if you ever smell that stuff he used you know thats what the base of that crap is, when working on equipment you dont go to a box store and buy a home owner engine cleaner, all that stuff is made for a home owner that has know clue what they are doing, so they make something that will not hurt much, you work on equipment you buy a 5 gallon pail of engine degreesir, from an industrial supply shop. that stuff is $85 cnd a pail, just dont splash it on your skin, one drop will eat a hole in you, you spray it on, let it sit 10 min and hose it down, comes out like new, and clean rads really good, with just a garden hose, do not put it in a home owner presser washer, begame over.., and dont wasste your money on them home owner cleaners for presser washers for durty jobs , at best they may clean your siding.. 5 gallons go a long way, have the same can for 4 years and can still do a skidder or 2
I can second that (OVEN CLEANER^^).. you may have to test some different brands BUT oven cleaner is pretty good. I use it to clean car rims and it takes the baked brake dust right off.. another brand was Autoglym Engine& Machine cleaner, it is water based and biodegradeable and does a pretty good job.. with everything.. I would try to let it soak for a couple of days, agitating it with a brush ( not necessarily a wire one.. more like a big big tooth brush), and always reaplying the cleaner so it does not dry out ( spraying it with just some water lightly will also help preventing it from drying)... I did clean up some really really old dirty "barn bikes".. if you really want to get aggressive, a pressure washer with high temps would do the trick...
Look for a good used hot water or steam pressure washer. That will get that engine clean as a whistle. We use to have one at the shop. Worked lika a hot damn. Thx for the vid. Evan
I enjoy the videos. Top of valve cover has a crankcase breather, may need to clean it, can get clogged and cause pressure in the crankcase, which causes oil leaks.
Once you get familiar with that old tractor, maintenance, repair and running that old tractor gets easier but it's o.k. to keep praying bro. Enjoy your videos. Keep em coming. Have a great new year. Blessings and success. I'm praying for y'all. ☝🙏👉...
Hey Evan, next time you spray your engine down, spray the inside of your distributor cap with wd40, just dump out the excess and put it back on, it will fire right back up. Wd40 displaces water, works great for this
I've always had good results with a heavy mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water sprayed over greasy areas. let set a while to work on the grease, and then use pressure washer. Also protect your distributor from moisture as others have suggested.
JudithB We had a 1945 Allis and it was easy to use and care for. I think the older tractors are less problems then the newer kind, just needs some care up front!
Got a Series 1 D17 too. My Grandpa bought it new in 1957. It’s a year younger than me. I put an old Kelley loader on it, and also have the original Snap Coupler 3 bottom plow. I wouldn’t use a Fram oil filter on anything I own...
My go-to is Simple Greens Crystal engine degreaser, but I like Maguire's Super Degreaser also. The engine needs to be warm not hot, and you need to let it soak for a little while, then you use your pressure washer, and repeat if necessary. They make some other more stringent degreasers but they'll take paint off too. Great video, Jimmy
Mix up some Dawn dish washing liquid and put in a garden sprayer, spray and let it soak a while, then use pressure washer on it. Dawn will surprise you.
Get a couple of spray cans of carburator cleaner, not just for the carburator but for the engine block as well. Will clean it down to the paint with the pressure washer. Also keep the dist. cap dry on the inside. Hope this helps. John
Get a complete carburetor rebuild kit , and see if you can get replacement points , condenser , rotor , and distributor cap for the distributor this should solve part of your starting problems , New spark plug wires may also help and maybe a new coil and coil wire maybe part of your problem . 👍 👍
The brush breaking on you was the major player in the difficulty with cleaning the engine. That degreaser was doing a fine job when you were able to scrub. Most degreasers use citric acid -- which comes from citrus, and gives it that nice citrus scent. The acid is mild and not terribly corrosive, that is to say it's not going to be a problem if you get some on your skin and wash it off. Strong acids would work better but also be a serious safety hazard, and they'd probably do more damage than good to the engine. Using the pressure washer was a good idea, despite some problems with peeling paint. But, when washing an engine it's a good idea to also cover and seal and places water can get in and cause problems, like with the distributor needing to dry out.
