  • You may be able to save some money if you recycle or repurpose you old, but still good enough, 12V car battery by charging it with solar power. In this video, I presented one way to do it, using a 60W solar panel (Bosca) and a solar charge controller. Once fully charged, even a 3-year old car battery like mine here, can be used as backup in various ways: connecting an inverter to power small, AC electronic loads. You can take it with you to hook up 12V DC led lights for farms, camping, or lighting during brown outs (power black outs). The battery can also just remain connected to the controller, with the solar panel and inverter for convenience. But I prefer to have it in the manner shown in the video as my main purpose is portability of the battery and light. The main cost in this DIY project is just the 60W solar panel, which cost around P2,100. The solar charge controller can be had for around P330. Estimated prices only. Other than that, I can literally recharge my 12V battery for free for more opportunities to use it.

awesome stuff, I"m using deep-cycle AGM batteries and LiFePO4 but I needed a less expensive alternative, will use some old car batteries thanks to your tip!
