@@OverlyCriticalAnime Is it because men are innately more competitive or because women have the disadvantage of dealing with people clutching onto opinions like this? That isn't as much a wild speculation as you think, either. In the case of chess, they play at women's only tournaments which are often treated as inferior to the more higher stakes competitions. My point is that even if you're right about the average male being better, which I doubt, it's irrelevant since this isn't a problem with genetics. I see these comments a lot, ive been to over 50 different venues for TCG related activities in my country. Nah women just don’t go to locals. It’s gross. There are players at mine I legitimately don’t think shower for weeks at a time. I played at locals Friday night and Saturday morning. When I came back Saturday my brother and I noticed at least 5 people were wearing the exact same fits from the day before. To make things worse, my wife and I swung by there that Sunday so I could grab some product and 3 of the guys were wearing the same fit 3days in a row!! This is a regular occurrence
TRUE But if you think about it for more than 2 seconds: For every event there's only ever 8 people reaching top 8 (or whatever topcut you might have). Majority of participants don't reach that far. So from this totally accurate and comprehensive scientific observation I conclude: Humans suck at YGO.
I'm honestly suprised on just how much misogyny and anti-lgbt sentiment there still is in the Yugioh community. I've heard of a trans person getting ran out of my locals because people couldn't get over the person expressing themself how they want, the Transphobia from that comment about Jess, and the entire Lofton tweet being discussed. These people need to get over themselves and like Team APS, I'm tired of hearing it. I'd imagine more women would be interested if the game didn't have the misogynist stereotype that Lofton made so incredibly apparent. There's less women playing than men, but that also means there would be more men who are bad at the game than women by that dumb argument. MBT was real for saying men can be bad too because on average, there's more men who are bad than women because women are generally uninterested in the game
Most women are just toxic beyond belief. Their simp brigades enable their behavior. Stop trying to claim women are these holy angels that need to be protected
It's honestly pretty bad how many transphobic people are in the yugioh community. This comment section is filled with it, Jess gets a shit ton of transphobes in the comments of her videos. I guess the problem is that the intersectionality of right wing "anti woke" men and gamers is a very real thing, so most transphobic assholes hang out in gaming communities, which sucks ass.

@IsleofCalm42069 unfortunately the game being an intersection between weebs and gamers means these troglodytes are entrenched further than a ball sack after a cold swim.
I think the number of players would make sense in a world where the only different factor between players is their gender, the real issue especially in regards to skill is that a female player will most likely drop the game way before a male one, players like Joshua Schmidt and Jesse kotton have played this game for yeeeeears and you do need indeed a lot of experience to be able to compete at that level, and sadly most female players drop the game way before they get to that level
Even in the golden era of old Ygo (which where you people constantly romanticize) they still suck at YGO. Other card games aren't much different. Almost all males especially top players.

