  • The Ryzen 9 7950X3D promises to be the best of both worlds - offering content creation performance almost on par with the 7950X but gaming performance much higher. But does it achieve that? In this video Gordon goes over multiple content creation benchmarks and compares the 7950X3D's results to AMD's Ryzen 9 7950X as well as Intel's Core i9-13900K and 13900KS. He also covers the power usage presented by each chip under all core and single core workloads.

7950x owner here.. i am super satisfied with my chip.. whatever i throw at it.. just work.. Undervolt it or not.. and all comes to that... what you focus on with your pc.. Personaly i think no matter which one you take ( x3d variant or not ) you will be satisfied.. I think x3d chips will be worth buying maybe next gen or in 2 gens.. i really think in 2 gens amd will improve it drasticly and i think this gen they just little bit playing with it to see what they can do..Maybe i am wrong, idk.. I am a boomer so i like to see raw performance from the start to the end from all cores.. than to wonder which cores are active, which are not.. and software to dictate me which part of my cpu will be used and which one it will shut down.. but i must admit it's nice concept, glad we have that option with x3d lineups.. In the end of the day, look up the price and ask yourself if is worth it.. because both cpu's in games will give you more or less same thing...For me idc if i will get 150fps or 180fps .. in certain game.. both are super enjoyable.. and let's be honest, if you going for this chip.. you are 4090 or 7900xtx buyer.. so anyway you will have amazing experience.... i care how many things i can run in background while i am gaming... or working... or maybe both... ( lol ) and all to work great... that's the thing 😀

I'm working daily on my Threadripper 1950x with 2x2080Ti for the last 5 years. Threadripper is still decent in rendering bigger scenes which can't fit in the 22GB VRAM. However that 7950x would absolutely crush 1950x in every scenario. I'm looking mostly for the improvement in a single core performance as most programs I use benefit from that. I think that most 3D/2D graphic designers would find RTX 4090 and 7950x with 128GB DDR5 an ideal setup for their work. Certainly the best bang for their buck.

That won’t be possible, according to gamer nexus while gaming the chip will be disabling non cache CCD with enabled cache CCD. So it seems if you open a game and a productivity program, it’ll dump everything on the cache CCD. Let’s see because AMD is relying on Xbox bar in PC to determine which program need more cache. That is a lot more harder and riskier problem compare to intel’s big core or little core. Intel can use thread director and put small task on small core and big task on big core. But for AMD determining cache dependency of each task is very challenging, it’s a much harder problem to solve. There’s literally an entire field in computer engineering trying to find ways to assign cache to cache dependent tasks right now.😅

@@slimjimjimslim5923 Shoulda showed that example, so if you are in 'gaming mode' everything is thrown at the stacked die. For example, I fired up Cinebench R23 using 4-threads and Chrome running WebXprt 4 and it goes to the stacked die. Generally, as much as possible is thrown to the stacked part. If, however, you run Cinebench R23 using 16 threads, the extra work is thrown onto the second die.
One problem with trying to do multi-tasking benchmarks is can be extremely inconsistent in obtaining reliable results. It's probably easier with say, two fixed workloads Blender+Cinebench or POV-Ray + Blender but gaming+work can be inconsistent from run to run or Tuesday results to Thursday results.

@@slimjimjimslim5923 The vast majority of gamers do not need high-core count CPUs. We've said that for a long, long time. A Ryzen 5 and Core i5 is more than enough. Put your money into GPU and monitor instead. The 7950X3D is, however, a good 'best of both worlds' chip that AMD promised.
With 5800X3D, it was generally good for gaming (not always) but would actually be slower than 5800X due to lower clocks and when cache didn't matter. It was also significantly slower than a 5950X in multi-core performance. There are indeed people who need/want more core performance with Vcache for gaming. 7950X3D largely does that.
But no, a 95% gamer does not need to pay a premium for more cores. They also don't need to pay for high-end motherboard, RGB, or super fancy case either. Need isn't the same as want though so people should build around their own parameters and be happy with it.

@@pcworld I'd be happy to collaborate to help create a benchmark suite that has easily reproducible compilations for a good benchmark if you're interested. Kinda hard to do that over YT comments.
But off the top of my head, we have the basic use cases of:
      - Web development
      - Most often this is single threaded bound
      - Compile React source code
      - Maybe find a big-ish web project and build that
      - Run serial/parallel browser integration tests
      - Rust builds
      - Shows off parallel compilation performance
      - Common builds
      - large open source projects make for good benefits because they are non trivial
      - build the Linux kernel
      - build Firefox or Chrome
      - build nginx
Would probably be worth doing these builds on Linux and using a RAM drive to avoid I/O bottle necks
Then comparing that data to other compiling monsters. No one seems to include the M1/M2, which a lot of companies are forcing engineers to use because Apple says they are fast and no one disputes it haha
I'd imagine software engineers are a target for this top end CPU segment but no one gives us love 😂
Idle power is particularly interesting because we sit at idle for 30 minutes before running a 5+ minute 100% all core build, rinse and repeat. No point in using 100w at idle if all you're doing is messing with a text editor.
