For most artists he seems to take time to look at the lyrics and analyze them and for some reason he just didn’t bother to for this video? Granted; I don’t think lyrics are Greta Van Fleet’s greatest strength but there are some great lines from this album that he missed
the thing that kind of annoyed me is that he said the lyrics lacked substance but then continued to only glance at the actual lyrics. I don't blame him tbh because the first time I listened to the album I had no clue what he was saying and the songs all kind of blurred into eachother, but as soon as I listened to each song separately it became one of my favorite albums.

TBAGG is a super conceptual album. and while having to diving into a bunch of lore may not be to everyone’s taste, the lyrics are not to be dismissed.

I have been to a gvf concert and I really enjoy their music, the concert was an out of body experience I smelt colors and heard sights. Their feet were out and their drummer had on a see through shirt, they are very good preformers and their music tickles my wee little brain
i’m glad you finally reacted to GVF! sorry you didn’t enjoy it the most :/ i actually don’t listen to rock like at all, and i love their stuff! i saw them in concert back in march and it was such a great show! and josh sounds just as good live, he blows my mind fr
I have just recently found your page and I am LOVING going back and finding your older videos to watch to cheer me up. I love Greta. and everyone around me loves greta, and it’s so cool to hear another perspective!! def wish you liked it more but i get it!!
to me… it seems like greta van fleet is a live band more than anything. the boys are clearly talented and these songs feel like they were made to be played for large crowds hence the *many* guitar solos and josh’s booming voice. if i was at a festival and passed by this stage i would definitely stop to watch! however for me, sitting and listening to one of their albums all the way through like this just does NOT work. many of their songs don’t feel like the members feed off of each other and mesh, it feels like they all went into separate studios to record their parts, sat in front of a laptop to try and fit them all together, then when they were done said to each other “sounds cool” and went on to the next one. i think when a greta song works, it WORKS, but most of their stuff unfortunately is lost on me.
I enjoy their first album more, but they are incredible live. Your reactions had me cracking up- I may enjoy this band but your criticisms are valid! Your maniacal laugh at the end really made it for me 😂
I honestly feel the same way- everyone's saying "see them live" but if i'm not a fan of their music in my home i don't think i'll like it live lol. I think that they're talented, josh has a killer voice for sure. but its just not my thing, and i respect troy for being honest abt it lmao.
I’m a huge fan of them and I’m obsessed with their music, but I can completely understand why you wouldn’t like them and it was really interesting to see this point of view
Great video Troy! As a child of parents who grew up in the 70’s, I love old rock. I feel pretty similar about GVF as you. Easy to listen to at a bar, won’t skip it in a playlist… but I’m not seeking it out regularly
This video was so funny, chat and Troy were cracking me up multiple times lol also shoutout to whoever chatted “I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock” because that made me choke on my water
I think you got into this with a pop mind, this band and album is just incredible and I'm really sad you just didn't get that. The guitarists are incredibly talented and capable, just like the drummer and singer.
as a musician and singer i absolutely adore greta van fleet. i grew up listening to classic rock (i grew up with my grandparents). i saw gvf live in 2022 and it was insane. being around jazz musicians and rock musicians you gotta understand what the flow state is. and honest to god their entire concert was a flow state. i hope you give them another chance!
You should listen to the "go farther in lightness" album by 'Gang of Youths' its a really cool kinda alternative rock album by an Australian band. so many cool songs, I think you'd love it :)
i love that you gave this a shot!! it would be great if you did a video on their earlier albums too, i think based on this reaction you would like them more. “from the fires” would be fun!
I like Starcatcher better but this album is solid. I’m most surprised by troys criticism of age of machine. The lyrics are perfectly dystopian and jakes guitar solo has the perfect ugly edge for the societal criticism the song perfectly conveys. It’s deeper most including Troy may appreciate.
Their first album From The Fires is amazing! It's more specific songs, I suggest you to listen to Safari Song, Highway Tune, Black Smoke Rising, and You're the One
I love GVF soo much and can listen to them for hours and not get tired and I actually enjoy Josh’s screams BUT there’s a lot of valid points in this video that are making me realise why people might not like them!!
