- Many of you have asked me to play Half-Life Alyx on the Pimax Crystal. You wanted to know if the device is also interesting for people who like action games and who are not only into flight- or racing sims. You also wanted to know if you can run the Crystal on a weaker GPU. So I combined all that goodness into one video. Here you go! Also I have tested controller tracking! Enjoy!

Which games do you intend to play on Crystal?
Yes, I plan on buying the headset and would like to see how well it works in DCS World.
DCS
Beat saber, pls. Need to check controllers respond.
Then my RTX 2080TI will be ok for most VR? Hope...
HL: Alyx! =)
Thank you very much,Sebastian. Great Video. I am really looking forward to testing the device by my self--can't wait 😊 Kind regards
Sebastian, when you do these videos try to also do different scenes in the game like a really bright outdoor area as well. Thanks!
I’m continuing to watch how it goes, as I would have to also buy a PC.
I’d be using it for some gaming/simming, but primarily for VR sculpting and VR game creation in programs like Adobe Medium, UNREAL 5, etc.
wow i like these videos. keep em coming. really hope they ship in april
They chose one of the least demanding areas of the game to demo this. I'd have preferred to see a demo in an outside area.
The darker the more demanding. Btw he was mostly testing the blacks.
@@adrenalinejunkie3828 but the pimax crystal isn't 4k per eye, it"s 2880x2880 per eye.
@@SuperDre74 Generally 4k refers to TV 4k which is 3180x2160 which equals 8,294,400.
Crystal is 2880x2880 which equals... 8,294,400.
It's actually the exact pixel count of a 4k tv per eye. Calling resolutions 4k, 8k etc gets messy due to aspect ratios etc. I think it's fair to say that it's 4k per eye, at least in terms of demand of rendering as people would be most familiar with a 16:9 4k panel for 4k performance, which the crystal matches exactly.
@@HeadsetHistorian That's not how terminology of 4k works, 4k refers to the horizontal resolution, 4k UHD also sets the vertical resolution. But you're right in regards to demand of the rendering.
@@pierre1050 Testing the blacks?!
Hi Sebastian, good as always. I pre ordered but hope it works for flight sims with an i7-7700k and a 3080 gpu
Hi Sebastian, will you be trying the wider FOV lenses? Keep up the good work.
After your overwhelming positive review of it, i am considering to buy.
I am i to Ams2. Can you please test it😁
Wondering if I should buy a new pc to play the Bigscreen or Pimax Crystal on, but this convinced me I could use my pc which has the RTX 2080 super graphics card thanks for the review.
PLEASE ask Pimax to have a version of the Crystal that is set up for pc only, base station without controllers that is like the 8K. If you just use the Pimax for racing & flight sims & gaming you don't need all the extras. This will bring down the cost & people with PCs & an Index setups would buy the Crystal. I would be one of those to purchase the Crystal.
people who play simulatores dont buy base stations - they need a simple setup out of the box... you just want the device cheaper, because you already got the rest. if they want to sell their device to non pimax users, inside out tracking is needed, or they can not expand.
It would not make sense as its so marginal audience of people who still use outdated base stations. Also, Varjo Aero is exactly this.. and it costs more than Crystal.
Not to mention that they already have the 8k, why not get that if its what you want? It has the same resolution, no insideout tracking and wider FOV.
What they are doing with Crystal is exactly the right thing, it aims to be the ultimate PCVR headset. Not for simmers, but as an universal PCVR headset.
I would never buy anything that does not have inside out tracking.
I did ask Pimax this question. Watch my interview with the CEO!
@@mixedrealityTV I'm watching the video now.Somehow I missed it.
@@mixedrealityTV Good video. But I think if you say something like "I have an index system & I only want to replace the headset". He might understand a little better. Because I believe Pimax can beat Valve to the Index 2.
Alyx plays very well on low end hardware.
what was the spec of the last computer you used? you said 4090 but what Cpu? Would love to hear!?
Thx again Sebastian for your in depth testing. Good to see that Alyx runs well on 2080. As you said though- what would MSFS look like on that setup😮. Anyways, I remain cautiously optimistic that by end of the year this headset might be usable. Still not 100% sure if I would upgrade from the pimax 8kx or wait for another next gen headset with micro oleds instead.
