How Episode 2: Revenant works (and how short Act 1 was).
Вставка

- episode 2: revenant has launched and with it, the entirety of act 1, although it wasn't as long as people were hoping. in this vodeo, we'll go over what you need to know about tonics and how they work, in addition to other neat things introduced with the patch. thoughts start at 11:08. yt not letting me do subtitles the way i normally do them, so they might not work, idk.
some other notes: while quest steps are per character for the episode, tonics are linked, so you don't need to unlock tonics on every character. also, there were some things that i don't mention that i thought were neat: the new area in the tower, the fact that bungie made the HELM get hit by a ketch and crash to the ground, the cutscene. however, their existence did not overwhelmingly sway my opinion in feeling like this will be just another chunk of destiny content.
i usually split 'how it works' and 'my thoughts' into individual videos, so while i am a bit brief here in this video, i don't really feel like i would've added a lot to the conversation by splitting off the thoughts segment into its own full video. i would've talked about the story, which so far is fine, some action at the start is nice, and maybe some other stuff in the second paragraph, but it still wouldn't have dramatically changed how i felt, which is whelmed.

I don't wanna side with Lakshmi but it's just so sad to see all these immigrants making a mess of the market district. I took a walk there the other day, and im pretty sure i saw one of their females locked in a basement and what appears to be some sort of meth lab😱 i tried to bring it up to the Vanguard but they didn't do anything about it. I havent enjoyed Stasis Titan this much in a long time. Im having a blast with this so far lol
Yes! I only got to play a little bit, but Icefall Mantle finally feels GOOD. And shiver strike is a real ability. Going transcendent makes it feel nuts. 80% regen on “whiff” makes it feel like you can just zoom around and then also still use it for damage once you get to your target. Makes you wonder what it would have been like if they kept the time gate 😂
@@RegrettableDeed story delivery would've felt smoother, for sure. It's easy to tell that Bungie didn't adapt the story to the delivery: At one point, Eido says "oh you've been out there helping so much" when I hadn't done anything besides the intro mission. I heard that and it immediately broke my immersion.

They definitely cut the “steps” where it says “wait until so and so contacts you about an update on their progress” which subtracts 3 steps right there. Like you said, they also definitely cut out having to do an Onslaught run every week of the quest, another 3 steps subtracted right there. All in all, excluding the prologue, the act 1 quest length would’ve been 20 steps which is fairly on par with last episode.

Nothing really happend tho
@@rimurulime7039 yeah, but that’s not what I was highlighting. I was only highlighting the length of the quest compared to last episode. Nothing really happened in act 1 of Echoes either.
@@Quantum_MagnusI didn't finish the first episode so I'm not sure of it or not but I'm assuming we never kill the conductor?
It definitely feels like a few interstitial steps in the quest were removed, which in theory would help the pacing, but really has the opposite effect. Like after that first mission, it's just a solid 15 minutes of listening to NPC's exposit things at you.
And right in the middle, Eido says something like "wow, you've accomplished so much, we really appreciate all the work you're doing", when you're still just... starting and haven't left the room to do anything seasonal yet.
That indicates there was definitely a "go do the activities" step here, and that's where the week 1 'break' was meant to happen. But by cutting it due to backlash from Echoes, it just makes the introduction sequence go on twice as long because week 2's intro is bolted onto it.
It’s a case of revenant getting the short end cause it was pretty much done dev wise do this change kinda doesn’t fit with what we experienced for the past years where by comparison heresy is being made with that change while development is still going so we got this odd in between for revenants acts
Yeah it feels like the filler was cut out haphazardly Leaving the whole pacing to be fucked up however I been liking the season with actually having a loot grind and a fun activity (who can go wrong with more onslaught maps)
Lor!
It’s tough because it feels like there is no content at all and never is.
On the other hand, no I don’t want to play Onslaught 3 times to progress the story because that also looks terrible and that ALSO makes it look like there is no content.
Truth is… I like raids and dungeons so I’ll do those a handful of times a week if get a chance and once those are played out if I have time to game I’ll game on some different games… which to me is a win over “play Encore 3 times to get through story and at least 2 othered times to finish up loops ends like catalysts and purple glowy balls that talk.”
I still think this was the right move - it just highlights the overall weakness of the content delivery system we’ve been dealing with for years now.
I genuinely can't imagine this act 1 being split up into 4 weeks of weekly slop. There was just so little story
I feel like that’s literally what they’ve been consistently doing with the seasonal model though😂
I feel like this is what they were working on before TFS delay and it suffered a lot for that. Lots of this reeks of we didn't have time to do the normal stuff so we are gonna pretend this was intended all along
@@inkrot but they lied. They said echoes was small becuse of TFS but Revenant would be the real deal.
Actually episodes are worse then seasons, and longer
It’s obvious, you didn’t need to do 10-20 waves of onslaught. Didn’t need to speak to some holoprojector each time. You also didn’t have to do those patrol board missions after all the steps to end the week. So yes, very believable, this is how much content seasons have.
5:10 Also, I haven't played this in a long time, yet it's funny to me that regular dedicated players who haven't stopped are asking "how to make tonics" and it's literally just the same way I remember advancing seasonal mechanics like 4 years ago. "Upgrade green stuff, get blue stuff. Upgrade blue stuff, get purple stuff."
That's how rarity tiers work
@@richardbertrand9939 I'm aware. Though it's not really "rarity" if it's deterministic, is it? Almost like "rarity" is a rather overly simplistic, primitive system that lacks creativity and it could potentially be a reason why people are bored with this type of progression system being attached to an episode/season.
I'm just speculating here.

