Is it fair to compare the Silverado 1500 ZR2 to the F-150 Raptor and Ram TRX, or is it fine as a stand-alone truck? Tell us which one fits your off-roading style in the comments below - edmu.in/38RQith

It’s in an odd no man’s land. It doesn’t compare to the Raptor or TRX for desert running (thankfully. Because, yes, the wide bodies look absolutely amazing on those two, they’re a headache to park in a city, and their width makes them impractical for most off road trails that more often than not, are narrow.). But you can’t compare it to the Tremor, Rebel or Tundra TRD because none of them have true locking front diffs, nor advanced suspension systems like the DSSV shocks. Plus two of them have sad sounding TT V6s. It’s neither fish nor fowl. I ordered one because I need a full size truck for adventuring and didn’t want a wide body or a gas guzzler supercharged V8, but I’m legitimately pissed that they made it difficult to simply add 35’s. That’s horse shit.

@@keewatin427 I see what your saying, but the tremor gets that torsion front diff that probably makes for a more dynamic experience in inclement weather. It also gets some other cool tech features that stack pretty closely to the Zr2. They all have their gimmicks, but the shock setup on the zr2 isn’t enough to forsake larger tires for me. I love the 6.2, but the fact that it’s slower than the ecoboost kills me. You can’t convince me that it’s worth the sticker price... and personally Idc how it sounds when it comes to high performance. I had a trail boss and liked it a lot, but I was able to flip it for a quick 5g’s... now I have a 5.0 v8 new f-150 and it’s really a solid value to build a truck on. The tech and locking diff alone make it a better experience than the trail boss in day to day driving.
I imagine the tremor to zr2 is a similar story. I just don’t see the value in buying either when the raptor is right there in cost.

    • @keewatin427
      @keewatin427 2 роки тому +1

@@itsmejongee if the Tremor had the Coyote 5.0 or the 7.3 Godzilla, I’d totally love it, but the torsen front diff isn’t a true locker, and the DSSV shocks are too advanced to hand wave away. I absolutely agree that the ZR2 costs $6000 to much, and I’m super pissed that I’m going to have to do some cutting to get 35’s to fit in the wheel wells, but I can live with that. And I’m sorry, I know the EcoBoosts are super powerful and have amazing gas mileage, but you have to live with that pathetic sounding engine note. Add all the trumpet bends to the exhaust you want, it still sounds lame next to a classic V8 burble. I’d take the hit on fuel costs to not feel like a jerk when I step on the gas pedal.

I ordered a ZR2 a few weeks ago - left Ford due to a flurry of 'wearable items' on an extended warranty truck - I love the REAL content you guys provide - albeit the ZR2 in this video didn't score great.
Let's face it though - MOST people aren't doing any serious off roading with any production truck - even the Raptors and TRX....it's all for on-road chest beating.
I pretty much LIVED in our local 'Mojave Dessert' friday night to sunday night for the last 10 years - hundreds of people daily, having a blast in the sand dunes/hills/trails....less than 10% are in ANY new truck...and when a new truck came in, people would all snicker and think he was a moron for bringing in a new truck....sadly judgemental. Regardless, no feelings were hurt, and the new trucks would do a lap or two - then leave.
The old 'beaters' would be there the whole weekend - 35" - 37" tires, lifted trucks, loud exhausts, people fixing and wrenching and generally having a great time.
I think the ZR2 is a good choice for me - likely to do a level kit and swap of tires - my first GM product since 2001 - Ford's service and maintenance costs are outrageous and a total scam. Fingers crossed the GM doesn't have the lifters issue or anything serious - otherwise, it'll be an embarrassment to face my Ford group. lolol

I think GM should have used the exact same formula as they did with the Colorado. Made it wider, diesel option, option for bigger tires, rock rails standard. They also should have tucked those shock towers inward like they did on the (next gen) Colorado ZR2. However, since this only a mid cycle refresh, they'll probably have a more aggressive version come next generation Silverado. Let's hope because in my opinion this is just a Trailboss with trick shocks and f/r lockers.

about the not recommending for the 35's is because they're coming out with off-road performance parts that will be able to handle those 35's. That's what the Hall Racing team has been racing with and they run 35's. Think of what they did for the Colorado

I must admit I was put off a bit because I really want to like this truck enough to purchase it. I have a 2020 Raptor and I have the itch for a change. However the things you pointed out are enough to make me pause and keep looking at other options. Great job.

That is my frustration with GM and as a current owner of a GMC Denali 1500, it seems i continue to get less for my $$$ with GM as they try to sell a quazi updates We will see if the ZR2 can launch with out any major problems and can compete in the real world for reliability , resell value and overall customer satisfation. I think there's nothing wrong with fitting the Territory MTs as standard; the TRX is fitted with those tires as well. If Chevy went with a slightly less aggressive tire, people would complain the tires aren't aggressive enough. Also, Chevy definitely couldn't afford to go with less aggressive rubber considering they're only 33s.

  • @kenstewart3365

No way should the ZR2 be compared with the TRX and Raptor. Edmunds says that all 3 are around the same price, but that simply isn't true from a practical perspective. While the ZR2 and Raptor have pretty close MSRPs, try getting a Raptor at MSRP. They are in such high demand that dealers are marking them up by $20k! And the TRX shouldn't be in the same conversation, because they start at a near $90k MSRP and dealers are marking them up to $115k because of the demand. The ZR2 is a practical, capable pickup. Its not a Raptor or a TRX competitor.

    • @krasnaludek298

13:22 I think it's amusing that the truck that they acknowledge is made for rock crawling should be delivered with "all-terrain tires", as a poor set of tires would compromise such rock-crawling ability. Sure, they could have fit 35's, but if the "Edmunds stance" is that all terrain tires would "expand the appeal", then why not just recommend buying a regular Silverado and adding all the off-road bits if you want them?

This seems more like a Ford Tremor competitor than a Raptor or TRX competitor. No way is Chevy saying they can compete with standard 37 inch tires on a raptor vs. 33's on the ZR2. This is a perfect compromise between a trail boss and a Raptor type truck. If this were Goldilocks it would be just right. I just bought the 2022 refreshed GMC AT4 and the same mud terrain tires come on that truck and they are LOUD and completely obnoxious. I will replace the tires immediately as they are horribly intrusive and save them for the few times when I need them. The new interior is a MAJOR step up and can now compete with Dodge and Ford.