All I do is look for this mans opinion on my music taste and I hate that he dislikes them. I can see where he is coming from with the lyric perspective but they are more a band to listen to and enjoy the vibes then read the lyrics. They are absolutely amazing live and easily one of the best concerts live but their music recorded is still amazing like how does he not like this??? I feel like he has liked worse artists so...
Music is subjective, he’s pointing out plenty of things he really likes about it too, he doesn’t have to like everything *like he’s just giving his opinion
it's albums like this i'm so thankful that i barely register lyrics when i listen to music, sure good lyrics make me like songs more but i love just listening for vibes and not for stories. give me a nice bass line and a fun little melody and i'll listen to your music for hours
i wish he would have done some research on the band, their dynamic, and their style like he does w other artists. the lyrics and story is incredible if you understand it
to say there is “no substance” with the lyrics without actually even trying to analyze the lyrics is crazy. gvf lyrics have the most depth out of any rock band i know besides Rush
GVF is one of my favorite bands ever and getting to hear them live (twice) will be a highlight in my life. It’s not for everyone but they are incredibly talented. This video gave me such fun insight.
They definitely went all in on this album. Every song has this big-sound-vibe with TONS of guitar-riffs and solos, which can make it all a bit bland when you listen to it alone in one sitting and I actually didn't like like half of the songs the first time I heard them. But then something changed when I saw them live. The songs get to have their own space and life on a live stage, and you just can't help getting totally sucked in. If you thought this was a bit much - which I totally understand - I recommend you give their new album a try. It's very different and not so 'big-sounding' - Josh doesn't scream as much for one thing...
I think you would’ve loved listening/watching the red rocks show!! Great mix of all their original albums before TBAGG and Starcatcher-and, honestly, it’s the “sound” that caught everyone’s attention to begin with!
I feel like this is a perfect example of, some music is just not for everyone. I personally really enjoyed this album and so do a lot of people but again everyone does have their own prefrence and that is ok.
The highlights of this album are definitely Heat Above, Built by Nations, Broken Bells, and Stardust Chords imo. I agree the album as a whole is lacking structure and it doesn’t really have a flow to carry you through the album. They started much more zeppelin-esque with songs like Highway Tune and Black Smoke Rising and I think this album was them starting to feel out their own identity and style with their music. Their latest album ‘Starcatcher’ that you mentioned in the beginning is supposed to be exploring a more esoteric energy and bring in some southern influence to the music. I haven’t gone thru the whole album yet but I LOVED Meeting the Master so I’m interested to see how their sound and style mature as they get more experience in the industry.
I love GVF and even though some of your thoughts break my heart, I appreciate your opinion. I’ll be honest to and say some of my favourite songs are the ones that had to slowly build on me so maybe that’s the same for you It seriously, see them live and welcome to the peaceful army🌻
a lot of what you said is perfectly valid, except for saying they talk about a whole lot of nothing. wish you would've dived into their lyrics a bit more! the songs would make wayyyy more sense, i promise!!
I agree with Troy here. I saw them live and they were absolutely incredible but the first half of the album before Light My Love is set up all extremely similar. Also art is subjective y'all, we've been here before lol before y'all come after Troy.
as a massive tbagg fan, you’re actually right about only liking three songs or something bc there are some songs which are good but just not in your everyday playlist 😭
I saw them live on the starcatcher tour and it was an epic production and great vocals etc - but I’m ngl…we left early. They had a huge guitar only solo and drum only solo back to back in the first third, which was sick but totaled almost 15? Minutes! But after the B stage half way THEY DID IT AGAIN. They completely lost the crowd on pacing and everything started to sound the same. It was a Wednesday night so no one was drunk and people started to leave. I heard they do encores too and I absolutely would not have been able to stay for that. I agree with your criticism of the lack of diction and guitar solos on every song…my favorites are on different albums plus light my love obv.
oh my god thank you. i’ve been to over 60 concerts and they were by far the worst one. Josh kept leaving 5 times, 10+ minutes each and the terrible instrumental solos were just so bad. many left early, the concert was over 2 hours (normally 1 hour) long and the energy was GONE after the first 20 minutes. soooo disappointing.
