When your tastebuds reset, sweet potatoes and strawberries start tasting like actual candy. Bananas taste like pudding. Apples taste like they're covered in sugar or caramel. It's insane and really satisfying.
I am 70. I gave up smoking in my 30’s and alcohol in my 50’s. By far the hardest thing I have found to give up is sugar. I still get cravings. It is a work in progress. 🙂

i quit sugar cold turkey early last year. it was hard working in a restaurant but i pulled it off for maybe a good month or 2 until i fell for a single chocolate chip cookie and it's been downhill ever since. was the best ive felt in my entire life, physically, emotionally, mentally. i decided for new years i'd try again and i'm officially a week in, wish me luck!

I am 67 years old and let me tell you it can be done. I would not say I went cold turkey, but I would say my sugar consumption was drastically decreased almost immediately. I did it because my blood sugar was creeping up every year and I did not want to become full on diabetic. I did not get the horrible cravings that I was prepared for, but I believe that had more to do with the fact that I cleaned up the rest of the diet at the same time. Lots of veggies and low sugar fruit, healthy fats like avocadoes and a few grains like brown rice and quinoa, and some organic chicken and wild caught fish. Whenever I got a craving I opted for a cup of green tea. Sugar for some of us is comfort and a cup of tea is a nice sub. I also started walking 6 days a week. This really seemed to help my body detox without the negative aspects of trying to quit sugar that I had experienced in the past. Now if I eat any type of sugar, it is just gross.
A nice feeling when our doc says we don't need to take statins anymore, I don't like sugar in tea now but have no trouble downing junk but rarely do knowing the consequences
I'm a bit younger and going through some challenges now, just started a new job with lots of free food all day, they say be social and eat with the team, then there's the stress, I can't do much cardio as my ankle is bad, so it's not easy

@@jethrox827 I know. I went to a networking event and afterwards everyone decided to go to a local ice cream shop to get some together. I decided not to go because I'd be the only one sitting there not eating, and it definitely caused them to view me as the odd man out.
I found that quitting sugar was harder than quitting smoking. I was only successful with both by going cold turkey. Once I have any sugar I crave it something fierce and can't stop eating. Cutting out all processed foods, sugar, and doing intermittent fasting has worked very well for me.
I did fine stopping sugar on my weight loss diet. Then the holidays would come and just eating one sugary item triggered the addiction again. So staying away from it altogether is best.
@@MF-ty2zn1omg yes. I've been reducing my sugar intake, and at one point I basically was only consuming sugar in my morning coffee, but I gave in to a candy bar and it almost unraveled all my work. Suddenly I was wanting junk food again.

How I quit sugar? Started caretaking for my mom who has dementia. Seeing what she eats everyday was mind blowing . All sugar and carbs. It made me sick to my stomach . Yes! Sugar is associated with inflammation of course and dementia! It also lowers your immune system for a few hours after you consume it! As an aside, my Mother had Alzheimer's. Towards the end all she wanted to eat was ice cream or pudding etc. I learned that as the brain shuts down, your lose your ability to taste salt, then sour, etc until all that's left is your ability to taste sweets and that's why so many people with Alzheimers only want sweet things. My father had just "run of the mill" dementia and he mostly wanted sweets too. But, that was mostly because his life had so few pleasures and he was kind of like a 10 year old. He wanted his dessert, damnit! His last year of life, as his health declined, we didn't deny him. Why take away his only pleasurable thing?
Yes, you're correct, there seems to be a link between sugar consumption and dementia. My mom had dementia also, and her diet was mainly sweets and processed food. Unbelievable how much sugary food she consumed daily.
Have you introduced your ketovore diet to your mom? There's so much information out there on how bad foods are that we eat. For some reason I keep reading comments that people think fruits and vegetables are the healthiest thing for a human to eat and they are not. Sugar is sugar is sugar and carbs aren't good either.
I’m not really a “sweets” person, so I assumed quitting sugar would be easy. But I was shocked to find that sugar is added in many savory packaged foods! This journey has encouraged me to prepare my own meals and keep things simple - which is great for the budget as well
For me, I noticed that if I dont have enough protein, I crave sugar so bad, but when I started to incorporate more protein, I dont crave sugar nearly as much.
I quit sugar and refined carbs like white flour. I kept ginger chews and black licorice for the first two weeks because they are self limiting, then stopped them also. My juice is now only vegetable juice. I found fruit smoothies spiked my insulin to 139 by themselves so am now only having them occasionally and cut out the bananas. I also got a smart kitchen scale that shows me the carbs and sugars in food. I have a friend who lives in a nursing home. I calculated all the added sugars the nursing home was giving him and it was 100 grams per day. A lot of it came from so called nutritional drinks like Boost with 22 grams in a single serving. But also the morning donuts and pastries. Laws should be passed to protect the elderly in nursing homes from excessive sugar. It is a much cheaper alternative for them than providing nutritious meals and snacks.
There should be a study on the effects of foods on nursing home and skilled nursing facility residents. I just recall certain foods made residence sick. If a bunch of residence are having tummy troubles, check the menu. Dairy? Spaghetti?
I Volunteer at a nursing home and when playing bingo, they give them Hershey's kisses for every bingo and until they get a black out so they're getting a lot of candy
Advice from a doctor who CLEARLY has never been addicted to sugar. I quit sugar a number of years ago - the addiction was ruling my life. Best advice I can give is: keep lots of your favourite (unsweetened, ie NO sugar) protein handy. Every time you crave sugar 1. drink some plain water 2. then eat as much of protein as you want. The first 3 days are the worst. The absolute worst. When you make it through that, your cravings will diminish. Do NOT drink alcohol or put yourself in situations that will tempt you to eat sugar or simple carbohydrates for at least 1 week. Obviously the longer you can manage this, the better. YOU CAN DO IT❤
I was pre diabetic last year. Now I only have sugar on the weekends and holidays. This has helped me so much. I only drink water during the week and eat pretty clean. It was hard at first but happy I did it
Had a sweet potato today that tasted like candy. Once you stop eating tons of processed foods every day, you realize that whole foods are pretty great and processed foods can even seem gross sometimes.
I have quit sugar in the last two months and have lost 30 pounds. It has not been easy because nearly everything you buy has some form of sugar added. My latest example is I purchased sliced roast beef from Costco. Ingredients: beef, water, sugar and corn syrup.