Msfs is more CPU bound isnt it?
@@stevebobowski3507 It’s both, 13900kf+4090OC I got 55 fps with Aero, which is similar resolution to Crystal. When I tried to enable DLSS, the frame rate is noticeable better especially if you fly over cities with high density buildings. But the cockpit and panels are too blurry so you couldn’t use it. Flat screen mode DLSS is almost perfect, you don’t notice any downgrade with graphics. VR is just demanding when u go for not well optimized games.
@@user-yy8ln9rg4s iam running same as you with 13900kf/4090 and see more CPU bound in FPSVR monitoring.
Are you using openxr for msfs? If not, you should be cause major updates where released in the last week specifically for aero and openxr within msfs. Much better performance and implementation of sliders to eliminate the red/blue color shift. Its outstanding.
The future would be something like this, but much smaller/lighter form factor maybe even a bigger FOV and developments that enable you to use it without needing the latest and best graphic card...
We're actually very very close to that.
With high res mico-OLED, pancake lenses, and eye tracking with foveated rendering, we have that headset you described.
All these components exist today. Foveated rendering via eye tracking is just very new, so we haven't seen that come to fruition properly yet on PC, but we have the tech, it's there, and ready to explode.
There are even 4K x 4K micro-OLED displays in development right now, ready to be manufactured later this year.
That's the display rumoured to be in the upcoming Apple VR headset and also the potential display for Valve's next headset (Deckard).
But with this sort of resolution which is lower than that, and foveated rendering, we should be able to drop the gpu requirement to much lower than a 4090.
We are much closer to the headset you describe than we generally think.
We just have to wait for someone to actually do it. But it's all coming together right now.
Foveated rendering needs to be supported by each individual game, so it's got to be the bigger companies pushing for it so devs jump on board.
It is interesting to know the price, just the final price, just for the sake of understanding what to expect. Sebastian, will the final sample be sent to you, if so, when will it happen?)
Mrtv on the playground!
What controllers were you using? Were those Quest 2 controllers?
How are the blacks and colors compared to oled headsets? Do you think this type of screen with local dimming is better for vr because of no mura?
will this work with the 1080ti, if only using it for bigacreen vr to watch movies?
i like your jerry sweater man
Look at their menu UI, can you ask what is 35ppd glass vs 35ppd plastic? And it seems there is only fixed foveated rendering, which is off in your demo. What about the dynamic one?
Can you please test the crystal on a 1080ti and let us know what it can run on this card if anything. Thanks
Might be crushing blacks which could be another flaw of local dimming. But sounds like a great overall improvement over standard lcd.
@@Optimus514 Yes definitely crushed blacks are processing related. However don't you think that local dimming would either have to introduce blooming or crushed blacks due to it not being pixel perfect?
With 576 zones and a 2880x2880 resolution, that would be 14,400 pixels per zone.
@@808jonnysmith it's not 576 zones. Where did you get that?
@@cheeeeezewizzz MRTV recent interview with Pimax Boss. It's 24x24=576.
Tip, get Alyx Workshop Maps, there are hundreds and many are AMAZING. This is all I do in VR.
Very tempted for (mainly) driving and flight simming. Will wait to hear if a 3080ti can cope first. Will foveated rendering be added to the software and will it be good? I'm not ready to get this plus a new PC (40 series won't fit my case or power supply). And I'm still concerned about the battery. 6 hours is plenty but it's a faff having to remember to keep batteries charged and is an extra lead to worry about.
Still, I can't see anything else coming out for a while that will be able to challenge it for simming.
Inno3D GeForce RTX 4070 Ti X3 OC is one of the smallest 40-series cards, it fits my case, just check if it will fit yours. In the interview with Pimax CEO, he said 4070Ti is minimal recommend GPU for Crystal and MSFS.
@@StekuVideo thanks for the info 😃
@@StekuVideo hopefully that framegen comes in clutch for VR games soon
considering this or htc xr elite, mainly gonna be used for pcvr, vrchat, walking dead and half life alyx
I'd like to know how it runs Cyberpunk with the vorpX VR mod. I'm considering buying the Crystal + a 4070ti later if/when the price becomes reasonable.