I feel like you don't get rock music then. 10 minute solos are part of that genre. They are all instrumentally gifted and all the solos were amazing, I do think that some could be a minute or 2 shorter but was such a great experience. They were easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
@@racheltopping9422 i’m a rock fan and that’s mainly what i listen to forever - so i also know when solos are great and when they’re not. i loooove a good guitar solo, especially live. but with greta, the guitar riffs are even messy in the recordings. there’s a hand full of songs that are genuinely good.
idk if you’ll ever see this but even thought you called one of my favorite bands ass, I would love to see your reaction to Starcatcher. probably my favorite album by them and I feel like they’ve grown so much more into their style and voice!
Fun reaction!! Don't know if you take recommendations on here, but would love to see you react to Soundgarden, they're an amazing band! Got to thinking about this considering this reaction is more rock than your usual reactions, and it would be superfun to see you react to more rock music, if that's something you'd be interested in doing :)
I’m a super casual fan of GVF so I don’t know every song of theirs but they are actually incredible live. Quite literally HAD to see them a second time two days after the first time because they were so amazing even without knowing that much of their discography at the time
My husband would totally agree with you, while I am a great fan and have seen them live twice. I do understand what you mean and I hope you'll listen to Starcatcher when your ears are recovered again.
Almost all of the lyrics throughout Greta's entire discography are entirely well-written, with deep meanings and thought-out ideas. You just have to be willing to listen to the song for what it is end then sit and read the lyrics in their entirety. (From someone who studies literature and analyses text on a regular.) When I first listened to Greta, I fell in love with the sound and atmosphere of the music. What the boys stand for and what they give off to the world. Maybe a month or so after first listening to them I decided to make a Word document with all of their lyrics, from doing that I was able to connect so much more deeply with the music. I was able to slowly read all of the lyrics without getting distracted by killer vocals and their instrumentation. I actually find it really fun going back and reading their lyrics and finding those deeper meanings because there are a lot. Really significant ones as well. But that's just me. And maybe, sitting down and reading the songs in entirety without music in mind, would help to be able to understand the song and connect. If that's something that'd interest you. The guys have also spoken about how they personally like when you can feel/hear the falters and flaws in music (such as it sounding "messy". So a lot of the time it's intentional but I definitely get how if you haven't read/watched interviews, it does come across as unintentionally messy and somewhat careless. The guitarist, Jake, has also said that when he plays guitar, he likes to play really unreleased and without restraint, in his own words, he takes a more "animalistic" approach which can definitely be seen in live performances. Just another reason why it might sound messy. They also have a very distinct sound that is curated heavily for live shows. Their live shows are absolutely life-changing (Or so I've heard), I personally do not live in an area where I've been able to see them in person but videos from shows are always captivating. In addition, their live performance at Red Rocks Amphitheater is on UA-cam and it's mind-blowing. Amazing gentlemen and talented performers. Obviously, everyone has their own opinion. Not denying that. Not every musical artist is for everyone. I just really love Greta Van Fleet. Their music, in particular their lyrics, and their overall message has changed my life. I just wanted to weigh in, and hopefully give some reason/explanation as to why you may not have enjoyed this album as much as you thought you would. Definitely try out their other albums and their double EP and see if any of them are more your style. edit: I'm also not sure if they ever branded it as a concept album. They said they were wanting to make "a soundtrack to a movie that hadn't been made" (But I guess that does kind of imply that it's a conceptual album). And, at least for me, I find all of these songs as cinematic and I think they can all be used for cinematic purposes. I find that all of the songs kind of tell a bit of a dystopian, hopeful vs hopeless atmosphere, which at least for me definintely paints a cinematic picture. Of course, if they did brand it as a concept album, let me know. But as far as I'm aware, they didn't.