If you CAN get over the sugar addiction, you won’t need the new weight loss drug. If you can’t, you’ll need to be on the drug for life. I, for one, don’t want to be one of the old folks taking multiple drugs multiple times a day. I’m doing it. I’m 70 and off all prescription meds. I feel GREAT!

8 weeks ago I went cold turkey on sugar. While filling Easter eggs I actually shook and broke out in a sweat. Ate one skittle and it was a hit. That was all I ate. Made me go through withdrawal again.
I went to Europe last week and I was surprised at how it seemed like the chocolate over there (including M&Ms)seemed more “real” and less habit-forming!!! It was an eye opener for me. Makes me feel more sure that many U.S. companies are deliberately making sweets terribly habit-forming.
@@rameau1124 Same in UK. "Chocolate" (flavoured candy) is typically 30-45% cocoa and 50% sugar. Real chocolate has >70% cocoa, hence, less sugar, and has real cocoa butter, not vegetable fat.
Norway had their own brand og M&Ms called "M" that were just natual chocolate colored in a little candy bag like M&Ms were the 70's, but now the producer of M&Ms in the USA bought out the Norwegian producer, and now the M&,Ms here are bright artificial colors and the packaging is twice as big! It is so sad to see people eating an entire "family" size alone. So sad what corporations will do to get more people hooked on sugar.
The tongue is the major receptor for sweetness. Instead of saturating the food with sugar, it’s better to add a bit of sugar to the outside of the food to satisfy the cravings. Most of the time the added bit of the sugar needed to satisfy the sweet tooth is a small fraction. To get the same satisfaction from process food, the entire food is dosed with sugar. Agree on liquid sugar, it is saturated so that every drop is “satisfying “ the sweet tooth. Similar thing with salt. A few grains on the outside of food is actually more satisfying than a food that is saturated with salt. Bottom line, avoid processed foods. Add it at the table instead during the cooking regardless if it is sweet or salt.
To summurise the steps: 1. Awareness of sugar quantity in products 2. Awareness of the bad effects of the sugar 3. Reduce gradually the sugar to avoid backfiring, and start with avoiding liquid sugar 4. Satisfying sugar craving with fresh fruits 5. Distract yourself with something else when sugar craving come, like sleep, exercising, stress reduction, having healthy meal, drinking water. 6. Being patient and persistent. It needs 2-3 weeks for good result.
I am working on quitting sugar right now. I have finally come to understand (1) sugar is a drug and (2) I have a weakness for it and must avoid every single added sugar in the world. It helps that I now see it as drugs cos I avoid drugs at all costs. I can tell already I will feel 100% better without it. I will not be taking any drugs for this... I am also working on eating really good quality foods and balanced meals to help with the process.
Im three weeks into stopping cold turkey. You realise just how addictive sugar is when you completely cut it out. Its getting easier for me now and in fact, im quite enjoying seeking it out in ingredient lists to eliminate them.
I've been addicted to sugar in my tea for the past 5 years. I haven't completely quit all sugars but I have cut out all sugar in tea, I drink about 5 to 6 cups of tea a day, before I was adding 2 tablespoons to each cup. It's been over 2 weeks now and I feel an immense increase in energy!!!
I was just diagnosed with Diabetes had no clue , I had no symptoms I did routine blood work my glucose was 434 I turned 46 today . I had a bad case of Candida for last three months . This now explains why I can’t get rid of Candida it’s sticking around the because of all the sugar/ yeast . I am determined to reverse this !!! Started as soon as I left hospital I’m done with my affairs with Fruit juice , Soda , Sports drinks
I am so happy that I quit sugar years ago. Seriously, no candy , cake , donuts, pie, Captain Crunch.....nada. It is more repulsive to me at this point rather than a temptation.
I quit sugar cold turkey...and I will tell you that the cravings were worst at day 3...All I could think of was sweet things...cookies, brownies, etc. I have never been a soda drinker so that wasn't hard...but when you start to read labels, you realize that any kind of food that is processed at all has added sugar. I did find that Duke's Mayo was the only brand that didn't have added sugar (I used it to make my own salad dressings...because of added sugar). You can do it with determination. I also dehydrate fruit slices for snacks. They are great for when you have cravings.