I like the fact that you can pop a salvation weapon tonic and go do any other activites in destiny 2 and get new weapon drops. I think this is a a big W
Getting to do other activities is nice but you aren't actually getting _more_ rewards. Gathering reagents is such a slog that it offsets any loot bonus the tonic grants. Tonics that last 40 minutes require reagents that take about 40 minutes to obtain. Less that 30 minutes of story gameplay with 20 hours of grinding a recycled paid version of a free activity. That's the whole act.
@@callmeshaggy5166 It might not solve the problem, but watching Esoterickk's video on farming the uncommon ingredients helps a lot. Just 20-40 minutes of farming those ingredients can fill out your missing formulae easily and allow you to gain the rare ingredients faster. But I see what you're saying and you're right, though by this point I've become familiar with that design philosphy of Bungie. Add system means add grind, no matter how minute the system.
The ability to play the entire act one at once really shows how little some of the seasons have done for missions/content over the years outside of just "play the new activity 5 times."

It's hard not to be disappointed by how quickly the story was to complete.
Obviously, there was the concern of completing everything and having nothing left towards the end of the act, but there's actually nothing to do with how little story there was
Which makes it funny that they even have it structured in the typical three act story structure when act 1 is more of a prologue, act 2 has the majority of the story, and act 3 brings it racing to a close
The thing that completely shocked me was the fact that bungie raised the transmog cap to 18 and lowered the price of the eververse set back to 15$. It’s a Halloween miracle.
It’s not a cross over set which is more expensive than a regular set. It’s why they do cross overs, so they can delay releasing them for bright dust and make them 20$

My fav part of the whole season is seeing/hearing all the material blitz by on my screen after finishing onslaught
Im not gonna play but im glad there are people like you that do. I may not be interested in the gameplay loop but the plot this episode intrigues me. Mithrax plugged up to a servitor. His neon colors changing from purple to that resonance color. The feeling of being tight on time (lorewise anyways). Interested to see how the story unfolds.
Episodes were so revolutionary and amazing that they got sunset after heresy
I kinda feel like the B-plot with tonics and fieldwork might be what the filler weeks would have been? Like, the whole thing with unlocking new tonics just... after crafting enough of the lower tier really feels like like it was originally going to be "Eido is researching new tonics with Eramis' help. She'll contact you when she's come up with a new recipe" and then they didn't have the time or resources to implement some alternative to that so they just made it "Craft 5 potions to unlock the next potion."

It feels rought to not really have story stuff but everything else they added is great imo. Plus the dungeon on friday. Quite happy with the sandbox/activity additions. The new GL has made me feel excited about a weapon for the first time in a long ass time. It was so short that I thought they were still doing weekly time gated when I thought they were doing away with it.
I’m happy they made a new social area and actually changed the tower so the helm is docked there it made the story a little more engaging for me
Personally it disappointed me. I was super amped up for the idea of the helmet being accessable from the tower space itself, removing the need for 2 separate spaces. Make the helm a sperate loading zone so they can do story stuff still, but make it walkable.
Though maybe it wouldn't be possible with cutscenes and NPCs and stuff. Idk. If it wasn't possible oh well, if it was possible and they chose not to, kinda disappointed.
Regardless the new zone is gorgeous.
@@traviswilliams2348 yeah i dont like how they did the helm, the new area is nice but I expected the helm to be accessible from the tower too. Or at least when you enter it that you have a view over the last city, now its just in a black box (you can even see the corners...)
I’m confused… I guess everyone is different but how was any of this engaging?
I didn’t skip cutscenes or anything like that and it was over before anything seemed like was going on. It couldn’t have felt any more detaching, IMO.
@@amorfati4927 it gives a meaningful change to the environment you can see in public instances. It isn’t another season where the entire story is in the helm and I like that they are at least trying something different

