Look, if you want a decent set of irons, and you don’t want to pay for name brand nonsense, these irons are perfectly fine. Here’s how stupid I am. I got a set of TM P790s 4-A with KBS TGI 90 shafts. Total cost was around $1700. I can’t stand them. I wasted my money. I’m not a scratch golfer. If I could do it all over again, I would’ve got one of the direct to consumer irons with normal shafts and be done with it. The only club that has significantly changed my golf, has been the LAB Golf Mezz1 Max. Everything else I have has not significantly helped my game. Why pay $1700 when you can pay $600 and play just as well? I might sell all my stuff and get some Maltby TS1 IM for $559. Maltby also makes a TS4 forged blade if you need that. It simply doesn’t add up to buy name brand stuff. There are too many good clubs for a lot better price.

In order to get good at golf, you need to play. A lot. Greens fees prevent the average person from playing more than a dozen or so rounds a year.

💯 there’s a company called Get Golfing in the UK. For £450 you will get around 30 rounds a year. Not top courses but good enough to improve. However many courses are £100+ per round which is crazy.

Honestly if you're in the market for something that looks similar to that PXG and still performs well, I'd go look at the Sub 70 golf 649 or 659 MB's or the TAIII Forged. TAIII's are $826.00USD for 4-PW, 649 MB's are $649.00 for 4-PW and that's both club sets fitted for loft and lies, a regular flex KBS Tour lite shaft and grey Lamkin Crossline standard grips which is an upcharge of $21... People forget about Sub 70. Takomo and Caley or now the Kirklands are nice, but there are a few other options...

There is no need to go alll the way to the 0317 to get into the PXG line. The 0211 is in my opinion the best choice for those looking for incredibly good quality, great looks, custom fitting, and performance. They are only slightly more than the Kirklands, but you can get custom fit easily and choose your setup. I, for example have absolutely no use for a 4 iron (honestly I and many others could pass on the 5 also in favor of easier to hit high lofted woods) but love the GW in the 0211 line. I think for most nonscratch players Kirkland made huge missteps with the set makeup and the heavy shafts. You can get custom fitting and top notch performance at a great price--but not from Kirkland. (For reference, I'm not a hack--just shot a -4 68 last week with the 0211 irons and driver.)

I have gen 3 0311P irons and saw a guy at a simulator with a PXG bag so I decided to talk to him. He had a bag with black ops driver, TM mini driver, PXG hybrid, black gen 6 0311 irons, a sugar daddy wedge and putter. Spent almost 3k and had never been on a course. I said why not get the 0211 and said for a little more he could get the 0311. And he got the military discount.

@@userb83852 Which is why a fitting helps so much. It will help you find the clubs that are most forgiving for your most common misses. I would never recommend expensive fittings, because I rarely recommend expensive things in general. But a cheap or free fitting can avoid the mistake of buying clubs that don't forgive the swings you make. Simple concept that is absolutely true.

I bought a set of Cobra f9 irons in 2019 5 through gap wedge paid $900. Just replaced them with Takomo 101 same shaft as theCobra’s $505 shipped to my door. So James, I’ll make this easy… you don’t get 3x the performance of the Kirkland Irons in the PXGs, which are butt ugly in my book. If I’m spending $1,500 on just my main irons, I expect a ton more than these delivery. I take the Kirklands and spend the rest on some short irons, putter and driver from Kirkland… Now I just need a 3W or a 2I to finish the set and I still have about $300 left. I was a 7 handicap when I played a lot and I’m thinking about getting back into the game, so this is directly relevant to me.

    Golf 2024 is too expensive?
    Yes BUT.
I played my 1st round of golf in 1978.
My local municipal golf club charged £5 for a round.
    Today they charge £18.
My golf balls cost about £2.80 for 3 i think....a similar ball today (because it was a good ball back then but not now) would be £5ish.
New clubs....well for a start you had to go find somewhere that was selling clubs (my 3 local courses didn't sell clubs (persimmon back then) you could buy them in your mum's catalogue (i got my 1st set there i needed to because I'm a lefty so i couldn't use my mates. I think a 1-3-5 woods 3 iron to SW set cost me about £300.
My wage back then? £42 a week.(I was very young pay was often less for younger staff). Golf probably not that bad in cost today then.
For comparison my top flight football team used to charge me 50 pence for the boys pen or about £2 a ticket.
Now less just say it costs a lot more in the premier league.

If you want a decent set of irons I’m selling my little used set 4-PW TaylorMade P790s with graphite F3 (RH). I’ve had to move to senior shafts after major heart op and prostate cancer. All good now, but lost 20% of clubhead speed. They are. BARGAIN AT £485.

Probably going to ruffle a few feathers, but here goes. I play a set of 2016 Callaway Cf-16s 4i- gap wedge. I paid a total of around 350$ for them 4 years ago. I guarantee that they play just as well as any new club on the market. Pay what you want for shiny new, but it ain't going to improve your game! Spent your money on lessons and golf balls! And Kirkland signature balls are a good option!