I’ll share how I quit sugar. I contracted a cold virus in February 2017. Headache, cough, nasal congestion for a few days, including loss of sense of taste. Recovered in a week; however, my sense of taste returned in an odd way. I was unable to taste carbs, such as rice, potatoes, bread, sugar, chocolate, pasta, all baked goods. I literally was unable to taste refined white sugar. While at a restaurant, my son conducted a blind taste test using refined sugar, raw sugar, and those colored packets (pink, blue, yellow) of ‘sweeteners’. I was unable to taste most of them; however, the so-called sugar substitutes had a very chemical, almost poison, taste to them. I discovered the riper a banana was, the more of this ‘chemical’ taste I was picking up. Oddly, I could smell EVERYTHING. The only fruits that I could reliably taste were citrus and tart apples. I was able to taste ALL vegetables and meat, chicken, and most fish if I ate them without being slathered with sauces, or as part of a mixed dish. For instance, I can taste a grilled hamburger, but when placed on a bun, with lettuce, tomato, pickles, sauce, I’m unable to taste anything beyond the first bite. It’s as if my taste buds get saturated and confused. I can taste natural peanut butter, but I cannot taste peanut butter with added sugar or molasses added. Those zero-calorie and keto-friendly drinks/sodas taste as if someone poured acetone or ketone into them. I cannot taste chewing gum of any kind. I’ll go into a bakery with my husband just to inhale what is now just a memory. I’ll order a cinnamon donut twist simply to taste the cinnamon. I’m getting pretty good at knowing which bakeries skimp on the cinnamon, too. My doctor told me that this was most likely my ‘new reality’, and that it might improve over time. I’ve pretty much trained myself to just settle with the memory of what something once tasted like. I am unable to taste even the strongest mint flavor (Altoids, for example), although I know I have something mint-flavored in my mouth because of the sensation it creates in my sinus cavities. I walk into a bakery and smell EVERYTHING - pies, croissants, cookies, donuts - but cannot taste anything. I have discovered that if I toast bread, I can enjoy the toasted portions when covered with butter. I can taste bitter chocolate for a fleeting moment, and then it’s gone. Since 2017, my sense of smell has gotten stronger. When COVID came along, what sense of taste I was able to recover only got knocked back, although it never affected my sense of smell one bit. I’ve unintentionally lost weight because I eat mostly when I’m hungry, often because my blood sugar has dropped, sending me into a ‘jittery’, headache state. I also have to remind myself to eat because I realized I was losing muscle mass. The only true joy I get from food is the wonderful aromas while I’m preparing a meal. I’ve also discovered that any new recipe I try, I must follow the exact ingredients because I cannot reliably taste anything through the cooking procedure to alter the flavor along the way. It’s 6 years since I’ve entered my ‘new reality’ of taste, and although there are many, many things I cannot taste, I feel blessed for what I can taste. Happy that I can still smell everything, and that it helps to conjure up the memory of the taste of my favorite ice cream, pie, or chocolate mint candy.
I lost me sense of smell after a severe sinus infection (pre-covid). I still have lots of foods that just don't taste right...chocolate tastes burnt...guess that's one thing I don't have to worry about eating...lol
I'm so so sorry you have this as your new reality. I can taste but after a surgery my body can't tolerate more than 6 Gram of fat per meal or any saturated fat. I have a small window of food I can eat. Or I get extremely ill like stoke like symptoms. It's been 7 years now. I still don't understand how this can happen to our bodies it's not fun to eat or go places. Food is a big part of life. 😢
You might want to get a CAT scan of the head to rule out any polyps or tumors in the sinuses or the brain. I know someone experiencing dysgeusia (altered taste) "metallic" taste. A meningioma in the Cerebellum, 4.5 cm diameter was found pressing on part of her facial nerve. It took a diligent subspecialist to order a CAT scan of the sinuses after no pathology was seen by an endoscopic camera in the sinuses. The tumor was seen coincidentally in the scan. It needed to be removed.
I'm glad you made a video on this topic. A lot of health problems nowadays are caused by too much sugar consumption. However, foods that have high sugar content are more accessible and sometimes, much cheaper compared to their healthy alternatives. It's a good thing that you pointed out about awareness on sugar addiction. I think this is really important because most people tend to take action once they become aware of something. As a busy mother of 3 now almost four on a tight budget, so much of my sugar consumption is simply from accessibility. Most carby and sugary foods are cheap and fast. When its already noon and I’m getting hangry, its easier to grab the bagel than wait until I can cook chicken breasts or an omelette
My mom started mounjaro a few months ago, and pretty much instantly lost her taste for sugar. She tried some diet soda a few days ago and gaged because it was too sweet. Crazy how what you eat controls what you taste.
My father, retired family physician and self-professed carb afficianado, got an early type-2 diabetes diagnosis last spring. He quit sugar cold turkey. His inspiration ? Envisioning how high up the leg they would make the amputation. 😳 He lost 30 pounds and has lowered his sugar count to normal, non diabetic level. I'm doing my best to follow his footsteps !