@@saram3449 For me personally, I can hear what the singer is saying. I can hear the words. I was trying to say that sometimes it's worth reading lyrics without music so you can really understand the meanings, without melodies getting in the way. I get what you're trying to say though.
i feel like their music doesn’t lend well to listening on your own. but i’ve ended up at 2 of their stadium shows (my sister loves them and has dragged me along) and it’s really epic. and then i go to try and listen to it on my own and i just cant😂
GVF just as good live as in the studio.. I flew up to Seattle from SOCAL to see these guys. With high expectations they by far exceeded everything I was hoping for.
I love this band. They are really good and talented and enjoy of their art very much. The only criticism I have is that I get tired after a few songs. Seems like I need proper soothing pauses before sometimes overpowering vocals kick in. I mean the vocals are cherries on a top of a cake but I have to eat the rest of a cake too...

to me… it seems like greta van fleet is a live band more than anything. the boys are clearly talented and these songs feel like they were made to be played for large crowds hence the *many* guitar solos and josh’s booming voice. if i was at a festival and passed by this stage i would definitely stop to watch! however for me, sitting and listening to one of their albums all the way through like this just does NOT work. many of their songs don’t feel like the members feed off of each other and mesh, it feels like they all went into separate studios to record their parts, sat in front of a laptop to try and fit them all together, then when they were done said to each other “sounds cool” and went on to the next one. i think when a greta song works, it WORKS, but most of their stuff unfortunately is lost on me.
I honestly like listening to Troy review an album he doesn’t completely love. He can be such a savage sometimes it’s hilarious 🤣
“i don’t mind the voice as much in this one” ENOUGH
I love Josh's voice. I am 76 and never knew Led Zeppelin because I was busy working and had a family to take care of back then.
Easy to listen to at a bar, won’t skip it in a playlist… but I’m not seeking it out regularly
my boyfriend who mainly listens to bryson tiller and dvsn wanted Greta Van fleet as his first concert and it was such an experience!!
This video was so funny, chat and Troy were cracking me up multiple times lol also shoutout to whoever chatted “I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock” because that made me choke on my water
BAHAYGABAH
I think you got into this with a pop mind, this band and album is just incredible and I'm really sad you just didn't get that. The guitarists are incredibly talented and capable, just like the drummer and singer.
Dude this is what album reviews are about, you don’t have to love everything you listen to and that’s the beauty of taste
On that note I also can’t get into Greta van fleet 😂
Okay now you have to react to EACH of their albums. Each one has a VERY different feel. I’d be super excited to see how you react to each.
i saw them literally under a week ago. it was incredible
Jake cooked you with that Weight of Dreams solo
Way too judgey if you ask me.. I think this is such a refreshing band in todays music. Lighten up
as a musician and singer i absolutely adore greta van fleet. i grew up listening to classic rock (i grew up with my grandparents). i saw gvf live in 2022 and it was insane. being around jazz musicians and rock musicians you gotta understand what the flow state is. and honest to god their entire concert was a flow state. i hope you give them another chance!
Honestly it’s sad to read some of those comments from the stream.
People can have opinions! Not everyone has to like the same thing!
OKAY BUT STARDUST CHORDS AND LIGHT MY LOVE ARE SO GOOD OH MY GOODNESS I ASCEND EVERY TIME I HEAR THEM WITH MY HEADPHONES BLASTING
Don’t know if I can keep watching because according to the comments, all I’ll be left with is hurt feelings 😢
I feel like he has liked worse artists so...
bro i have no idea i couldn’t imagine listening to trip the light fantastic and not falling in love 😫😫😫😫
at least he liked light my love, otherwise we would’ve had an issue 😂
Music is subjective, he’s pointing out plenty of things he really likes about it too, he doesn’t have to like everything
*like he’s just giving his opinion
I actually lost my mind the first time I listened to them it transcends me😭 but still appreciate your thoughts
it's albums like this i'm so thankful that i barely register lyrics when i listen to music, sure good lyrics make me like songs more but i love just listening for vibes and not for stories. give me a nice bass line and a fun little melody and i'll listen to your music for hours
i wish he would have done some research on the band, their dynamic, and their style like he does w other artists. the lyrics and story is incredible if you understand it
retweet ‼️
to say there is “no substance” with the lyrics without actually even trying to analyze the lyrics is crazy. gvf lyrics have the most depth out of any rock band i know besides Rush
Their guitarist won solo of the century for the weight of dreams and it was well deserved that solo never fails to make me ascend
GVF is one of my favorite bands ever and getting to hear them live (twice) will be a highlight in my life. It’s not for everyone but they are incredibly talented. This video gave me such fun insight.