You will want to still get a rebuild kit for the carburetor. We are looking to get a tractor next year after we finish our barn build. Our whole build build can be found on our channel. God Bless C.F.F.
Try getting the engine warm or above warm then spray the gunk on and wait ten minutes then pressure wash it off...it will work a lot better...and your carburetor needs a kit in it...not much trouble putting that in and you should be ready to go...thanks for the new video Evan... can't wait until next time my friend...
We use Purple Power on our golf course machinery including engines. Read mix directions, and put it in a 2gal. pump sprayer. Spray it down and then pressure wash. Works for us.
These old tractors can be a pain but on the good side they can be repaired and many times with items that many you can get at your local hardware store. A new one will be next to impossible to repair yourself. They are full of complicated electronics and the dealer will make a fortune off you servicing your shinny new tractor. Old school way of cleaning the engine is a can of gasoline with a stiff bristle brush. If you go that route do it outside , don,t smoke and don,t tell anybody what you are doing as some busy body will call the EPA on you. P.S a fire extinguisher might also be a good idea to have handy. Happy New Year
The best engine cleaner is called BIG BLUE MIX IT 50/50 with water let set for 20 to 30 Pressure wash it. Try not to get it on your skin it’ will not hurt your motor dry your skin. I worked for Procter & Gamble and that’s what we used to clean our equipment it cleans like you can’t Believe
correct... i read the comments .... probably needs fuel shut off valve if it dont have one.... on and off with valve everytime you want to use tractor.....
hi evan,i been waiting for stuff like this, red thunder or oven cleaner, warm motor, first off, thats a good tractor, lets getter fixed up,starting at the fuel tank, unscrew the sediment bowl out of the tank, your checking for a parcel plug, bugs and rust and gunk build up over the years, than look in the tank with a flashlight, take apart the sediment bowl, run a wire through the holes ,no parcial plugs there either, fueled with a gas can ,it happens a lot, carbs every time i do one i used a little sealant on the old gaskets, you got wire all the holes ,verafining there open, check your intake for leaks cracks,or loose bolts, order a set of points and a condenser on line, wire brush your plugs and regap, look over your cap ,probably see a white build up were the plug wires go ,scrap that off with a knife, center too,or sand papers ok to,check over your distributor, your looking for rubbed wires shorting wires, bad connections, your tractor got wet both times wouldn't start ,start with no throttle,im sorry this is long ,ill stop here ,just tryin to help you win brother
hot water press. washer w/ whirlie bird tip..... also check the tip on rotor button under dist. cap for wear and corossion.... cracked plug wires .... cracked or broke porceiln on plugs.....
That was a good quick fix. I love those farrel type tubing fittings. I use them all the time. These old tractors are good too. I bought a new J.D.3025 with a loader. Their nice but i miss my old Kubota. It was just as good and almost as efficient. Did about anything i needed done. I think the old ones are far better made. Much simpler to work on too.
I see some comments for Purple Power and Simple Green. Those are my two engine degreasers. I think Purple Power will damage plastics, so be careful there. You've got some heirloom quality buildup on that tractor so you may just have to keep at it for a while until you're satisfied. I just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it. Best of luck to you and your wife.
When you were backing up the tractor, the front tires were rolling over and squshing down on the bottom. I think that they could use some air before you brake a bead and have a bigger problem.
Home Depot sells a product called "ZEP Citrus Degreaser concentrate", in a 1gallon jug. I just use it straight in a spray bottle , let it soak then pressure wash it off. I use it on anything that has oil or grease build up and works great. Sometimes I have to use a scrub brush on the heavily soiled parts. Might be worth a try. 🇨🇦
Looking forward to your shop build. Certain you're looking forward to it much more! Congrats on the tractor maint. We had some spring-like weather, didn't we?