This is good. And good to know it will work with a 2080, for that is what I have. An MSI RTX 2080 ti Gaming X-Trio. Far better than a basic 2080, but far less as good than the more modern cards.
If I get a new headset, this will likely be the one. Just not any time soon. I still want to know how good the 12K is going to be, and if it be worth the price it will have. If so, I will be saving for that one instead. And a new PC also. I doubt the 12K will work with my current 2080 it. But it might, just not near as well as with a 4090.
Looks amazing, thanks again! I just finished that same scene on my Pico4, 4090 - so that was a great demo that I had a fresh memory of. Were you able to max out the settings in Alyx for this with the 2080?
And for the local dimming, I thought I heard in a previous video they'll have something like a low/med/high local dimming setting which might bring up the details in those darker areas a bit at the cost of a bit of greying?
Also, didn't see you try this, but I always found the Quest 2 controllers made it a bit frustrating to cock the barrel of the gun in Alyx - any issues with that? Really like this series of videos and very much appreciated.
I'd like to see gameplay of a first person shooter such as Onward. Including moving, crouching, laying down, aiming, sniper scope, throwing grenades etc ... I'm not convinced it's suitable for anything other than a simulation.
Yeah with 1.2kg headset for games like Onward, Contractors or Pavlov, it must be really fun. Honestly speaking for fast pace FPS games, display quality matters far less than wireless, small form factor and light weight.
Probably could just turn up the brightness or gamma settings in the game to bring the detail back out of the dark areas right? I assume the default video settings in most games are set for headsets that aren't capable of such dark blacks like the Crystal.
True.
I think it's a deliberate move of Pimax to hide the blooming. With just 24x24 LEDs per eye, there must be blooming if you don't push the contrast to the max.
hopefully the local dimming slider will let you raise brightness a little if it looks too dark and detail is lost
Don't most games have their own slider already?
Very exited,
but still have hard fealing around pimax very very bad software quality issues.
And its not like i didnt exchange my headset, reinstalled everything mutiple time including windows. And im not alone.
How to trust them after that ? 😬 it is a big invesent.
can you do a proper test on bow tracking and arms completely out sideways. I heard the tracking is really bad like that
I would like to get a vr headset for both sim racing and half life Alex , contractors, Skyrim kind of games . field of view (120x 140), screen (144hz+ oled), pancake lenses, external tracking and clarity of 35+ppd. Maybe I have to wait for the pimax 12k? What do you think? Is this a good compromise ?
How do you suppose to play Contractors with behemoth HMD like this ? For that type of games I don’t want cables at all and coz I turn my body really fast, if the headset is too heavy it’ll be slippery no matter how hard you tighten it.I’m also wearing Bhaptics gears+ gun stock for FPS games, A small wireless headsets like Quest 2 or Pico 4 will be better for that use case.
Seb, can you please ask them (or maybe you already know) will the consumer be able to toggle local dimming on and off?
It’s probably gonna be implemented into the pitool app(or whatever branding their giving the new app)
Should be possible since the staff there was using the Pimax Clien which we have access to turn it on and off
@@metalmanexetreme I agree, would just like to get official confirmation. Hard to imagine they wouldn't include it.
CEO said they are working on a slider so you can adjust how much
@@palmTreeeeee Yes, you are right. I had missed that. High, medium and low settings. Cool.
At 1:50 you can see the different PPD and FOV setting on the Pimax Client. 35ppd Glass 42ppd Plastic and 35ppd Plastic
Hmm… two 35PPDs? I wonder what the different between the glass and plastic lenses are, and which will come with the device?
@@metalmanexetreme I am guessing the 35 ppd glass is the wide fov lens
@@metalmanexetreme They originally made the lenses in polycarbonate before they started producing the glass ones. The distortion profiles were different. They have had 42ppd glass ones before too.
How can you test the controller tracking and say it is totally fine without even testing pulling things out from behind you or storing them again?
Thanks for the video, as always.
and hands down by side, G2 couldn't do that, also wondering how far back the cameras track controllers
@@palmTreeeeee tracking volume is fine, without a doubt better than G2.
Can you test it with an AMD GPU?
