Ah yes... Just sit back and soak it in. This is just awesome! They are both jaw-dropping, out-of-this-world... I love these mandolin medleys that transition from classical to bluegrass...
Sad that there are so many ignorant comments when we should be just enjoying this incredible music!!! Most must have not heard Mikes guitar playing with D. Grisman, and incredible original tunes with Darol Anger. I have most of the great records hes played on, do you? All top level players are equal in the eyes of God!
The torch has been passed. Even on the Monroe stuff (Big Mon, Old Danger Field), Thile proves his prodigious talent. I heard a tape once of Grisman at Winfield introducing Marshall as the "greatest mandolin player in the world" ... Marshall went on the play the solo Partita in E by Bach, which in the early 80's was a tremendous feat. So yeah, Marshall was the best, and remains a formidable, highly creative musical presence -- but Thile is the man on the mandolin.
Actually thats from Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker suite. That lasts until 2:00, and then they take another theme from the same piece at 2:05. From there they go into some crazy fast bluegrass. They improvise on that until Sleich Ride at 4:10 or so. They go into some sort o folk tune after that, but I don't know the name of that or the bluegrass tune.
While Thile is a prodigy , Marshall has long years of study , experience and acquired knowledge of the intricacies of the instrument - He is the one to be seen as a model...
Mike Marshall - Master, Chris Thile - Prodigy.
oh my god, chris's lines are AMAZING
Mike Marshall is fantastic

Chris from 3.21 to 3.44 is absolutely amazing.
Awesome! I wish I could've seen 'em live!
Saw these two live in Portland at the Aladdin Theater. 20 plus songs, no sheet music. Now on to Nickle Creek live next month.

WOW!
The bluegrass peice near the beginning is Jerusalem Ridge by Bill Monroe
They can each do anything they want to with a mandolin. They just approach it in different ways. Both are at the absolute top of their field.
It's actually Big Mon, by Bill Monroe.
Baked!
Big Mon maybe? (Also Monroe)