If the old filter had a cork gasket it was either a new/old stock when it was put on or just not been changed in a very long time, I am guessing not changed in a very long time. The fact that the tractor has an upflow carburetor saved you from getting gas into your engine, just think if it had been a down flow like on a car, the gas would have leaked into the intake and into the engine through an open intake valve. I first thought you had a Series 2 or 3 because of the decals, I grew up driving a series 1 D17. They were tough and easy on fuel compared to other gas burners. It took me a while to get used to the foot clutch cutting off the PTO and hydraulics and we never had a three point on it, I really liked the A/C system but now getting implements is tough. Been decades since I got on any tractor, like seeing the old orange ones.
I know this video is old now but, I bought my oil filter for my d-14 from Napa, and I’ve seen butt loads on amazon and eBay just an FYI if you still haven’t found an alternative source 😀
Hey Evan, I'm no tractor expert, but I do know that these old engines are built to last. When dealing with this type engine, remember the old saying: KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. Lol Get something to dry out your distributor after pressure washing. Also get a rebuild kit for the carburetor. Adding a degreaser solution that is made for your pressure washer is best, but simple green is pretty good stuff too. And so is the Gunk heavy duty aerosol degreaser on a warm engine. Any old farmer will tell you, dont replace the part if ain't broke. Smart maintenance is the key. There are alot of DIY forums on-line you can check out. Just my thoughts. Hope it helps a little anyways. Love your videos and keep em coming! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's to you and yours!
I second the oven cleaner idea, but if you can watch sensitive parts of the engine, an aerosol can of brake cleaner will busy up most of what I put in front of it. Since it came with the property, you're miles ahead of the rest of us! Lol. Another great vid, hope you guys had a great Christmas!
I hot pressure wash first, then scrub with a firm brush, re-pressure wash, use oven cleaner, final pressure wash... takes about 30-45 mins to do a dirty engine fully... but you can eat off it after... (I clean all my engines monthly so they never get really bad)
I would use detergent oil and clean the inside of the motor . Just change the oil often until it is clean . I changed my IH 414 to detergent oil years ago and the motor is cleaning up inside . Evan don't worry about the age of the D17 it will go for your life time if you maintain it well and don't overheat the motor . Watch your heat age and clean the radiator with water and air . You need to rebuild the carb and ignition system which I think you end up doing
Try spraying a light oil (WD-40) and let it soak overnight. Then try the pressure washer. There's a channel out there that actually uses a light machine oil on the whole tractor to keep it from rusting. Nice work on the tubing and the video!
Ok on the cleaning of the engine... Oven cleaner will do the best but it will damage the paint warm the engine to operating temp and with warm /heated water through the pressure washer will clean the best, but remember this it took a long time to build up it will take the same effort to remove the buildup
Before you put the new oil thing, check if everyting is oké with the norsel, i mean put the pijp in and turn it on and turn him lose en look if its oke. White one hand you hold on the pijp Into the hole and the other hand your turn on the note. So use both hands to fixe it.
great job, sounds good. When you said you messed with the distributor cap and it started, you might want to check it for cracks. I had an old ford automobile and whenever it rained the car would not start. It was due to condensation getting in the crack that was on the distributor cap. took me a long time to figure that out.
a good tuneup is what the old girl needs. plugs, wires and ignition parts including a new cap. a good carb cleaning and kit. the more you tighten the oil pan bolts the more you push out the old cork gasket. get a new gasket and do it right.
Purple power is good & simple green too for cleaners . Water or just moisture in a distributor cap is good place to start on your starting problem , first the garden hose , wouldn't start , then the power washer , wouldn't start , you can wipe out your distributor cap with WD 40 as it displaces water or blow out with air , that's on inside of the cap but also on top in the plug wire holes ! :-) your carb looks a little little worse for wear too so don't rule out a good carb overhaul , good luck ! :-)
For cleaning the motor of the tractor you can use diesel oil,you nowe the gaseline that running your diesel motor. After that you clean it with water with high pressure,100bar or more. The motor lokes new ,nothing better Than diesel fuele .good luke
3M heavy duty brake cleaner in the black can sure works on grease. But your brush and pressure washer and some elbow grease is best. Working around loader frame sucks.
