      For most artists he seems to take time to look at the lyrics and analyze them and for some reason he just didn’t bother to for this video? Granted; I don’t think lyrics are Greta Van Fleet’s greatest strength but there are some great lines from this album that he missed

    • @nonamebrand.1579
      @nonamebrand.1579 5 місяців тому +25

      the thing that kind of annoyed me is that he said the lyrics lacked substance but then continued to only glance at the actual lyrics. I don't blame him tbh because the first time I listened to the album I had no clue what he was saying and the songs all kind of blurred into eachother, but as soon as I listened to each song separately it became one of my favorite albums.

    i so appreciate you giving this a shot! They are for sure a very fun band :) i do have to say though- the lyrics are actually an incredibly important part of the full experience. TBAGG is a super conceptual album. and while having to diving into a bunch of lore may not be to everyone’s taste, the lyrics are not to be dismissed.

      he’s reading the lyrics tho, he was on genius for most, if not all, of the album trying to make up what the main singer was saying. i do think he tried, but it didn’t interest him enough

    troy i’m so serious right now you’ve gotta see them live. it is one of the coolest experiences ever (ESPECIALLY light my love). also while it’s not the most straightforward album it’s so much fun analyzing the lyrics and breaking them down. they love being cryptic because they want people to form their own meanings for their songs so that they mean something different for everyone. I’m really glad you listened to them though, and i highly recommend watching their red rocks performance from on youtube. also since you liked light my love PLEASE listen to flower power 🙏🏼

I haven't listened to their other two albums yet because I'm still trying to remember what each song on TBAGG sounds like lmfao. to me… it seems like greta van fleet is a live band more than anything. the boys are clearly talented and these songs feel like they were made to be played for large crowds hence the *many* guitar solos and josh’s booming voice. if i was at a festival and passed by this stage i would definitely stop to watch! however for me, sitting and listening to one of their albums all the way through like this just does NOT work. many of their songs don’t feel like the members feed off of each other and mesh, it feels like they all went into separate studios to record their parts, sat in front of a laptop to try and fit them all together, then when they were done said to each other “sounds cool” and went on to the next one. i think when a greta song works, it WORKS, but most of their stuff unfortunately is lost on me.

  • @staceytobin8350

    imo if you're getting into gvf you should listen to their older hits first like Safari Song, BSR, and Highway Tune just to get the gist of where they started and then you should listen to The Battle at Garden's Gate to see how far they've come. TBAGG is a very intense album and I feel like it can be a lot to listen to front to back (sometimes). I'd be curious to see if he'd like Starcatcher more than tbagg. This review confused me bc he'd be vibing and then say he didn't like it LOL.

    I’m glad you gave it a chance (looked like you were having fun at times tho). I love them and I really love diving into the lyrics (I think most people wouldn’t). I like the challenge it gives of trying to piece together the story through unorthodox lyrics. There’s a lot of room for interpretation so they really leave it up to your imagination to find your own answers. I DO think they have substance, but maybe not everyone will see it that way. Although I will say I wish he enunciated the words better, definitely hard to decipher until you’ve read the lyrics.

    The highlights of this album are definitely Heat Above, Built by Nations, Broken Bells, and Stardust Chords imo. I agree the album as a whole is lacking structure and it doesn’t really have a flow to carry you through the album. They started much more zeppelin-esque with songs like Highway Tune and Black Smoke Rising and I think this album was them starting to feel out their own identity and style with their music. Their latest album ‘Starcatcher’ that you mentioned in the beginning is supposed to be exploring a more esoteric energy and bring in some southern influence to the music. I haven’t gone thru the whole album yet but I LOVED Meeting the Master so I’m interested to see how their sound and style mature as they get more experience in the industry.

Last year they released two albums that I'm loving, Dark fighter and Lightbringer. You will choose which one to listen to (just know that in my opinion they are really connected). Great video anyway, and pardon me for my grammar, if I made any mistake

    Their first album to me is my favorite. Clear direction, folksy-rock. Love it. Headbangers.