So they just "fixed" the blooming issue by reducing the brightness (at least in darker areas, gamma...). If they would raise the brightness to a level that you could see details in the dark, then the blooming would be back. With just 24x24 LEDs per eye, this problem must occur. I'm keeping my preorder anyway but it's quite a bummer... I'm hoping for good OLED-panels or just more local-dimming-LEDs in the future.
Hey Sebastian, what is the color depth of the crystal, 8 bit, 10bit, 12bit?
I don't know about the bit depth, but Pimax themselves claim that their QLED displays cover 90% of the color range of BT.2020, and the greater your color range, the more bit depth is required if you want to keep the same gradient smoothness.
Alyx on crystal? Damn, how the mighty have fallen. These hard times have hit everyone, I hope she finds help.
lol
Really love vr but dont plan to get a new headset before we see some more games (bigger games)
PSVR2 is where the bigger games are. I wish Sony would port their vr games to pc, which is possible since they have been porting there 2d games to pc.
Tonne of flat to vr mods. Look into praydog and luke ross mods to start.
@@808jonnysmith Yeah but VR is a very small market compared to flat, Sony wouldn’t make much money porting their VR games to PC. PC VR market is probably even smaller than Quest.
@@user-yy8ln9rg4s Sad but true
i wonder how smooth the head tracking is, and if there's a reason locomotion is teleport
teleport is the default game setting isn't it
Head tracking is just as good as on the other headsets.
Yes... For all of it, Simming AND roomscale, why not it looks like it is perfect for both!
Sabastian, I hope you're discussing more than just visuals.
With comfort, the foam thickness sucks and I can't get anything better. With the 15mm interface and any pair of glasses I am pressed up against the HARDware and the nose piece is so long its trying to scoop my eyes out, it gives me a migraine after just 2 or 3 hours. I wish they didn't focus so much on making your eyeballs literally touch the lenses and looked more into thicker padding like 20mm-30mm
I'm sooo far from being excited about using these with Pimax not changing anything about the interface. Balanced is not better in this case, any angle of looking up is painfully crushing with anything more than a short session.
Please see if they can allow you to dedicate using the headset for a few hours in a flight sim or something active and analyze prolonged comfort.
Pimax offers extra foam to pad the interfaces, and people have regularly added extra to adjust comfort. A 30mm thick one would keep your eyes so far from the lenses you would get like 30 degrees less fov.
@@cheeeeezewizzz I haven't been able to find anything thicker than 15mm unless I start gluing foam together. If you have a link(or somewhere specific), I'd appreciate having it so I can get something better. When it comes to their headsets that can do 200+ deg fov, getting 30 less instead of a painful migraine is always going to be better
The swappable lenses are a big plus, hopefully 3rd party or even Pimax themselves makes custom made lenses with prescription.
@@LagiohX3 yeah trueee, it makes for a lot of options. It makes me wonder what their limit could be with prescriptions and maybe even adding coatings like blue light filter
You haven't mentioned anything about purple fringing or color issues like the Aero suffers from.
This feels like the Pimax headset that may finally redeem them. I can't stop watching these Crystal videos even though I can't afford one nor the 4090 to run it 😅💀
I want one but I doubt even 3080ti will run it beyond quest 2 res lol
All these heavy headsets people are gonna have to start going to a chiropractor to lengthen the neck back out. I do wonder wearing such a heavy headset can cause neck/spinal issues/compression.
If I had a neck problem, I'd go to an orthopaedic surgeon not some quack chiropractor.
I don't get why the pimax staff are so unresponsive to sebastian. He asks for help and it seems like they are in their own world doing something. Pay attention at least while hes recording the demo.
I don't think English is their first language. Please don't be so harsh with them.
I have a 4090 and an asus rog 709e motherboard. I’ve tried to get the pimax 8kx to connect to it without any luck. Any suggestions why is not recognizing the display port? Also, would the crystal be any different?
probably because their headsets don't use hdmi. They use display port.
@@cheeeeezewizzz yes it does, sorry I miss typed that.
You need to try restarting PC, pitools etc again and again. Sometimes it’ll freeze your PC, Welcome to Pimax software stacks.
Mine wouldn’t also until I disabled the internal cpu graphics card
@@timsellmann705 I have a asus rog z790e motherboard. Could you please help me find that setting?
I have a 2070 and a i9 9900k 32 gigs ram. I have little to no problems running VR at index levels 1600x1440p.👾💋
Index has quite low resolution compared to this.
