    Very informative video - I would keep verbiage consistent; Address vs. Channel. You assign an address and enter the number of channels. You used the term, "channel" for both Address and Channel. But, this was a very helpful video

    Great video! You mentioned that we should utilize all available channels each light has to offer. The Mega Par has 7 channels (as you mentioned), but you only chose to utilize 3. I was wondering why this was.

      Chris Zuniga He is only using the Red , GREEN, BLUE Channels .. which are DMX 1 ,2, 3 ... But unlike what he shows if you are going to use another fixture on a different channel then it has to be addressed 17-32 ..

    With the Obey 40 ( not my fav controller btw) each fixure button is 16 channels (1)1-16 (2) 17-32 (3)33-48 etc. Im pretty sure you cannot change that. So no matter what your next DMX channel it would have to be1, 17,33 etc and so on every 16 channels. You could still do a start channel at 4 and 6 and 9 etc but they would all have to be programmed on that fixture button 1. The Obey 40 doesn't have fixture profiles that tell the controller where to stop each channel and it wouldn't really matter if it did since your only going to be able to program 12 fixtures anyway. Its a very BASIC controller and I wouldn't recommend it for anything but the very very basic simple stuff.

    Great video but very misleading . Most of your NON MOVING fixtures use 5 to 8 channels . Your Moving fixtures can use up to 36 channels , but this is about standard pars . DMX is set up to use up 16 channels with each fixture . That is just how DMX works . So each fixture would be set at 1-16 , 17-32 , 33-48 and so on and so on .. Just because you are only using 3 or 4 channels of a Par light doesn't mean anything when it comes to DMX . The way you chart it out is GREAT but it won't work . OR did I miss that DMX Class ? Please Explain . I have only been doing lighting a short time now , 37 years ... LOL ..Thank you for the Video ...

      Thank you for clearfying in this feedback by addressing 1 // 20 // 40 // 60 // 80 // 100 // 120 // on one daisy chain. Present question is this group / layer / daisy chain is this a dmx universe?

    How about this?
    Regardless of how many channels does it have, set a 16 channels to each fixtures.
    Is it O.K?

    • @BigHeartedMan65
      @BigHeartedMan65 9 років тому

      Kazuyuki Ohmori DMX control standard is set up to use 16 channels of DMX . As I said above you have to address each fixture 1-16 , 17-32 and so on ... OR you can put them all on 1-16 and all of the reds will come on at one time as will the greens ,blues and whites ...

    If I need to setup 20 fixtures in a room and want to control 10 of them separately from the other 10 and the fixtures is 13 channels (eternal echo edge) do I set the first ten to 001 then the second ten to 014?

    • @BigHeartedMan65
      @BigHeartedMan65 9 років тому

      Tamar Ghobrial If you are only going to use ten fixtures on each channel all you do is address the first ten fixtures to 1 on Channel one , then the next ten fixtures would start at 17 on channel two . Done ... .

      stefnasty there are MANY GREAT Hands On Videos here on UA-cam . Just keep watching and for Real Hands on Go to one of your Local small theaters and ask if you can volunteer with the lights . You can learn ALOT from most of the guys doing the lights at those places. BUT you can also learn the Wrong things as well ... Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions . Good Luck

As in Lighting Designer , Up Rigger , Down Rigger , Electrician , and Moving Light Repair Tech ... Like I said there are TONS of video's on UA-cam but nothing beats hands on . Contact some of your local Lighting and Production Places and see if they offer any classes . GOOD LUCK and HAVE ALOT OF FUN and As Always BE SAFE ... Make a lot of Memories as well ...

    Umm, I don't mean to split hairs here but I will... AMX wasn't around during the time of jimmy hendrix. AMX wasn't even put to practice in lighting until the late 1970s. In the 1960 and 70s there was different systems that each brand used that was unique to there consoles and fixtures. Also, AMX wasn't 2 channels, it was 192 channels and the cable that AMX had 4 pins. It also was the first standardized method of lighting communication so different brands of consoles could talk to brands of fixtures. Example: AMX was invented so a Strand light board could talk to a ETC dimmer, before AMX the whole lighting system had to be one brand or another.
    Also, YES AMX wasn't as efficient but the basic concepts of DMX is the same as AMX the major difference is AMX is slower and runs 192 channels while DMX runs faster with 512 chancels. Also, traditional DMX runs on 5 pins but a lot of people only use 3pin DMX cables now. This is because some people have gotten tired of the last 2 pins never being used some people have started to manufacture 3 pin DMX instead (its cheaper). 5pin cables are still considered more profession in the lighting world but it ultimately works just the same.
    ALSO, keep in mind that DMX isn't really referred to as intelligent lighting. DMX actually came out for theater to give them the ability to send more channels to a dimmer. And DMX was invented before the idea of Intelegent lights like we know it now, like RGB LED lights and moving heads.
    Think of it like this intelligent lights have actually been modified to talk to the an old system we now call DMX. DMX and AMX was only designed to run values of 0 to 255(AMX was 0 to 10 volts) or in other words, 0%-100% intensity. A dimmer would only read 1 dimmer per-channel(if you patched it that way). The intelligent fixtures have been modified to read those values in sets of channels. like you see demonstrated so well in this video.
    THANKS for stating that you need a true DMX cable. THAT is very true!!! but the real reasons to use a DMX cable verses a mic cable are different from what you stated in this video.
    ALSO at 9:38 you said it was flashing because you haven't programed it yet. It was actually be flashing because the fixture isn't receiving a DMX single. It's just its way of helping you trouble shoot DMX single loss. It's true that it didn't flash when you entered the menu but it will start flashing again once you start idling the menu. Notice it idles at 10:27 and starts flashing again telling the user that it isn't receiving a DMX single.
    Otherwise, this is a really good explanation of the basics of lighting. Thanks for the video! :)

      Brian Payne During the Jimmy Hendrix days we were using # 10 Food Cans with a Car Headlight in them grouped together in sets of 10 to get the 120 volts spread out . Just like the 24 volt ACL's in Groups of 5 ,some did 4 .. Also for dimmer control EDI set the Standard back then with 0 -20 volts (later to be changed to 0-10 volts) and the cables we carried we're as big around as a baseball bat at the tip ... AND FLIPPIN HEAVY ... LOL... Then DMX 512 came out . But them Morpheus Lights said That will NEVER fly so they came up with there own Protocol That Only they used for there moving lights . It never caught on and DMX 512 Lives on today . Lighting in the old days was fun . I have the Burn marks on my arms and legs to prove it ... LOL

    I know this is an old video, but I just got to comment ... Virtually all the information is not just misleading - it's wrong! The chart will be absolutely no good for planning your lighting ... With a standard 16 channels per fixture/scanner controller your chart should have 1 to 16 across and at least 12 fixtures/scanners down. Fixture #1 start address = 0001 fixture #2 start address = 0017 fixture #3 start address = 0033 and so on. It doesn't matter how many channels your fixture has it's start address should always correspond to the start address of the controller fixture button you want it to be controlled by. You can have more than one identical fixtures on the same start address but they will all do the same thing when you select the relevant fixture on the controller. The guy in this video knows nothing at all about DMX controlled stage/DJ lighting.