Gunk is junk, pressure washer is the best way to clean. The problem was probably the carb. You didn't pull the float and needle. Next time pull them out and make sure the float actually floats in water or gas. Pull the needle and blow out all the passages with compressed air. It was probably flooded with gas making it hard to start. If it was spark, pull the condenser cap and clean the points with sandpaper. Judging by the grime on the engine the valve cover gasket is probably toast, easy replacement. These old tractors always leak, just keep it manageable. Also, get ethanol free gas and or use a fuel stabilizer, old gas, especially over winter can gel up and clog the carb. That all said, id be proud to own that nice piece of American iron!! Merry Christmas and God bless!
GUY IN ALL YOUR TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR PARTS ,GET THE MANNUAL FOR YOUR TRACTOR . THEY DO MKE ONE. AND NEXT TIME YOU WASH THE TRACTOR OR ANY ENGEN PLEASE START IT AND LET IT RUN WILE YOU CLEAN IT, IT IS ALSO WISE TO HAVE SOMEONE ON THE CONTROLS TO KEEP IT RUNNING FOR YOU...
Hey Evan, you came out smelling like a rose on that project. You have received a lot of good ideas for repairs to the tractor and cleaning up the greasy drivetrain. You definitely need to rebuild the carburetor properly using the right carb kit and check to make sure the float does float. You also need to protect the distributor when spraying fluids around it, after washing around the distributor remove the cap and dry inside the cap and rotor. Use air to blow dry the outside of the cap. Spray the outside of the cap with WD40 as a water repellent. Good luck to you and keep up the good work and videos. Thanks for sharing with us.
water shouldnt bother it, its a tractor and that part is in the open, if it is getting water in, time to replace it,, same with the plug wires if they are old.. these parts are made to work wet, or cars would be stallled every were, boats would be floating free.. last thing you want to do is spray it with wd40 thats an oil and it will eat rubber, dry an crack the cap, if anything spray it and the wires with CRC ENGNISION SILICON SPRAY
i like to use liquid easy off oven cleaner , you can pour it in a spray bottle and scrub then power wash. you might want to change points/ cap / rotor and wires
to get it to star every time you need a coil for 170 a resistor for a 170 & a starter solenoid for a 170 & snip the wire switch to the coil so resistor is installed at this point intsall the the solenoid use a wire to connect the small terminal on the solenoid to coil
Gunk is Junk, Super Clean and your pressure washer. Clean distributor cap and points or replace. Plugs and wires depending on how old they are ? Do a more thorough cleaning of the carb when you get the chance by removing all jets and spraying through them with carb cleaner and a little air. A little money put into the old girl will be a lot easier to take than a 400 dollar payment a month !! Thumbs up !
1st on the carb issue the only way that your carb would be that full of gas is the float sticks open on them old carbs they had brass floats and would develop tiny holes in it and sink to the bottom opening the seat and filling like you had ... The best way to tell is pull the carb off and submurge the float in water and see if any bubbles come out ... If no bubbles then it's ok next is the needle and seat could be worn causing it to seep by and overfill
Another thing , The engine oil Cap ,soak overnight in gasoline and use forced air and blow as much dirt out as you can. a clogged oil cap will cause the pressure to build up in engine and force oil out around oil gaskets. That cap is the only way for the engine to breathe .
Hi... Evan, thank you for sharing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
Thank you for having these videos. I have a 1960 d17 I’m learning on.
Carburetor full of fuel into the air breather is usually the float is either sticky or the needle needs replacing. This old tractor just needs alittle TLC.
Maybe a lot of TLC.
no really
Foaming OVEN CLEANER, it’s cheap and works as good or better than any other engine degreaser
if you ever smell that stuff he used you know thats what the base of that crap is, when working on equipment you dont go to a box store and buy a home owner engine cleaner, all that stuff is made for a home owner that has know clue what they are doing, so they make something that will not hurt much, you work on equipment you buy a 5 gallon pail of engine degreesir, from an industrial supply shop. that stuff is $85 cnd a pail, just dont splash it on your skin, one drop will eat a hole in you, you spray it on, let it sit 10 min and hose it down, comes out like new, and clean rads really good, with just a garden hose, do not put it in a home owner presser washer, begame over.., and dont wasste your money on them home owner cleaners for presser washers for durty jobs , at best they may clean your siding.. 5 gallons go a long way, have the same can for 4 years and can still do a skidder or 2

if you really want to get aggressive, a pressure washer with high temps would do the trick...