If I was given the chance to test the Crystal's QLED displays, I'd check for: Black Crush, Blooming, oversaturated colors, distortion on the edges, and compared the low vs. high fov.
I owned the Pimax 5K Plus for almost 30 days and returned it for cons that outway the good. When I heard that the 5K Plus had a higher resolution, wider fov, and faster refresh rate than the Quest 2, I became eager to get my hands on one, especially since it was on sale.
I returned my Quest 2 and asked for money for an early Christmas present. My excitement was off the roof when it arrived, but not long after, I noticed that the image was not as sharp as the Quest 2s, that the distortion when setting the fov to wide was very noticeable and that the weight was way too much for playing rhythm and fitness games. I was extremely disappointed with the product, and I tried to find ways to fix the display problems, but I couldn't. The only issue that had a backup option was the fov, which was lowering it to the second best Fov setting.
So, I compared the 5K Plus and the Quest 2 to finally have a conclusion. Do I prefer a higher refresh, a bit wider fov, and the ability to use my knuckles with the Pimax headset, or do I prefer a lighter weight, clearer displays, and inside out tracking? I went with the Quest 2 in the end.
These are my opinions, though, so take my review with a grain of salt.
Also, Pimax's headset designs scream out, "I need healing," if you get that gaming reference, lol.
God Bless.
I came to a very similar conclusion (though with slightly different equipment).
very much considering the Crystal, but first need a better GPU to run it (currently only rtx2080 max q).
I'm not a sim player, so I would be playing games like Alyx.
I'd say based on weight and awkwardness......crystal for sims and more sitting games and varjo aero for games you'll be moving around your play space more in.
@@stevebobowski3507 You wouldn't recommend the Bigscreen Beyond over the expensive Varjo Aero?
@@DMan-ud6bt I wouldn't recommend big screen just yet. It's tough to recommend something without it being released in the wild to see how it really functions apart from the specs given by the company. Speaking of which, what concerns me about the specs are 28ppd / pancake lenses and the fact you will need to submit a 3d scan of your face......which means no sharing and what if the scan messes up or the cushion flattens overtime and throws off the dimensions or you suddenly loose or gain a bunch of weight......too much grey area unfortunately.
I currently own an aero and is worth every penny. Really outstanding. Iam looking forward to the release of the crystal to see how it does in the wild before I pull the trigger but for now, the aero is the highest quality consumer headset available in the world and if you love vr and looking for better visuals I'd say you wont be upset. Plus varjo is nice enough to offer a 14 day return but I doubt you will return it after experiencing it......I didnt. :)
@Steve Bobowski The aero that costs nearly 3k to get started when you also buy controllers audio and basestations, offers a tiny ass fov, and has distortions like a bridge swaying in the wind? Thing is an expensive piece of shit.

Nope, it's not going to run!
The edge to edge clarity is obviously very good with this headset.

I do think Pimax have delivered a great product based on these videos.
What remains to be seen is how it compares to big screen beyond and other micro OLED / pancake lenses headsets.
All dies ist strittig, es sei denn, das Gerät wird tatsächlich freigegeben.
Still nothing about the stand alone. Alwise hooked to a computer. Its is being sold as a stand alone 1st and pc afterwards.
I actually think it is being sold as pc first and stand alone second just because the ability is there with the XR2 chip. That is why they are releasing it before the stand alone functionality is ready. I think there are better cheaper options out there for people who are primarily intrested in stand alone. This will only really shine when you have a PC's power to drive the panels. In stand alone mode the resolution and clarity will have to take a big hit.
Nobody is waiting for its standalone functions ... PCVR for the win :)

Controller tracking could be better on this because it's such a big headset and the cameras are further apart.
you mean a wider tracking area? I hope this is true, Seb needs to run some tests.
2080? What is this 2019? Lets get a 4070 Ti in there.😎
I'm sitting here with a 1080ti lol. Waiting for a potential 4080ti.
We're not all rich

I feel like this is an advertisement
It's a great headset! So it does advertise itself pretty well! If you want the downsides as well, watch my Crystal preview here on the channel! Thanks for watching and commenting!
2080? Lol
take my money Pimax!
