Thanks for the careful explanation. 100% on the eye & face protection using a grinder, you're better off using a guard and going bare handed with high speed tools, you definately don't want a glove getting caught and wrapped up in the moving parts. In real cold weather you can go with gloves, but you'd want to be real deliberate, keep back from moving parts. Good technique on tightening the handles, wise advice overall I think.

I do not know the specific steel alloy. These old drawknives have a high carbon steel blade forge welded to a mild steel frame.