I live out on a small ranch in South Texas. I do a lot of practicing out on my place. I took the shredder on the tractor to a bunch of the brush and it is my practice area, better grazing for the livestock area. I have a mat and hit from that to simulate grass. I do a lot of practice from the dry dirt to simulate courses I will encounter. Two rounds of golf per month is about my max. The green fees are OK, but the courses are in humble shape. In the tractor metal shop building, I have a piece of putting green material I roll out 15x30 feet. I have also used the local elementary school grounds out back for wedges practice. It is just mown grass. Take a shag bag in the evening and get some practice. They water it to keep the grass growing. Use your imagination for how and where to practice. Golf nets are good but do not allow you to really see where the ball would end up. Foam balls in the yard have value as well. Get your practice up and you can improve even if you cannot afford lots of rounds at the course. Also, quality practice does not have to be hours of effort. I will hit balls at the ranch for 10 minutes before sundown often, drink a beer (ice cold beer on a hot summer evening? GOOD!), then pick them up in the morning.

  • @Pud56
    @Pud56 4 місяці тому

With cost and value, you have to consider residual value when you are done with them. Kirkland value will drop like a stone, mind you so do PXG as they are overpriced at purchase, and they change models so often. Also PXG make the ugliest clubs on the planet, too busy; i have tried them and had a fitting, didn’t really find them for me. All that being said, i watch the video with interest, but wouldn’t buy either. Kirkland against Caley, Takomo or Sub70 would be a better comparison, and the price points are not that different, residual values are. Also suggest you try the Krank drivers as used by Bryson, only $550 new and with a $150 introduction reduction so circa $400 which is a great price. They claim to bespoke each driver to the individual order, as they match build materials to swing speed, bespoke face thickness which makes sense. They also say roll and bulge is flattened by use, and players that swing over 100 flatten the face in under 20 shots?

Kirkland wedges are available in their stores. All these direct to consumer brands are great for 90% of golfers. The percentages of players that shoot in the 70's and under are very very low. Those are the players who may want to spend the big bucks for a set of expensive clubs, not high handicappers that play 10 rounds a year.

Go for an iron fitting, then look in 2nd hand market for a set with your specs, ping are good for this with the dot system, same with the rest of the bag.
To me being fit is the key. But lets be honest you could probably get the the Kirklands re shafted and still have enough left over for a set of wedges and some balls 😂😂

Kircklands look better to me .............. but I like a bladed iron look. .... however the top line........... they look awful, way too thick.
Hollow body irons don't intrest me tho, I like the fact my clubs tell me when I've hit it wrong or thing like a blade that makes your fingers sting).
I learned using blades and can't hit these kind of golf clubs, I still even use a 275cc driver, irons are mac gregors mb1025's

If you are a scratch golfer, you probably won’t see a massive difference. The thing is that someone who would play enough golf to be good at it would probably have no problem spending the money on nicer clubs. I’d be curious to see how these clubs would play for a mid to high handicapper who might benefit from the better engineering on the pricier clubs.

  • @Bikerz_rule
    @Bikerz_rule 3 місяці тому

To be honest, golfers who buy brand new clubs and can't even hit the ball probably - what's the point in paying over £1000 for irons? Is it for the aesthetic?
I went to play a round with my uncle a couple of years ago and we were waiting at the opening tee for a guy to tee off. He had a fancy tour bag and some shiny Callaway brand spanking new irons. His practice swings looked awful and he was obviously a novice. I said to my uncle that his clubs looked great, he responded with he may have nice clubs but let's see if he can play. He teed off with a 30 yard shank, didn't even pick up his tee, wheeled off with his tour bag of clubs to hit his 2nd.
My point is, your average golfer is going to play average and buying clubs worth £100s or £1000s isn't worth it, especially if you can't hit the ball consistently or apply course management to their game. If you want new clubs, just go to the direct to consumer - cheaper and quality. Unless of course you're playing twice a week and have a single digit handicap

Wishon Golf I believe made hollow body irons before anyone else. That would include Taylormade. In fact Wishon Golf still make hollow body irons. I'm about to purchase a set. We have to wonder if Taylormade is waging "Law-fare" against Costco just to reduce competition. Kirkland irons do cause a large amount of disruption in the golf iron market. So that question is on my mind. No one wants to litigate Tom Wishon. He has designed and built more golf irons than anyone in history and is a true master engineer.

  • @jimwampler6210

James, you can buy that feeling after all. 1700.00+ for the PXG with a logo as big as the Kirk's.
That cost does not include the cost of woods, wedges , putter and balls. For the average golfers that is both unnecessary and likely a waste of pounds or dollars. Like everything else in life, find the best value for the task at hand. Most major brands sell their "out of date" clubs at deep discounts and the D2C brands are an excellent choice. I am a fan of your channel and content, but you've flogged this subject long enough.

The TaylorMade lawsuit is going to have what we in the States call the "Streisand Effect". It will bring more (and favorable for CostCo) attention to a problem TaylorMade would like to g away, much as Barbara Streisand's lawsuit to suppress publicly obtained photographs of a property she owns on the California coast. Her lawsuit created huge interest and the exposure of her property went almost universal in the US.
For CostCo, any advertisement is good for the brand, especially when it is provided by a competitor.
