    We appreciate you sharing your efforts and results. This is exactly why Vintage Tank Solutions offers a NEW 280Z Poly Fuel Tank as an alternate option. Not only is there the issue of removing all the old crud, varnish, rust, and corrosion on original steel tanks, but the pick-up and tubes can become clogged or damaged. Since the pick-up is located at the bottom of a steel baffle cylinder one can't easily inspect it to determine its condition. There's a mesh screen on them, the cylinder walls are within ~1/2" to 3/4" from the mesh filter. If any build up (which is common) is lodged between the mesh filter and cylinder wall, the pick-up will not be 100% free to pull fuel thus affecting fuel pressure and engine fuel delivery. For decades Z owners have been attempting to clean out their 280Z tanks, some have had to do this several times over including cutting them open and welding them back shut. We don't disagree with the methods used and at times it can be successful, but when one considers the cleaning time/methods involved, the chemicals (and waste of said chemicals) involved, safety precautions, shopping time/downtime, environmental factors, etc its best to start with a fresh fuel tank. This way you can do more chilling and driving versus wrenching 😉

      Interesting! We havent had any issues with fuel pressure, but it's probably due to our upgraded fuel pump/pickup and filter. With our setup, we eliminated the use of the factory pickup tube. Thank you for sharing another option for our viewers. And just so the viewers have more information... what is the current price of your 280Z poly tank? And does it work with the 260Z and 240Z models?

    Alternative method option.
    I used rustzilla. Just pour a few cups in, seal the tank and tumble. Converts the rust to a solid polymer like coating. My 620 tank sat open in a field for 21 years and this method worked like a champ. It's been over a year and the fuel filter is still fairly clean.

      Thanks for mentioning that one as well! That sounds great for rusty tanks, but unfortunately, with this one, we were mainly battling a thick varnish/sludge coating that the rust removers wouldn't touch 😔

    Thanks guys for putting this together as I did also take interest in this quite awhile ago, i'll definately pass this on to my oldest grandson and his dad who are restoring the 240!!!! Waiting to hear about the cost of the Poly tank too eh!!!! I'm sure they will have the same issues for when the youngest grandson comes to get the 280Z, they both were sitting since 92 in my garage. 240 was a Ca. car and the 280 unfortunately is a Me. car so has some body work to address.

    Thanks for sharing your process. I found the wheel tumbler very inventive, and funny of course. I think more time on that, probably with a different abrasive medium, would have given you better results. But with the cost of gas for the truck, probably not cost affective. :) I'll be interested in your fuel pump installation, especially the HydroMat. I converted my 56 Chevy wagon gas tank to an internal EFI pump, and have been thinking about adding the HydroMat to it. I enjoy seeing your seeing your garage adventures, keep them coming.

    The wheel spinning is definitely something new lol, do you plan on doing any e85 in that tank?

    • @WrenchChill
      @WrenchChill  2 роки тому

      We were pretty desperate at that point! And we don't have any sources for E85 around us, so probably not 😕