@@Thetrickstersss I've counted. Out of 14 steps, there are 8 of them where you just need to talk to somebody. Absolute peak
Thinking back to echoes. Cut out all weekly breaks, all forced seasonal activities, all destination trawling and it honestly doesn’t feel like the two are much different. I personally prefer this. At least this season we can get the story done without getting fatigued from activity monotony, instead only playing the inter-beat content if we want to. Feels like I’d already be sick of onslaught if it forced us to play it at every turn just to get this story done. The pacing’s definitely off, but I still think this is a net positive. At the very least it feels different, which is a plus.
Datto was right when he said we would just consume all the new content without timegating! 😂
I wanted to watch this to decide if I’d come back for the new episode but dear lord did Bungie lay off half their staff so they could convert that half of their studio into a recycling station? Thanks for the videos all this time Datto, I’ll stay subbed even if this is my sign to stop watching Destiny content as I won’t be returning
After watching the Halo 2 story via TikTok it’s made me realize that bungie really is a small indie studio atp. All the cutscenes they used to tell the story were recycled ones and anything new is 2D. It has no cinematic feeling anymore. The entire story they completely rushed over in literal minutes
the vault being anywhere makes me so moist
So now we are getting to the core of people's REAL feedback. Players don't want to keep replaying activities or more dynamic activity grinds.
What yall really want is more content of substance. Yall want more raids, more dungeons, more strikes, more campaigns, more unique missions.
Yes this stuff is a lot of work for bungie to put together but it has a longer shelf life then the throw away seasonal activities and brief campaigns that simply have us do said activity.
Yup - always knew this is what giving us everything up front would reveal. That there really isn’t that much to the seasonal (episodic - whatever) delivery model. It’s barebones and always has been.
"players dont want to keep replaying activities" and "raids/dungeons/etc have stronger shelf life" being used in the same comment as if those aren't directly contradictory statements lmfao
That's what interests me about the frontiers stuff personally. Genuinely unique activities every once in a while, and really tightening the core game to support it. Would much prefer that to a steady stream of slight iterations on the same 6 encounters, assuming they can deliver. Might actually pick up the game for the first time in a while to check it out
so if you compare bungies Lightfall content cadence against the timeline they prepared in there frontiers blog they are actually promising less content per year. They talk about having more free updates which is good but there is also a strong possibility we just start seeing more repackaged content.
I feel the throw away seasonal activities are a huge waste of time and resources, while they are fun for a while the quickly become repetitive grinds. The game encourages people to grind the fun out of playing Destiny. They then see declining participation metrics and repackage content in an attempt to re invigorate the veterans. This usually dosn't last very long and causes a difficulty creep from the bottom which has gradually made Destiny less and less accessible to a broader fan base.
Having more focus on creating a solid baseline in difficulty and then iterating on the core game, adding new tools for player to change and power up there characters, add more strikes, more activities go destinations, more secrets and so on.
Bungie has spent so much time trying to build a once size fits all content cadence and it locked them in to telling stories one way, it prevents there stories from actually building there world as much of it disappears to time.
I sincerely believe bungie is picking the wrong places to focus there attention with new mode modifiers instead of just making new content for said mode. If bungie has released 3 strikes instead of one players would have had more drive to participate so they could try out the new strikes and see what they like to use in them. Same for new subclass additions. Players get tons of new gameplay off new build options meanwhile something like enemy Banes ends up doing nothing to add engagement.
@@AGOGOATHOTHsorry was referring to throw away seasonal activities but I didn't specify.

