All women need to be conscripted as well in all countries for equality freedom accountability and responsibility. I think the "community service" should be actual work and help the country though most of these programs are mindless busy work like picking up trash in the same area that 1000 other people are picking up the same trash to the point where there is no actual work or labor getting done really just ends up being a waste of money and more state bureaucracy. Ukraine should copy Russia send your convicts to the front lines in exchange for time off their sentences every year on the front line is 10 years off your sentence.

Apart from the 200k active personal before 2022, Nato previously trained 120k (that is apart from the 50k that are being trained today as the report states)... Send the f16s to the next life as well, cause Ukraine is supposed to have over 320k trainned personal in this life but they seem to have disappeared...

I'm from the Netherlands and was in the military when it was still mandatory. Not everyone got what it takes to be a soldier. I've seen guys who couldn't wait to leave the unit on some minor medical issue. I fear that in current days there will be even more.
The Dutch military was a poor yardstick. It had lost its mojo long before conscription was finally abolished.

Moral would be horrible if conscripted soldiers were to invade another country. However you could get good moral defending your allies and fighting at their soil.
Just look at the moral difference in american soldiers in WW2 vs Vietnam war. Both wars had drafts. But Vietnam war had horrible moral compared.
Cause few understood why the hell they were in Vietnam.
But id totally understand why id have to take a trip to Ukraine to secure borders against the authoritarian Russia.

That is totally different world. Germany was an axis country who wanted to dominate all of Europe on racist world view. Today Germany is a western advanced economy and has only aspirations for peace in Europe, for all nations to respect each other and never go to pointless war over nothing. Europe must be peaceful but they want to be ready in case Russia invades as they have done over and over again in the last 20 years, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Georgia, Ukraine, it is a long history of war.

There is so much that could or can be done with Compulsory Service. Look at the UK. 30k new recruits for each of the three Services. Navy, Air, Army. Then, include Compulsory Service within the Territorial Army. All this doubles up as training and service. But of course, I would include all new arrivals to the UK as a Compulsory Service to gain the right to settle in the UK. Thats just Compulsory military service. Now I add an alternative Compulsory Community Service. Fire, Water, Rail, Healthcare, the works, the list is endless. But look at it as Training and Services. From 18 to 21. - You level school or college at 18, and you enter your paid service until 21. Newcomers enter Services upon landing, or back you go.

Europe is sending the wrong message. We may force you to serve . Then say, we may send some troops to Ukraine. It is one thing to ask someone to risk their life to save their country or NATO allies. They may not want to risk dying for Ukraine.

i did compulsory service. it can be very useful if the young recruits were given first aid classes etc. otherwise it's a waste of time, just like my service. It would be a good idea to make the servcive mandatory for the new citizens.

Yeah it gives skills for life that will make people better. Many people go in to military service without a path in life and come out with a clear idea of what they want to do, and that's really is great and it makes people stronger overall and feel like they are part of a community as a country

100 years ago most European nations had huge armies. By not having them for 70 years and letting US do all the dirty work, EU got the fantastic liberal and rich societies they enjoy with "free" everything. While we Americans now have the highest wealth inequality since the 1920s. My daughter got into Baylor University, but she can't go. At $80K a year , even the $40K in scholarships she got isnt enough. Oh and I am in top 10% of US wage earners. Imagine how dim the Sun is for our bottom half....but we gots lots of tanks and warships.

The USA can't do that unless there is a clear threat of war becasue the size would be very large, we are talking about 30 million people so that is way too much for peace time. The USA had low numbers because of a strong economy but that is slowing down to fight inflation so that should boost the army hiring, but we shall see.

It does not harm to be ready but a draft in the USA is not going to happen unless things get very serious as that means 30 million boots which can only be justified and financed in real war time. Europe is more agile so they can have a draft army that is much smaller and can pick and choose who they want in service so that is a smart move.

There are enough former soldiers from NATO countries as volunteers in Ukraine. Why not enroll them in a „foreign NATO legion“ payed by NATO countries, that also fulfills the tasks to train soldiers in Ukraine. I am sure they would welcome direct help from the west…Many of them spend their own money to do all that.

Conscription makes sense to prepare the population for crazy Ivan's unanticipated next move. His use of tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine would most assuredly provoke a NATO response. But the training in conscription should be within the context of launching a 21st century techno war and should be accompanied by a ramp up in the production of technological military hardware with appropriate training.

Why would the use of tactical nukes against Ukraine provoke a response from NATO (a supposedly defensive alliance)? If NATO is plying Ukraine with ever increasingly sophisticated weapons isn't that inviting such an eventuality? Escalating warfare with a nuclear power is not particularly wise especially when the aforesaid is now signalling a preparedness to use such weapons!
Fun fact: Crimea has never in it's History been more that about 25% ethnically Ukrainian (currently it's ~7%).
