6 million people died this year as a result of air pollution, the Berkeley Research Group estimates. That's about 4,400 people dying every day.
But what is the government doing to tackle the issue? And why has it failed to strike a balance between economic growth and public health?
Presenter: Kamahl Santamaria
Guests:
Einar Tangen - Political and economic affairs analyst advising the Chinese government.
Steve Tsang - Senior fellow at the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
Tamara Savelyeva - Professor at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

You'd think that China would be on the forefront of renewable energy research via necessity.
Sad, Beijin's awesome modern beauty hidden by smoke.
Add in the huge percentage of adults who are heavy smokers, and you have a disaster

You just can't sustain massive growth. You need to develop safeguards and protections.

what are the levels extreme toxins in the soup????
Is it possible what we are seeing now in 2020 as a result of changes not being made to prevent this disaster of Wuhan which is affecting all of us Globally
Glad I live in the UK. Clean air, clean tap water, and safe food. Rule Britannia!
Glad I live in Canada, fresh water and air. Much open space to go hiking and camping, pristine clear water.
London is polluted, but it's just a little haze and the sky is still clear, not too extreme as Asia
So glad I live in North America

We assume economic activity and growth comes hand in hand with pollution. You can still have economic growth with better pollution controls. Take examples from Germany where you have an industry related to controlling pollution and waste. If you ignore the environmental impact - in the long term you will negatively impact economic activity and growth. And in communist China they can quickly change laws and start doing this better.
Environmental Protection is a good plan to have
It may be a no-brainer, but there is plenty of technology available to clean up emissions from power stations and steel mills. How about using it?
Do their cars use catalytic converters?
The reasons so much heavy industry has vanished in the west is partly because of draconian measures against pollution which price them out of the market. China and India are not fettered by this but we still suffer indirectly from their pollution (according to the global warming alarmists).
oh boy cant wait for a fallout winter
the green fog of the 1950's that was a couple day event. China's smog is a Everyday thing.
18th Century London had a permanent smog though... and permanent refuse stink.
The problem is green industry is still in it's infancy at best. It will be a long time before it's efficiency energy output and reliability are created as a viable selling product. The United States has went down this alley before by a political administration and failed because of that fact. Photovoltaic technology is at best 15 percent efficient and wind turbine technology is even less. The only renewable resource is hydropower and we've nearly exhausted that resource.
Typical Chinese panelist’s compare with London 50 years ago. Dumb it down.

Mr. Negate Rainn is a massive apologist for China, defending them at every turn and making the "reduction in the number of NEWLY CONSTRUCTED coal-fired power plants" sound like it's actually a net reduction in the overall number in use. There are over 1100 currently in use with dozens more planned for construction in the next few years. There is currently a massive problem with air pollution which will only worsen as more come online. So reducing the number of NEWLY CONSTRUCTED plants is definitely NOT the same thing as taking measures to reduce air pollution.
"the number of plants (nuclear) now being created IN CHINA *_around the world (quietly)_* exceeds 100. Unless you are paying attention, his statement will leave the impression that CHINA is planning/building over 100 nuclear plants. It's subtle manipulation.

Lie already at the beginning, ''levels never seen before'' it was actually worse very often before that, just because they issued the first two red alerts it doesn't mean it was worse than ever before.
China is developing gradaully and suffering some problems, China will solve them gradaully. By the way, 13 Indian cities are among the most 20 polluted cities in the world, none of China city are among the top 20 polluted cities in the world. With far more serious pollution than China and almost same popullation, India GDP is only 2.5 trillion USD in 2016, while China GDP is 11 trillion USD in 2016.
"Gradually, pfft. The probem is that there is no time for "gradually". If they don't get a handle on their rapid destruction of their air and water resources *very* quickly, China is done for.
China has polluted its ground water, it has thousands of cancer villages. This scale is worse in china.
You’re so wrong 16 out of the top 20 polluted cities are in China
And they're punished for sticking up the guy that first pointed out the coronavirus basically got murdered
Vaccums should be installed in every vechiles running on the streets. Suction can indeed eliminate air pollution
I'm totally on board with Mr. Beijing people don't know how low the PM 2.5 levels are in other countries. Mr. Anti-China needs to provide more solutions like Ms. HK did.
But yeah, its all about actually enforcing what the party is implementing.
If i was in north china i would build a wind turbine on my house to power electric blankets
Just building several nuclear power plants.

Truthfully, the Communist Party keeping itself in power is not about maintaining a high standard of living for an electorate, but rather it is dependent upon its ability to maintain coersive control resulting in public submission.

electric car production 24/7 for the next 20 years then take away gas powered. except military and slowly but need to start now hydrogen buses and different tech energy efficiency and yes environmental ecosystem is important you have more than enough citizens and students to foarm a guideline for companies and citizens maybe once you phase out gas engines make people pay to have a carbon vehicle.
Electric cars are worse, in China, most electricity is generated by burning coal, low-quality coal that pollutes more as well.
Ian, your solution is brilliant! However, China has this intent to eliminate human lives that are not relevant to CCP. The absence of oil is not the problem as Vaughan Ross mentioned China uses coal that could be complimented with the use of crude oil to produce power when they succeed to occupy the whole South China Sea.
ian murray why don’t you start an electric car company and you do it
Vaughan Ross what’s the solution
THEY NEED TESLA BATTERY PACKS, AND NEED TO CONVERT ALL THEIR INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY TO BE ABLE TO CHARGE FROM AN ELECTRIC GRID SYSTEM. GEOTHERMAL ENERGY, SOLAR AND BATTERY PACKS! HUMANS STOP BURNING STUFF.. IT GOES INTO YOUR AIR AND LUNGS. ALSO BEWARE OF RADIATION WASTE
Alien O-I agree with you and China should make this their #1 priority
What are the people in China going to do about this? Some have said that they will run out of fresh water by 2030. As one of Americas largest trading partner, that is horrendous news.

I believe China has gotten their act together over the past few years.
The problem is greed. This is why in the Bible and other holy books warn us about greediness.
Yes bible has the solution, how did that work for the west. Moron.