    This is such a great review. You were super honest and gave valid critiques while staying open minded. I totally understand the viewpoint listening to tbagg as the opener to gvf tho. This album is definitely a showcase of Jake on guitar whereas other albums like Starcatcher, showcase the keys and drums more. Tbagg is not a super in your face conceptual album. The band prefers to offer over-arching themes and leave the rest to personal interpretation, which is why it’s important to dissect the lyrics, but understandable that not everyone is gonna do that. I also think listening to it all the way through is definitely a lot for the ears so I always listen to it in chunks lol.

    a lot of what you said is perfectly valid, except for saying they talk about a whole lot of nothing. wish you would've dived into their lyrics a bit more! the songs would make wayyyy more sense, i promise!!

    When they first got bigger I liked them okay but they kinda fall into the trap of every song sounding similar. Josh’s vocals slap but I think if they went more of an 80s pop route and no so zepelin then it could be fresher

    Day 3 of begging you to listen to Olivia Deans album "Messy" and watching some of her live videos.
    Messy was shortlisted for Mercury Prize. And Olivia was recently annouced as BBC's artist of the year.

    GVF just as good live as in the studio.. I flew up to Seattle from SOCAL to see these guys. With high expectations they by far exceeded everything I was hoping for.

    They definitely went all in on this album. Every song has this big-sound-vibe with TONS of guitar-riffs and solos, which can make it all a bit bland when you listen to it alone in one sitting and I actually didn't like like half of the songs the first time I heard them.
    But then something changed when I saw them live.
    The songs get to have their own space and life on a live stage, and you just can't help getting totally sucked in.
    If you thought this was a bit much - which I totally understand - I recommend you give their new album a try. It's very different and not so 'big-sounding' - Josh doesn't scream as much for one thing...

    I agree with Troy here. I saw them live and they were absolutely incredible but the first half of the album before Light My Love is set up all extremely similar. Also art is subjective y'all, we've been here before lol before y'all come after Troy.

    Well it's about damn time! They're a much better band to see live. I've seen them live 7 times (#8 coming up in May). My Way, Soon is the one song on this album that doesn't belong. The only thing that song is good for is being used for an RV commercial. I'm really surprised an RV company didn't pick it up. And I agree with you that Jake's guitar solos start sounding like just more of the same. The one exception is Broken Bells. They're capable of so much more, sonically - blues, jazz, folk. They insist on complete creative control, but they need a strong producer (Greg Kurstin produced this one, believe it or not) to tell them it's okay to showcase their other talents. As fans, we'd love to hear it!

    I saw them live on the starcatcher tour and it was an epic production and great vocals etc - but I’m ngl…we left early. They had a huge guitar only solo and drum only solo back to back in the first third, which was sick but totaled almost 15? Minutes! But after the B stage half way THEY DID IT AGAIN.
    They completely lost the crowd on pacing and everything started to sound the same. It was a Wednesday night so no one was drunk and people started to leave. I heard they do encores too and I absolutely would not have been able to stay for that.
    I agree with your criticism of the lack of diction and guitar solos on every song…my favorites are on different albums plus light my love obv.

      oh my god thank you. i’ve been to over 60 concerts and they were by far the worst one. Josh kept leaving 5 times, 10+ minutes each and the terrible instrumental solos were just so bad. many left early, the concert was over 2 hours (normally 1 hour) long and the energy was GONE after the first 20 minutes. soooo disappointing.

    • @racheltopping9422
      @racheltopping9422 5 місяців тому +6

      I feel like you don't get rock music then. 10 minute solos are part of that genre. They are all instrumentally gifted and all the solos were amazing, I do think that some could be a minute or 2 shorter but was such a great experience. They were easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

      @@racheltopping9422 i’m a rock fan and that’s mainly what i listen to forever - so i also know when solos are great and when they’re not. i loooove a good guitar solo, especially live. but with greta, the guitar riffs are even messy in the recordings. there’s a hand full of songs that are genuinely good.