Statistics are worthless here because you can frame them in ways to make any argument you want. If let's just say randomly 98% of players can't get tops and are "bad" and 80% of the sample are male we can also frame that as men not being good at the game either.
no... but whe wold expect a proportion to be kept. if girls are 2 % of competitours, one could expect them to be 2% of tops, but its not wat is observed
@olagarto1917 because the sample size of tops is unbelievably small. You're unlikely to see more than a top 64 posted, which at 2% is 1 person and is probably true for most events.
not realy, making the game more frendly to woman starts in recognizing the diferences in audiences. an these diferencences starts with the raw data: less women play, they win less proportionaly, play more pet decks, they compete less and wont try-hard as much.
What a weird take. There's like 1 woman to every 100 dudes that play YuGiOh. And not to mention, most people that play YGO are just bad in general, me included, compared to the good players. This game is hard as shit lol
I put my gf on and she doesn’t go a day without playing MD and even plays at locals from time to time with me but doesn’t like it as much simply because of the odors lol
I think there is also something to be said about the psychological effects of being a woman in a male dominated space, and the impact that has. I think this is probably less of a factor in MD, but going for example to a YSC, and experiencing a misogynist/hostile environment, can just have a detrimental effect on your ability to perform at your best. A similar thing has been observed in Chess, where even Top rated women would often make more mistakes when playing men than they would playing other women, so there is a good chance that a psychological effect like this might also be a possibility in yugioh. So while population is probably definitely the most important reason, there are other effects, some of which might explain why there are (if what these people claim is true) less women participating at the highest level from a relative point of view (taking population into account). People who argue like this have a forgone conclusion which they want to validate with motivated reasoning, and are just so incredibly intelectually lazy and incurious.
Ok, but do those statistics take into account trans women? I have some trans friends who play yugioh and are good at the game. I think the argument about all women being bad at yugioh is stupid, because both genders can be equally bad at yugioh. Just because you claim theres more of a certain gender than the other, doesnt mean that the other is bad. And what about the non-binary? Have you accounted for them too?
Nah the people who say women suck at yugioh are also the ones who can tell you what a woman is for some reason. You know despite the fact they've never seen a woman in person before besides their mom.
The first time I played against a girl at a tournament it was at NJ Regionals 2015 against freaking Ritual Beast idol 😭 She smacked me in a mirror match and there was a crowd.
I don't think they have any natural propensity towards being good or bad, just that there is less incentive for them to do so. Jess is incredible at the game, but I have been around the yugioh scene for a long time and don't know of any top cisgender female players. idk, anyone can succeed at the game if they try, it's just a card game.
I don’t even have to watch this video to know this shit ain’t true. There’s a quiet girl at my locals that only plays Marincess that constantly tops / goes undefeated against Snake-eye, Yubel, Tenpai and everything in between. I think I’ve beaten her once, our record is like 1-13 in bracket
Being a competitive Yu-Gi-Oh player already makes you sound like an incel and then, saying that women are bad at the game. this person isn't just that incel, this man repels women. Domain expansion no b******, if you catch my drift.
Only real way to answer this is to see if the percentage of women from the people that enter an event equates to the percentage of women that make it to top cut. Sure, less women top because there are less of women playing but that doesn't prove they aren't worse than men either. (Edit: check the comments, I did the math)
I crunched the numbers. Looking at a list of wcs2024 invites 12/250 invited players were women, that's 4.8%. after round 4 at worlds, in the top 28, 1 was a woman, that 3.56% . Realistically this is a very small sample so it isn't very accurate but still, statistically speaking, based on wcs 2024 alone, women are slightly worse than men at yugioh.
@@dark-kounoupidaki3764I feel like this data is flawed tho. Obviously the 5% is going to have a harder time making top 28 when the other 95% are men. It's less of a skill issue, it's more of a quantity issue. That also doesn't put into account if any of the 5% of women in the tournament face each other. If that happens, obviously less women are going to make top cut.
@@queenautumnween2796 do you not understand per capita? If 5% of the participants are women only 5% OF THE TOP CUT need to be women, so if in an 100 person event 5% are women then only 1 needs to make it to top 20 for the claim that they are worse than men to be disproven. Also, this isn't an elimination event plus even still I'm not counting the men that eliminate other men so that doesn't affect the results.
@@dark-kounoupidaki3764 What's interesting is that given the degree of precision that 3.57% is actually as close to 4.8% as it possibly could have been. 2/28 would have been 7.14% which is further off. So concluding that women are slightly worse using these numbers is pretty unfair. Obviously it's unreliable since the sample is so small but if there's anything to conclude from this it's actually that female performance is exactly what you would expect given the percentage of the playerbase they make up.
Isnt the reason why women duelist dont do well because they are more prone to playing non-meta, hell, they dont even play rogue that can compete with meta? They play what they actually enjoy which is different to what the guys enjoy.
We see similar distributions in other competitive games , ranging from league of legends to chess. The girls are less interested , play with less passion , and overall just care less about compeating
Lofton won 1 regional or whatever, never achieved anything relevant again and became a turbo grifter extremely quickly. Dude is a loser profitting off of other losers
Feel like I'm going to get hate for this and by all means, send it because even I think this is stupid. Could we also entertain the idea that there aren't that many girls getting into the game because there's not that many "cute" or stereotypically "Girly" decks/archetypes that do well in the meta and catch people's eyes? In my locals, we have a few girls that dabble in Pokémon(Both VGC and TCG) and near all of them have a similar story where their first deck or first team was all Eeveeloutions, Gardevoir, any cute Pokémon you'd see a girl trainer use in the games or anime basically, and then they jumped into the meta side of things once it clicked. Yu-gi-oh doesn't have that I don't think. Yes, the concept of "cute" and "Girly" is subjective, but in general I can't think of an archetype I could point anyone towards looking for this idea and still have a fun time at locals.
I'm a woman. Only started playing in 2015, casually at best. I have very little experience with the history of this game and alllll of the possible cards and card interactions. Knowing all of those things and having that experience is extremely valuable in a card game this old with a card pool so vast and complex. Some of these guys who have been playing since they popped out of the womb don't seem to understand how overly complicated this game is to the average layperson.
Why did you take "women are worse at yugioh on avg" and turn it into " all women are bad at male hobbies"? The OP didnt say that. Its pretty hard for women to good at somthing they arent generally interested in. Of the women ive gotten to play masterduel, 1/4 actually showed any interest, and she only wanted to play aesthetically cute decks, like purelly. My theory is that generally men are more into the game, where as women might find more interest in the live tournament social events. A rule doesnt stop being a rule because a there is an outlier. A eule doeant stop being a rule because it makes you feel bad.
the reason isnt genetic tho. its likely because of roles imposed on women where they arent encouraged to be competitive at a young age, and generally are pushed away from strategy games like chess, they grow up to not find such things interesting. i can guarantee you that if society was more neutral in female upbringing there would be more female gamers and yugioh players etc, which is actually kinda happening slowly.
@@zenbozic6184 so you think that if put in a vacuum, without social engineering, all interests would have an even split between males and females? I don't think that's correct. Socialization has a large part in the behavior of others, but it is not the only factor.