I'm currently prediabetic, and have given up sugar because I've watched my obese and diabetic relatives stubbornly refuse to even consider changing their way of eating....and they're all dead now. Well, I quit "cold turkey." I became a fanatic about reading nutrition labels on foods, and found all the sources of sugar and eliminated them. I also quit all empty calories, like cheese, pasta, and starches like rice and potatoes, and anything made with flour. I built my eating around proteins and vegetables (which do contain small amounts of sugars, and vary depending on the vegetable.) with broccoli being the core vegetable. Just being hungry was worse than not having the sweets, I think. But I just immersed myself in playing computer games and watching UA-cam videos for a few days to take my mind off food in general. I'm very happy and much healthier to not need sugar.
What's wrong with potatoes? In addition to vitamins and minerals, they contain resistant starch and antioxidants that regulate blood sugar and boost insulin sensitivity.
@@Don2006 I'm not going to go on the defensive for every food I gave up. That's what I did at the time, and I thought of potatoes more in the fast food context than making them at home as healthily as I can. I'm always open to tweaking my food intake.
I agree on most part, but potatoes have a lot of minerals and vitamins on the surface. They are not empty calories, but you can get more easier cravings with them. Therefore I implement them cautiously in my diet like diary to avoid nutrition deficits like many vegans. Of cause not processed potatoes.
I went cold turkey with added sugar on my journey from 89 to 66 kg. The near constant dull headaches that I was popping Ibuprofen for suddenly disappeared.
I have recently started trying to quit sugar and I already found a trick to stop my soft drink cravings, I drink some water and the cravings start to go away and I don’t feel like soft drink anymore
Great discussion. Thank you. I quit added sugar, salt and oils after following Dr. Esselstyn a few weeks ago and believe me it took a while. First I did plain plant based diet. I never was a soda drinker. Fruit is my go to for cravings. Salt is something I am still having an issue with craving.
i finally got off my sugar addiction last year, i was 4 months strong until i needed surgery.. So after that surgery i decided to "reward myself" with a krispy kreme doughnut. ever since going cold turkey like i did before is almost impossible
I was a sugar fiend, or so I thought. A couple of months ago, I virtually eliminated added sugar from my diet overnight, and found it to be super easy. I was never one to drink soda, but I sure could polish off a pan of brownies, and I’ve found that staying well below 10g/day is quite simple. The idea of cutting out sugar really scared me, because everyone says it’s so difficult. If you’re thinking of doing it, just do it. You may find it’s really not that big of a deal.
I had severe chronic insulin resistance for decades. I craved an insane amount of sugar. I would go nowhere without my chocolate etc. I first corrected my B12 deficiency and hmmm lesser sugar cravings. Then corrected magnesium deficiency..huge drop in sugar cravings. Started omega 3..sugar craving GONE.
Whenever I eat sugar the best way to discontinue, is fasting (with coffee/tea/water) (it really helps with reset cravings) until I m hungry, and then eat (ketowise) meat/fish, and vegetables (but everything must be tasty!) and again some coffee/tea right after the meal.
I did this but with salt instead of sugar. I ate so much high-sodium foods all my life, it took me 2 weeks of eating very little salt for my taste buds to be able to finally enjoy low-sodium foods. No doubt this works for sugar too (i already dont eat much sugar anyways)
I quit sugar about three years ago for four months. Then I fell off the wagon and was back on it. But during the time I found carrots to be sweet - shows how much were used to artificial and real sweeteners in our foods.
Eat two fried eggs with broccoli. The fiber helps curb sugar cravings and the protein helps you feel more full which helps us avoid craving sugar. Then you can eat watermelon, cherries, apples and wean off of them if you can or want to.
I gave up sugar due to insulin resistance-PCOS a little over a year ago. I was so scared of the threat of the diabetes that I just quit cold turkey, and boy was the withdrawal phase hard! I spent about two weeks lying on the couch, constantly pukish, super hungry but unable to eat. I had started strong with the diet so at the beginning I cut competely all starches so also pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. and it was so hard to taste the real taste of food, without 'starch dilution'. Now, after re-adjusting my insulin, I have gradually reintroduced only lower-carb, whole bread and pasta but still no rice and potatoes. Mental+physical health are absolutely not comparable to before. I do use stevia-erythrytol to make desserts but am categoric on no sugar. I think giving it up is one of the hardest things I've done in my life and I am so proud of the change I've managed to obtain!!

