Watching him made my knee’s hurt! How much we take for granted in our “modern” world. Those guys are just glad to have electricity for their 75 year old pedestal grinder mounted to a concrete slab on the floor! I love it!
@@johnb7889 I spent many years as a fitter welder on my knees alot of the time and yes I would agree, my knees can be very sore at times, wear and tear I should of wore the knee pads. I did a bit of smithing as well and would love to set up me own forge just to try make some swords and knives.
@Apentogo "its actually much stranger for blacksmiths to forge while standing, cuz that way you have to spend time to raise all your equipment up off the ground and you tend to become inefficient with the placement to give you room to walk around." Not at all. Besides, there's no inconvenience on where the tools go. It's just a difference in position and height of the setup, and standing is a better platform for that than sitting or worse, kneeling
@Apentogo True, but when you're off the ground you are away from the muck and impurities and can mount your stuff more efficiently. You also have less limitations and can brace your body better. For example, if you have your grinder a little too far away, you wobble on your knees so you don't have to reposition, because it's just habit.

It was amazing to see brain, hand and eye so coordinated through experience as to need no help from measuring devices. In the knife, technology meets art. Forging and blade making have been done roughly the same way for many hundreds of years but I wonder whether the old man has an apprentice, or will his skills die with him? We are living at the end of an era.

The man who is acting as the striker with the heavy hammer, would be the apprentice in this case, possibly he would be the senior apprentice or journeyman with the responsibility of helping the master craftsman, to teach any other apprentices and to provide discipline as necessary. The youngest apprentices would be responsible for doing any household chores including fetching any food and cooking it as well as studying their profession. Bear in mind that a metalworkers apprenticeship in some parts of the world can start as young as 7 or 8 years old and they might only become a journeyman, well into their 20’s finally passing out of their time at anything up-to or over 40 years old.
You can't get it done with any less tools then that I got a Damascus steel blade with a Koa wood handle, and this is how it was made. A nice blade but a lot of work make me appreciate it even more
@Matthew M It has a full tang in the handle, great edged weapon, and the design looks like it was routered in not just a design on the metal a blind person could tell what the pattern was by scraping their fingernails into it.
@Matthew M someone who's like a second mom to me went to Hawaii on vacation and I watched her house for two weeks, when she got back she brought this knife and gave it to me as a thanks. She know I appreciate a good knife. I baby this sucker one of my most prized possessions as far as my weapons or tools go

Сейчас занимаюсь изготовлением и продажей дрифттрайков ( тут ещё сложнее продавать) зато удовольствия больше, хочу попробовать мотосамокатами заняться. Blacksmiths in the Philippines are like this too, the tools they use do not compare to their Western counterparts, but the blades they produce are quite good and sturdy, definitely for everyday duty
Our rural blacksmiths use old leaf-spring suspension used by trucks to make heavy knives. To make kitchen knife, they use band-saw pieces rejected by local timber sawmills. The craft shown in this video is still the method followed by traditional blacksmiths of my country. ( India )

I’m an old aircraft mechanic who spent hours and hours on my knees and now they hurt. Alot! But thanks for the blacksmithing history lesson.

Most of the African, Middle eastern, Asian and Far Eastern forges are at ground level and the artisans usually squat. Nomadic forge artisans put up their forges on plain ground and put a tent above for a few weeks and move to the next site....

Really hard and precise work.What are the grit wheel numbers which are changed for grinding and sharpening?
I used 50 and 80 grit stones. I use 60 and and 120 then 220 grit paper and polish pads from there. It’s reasonable to assume something similar.

Судя по цвету искр и по возможности обработки напильником - углерода в этом "ноже" чуть больше чем в арматурном прутке... Но и "клинок" сделанный из арматуры можно заточить на 5-10 резов бумаги ... Я один раз для прикола - нож стоимостью 100 рублей на 8 000 грит - довёл до возможности волос стругануть и да он был очень острым, пока им один кусок хлеба не отрезали...
Для тех кто не понял : "ПРИМИТИВНАЯ ТЕХНОЛОГИЯ..."© (из названия) заключается в том, что люди примитивно делают не понимая, что и почему они делают...
