Great video! Thank you for sharing! Slot limits don't make sense with such of healthy population. We have the same BS in Florida with Black Drum ( 14''-- 24'' ) and Red Drum ( 18'' -- 27'' ) Red Drum can not even be caught with a spear. Don't pay much attention to the stupid comments. Keep it up the great work!!!
Cheers mate, our species similar to your Drum actually have a release Mortality close to 100% as the suffer from Barotrauma so Catch and Release is counter productive and slot limits just don’t work
Striped bass have under 10% release mortality. Lower with quick release. These are old fish at that size. The population issue is a shortage of young fish, stocks are forecast years out. I've caught dozens of slot and overslot fish this year and not a single underslot, it's concerning. I live in and fish NYC, this also isn't NYC. It's the east end of Long Island if not Rhode Island waters. Don't mind that this is pre regulation footage but be accurate... these fishing spots are several hours from NYC and slots for striped bass are necessary. They're our only inshore trophy fish and highly highly pressured.
@@break0nthr0ugh I spearfish in nyc. I see a lot of under slot stripers. I see some very large ones. I now prefer to take bluefish and porgies, which are a lot more challenging. Stripers only when nothing else is around. With blackfish they seem the most common and abundant fish, so I do not really understand why they are so regulated. I find them also really easy to take spearfishing. The biggest challenge is assessing the legal size. Bluefish swim a lot faster and never stop. Porgies and sheepsheads are way more skittish and nervous and you can’t get them as close.
@stefpix I don't disagree. But the young of year they are concerned about are not just under slot they're the ones that aren't even schoolies yet. I haven't caught one under 16 inches in a couple years now.

Stripped bass a migrating fish the head north to Canada then come back down.Thats one thing good with the USA the fish regulations are so strict that’s why fish industry here is so healthy
This was obviously in 2017 long before the Slot change and the fishery was already incredible. I wonder what difference the Slot size has made and I also wonder about the release mortality on these large fish when C&R, similar fish here have really high release mortality. But even 30% release mortality means a session where a fisherman catches and releases 10 fish they have killed same number as we did. Been some incredible research done here in Aus recently filming fish swim off strongly and then die on the bottom filmed with drones
@@Spearfishing-Downunder I see so many striped bass and blackfish when I spearfish in nyc. But they are so regulated. When the season open for blackfish I see only the small ones in shore. The large ones go off shore in deeper water. I believe commercial fisheries have less limits on stripers. For me the most fun fish is the bluefish. And I got once a Spanish mackerel but saw them only once in the water. Also striped bass meat does not conserve well even if frozen. The grey Triggerfish has really good meat. It is not regulated, and some take too many. They are too easy to get spearfishing and I see less and less. I wonder how it can be assessed the mortality of catch and release fish. Where I go spearfishing there are many anglers. Rarely I see dead fish at the bottom. An issue is the fishing line left in the ocean when the hook gets stuck on the mussels beds.

Hey Tim, the majority of those spots were in Rhode Island not NY. Point Judith harbor is beautiful though!
When did you take this trip?
Hey mate
Cheers for that
Was actually a few years ago.
I'm curious, how deep are you guys spearfishing? And what is the deepest you go to fish?
This was only from 15-25 meters
@@Spearfishing-Downunder awesome 🤩
Awesome I live near new york
This was filmed in 2017, size limits have changed since then.
@@break0nthr0ugh at that lighthouse, I know it’s a long time ago, but there was lots of really small ones as well as medium sized stripes
11:21 😮😮😮😮
Great video and diving! I noticed Hal shot the BSB lefty and the striper righty?
Cheers mate
Yeah I noticed that too, I definitely need to ask him about that. I never noticed till editing
Great vid. We also get stripper in freshwater.
Cheers mate
They are an incredible fish!!
Strippers on freshwater are not on UA-cam… have to go to porn hub for that stuff.
Wait, do spearfisherman not have to abide by our federal slot limit?

@@matt9822 the striped bass limits I don’t think are set by the US federal government, but by a commission of several US states on the eastern seaboard
You cannot fish stripes in federal waters
@@Spearfishing-Downunderyea right, you telling me you waited 7 years to upload this video foh
@@chrism4544 yeah mate, I’ve been filming for over 10 years and just launched our channel properly a year ago. This was the last time I was in America. I live in Aus
Today 5 Aug. going to ocean dip in NSW Australia ocean temp 17.2 C 🥶 Doing The Ice Man regime. 🙄 I'll try Spearfishing when I can afford a chainmail suit. Wow what a fish, keep a head for taxidermy trophy.
How long did it take to train your lungs to that capacity ? Awesome job by the way. I head out on my buddies contender during striper season off the Sandy Hook marina and boy do we have a blast. .
I’ve been diving for around 20 years
@@Spearfishing-Downunder awesome
Love diving montauk
Yep incredible place!!
The largest shark ever caught was off montauk.
OP said this is from a few years ago, so the slot wasnt in place. Pitch forks down boys
But he also said the limit was 1 fish, i remember before the slots it was atleast 2 fish per person so something isnt adding up 🤷🏽♂️
@@eryckb_ I know it was 2 fish in MA but he's in NY. I don't know what it was before the rules change (im in RI).
You Aussie boys better follow the rules! You know we Americans take this shit serious.
so a youtube producer who is always searching to create content waits 7 years to post this??? doesnt pass the smell test.
Little bit of competition going on here
Would never have guessed that New York had such amazing fishery management.
They have done incredible with thier management and so cool to dive there!!
Did u guys see any sharks down there?
Does anyone else have problems with his videos appearing in their subscription feed?
Posting this video in 2024 is the least to say intimidating for the NY spearo community that cannot hunt stripped bass anymore.
surprised you still dive with that guy after he took your big Red
Nah I gave it to him, I just didn’t realise it was 18kg 😂🤣
One of my best mates, really awesome guy
I wanna do halibut in Norway man !!!!
See any old slot machines down there
Blackfish was never legal in New York State in August.
Black fish on the Barbie mate
Lmfao nice job uploading a video spearing 40 plus inch fish. I bet fish & wildlife is gonna love this one

Recreational divers are allowed to take striped bass between 28-31 inches. How did you get approval to take such large fish?
Actually a trip from a few years back, this was prior to slot limits
where was this spot specifically?

🎉🎉🎉🎉😂❤❤❤❤❤
Under a hour ⬇️
Awesome feat. Congrats on a wild ass accomplishment. Don’t know if y’all have different regs as spearfishermen but from Maryland to Maine striper limit is 28”-31” and 1 per person
Regs are the same for spearing. Commercial regs are >35". I'm sure the boat had a commercial license. Unless this footage is very old
Footage is older, precovid should have said it in filming. Have added now to the description
When you coming to South Africa?😃
Definitely something I’d love to do in the future!!!!
3:10 How much meters was actually that? How much feet?
About 90 feet

You would also like the southeast coast spearfishing usa
We will definitely plan to get there in the future
Where is that lighthouse in the video located?
Not real sure mate, was a long time ago we headed out of Montauk harbour headed east from memory
Montauk is great
Such a beautiful area!!
Hey Tim the legal slot size for strip bass is 28"-31" The fish you shot seem far in excess of that?
Correct: slot is 28-31" those fish are way over slot sized and should not have been harvested!!!!
Hey guys this was before that change in regulations regarding slot size.
Was a little while ago
Suggest you note that in the description Tim! Otherwise you are going to get some negative attention from the locals that think it was new footage.