I am finding success in a 'handful of peanuts' is helpful to reduce that 1st hunger pang, and since it is low glycemic response, it satisfies that hunger burst and helps in reducing the sugar craving throughout the rest of day. Agree that knowledge is key here. Go slow, think before eat. Eat in an order: veggies 1st, meat 2nd, carbs 3rd, sugar 4th - you will naturally reduce your carbs and sugar.
I'm a sugar and simple carb addict. I have to consciously shop while being mindful of not buying the things that perpetuate those bad behaviors. This works for me, and weight loss is a natural side effect to this.
I've eaten a lot of sweets all my life. I just finished reading Allen Carr's book "Easy Way to Quit Emotional Eating," and I no longer want to eat sweets. He explains why we don't really like bad sugar and why we think otherwise. Once you get rid of the temptation to eat unhealthy sweets, getting rid of the physical consequences is simple.
I'll tell you what worked for me years back I mix 1 tbl spoon of ACV in a glass of warm watter with a table spoon of raw honey. If I use any kind of sweetener it would be MONK FRUIT SWEETNER use it the same way as you do sugar. Real food with oatmeal
Its impossible to quit sugar 100%, its in everything. But at 51 and recovering from lumbat ADR surgery i decided to cut out all the excess sugar I.E. skittles, chocolates, sugared coffee (stevia from now on). Decreased my pasta intake on wednesdays, and sundays, more leafy greens and sakads, and my weight plummeted from 258 at 6"1, to 239. What a difference this has been, and its only week four!!!!
I was on keto for four years, using the "keto friendly" sweeteners, thinking all was good. Couldn't figure out why I was still having such painful gut issues (I'm slow on the uptake, I'll admit it). Finally, FINALLY figured out two weeks ago that it was the vegetables I was still eating---my body will no longer process them at all---and the sugar replacements. Went full-on carnivore at that point, but today learned my final lesson on sweet stuff. Made two chaffles and put keto-friendly syrup on them. Ate maybe half and wasn't liking them any longer. Within 15 minutes of the last bite, sure enough, the horrid, painful gut reaction hit, and hard. Endured several hours of pain and other unpleasant side effects before my body settled down. Lesson learned---zero sweeteners at all! Carnivore might not be the most gastronomically exciting way to eat, but as Mikhaila Peterson said, "Yes, I get bored with eating the same five things on a daily basis, but the alternative is far worse!"

I quit cold turkey once and felt like I had been hit by a truck. I started back during the holidays and notice the worsening (dramatically) of inflammation in my body. So I’m getting myself together and get back to cleaner eating.
It's important for people to change their diet when they take diet drugs, not take drugs so that they don't have to change their unhealthy high carb/sugar diet.
My wife has Lupus so keto (in our case it's more low carb since Keto is NO carb) is how we got off sugar in food. We never really ate a lot of sugar to begin with. Allulose and stevia is what we use as a sweet replacement. We still don't eat much. I would to point out that a lot of the meat in grocery stores has added sugar. It's crazy.
@@Livetoeat171 Sliced luncheon meats. If you buy a package of sliced ham for a sandwich, take a look at the ingredients. If you know the various forms of sugar, you will see plenty in the meat. This all stems from the effect sugar has on the brain. Let's just say sugar keeps you buying the product. Which is why bread in Europe had a definition and ours here in the U.S. does not. (by definition i mean legally. Bread in Europe can ONLY contain Flour, salt, yeast and water. Nothing else unless it's listed as that type of bread, so say honey bread, would have added honey)
May I suggest the Lose It app or one similar to it. You can check for sugar, fiber, carbs, and calories. I was shocked just how much sugar I was consuming, although I knew it was way to much. Having an eating disorder and Coco Cola habit, I needed to make changes. Lose It certainly has helped me to become very aware. Today I did a glucose test that was for the first time in 40 years under 100. The app helped me achieve that small milestone.
Recommending the weight loss drugs is a big red flag for me. I've heard of many negative side effects and I firmly believe the fewer drugs we ingest, the better off we'll be.
One simple way is to just stop period, if you have cravings just eat some berries, fasting is essential to help the diet, it will train you discipline. Get over the withdrawal symptoms, if you can't handle the cravings then too bad deal with it, go for a walk, talk, meditate, or exercise. You can do a hardcore stop it works and works best imo. Within 3 months you will be forever thankful and feel 100% new
I’ve been following something called the Autoimmune Paleo also known as Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) for a few years. It’s more nutrient dense and lower in inflammatory food options so I had no cravings, didn’t feel deprived, slept better, had more energy, etc.
I am on my sixth day. I feel really weak, have the whole time and today I am shaky as well. I went to get the maple syrup for my tea but chose the monk fruit drops instead. I don' want to take this either but I thought it might be the best of the two. I hope I can get through this day...Yes, sugar is a hard drug. Oh, I am 66 and have eaten Lots of sugar all my life. When I was not consuming any sugar or alcohol for about 2 years, I was in the prime of my health. Fit. Running regularly for the first time of my life. Great mental health and eating habits. Trying to get back to it…you said not to go cold turkey but that’s what I did last time…I just gotta do it because if I do it the slow way, I’m going to always look forward to the next sweet (and that’s mentally exhausting) 😅
When I think back I think I quit sugar cold turkey, but the more I think about it that isn't true. I had been cutting back on my sugar consumption for about a year. When I completely quit it felt like cold turkey, but it was probably only the last 1/3.
Intermittent fasting really helps. If you do the 20/4 hours of fasting, make sure you eat your meal (ie: dinner/lunch) before any snacking takes place. Only snack after these meals, it really helps reduce the amount of sugar you eat.
What is really weird - for me, anyway - is that I've practically given up sugar. I don't put sugar in my coffee or tea. I don't drink sodas. I try to avoid sugary treats. But on those rare occasions that I decide to treat myself with, say, chocolate or candy, I tend to pig out!! Why??? 😢
It can take a long time to 100% get over sugar addiction. I began in 2017. Even 3 years later I'd sit down intending to eat 2 squares of 90% chocolate (2 grams sugar) and end up eating the whole 8 square bar and maybe 3/4 -1 cup blueberries. Sugar fills pleasure receptors like crack cocaine does.
I don’t recommend the cold turkey route as this was my experience…I gave up added sugar in Feb 2023 going clean Keto on a Wednesday. First I felt terrible! Keto flu is a real thing! Then I suffered several months of Keto rash as my body cleaned up from my previously terrible eating habits. After 3 months, I felt amazing and I couldn’t drink a soda if I had to! (Blahhhhh!) The really super thing that happened is 23 pounds just melted away since Feb with only dietary changes. Feeling great makes me just want to move more! I think I walked around dehydrated most of the time previous to this one change. It was difficult at first to drink my daily water requirement. Now, I put lemon in my water and know that before, I would have popped the top on a soda.
Of course it's possible. I don't eat sugar unless it's one of my 5 grandkids' birthdays or Dec. I'm quite able to go back to not eating sugar after that " treat." Exercise and lots of water helps me with any minor and short-lived craving.
I am a sugar addict but, I have made the decision to quit sugar. I only made the decsion because I had a health scare. You can't tell an addict that it is not good for you to consume their addiction until they are ready to hear it. It will just go over their head and not penetrate. I am grateful that God got my attention in a big way. I realize that I cannot quit sugar cold-turkey but, I do want to reduce it dramiticly. i have made the decision to stop eating candy and cake, and ice cream. it has only been a few days. and my cravings for those substances are reduced, I find myself staring at the cakes and candy that are around me. It's weird. I don't want to eat it but I'm standing there looking at it. much like a dog is hyper focused on the food in your hand. I didn't realize that most of the sugar i get is from my soda. I thought if I eliminate those from my diet at this time i could move on to what I drink. I didn't realize that most of the sugar I consume can be found in my drinks. I don't think I can quit my soda and then the candy, cake, and ice cream. I know I can reduce what I drink, I had switched from coke to coke zero awhile back. and i was drinking less of my soda for a time. but when i ran out of lemon juice to put in my water I started drinking more soda again.
End goal is to eliminate all "processed" food. Sugar's high on the stack of the offenders. It's hard to draw a 100% clear line though. Are coffee grounds a processed food? Is Flour? How about a properly made cheese from a local farmer ? Best I've felt was on a healthy (near whole food) keto, while having sufficient sleep, doing some sports and keeping stress down. Funny thing is that each of these support / promote the other. Takes a good couple of weeks to get it all going properly, though... always a catch
Usually it's highly processed food that's really bad, not just processed. We've been processing our food for millenias. Avoid anything that's frozen, sugary drinks and snacks, and that's 80% of highly processed food right there.
I plan on going as cold turkey as I can. I know sugar will still exist in certain parts of my diet, but I hope to replace the majority with fruit and veggies