You should always coat your oil filter gasket with crankcase oil before you screw it back on. Always enjoy your videos. Have a great new year!
Super Clean engine degreaser is my go to and use hot water when presser washing. Keep up the great videos.
Wow the lighting looks like it’s working.

Wd40 displaces water, works great for this
The good thing about an old tractor, it’s either fuel or spark. I’ve learned to always start with spark. Condenser is usually the problem.
One of my favorite channels. Will make my soup and sit down tow watch later. Thank you.
In the future I would definitely put a gallon size freezer bag over that distributor before you break out the water hose lol
Enjoyed the video Evan 👍
Purple power does a good job and a hot water pressure washer. I ran a hose from my hot water heater to my pressure washer.
Congratulations....for a old tractor it never sounded better.
Appreciating your persistence!!
Add some air to your front tires.
I've always had good results with a heavy mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water sprayed over greasy areas. let set a while to work on the grease, and then use pressure washer. Also protect your distributor from moisture as others have suggested.

You need to do a whole service on tractor, all filters, plugs, wires, distribution cap ect.
My go-to is Simple Greens Crystal engine degreaser, but I like Maguire's Super Degreaser also. The engine needs to be warm not hot, and you need to let it soak for a little while, then you use your pressure washer, and repeat if necessary. Mix up some Dawn dish washing liquid and put in a garden sprayer, spray and let it soak a while, then use pressure washer on it. Dawn will surprise you.
I use simple green. Low pressure nozzle on the pressure washer. Let it sit, then blast it off with the high pressure nozzle.

God Bless
C.F.F.
I ordered a carburetor rebuild kit and tune up it's as well
Country View Acres looking forward to the video on it.
@@CountryViewAcresI have a friend who worked for coke drink co they would spray outdated coke on the big truck engine as degreaser.
Works for us.
the new lighting is great!
It would be a cool winter project to throw some new paint on that old beast.
i loved watching you work on the tractor i am 73 Jerrey Mae i would rather work on my tractor then clean the house
You make this look so easy!
Also time to lube all the zerk fittings and checking hydrolics... Good job.
Lovely job, well done
super clean seems to be the word also write the date of the oil change on the oil filter as a reminder when you did it
Good job.
Black max degreaser I have found to be one of the best degreasers our local napa sells it
Be sure after you get the engine clean, take off the Disb cap and check for mosture around plug wires and points setting, around .020.

Simple green works well.

Purple Power does pretty well on cleaning up oil.
Yup Zep purple degresser full strength the best.

If you can use hot water in your pressure washer it will clean oil better.
A 50/50 mix of Dawn and Simple Green concentrate is a cheap miracle cleaner.
C'MON Fram, orange filter for orange engine🤣
you might want check the air pressure in your front tires they look low and i recomend incredible pink as a degreaser made in maine
To get my Grandpa's D17 to run we always had to choke it and it would start every time. And when it was warmed up it would start the all day long..
I use staring fluid or brake clean to degrease my semi truck they work well.
i use traffic film remover neat, will remove oil and sometimes some of the paint
Brake cleaner also removes oil really well.
I think I missed it but good rule of thumb is to put the date on the oil filter with a sharpie.
Oldfarmjunk101 might have a hood for your D17. Hope you keep it around.
EasyOff works great on engines, but the engine has to be heated up when you spray it on.
i like to use liquid easy off oven cleaner , you can pour it in a spray bottle and scrub then power wash. you might want to change points/ cap / rotor and wires
to get it to star every time you need a coil for 170 a resistor for a 170 & a starter solenoid for a 170 & snip the wire switch to the coil so resistor is installed at this point intsall the the solenoid use a wire to connect the small terminal on the solenoid to coil
float sticks on those all the time even fresh/new always cover the distributor more trouble