Funny you should say it's so cinematic to Broken Bells. They intended to give this album a cinematic vibe.
You should react to Wet Leg! Not at all like Greta but still a cool indie rock band and a very fun one, too!
I think you would’ve loved listening/watching the red rocks show!! Great mix of all their original albums before TBAGG and Starcatcher-and, honestly, it’s the “sound” that caught everyone’s attention to begin with!
Can I just say that Troy is the best channel i’ve found this year I watch him all the time
I feel like this is a perfect example of, some music is just not for everyone. I personally really enjoyed this album and so do a lot of people but again everyone does have their own prefrence and that is ok.
You have no idea how long I’ve wanted you to do this
I would love to see you react to Remi Wolf her album Juno is soooo good! I think you would like it :))
LOVE Remi
I really like this take
I love GVF and even though some of your thoughts break my heart, I appreciate your opinion. I’ll be honest to and say some of my favourite songs are the ones that had to slowly build on me so maybe that’s the same for you
It seriously, see them live and welcome to the peaceful army🌻
a lot of what you said is perfectly valid, except for saying they talk about a whole lot of nothing. wish you would've dived into their lyrics a bit more! the songs would make wayyyy more sense, i promise!!
I agree with Troy here. I saw them live and they were absolutely incredible but the first half of the album before Light My Love is set up all extremely similar. Also art is subjective y'all, we've been here before lol before y'all come after Troy.
Their first album to me is my favorite. Clear direction, folksy-rock. Love it. Headbangers.
I feel like as a veteran gvf fan you either u get it or you don’t, they have so much deeper meanings but if u don’t get it you don’t get it
as a massive tbagg fan, you’re actually right about only liking three songs or something bc there are some songs which are good but just not in your everyday playlist 😭
troy you need to listen to Wasteland baby. i will die on the Hozier hill
I really enjoy their concerts. It makes me feel like I’m ascending
idk if you’ll ever see this but even thought you called one of my favorite bands ass, I would love to see your reaction to Starcatcher. probably my favorite album by them and I feel like they’ve grown so much more into their style and voice!
Been waiting for this for a long time and from the comments I fear I’m going to be disappointed with the reaction 🥲
shit on them all you want but whos gonna tell him that jake won guitar solo of the century with twod.
Jake is the best songwriter of our time
I was in this stream, The chat was like a battle ground. Incredibly enjoyable stream.
Quite literally HAD to see them a second time two days after the first time because they were so amazing even without knowing that much of their discography at the time
they themselves have described this album as more of a cinematic album, its not supposed to be a rock n roll album.
(From someone who studies literature and analyses text on a regular.)
When I first listened to Greta, I fell in love with the sound and atmosphere of the music.
You shouldn’t really have to sit down and read all the lyrics 😭 you should actually be able to hear what the singer is saying….
TROOYYY NOOOOO I definitely think starcatcher is better than this album but i’m glad you gave it a try. imma go cry and scream greta now😂
GVF just as good live as in the studio.. I flew up to Seattle from SOCAL to see these guys. With high expectations they by far exceeded everything I was hoping for.
I’ve heard of Greta before, but I didn’t get into them until I heard them at a summer music festival this year, and I’m like okay I like them
Thanks Troy for a good laugh tn, “like I need a beer” had me rollin. I liked their first album, kinda caught on to their schtik after highway tune
your reaction to the album has helped me have more love for it.
Produced by Greg Kurstin - who has produced Foo FIghters and Adele (including 25 and Hello).
Heat Above is one of my FAVORITE songs. One of those songs I wish I could send my dad. Every time I hear it, I think of him.
Also Light My Love ❤