This is some insane mental gymnastics. You can say its “because there are more men that play” Or “because of gender roles and societal standards” Etc etc etc. But that literally proves what hes saying is right. He didnt say “the average woman is bad BECAUSE ______”. He said the average woman is bad. Which is literally just a true statement. As a side note, the average male player is bad at yugioh also (statistically)
You gotta love the old "this person is lying with statistics, and im going to prove it by telling you an opposite, but equally false, lie with statistics"
Never will. So many communities even tried to force women into said high level gaming or espots, even team based. They don't last very long. Many even quit in the early rounds. Even if the environment hypothetically perfect that even one was fixed, that won't change the fact majority of women don't care about competitive card games or Esports and gaming in general
So "by the nature of gaming hobbies" things are catered to men, but also women totally have all the same interests as men. Which is it? You're insinuating things need to be different for more women to be attracted to gaming/"nerd" spaces, so that things more align with their... AVERAGE interests (because Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon are just so masculine). Meanwhile all the guy said was that ON AVERAGE women are not good at Yu-Gi-Oh. Whether that is because of cultural trends or sexual differences (its some of both), its still true. Not many women get into yugioh and most that do struggle. So what we have is people just being mad at a comment that sounds too incendiary for them
men and women are not the same. they have different likings and thats completely fine. Why men prefer certain stuff like nerd or geeky stuff while women prefer other stuff? well, there are sociological studies that try to explain that but thats how it is. it is not good nor bad. its reality
I know it's not the focus but the question mark on Paul's tweet is so out of place that it makes me laugh. "I'm just... so tired of hearing this?" Is there a chance he's not tired of hearing this? Does he not know how misogyny makes him feel? Is it a complex emotion? People on twitter add unnecessary punctuation for dramatic effect so often it's starting to erode our initial messages.
You are overcomplicating things and interpreting the statement in a way that makes it look as if it doesn't make any sense. What the statement means is that if you take the whole population of females playing yugioh, then the majority of them are bad players.
Not many women play the game, and the ones that do are not that great. There are outliers, but for the most part they are not the top players. It’s not misogynistic, it’s just factual. Misogyny implies that you hate women and don’t want them to succeed, that is not what’s going on here. This is just people making an observation that is blatantly obvious. And if you say otherwise you are pandering as a social justice warrior.
Briefly: Having a smaller population doesn't mean that your rates or overall distribution will necessarily be different. In some cases maybe if top players drop out more this could be the case. More importantly the idea that women would totally like Yu-Gi-Oh more if society just had different stereotypes or more representation is unproven at best. It's also not an accident that men tend to be more interested in competing at high levels even without worthwhile rewards on offer. But Chris is wrong to say that women are worse at Yu-Gi-Oh on average; they're just less interested on average and maybe less interested in high-level competition at average. Which makes them identical to 99% of the population anyways so no biggie
but checking those statistics against the median average rankings of male players proves that you are full of crap and are just making things up to "protect the women" stop being sexist and stop white-knighting women who never asked for it.
Many never seem to understand this. They either gaslight or play white knight cause they refuse to accept statistics and reality of the situation. If their only argument is appealing to emotion, then you should never be taken seriously

