Honestly? The dynamic expressions of all of the animals (and people-) were so convincing, I wish that the narration itself wasn’t there. It is, however, and it was minimal so it doesn’t take away from the experience.

This movie holds a special place in my heart because of this. I'm neurodivergent and have non-verbal episodes. I find it sad how most people don't value other ways of communication and I have been dehumanized many times. "If it doesn't talk, it can't think or feel". It made me quite sad to hear him say he was worried you "wouldn't be able to get attached to the characters because they don't speak".

I’ve been riding horses for like 10 years of my life and it is indeed exhilarating to gallop full speed on a horse, it’s so much fun to do but also takes quite a bit of stamina because when you gallop for quite a bit you definitely get tired, but I also don’t have a good stamina so XD

One of the key things they talked about was they gave horses eyebrows which they do not in real life that way you could see the way they felt with out them actually speaking to each other. Highly recommend watching the bonus features if you have it on DVD.

I owned 2 horses when I grew up on a farm. One was too old to ride, but the other one I trained with Parelli, which is a method similar to what the native Americans used to use. I rode her without a saddle or a bridle, and we had a strong friendship. We used to play tag like Alec and the black stallion, and she would try to follow me inside my house.
People who used the traditional horse breaking methods would laugh at me and say I was lying, but if you look up Parelli horsemanship, you will see lots of other people with similar relationships with their horses.

In a horse herd there is a stallion with a bunch of mares (lady horses), where the stallion mates with all of them (minus his mother) so all of the horses in the herd, and now Rain as the latest addition, are Spirit's wives/concubines(?) and those little horses are most likely Spirit's children lol.

My uncle's parents had a small farm close to my hometown, and he took care of two horses. I truly love those gentle giants, it was so gratifying when they recognised me and followed me around as I played in the fields. We were very close friends, I adored helping to brush and feed them. I had only very few chances to ride horses again since them, and whenever I did I mostly held the reigns loose. You know, to let them set the pace and course. If they want to just stroll or go full gallop, that's okay. I don't think they get many chances to decide what they want to do whenever a human is on their backs, and you can learn a lot about their personalities by allowing them to do their own thing.

Great reaction!! It's incredible how clairvoyant you were throughout the watch, being able to predict even small details before they happened. I don't think that this necessarily implies the film is too predictable, but rather is more a testament to your instincts of good story-telling and being able to identify the best possible way the story could unfold. I also liked your final thoughts at the end of the watch. It's a crucial component to a good reaction video that many lazier reviewers skip entirely and jump right into their plugs without adding much of anything unique. Your reaction/review style is really good! I loved this movie as a tween and still do as an adult. Thanks for giving it a chance!

    I really like this movie.
The horses not talking felt more natural to me, and the actions and emotion being conveyed by the songs, the narration and expressions worked really well.
I especially commend them for finding a way to make the horse eyes very expressive (those eyebrows, man), the creators talk about it in the dvd bonus features and I found it facinating.

glad you enjoyed this movie! it was a big favourite growing up, especially since my grandparents had a big paddock out in the countryside with a bunch of horses. i grew up feeding, grooming and looking after them, and even rode them a couple times. horse riding is surprisingly really difficult, since you have to move your body in rhythm with the horse so you don't obstruct its own movements. a lot like how little creek has this amazing bond with rain, i feel like you definitely have to be in sync with them to ride one!
i've never ridden a horse at full speed, but i can tell you that even going at a half-run on a horse feels CRAZY fast, especially since you're so high up. they're amazing beasts, and i feel like this movie really shows well how intelligent and powerful they can be. great video!

I think it's better when they don't talk because it shows that not every story needs dialogue to be told well. I find this even more compelling, instead of things being told to you it's shown to you, it allows you to come up with your own idea of the story or the personality of the horse which you don't see much of (it also grabs your attention more). It makes it that much more impressive especially since it's animated so every transition, cinematography and sketch has to count (also I find this innovative way of storytelling just prove how passionate the writers were). The music was *chefs kiss*, it was a useful optional form of media that they used well to open a new chapter in the story, kind of like with "Sound The Beagle" it was a signal to the audience of Spirit's reignited drive to be free which made the viewers excited to anticipate how that would play out. I could go on and on about this but I'll spare you the lengthy story, haha. This movie was that childhood movie that I rewatched 100 times so I spent a lot of time analysing it 🤣. I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊Thank you for the reaction!