Regrettably, following this advice will lead to cravings that will never end. Sugar has been gone for me since 2015. You need to remove fruits, grains (and what the hell, vegetables too) to finally get the cravings to stop. People think I have amazing will power-nope, I just don’t want sugar anymore. But trying to just reduce sugar intake is quite difficult. Like saying you will only do heroine on Saturdays from now on.
When your tastebuds reset, sweet potatoes and strawberries start tasting like actual candy. Bananas taste like pudding. Apples taste like they're covered in sugar or caramel. It's insane and really satisfying.
Omygah, yes. Now, when I eat something with refined sugar, I find them too sweet while the natural sugars in fruits taste heavenly and “just right”.
Even vegetables like carrots taste so sweet.

I am 70. I gave up smoking in my 30’s and alcohol in my 50’s. By far the hardest thing I have found to give up is sugar. I still get cravings. It is a work in progress. 🙂

i quit sugar cold turkey early last year. it was hard working in a restaurant but i pulled it off for maybe a good month or 2 until i fell for a single chocolate chip cookie and it's been downhill ever since. was the best ive felt in my entire life, physically, emotionally, mentally. i decided for new years i'd try again and i'm officially a week in, wish me luck!

I am 67 years old and let me tell you it can be done. I would not say I went cold turkey, but I would say my sugar consumption was drastically decreased almost immediately. I did it because my blood sugar was creeping up every year and I did not want to become full on diabetic. I did not get the horrible cravings that I was prepared for, but I believe that had more to do with the fact that I cleaned up the rest of the diet at the same time. Lots of veggies and low sugar fruit, healthy fats like avocadoes and a few grains like brown rice and quinoa, and some organic chicken and wild caught fish. Whenever I got a craving I opted for a cup of green tea. Sugar for some of us is comfort and a cup of tea is a nice sub. I also started walking 6 days a week. This really seemed to help my body detox without the negative aspects of trying to quit sugar that I had experienced in the past. Now if I eat any type of sugar, it is just gross.
A nice feeling when our doc says we don't need to take statins anymore, I don't like sugar in tea now but have no trouble downing junk but rarely do knowing the consequences
I'm a bit younger and going through some challenges now, just started a new job with lots of free food all day, they say be social and eat with the team, then there's the stress, I can't do much cardio as my ankle is bad, so it's not easy

I found that quitting sugar was harder than quitting smoking. I was only successful with both by going cold turkey. Once I have any sugar I crave it something fierce and can't stop eating. Cutting out all processed foods, sugar, and doing intermittent fasting has worked very well for me.
Intermittent fasting definitely helps decrease sugar intake.
I did fine stopping sugar on my weight loss diet. Then the holidays would come and just eating one sugary item triggered the addiction again. So staying away from it altogether is best.