I like the pacing of this act actually. I like that I got to experience all the major story beats at the pace I wanted to which kept me interested, I would’ve liked act I to be a little longer but hey I’d rather be interested than bored waiting a full week. It took us about an hour and some change and it was a pretty solid let down honestly but only because it felt like we got left on a cliff hanger. Im actually interested in this story. I was hugely let down when we smoked it already. And onslaught is still super easy with a good team.
Love how they said they wanted to cut out talking to vendor to go and talk to vendor just so we can talk to vendor… half the steps of act 1 was talk to eido then go talk to eido at the holoprojector then walking in a circle to talk to eido
so they take away the ability to craft weapons with limited availability but leave crafting on weapons that we will be able to target farm forever
Currently running full Stasis with a subsistence krait, tessellation, and icefall mantle. Most fun I've had with Stasis in a WHILE
It’s just complicated enough that it makes me not care about the whole season entirely. After the last what 2 years of pretty awful seasons except maybe 1-2 if we are being honest, seeing that it’s super short and repetitive and makes you track a bunch of stuff all at once is pretty ridiculous to expect anyone with a job and family of any degree to also want to spend time on this. Like dude it’s simple call of duty is popular cause it’s simple. Always has been always will. Ya it got problems or nostalgia whatever but it’s so easy to load in play a couple games and leave or take the same thing with even Minecraft for a PvE example. Yes it can get complicated but it doesn’t have to be. I can just get on play and leave without being forced to pay attention to 20 things at once that’ll go away soon anyways and don’t really give you much play time. Idk I like to complain if you couldn’t tell hehe
So basically we get a seasonal/episode activity which is a re-skin of a free to play activity, a quest which took less than an hour and the potions which are not to different from something like Solstice events. I do love this game but Bungie really need to step it up a bit, we've gone from something amazing like the final shape to this! The promise that was made from the switch from seasons to episodes is not looking to great at the moment.
what a throwback with the rare, blue quality reference
I like the tonics because of the ease of engagement with the system. Crafting them is fun and I’m going to craft my reward tonics anyways so I might as well boost my artifact.
Just glad the Tonics aren't a Burning Crusade Alchemy Discovery situation where it's a small chance per craft to get a new recipe.
The effects of the first layoffs already showing their mark on this episode, and I fear what the effects of the second layoffs are gonna be in the future
Hearing Datto say "Rare blue quality-" really have me flashbacks
"More Destiny out of 10" is hands down the best rating of this new season/act/thingy.
i love the call back to "rare, blue quality..." lol
They really need to either commit to story missions or quests. We can’t just spread out content across multiple areas and make each one several minutes in density. Eido’s quests are just patrol missions and the “major field tests” are essentially just the heroic version.
If what we got really was the whole of Act 1, I am sorely disappointed for the first time in a while. I usually don’t expect much, but we had one, ONE mission to do outside of learning how to make tonics. That’s it. No busywork, no nothing. I basically did everything we could do and was planning on ending it there and continuing later until I realised I didn’t have any new step anyways. Like.. what? Really?
The pathfinder bit, he does know his audience lol
Really wish they had leaned more into the “shinies”. Keep crafting for casuals but please let me grind out shinies (with unique appearances) that can ONLY be acquired during this episode. Gives me a reason to actually want to go grind out to get specific shiny rolls
Crafting isn't just for casuals. It allows people to actually get the weapon they want and then use it, as opposed to spending 90% of the season just chasing one roll.
Welp wake me up when “more destiny” becomes “better destiny”
This really makes we wonder how Bungie planned to stretch out Act 1 into 4 weeks. It was a week's worth of content at most and I'm not gonna farm Onslaught for a month.
It’s simple because they do it every season.
Fly to Last City
One minute of dialogue
Do Onslaught
Fly back to Last City
One month of dialogue
Go to heliprompter
That’s a week. Feels like there’s an hour because there’s an hour of Onslaught
This season is gonna get old real quick, Datto does not seem too thrilled about what we got...personally I already feel like this isn't gonna keep me playing
Hate pinnacle grind, hate no more crafted seasonal weapons, currently not a fan of the tonics system just being craft more tonics to get the next ones but it beats "go finish 50 vex and go pick some vex nuts from planetary materials idk?", and I hate that the stasis glaive was worded like it was just a vanguard weapon under nightfall so now I have to wait to farm it but you know what? We finally got a stasis legendary glaive thats the best frame for my playstyle and it has fire perks, we got sustained fire voltshot, and the space laser in onslaught salvation isn't just a reskin of the skybomber attack and it looks and sounds DAMN COOL. So I'd rate this season: eh 7/10 "too much water"