I tend to find when people say things like "lying with statistics" what they actually mean is "drawing a logical conclusion that i disagree with (i will now interoret the same statistics woth my own bias in order to paint an opposing picture)". Not saying Lofton is right here, nor am i comtesting that he's a dickhead in general. But lets not pretend Stevie is offering balanced or unbiased views most of the time. Again, shoukdnt have to repeat this, I dont agree with nor am i defending Lofton.
Woman can't even beat anyone at pool. that doesn't require strength or too much brain power and still fail.
Trans women even do way better ta things they tend to excel at.
It just proves women have a massive skill issue and have extremely low standards and expectations.
Plus rather than getting good, they cry victim everytime unless it's trans women which they literally can't
@@OverlyCriticalAnime Is it because men are innately more competitive or because women have the disadvantage of dealing with people clutching onto opinions like this? That isn't as much a wild speculation as you think, either. In older games, like chess for example, women aren't in the top players because playing against men is frequently an intolerable experience--sometimes even unsafe. In the case of chess, they play at women's only tournaments which are often treated as inferior to the more higher stakes competitions. My point is that even if you're right about the average male being better, which I doubt, it's irrelevant since this isn't a problem with genetics. If we took the misogyny out of Yugioh, it would become a place where women could nurture their competitive spirit alongside us. Hope this helps.
@@cherrylk4188 Thats not how it works at all. You just cant take one thing out then it suddenly changes and now more woman are top level.
It would improve without a doubt but men would still dominate just from a competitive stand point.
Im not down playing it all. The major one is interest in the game or any game. Woman are just less interested in card games in general.
Its just comes down to men are more interested and more competitive with then woman. Its not that complex.
Kind of hard to determine if women are bad on average when woman don't play this game on average.
Must be hard to play well when half the venue smells like death 🙃

I see these comments a lot, ive been to over 50 different venues for TCG related activities in my country. The only time i ever noticed a smell (just noticed, not like repulsed by) was a YCS london with like 5000 people rammed into a single unit at the ExCell centre in mid summer, that got a wee bit musky but not unbearable or even distracting. This "TCG/TTRPG/Wargame players are smelly" narative just seems like a cope tbh, notice how you never hear any top players complaining they didnt top because the smell of someone nearby threw them off?.