8:50 due to the uniforms and the wooden forts, this is when it took place (at least around the 1700s) when the European settlers ( bad apples of the group) just arrived in the "new world". Mostly the British, they started building their homes, and installing the railroad for world trade businesses with both the "Natives" and the European traders back at their "own home". I would say before the civil war or at least the start of it.

I don’t know much about Canadian history, but America had a concept called “Manifest Destiny” that encouraged people to move west after the Louisiana purchase. It boils down to thinking the expanding to the pacific was a god given right. It severely impacted native tribes and I think this movie beautifully showcases the villainy of colonialism.

I always loved this movie as a kid. I really appreciated the lack of horse dialogue - made it seem less childish, in a way, and it also meant that the animators really had to bring it when it came to crafting body language and facial expressions to get across all that they needed to say. I think they succeeded! Melding real horse body language with gestures we recognize must have been challenging, but they did it. Cheated with the eyebrows, but they had to, haha. Plus, the MUSIC. Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams really pulled out all the stops.
I had horses up until my early twenties! I really miss them. I had a solid bond with my mare - while not NEARLY as strong, ofc, for a time ours was a little like that between Rain and Little Creek - that scene where he’s playing with her always reminds me of how I used to play tag with her in the pasture.
Galloping full speed on horseback is one of the most exhilarating feelings ever. Especially bareback! The connection you feel to the incredible powerhouse beneath you is insane - if the two of you have a good bond of trust, you can really communicate and feel like one creature, wind in your face, landscape whizzing by, pounding hoofbeats, breathing in tandem...way better than a motorcycle, though that’s the closest I can come to making a comparison - just 100% adrenaline. Pure freedom.

I actually LOVE the fact that horses couldn't talk. It's a very simple and straightforward way of telling that their worlds are WAY different: humans and horses cannot speak to each other, thus they can't express matters about freedom, desire, or anything. They can't comprehend each other by nature, and humans (white ones, in this film) are not willing to see through that. Spirit not being able to talk is what makes it's bond with Little Creek more important: the fact that they are willing to understad each other even with the language barriers ended with them fully knowing the other one and the way each one expressed themselves (and, therefore, fully respeting each other (take for example the 'I see you' sentence from Avatar)). At the end, even the Captain (or whatever he was haha) understood Spirit, because he literally saw him risking his own life just because he wanted to be free. He didn't ask Spirit or needed to talk to him. He just saw that. And he respected it (his untalked determination), that's why he let him go. He did not have the need to speak to express that (sometimes a gesture is worth a thousand words).
I hope I expressed myself, english is not my first language haha. I LOVE your videos!

Ok, since no one else has mentioned it, I will. Hans Zimmer did the *score* for this movie, but the songs were written and performed by Bryan Adams, *Canadian* guitarist, singer, composer, record producer, and photographer. Adams has sold between 75 and 100 million records and singles worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Adams was the most played artist on Canadian radio in the 2010sand has had 25 Top 15 singles in Canada, and a dozen or more in each of the US, UK, and Australia. He is a Grammy, Juno, American Music Award, People Magazine, Oscar winner, and four-time Golden Globe Nominee.
On the DVD special features, there is a wonderful behind the scenes doc that shows Adams standing in the studio, listening to Horner's soundtrack and the explanation of what the scene is about, and he closes his eyes and starts vocalizing with the music, and then coming up with lyrics on the spot, finding the hook of the song and conveying the emotion the production team just told him about. And they were blown away by how quickly he wrote the songs.

The behind the scenes video that always stuck with me was that they gave him eyebrows to make him more expressive even though horses don’t have eyebrows, i feel like if they made the horses talk it would kind of infantilize the whole thing. As it is the expressions are so good even small children can understand all the silent communication between the characters so it’s not too hard for them and not too childish for the adults.

I've watched this movie countless times, and rewatching it again I'm spotting things I didn't the other times. Like when he says he believed he could fly, the shadow of the eagles wings hover over him and make it look like he has wings. Tiny details like that really make a movie rewatchable, there's always something new to find.