How I quit sugar? Started caretaking for my mom who has dementia. Seeing what she eats everyday was mind blowing . All sugar and carbs. It made me sick to my stomach . Yes! Sugar is associated with inflammation of course and dementia! It also lowers your immune system for a few hours after you consume it! As an aside, my Mother had Alzheimer's. Towards the end all she wanted to eat was ice cream or pudding etc. I learned that as the brain shuts down, your lose your ability to taste salt, then sour, etc until all that's left is your ability to taste sweets and that's why so many people with Alzheimers only want sweet things. My father had just "run of the mill" dementia and he mostly wanted sweets too. But, that was mostly because his life had so few pleasures and he was kind of like a 10 year old. He wanted his dessert, damnit! His last year of life, as his health declined, we didn't deny him. Why take away his only pleasurable thing?
Yes, you're correct, there seems to be a link between sugar consumption and dementia. My mom had dementia also, and her diet was mainly sweets and processed food. Unbelievable how much sugary food she consumed daily.

Have you introduced your ketovore diet to your mom? There's so much information out there on how bad foods are that we eat. For some reason I keep reading comments that people think fruits and vegetables are the healthiest thing for a human to eat and they are not. Sugar is sugar is sugar and carbs aren't good either.
I’m not really a “sweets” person, so I assumed quitting sugar would be easy. But I was shocked to find that sugar is added in many savory packaged foods! This journey has encouraged me to prepare my own meals and keep things simple - which is great for the budget as well
For me, I noticed that if I dont have enough protein, I crave sugar so bad, but when I started to incorporate more protein, I dont crave sugar nearly as much.

I quit sugar and refined carbs like white flour. I kept ginger chews and black licorice for the first two weeks because they are self limiting, then stopped them also. My juice is now only vegetable juice. I found fruit smoothies spiked my insulin to 139 by themselves so am now only having them occasionally and cut out the bananas. I also got a smart kitchen scale that shows me the carbs and sugars in food.
I have a friend who lives in a nursing home. I calculated all the added sugars the nursing home was giving him and it was 100 grams per day. A lot of it came from so called nutritional drinks like Boost with 22 grams in a single serving. But also the morning donuts and pastries. Laws should be passed to protect the elderly in nursing homes from excessive sugar. It is a much cheaper alternative for them than providing nutritious meals and snacks.

There should be a study on the effects of foods on nursing home and skilled nursing facility residents. I just recall certain foods made residence sick. If a bunch of residence are having tummy troubles, check the menu. Dairy? Spaghetti?

I Volunteer at a nursing home and when playing bingo, they give them Hershey's kisses for every bingo and until they get a black out so they're getting a lot of candy
Advice from a doctor who CLEARLY has never been addicted to sugar. I quit sugar a number of years ago - the addiction was ruling my life. Best advice I can give is: keep lots of your favourite (unsweetened, ie NO sugar) protein handy. Every time you crave sugar 1. drink some plain water 2. then eat as much of protein as you want. The first 3 days are the worst. The absolute worst. When you make it through that, your cravings will diminish. Do NOT drink alcohol or put yourself in situations that will tempt you to eat sugar or simple carbohydrates for at least 1 week. Obviously the longer you can manage this, the better. YOU CAN DO IT❤

I was pre diabetic last year. Now I only have sugar on the weekends and holidays. This has helped me so much. I only drink water during the week and eat pretty clean. It was hard at first but happy I did it

Had a sweet potato today that tasted like candy. Once you stop eating tons of processed foods every day, you realize that whole foods are pretty great and processed foods can even seem gross sometimes.
I have quit sugar in the last two months and have lost 30 pounds. It has not been easy because nearly everything you buy has some form of sugar added. My latest example is I purchased sliced roast beef from Costco. Ingredients: beef, water, sugar and corn syrup.
I find myself reading every label on everything I consume.
My blood sugar was 500- almost 700😢
In cutting sugar and doing healthy things I'm down in the 300s and going down.

If you CAN get over the sugar addiction, you won’t need the new weight loss drug. If you can’t, you’ll need to be on the drug for life. I, for one, don’t want to be one of the old folks taking multiple drugs multiple times a day. I’m doing it. I’m 70 and off all prescription meds. I feel GREAT!

8 weeks ago I went cold turkey on sugar. While filling Easter eggs I actually shook and broke out in a sweat. Ate one skittle and it was a hit. That was all I ate. Made me go through withdrawal again.

"Chocolate" (flavoured candy) is typically 30-45% cocoa and 50% sugar.
Real chocolate has >70% cocoa, hence, less sugar, and has real cocoa butter, not vegetable fat.
Norway had their own brand og M&Ms called "M" that were just natual chocolate colored in a little candy bag like M&Ms were the 70's, but now the producer of M&Ms in the USA bought out the Norwegian producer, and now the M&,Ms here are bright artificial colors and the packaging is twice as big! It is so sad to see people eating an entire "family" size alone. So sad what corporations will do to get more people hooked on sugar.