You shouldn’t use your cloth only one day at a time, it’s a waste and is not good for them
And that is why they fail!! They lack the no shower powers
I regret ever picking up this card game. CURSE YOU, NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR SHOWING ME HIS COOL XYZ MONSTERS!!!
TRUE
But if you think about it for more than 2 seconds: For every event there's only ever 8 people reaching top 8 (or whatever topcut you might have).
More women might be interested if people weren't constantly overstating how bad the community is.
I guess the problem is that the intersectionality of right wing "anti woke" men and gamers is a very real thing, so most transphobic assholes hang out in gaming communities, which sucks ass.
ngl i agree with the comment and i dont think thats a woman biology is biology. However, i wouldnt run someone out of a locals or any of that BS. let politics etc be discussed and handled at the appropriate venue and time.
@IsleofCalm42069 unfortunately the game being an intersection between weebs and gamers means these troglodytes are entrenched further than a ball sack after a cold swim.
nah we need to take air resistance into account because the air at locals don't be resisting my nostrils
@IsleofCalm42069 Well put.
I saw a woman play yugioh before. Then the yugioh gx outro started playing.
Nah I'm fucking ded

Statistics are worthless here because you can frame them in ways to make any argument you want.
If let's just say randomly 98% of players can't get tops and are "bad" and 80% of the sample are male we can also frame that as men not being good at the game either.
no... but whe wold expect a proportion to be kept.
if girls are 2 % of competitours, one could expect them to be 2% of tops, but its not wat is observed
@olagarto1917 because the sample size of tops is unbelievably small. You're unlikely to see more than a top 64 posted, which at 2% is 1 person and is probably true for most events.

You know, by that logic.
I feel like anyone who just says this type of stuff should just get banned from the game ngl
not realy, making the game more frendly to woman starts in recognizing the diferences in audiences.

less women play, they win less proportionaly, play more pet decks, they compete less and wont try-hard as much.
@@olagarto1917 the difference: women shower and don't use pr0n mats

ive seen women do pretty well at tournaments its just very rare, would prolly see more women at locals if half the ppl knew how to take a shower
I think the real question is, why do we keep giving this guy publicity? All this is doing is encourage his erratic behavior.
What a weird take. There's like 1 woman to every 100 dudes that play YuGiOh. And not to mention, most people that play YGO are just bad in general, me included, compared to the good players. This game is hard as shit lol
My name should tell you what I think of women.
Lofton continuing to be braindead

i don't mind playing against women in yugioh.
Free W ... Of course you'll play them
Ok, but do those statistics take into account trans women? I have some trans friends who play yugioh and are good at the game. I think the argument about all women being bad at yugioh is stupid, because both genders can be equally bad at yugioh. Just because you claim theres more of a certain gender than the other, doesnt mean that the other is bad. And what about the non-binary? Have you accounted for them too?
Nah the people who say women suck at yugioh are also the ones who can tell you what a woman is for some reason.
You know despite the fact they've never seen a woman in person before besides their mom.
as a trans woman, your arguement is silly. we comprise about 0.4% of the population AT BEST, your looking at maybe a 1% difference.

I can't believe there's sexism and Yu-Gi-Oh 😂. You have to be the most depressing person to look at to develop an opinion like that.
Being a competitive Yu-Gi-Oh player already makes you sound like an incel and then, saying that women are bad at the game. this person isn't just that incel, this man repels women. Domain expansion no b******, if you catch my drift.
Its not that women suck, we're just at work while they go to locals.
Women were getting defeated by the playmats some people brought alone, so they made a rule to restrict playmats, skill issue if you ask me
This is very funny if it's a joke but I cannot tell

Women don't care about it, so you won't find them at the highest levels.
Never will. So many communities even tried to force women into said high level gaming or espots, even team based. They don't last very long.
Many even quit in the early rounds. Even if the environment hypothetically perfect that even one was fixed, that won't change the fact majority of women don't care about competitive card games or Esports and gaming in general
@@soukenmarufwt5224 Basically. In general, competitive hobbies and money pits don't interest women.

You are overcomplicating things and interpreting the statement in a way that makes it look as if it doesn't make any sense. What the statement means is that if you take the whole population of females playing yugioh, then the majority of them are bad players.
It’s a population issue. Not a big deal.
Briefly:
Having a smaller population doesn't mean that your rates or overall distribution will necessarily be different.