As a returning player in episode echoes, the new acquisition of getting new exotic armor is terrible because there are so many that I have to buy, just let them drop from activities or engrams, same with exotic weapons. I’m struggling trying to get ciphers to get all of them
Correct me if I'm mistaken as I have not gone to get new exotics in a while, but you can still farm exotics from Legend Lost Sectors (and they should still be heavily weighted toward a knock-out system?), as well as the Vex Offensive Public Event on Neomuna that randomly pops up (also on a knock-out system).
For the new exotics to this expansion (The Final Shape and onwards), they are what are locked behind Rahool's reputation track. You can also earn one new TFS exotic per character by completing TFS campaign on Legendary difficulty.
So if you're guardian is missing a ton of helmets and the lost sector is dropping helmets, you can jam on that for a while and hopefully knock out some you re missing. Not the greatest option, to be sure- the drop rates can be frustrating as you do the same lost sector again and again- but that is available to you. The Vex Offensive PE has a twitter acount as well as a Discord that you can set to notify you when it pops up on the map. I've knocked out a lot of random exotics I was missing that way (and it's more fun than a lost sector, imo).
@@kajus as far as I’ve seen online is that the lost sectors don’t drop exotics anymore it’s just exotic engrams, even though I think Braytech still says what armor drops
@@caderyals63 It looks like you're right, which is a real shame. I hadn't realized they added functionality to Rahool WHILE stripping it from the Lost Sectors. That's a bummer. Man.
One stealth thing they changed that I havn't heard anything about, was on PC you were able to go to your quest/director tab straight from your character inventory screen by a quick press of tab, now when I do that it exits my character screen and then I have to hold down tab just like when you try to orbit. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but having this muscle memory for YEARS to be just erased is very jarring. I don't understand why this would be changed intentionally if it was. It just slows down the pace of gameplay on PC, as the store, director, quest tab, etc are all interacted fairly often in game.
They confirmed on Twitter that it’s a bug and not intentional, they’re working on fixing it I think
@@delticOnTV thank you! I stopped twitter awhile ago and it only lets you check if you have an account!
Also happens on console
I just mass crafted the same tonic over and over, yippiii
It confused me so much because I thought that was all like week 1 material since I didn’t realize this season we were getting all the content at once
And then I got really sad :(
Still wish we could craft the weapons so I can experiment with perks instead of having to look up online what weapons have what perks, then drink certain tonics (drugs) and then run certain things in order to get a fraction of a percentage for the weapon i desire. I get grind, i get needing engagement, but this is just not it for me.
Dude bad juju is honestly fantastic now.
always has been ngl
@@albeertwsjeo2319 that’s so fair tbh, but man it feels even better now
never forget datto wanted the game to be the way it is right now…
If the title for this Episode wasn’t as cool as hell I doubt I’d be playing it at all based on my current experience with act 1.
I’m digging the exotic tonic.
SGA, the Ether Siphon buff is bugged. When the timer runs out, it will reset any weapon with an overflowed mag back to the base mag size.
I've tested this with reconstruction, overflow, clown cartridge, envious assassin, ambitious assassin, and the King's Fall origin trait. They are all affected by this bug.
I've seen very few people mention this even though I'm sure many people are experiencing the bug. So please spread the word.
Having 40 days of content be 1 hour of story + replayable grind is definitely "more destiny". I'll close out this episode, but I won't be back for episode 3 I don't think.
I'm very dumb for popping all my exotic engrams on Monday. Lesson learned there.
The only thing with the Stats for All + Voltshot seasonal (Episodic) pulse is that the origin trait works directly against the idea of Voltshot. If you destroy one of the Dark Ether charges it overfills your mag and prevents manual reload thus rendering Voltshot unusable.
I think the new exotic armor pieces should be rare rewards from seasonal activities that you can up the drop rate on by completing seasonal challenges. Idk if it’s possible for them to do that, but I think it’d be more fun than Rafool.
It is that's how seasonal exotics use to work before they shoved them into legendary lost sectors.
Datto keeps it real thanks bro!
Can we talk about the HELM skybox? Like for real along with all the UI bugs was there any quality control at all? This is going to be the most bare-bones season yet and I was around for s10.
As long as the dungeon is good im happy
Can’t believe people are defending how short Act 1 was. We were expecting to do the whole episode at our own pace, not a segment of the act. Plus, not 60 mins of activities that consisted of listening to characters for like 20 mins 😂