The tongue is the major receptor for sweetness. Instead of saturating the food with sugar, it’s better to add a bit of sugar to the outside of the food to satisfy the cravings. Most of the time the added bit of the sugar needed to satisfy the sweet tooth is a small fraction. To get the same satisfaction from process food, the entire food is dosed with sugar. Agree on liquid sugar, it is saturated so that every drop is “satisfying “ the sweet tooth. Similar thing with salt. A few grains on the outside of food is actually more satisfying than a food that is saturated with salt.
Bottom line, avoid processed foods. Add it at the table instead during the cooking regardless if it is sweet or salt.
To summurise the steps:
1. Awareness of sugar quantity in products
2. Awareness of the bad effects of the sugar
3. Reduce gradually the sugar to avoid backfiring, and start with avoiding liquid sugar
4. Satisfying sugar craving with fresh fruits
5. Distract yourself with something else when sugar craving come, like sleep, exercising, stress reduction, having healthy meal, drinking water.
6. Being patient and persistent. It needs 2-3 weeks for good result.
I am working on quitting sugar right now. I have finally come to understand (1) sugar is a drug and (2) I have a weakness for it and must avoid every single added sugar in the world. It helps that I now see it as drugs cos I avoid drugs at all costs. I can tell already I will feel 100% better without it. I will not be taking any drugs for this... I am also working on eating really good quality foods and balanced meals to help with the process.
I quit sugar because I thought I had IBS. I check labels. Now if I want sweets I only eat fresh fruit. All my digestive issues have been resolved.

I've been addicted to sugar in my tea for the past 5 years. I haven't completely quit all sugars but I have cut out all sugar in tea, I drink about 5 to 6 cups of tea a day, before I was adding 2 tablespoons to each cup. It's been over 2 weeks now and I feel an immense increase in energy!!!

I was just diagnosed with Diabetes had no clue , I had no symptoms I did routine blood work my glucose was 434 I turned 46 today . I had a bad case of Candida for last three months . This now explains why I can’t get rid of Candida it’s sticking around the because of all the sugar/ yeast . I am determined to reverse this !!! I am so happy that I quit sugar years ago. Seriously, no candy , cake , donuts, pie, Captain Crunch.....nada. It is more repulsive to me at this point rather than a temptation.
I quit sugar cold turkey...and I will tell you that the cravings were worst at day 3...All I could think of was sweet things...cookies, brownies, etc. I have never been a soda drinker so that wasn't hard...but when you start to read labels, you realize that any kind of food that is processed at all has added sugar. I did find that Duke's Mayo was the only brand that didn't have added sugar (I used it to make my own salad dressings...because of added sugar). You can do it with determination. I also dehydrate fruit slices for snacks. They are great for when you have cravings.

I’ll share how I quit sugar. I contracted a cold virus in February 2017. Headache, cough, nasal congestion for a few days, including loss of sense of taste. Recovered in a week; however, my sense of taste returned in an odd way. I was unable to taste carbs, such as rice, potatoes, bread, sugar, chocolate, pasta, all baked goods. I literally was unable to taste refined white sugar. While at a restaurant, my son conducted a blind taste test using refined sugar, raw sugar, and those colored packets (pink, blue, yellow) of ‘sweeteners’. I was unable to taste most of them; however, the so-called sugar substitutes had a very chemical, almost poison, taste to them. I discovered the riper a banana was, the more of this ‘chemical’ taste I was picking up. Oddly, I could smell EVERYTHING. The only fruits that I could reliably taste were citrus and tart apples. I was able to taste ALL vegetables and meat, chicken, and most fish if I ate them without being slathered with sauces, or as part of a mixed dish. For instance, I can taste a grilled hamburger, but when placed on a bun, with lettuce, tomato, pickles, sauce, I’m unable to taste anything beyond the first bite. It’s as if my taste buds get saturated and confused. I can taste natural peanut butter, but I cannot taste peanut butter with added sugar or molasses added. Those zero-calorie and keto-friendly drinks/sodas taste as if someone poured acetone or ketone into them. I cannot taste chewing gum of any kind. I’ll go into a bakery with my husband just to inhale what is now just a memory. I’ll order a cinnamon donut twist simply to taste the cinnamon. I’m getting pretty good at knowing which bakeries skimp on the cinnamon, too.
My doctor told me that this was most likely my ‘new reality’, and that it might improve over time. I’ve pretty much trained myself to just settle with the memory of what something once tasted like. I am unable to taste even the strongest mint flavor (Altoids, for example), although I know I have something mint-flavored in my mouth because of the sensation it creates in my sinus cavities. I walk into a bakery and smell EVERYTHING - pies, croissants, cookies, donuts - but cannot taste anything. I have discovered that if I toast bread, I can enjoy the toasted portions when covered with butter. I can taste bitter chocolate for a fleeting moment, and then it’s gone. Since 2017, my sense of smell has gotten stronger. When COVID came along, what sense of taste I was able to recover only got knocked back, although it never affected my sense of smell one bit.
I’ve unintentionally lost weight because I eat mostly when I’m hungry, often because my blood sugar has dropped, sending me into a ‘jittery’, headache state. I also have to remind myself to eat because I realized I was losing muscle mass. The only true joy I get from food is the wonderful aromas while I’m preparing a meal. I’ve also discovered that any new recipe I try, I must follow the exact ingredients because I cannot reliably taste anything through the cooking procedure to alter the flavor along the way.
It’s 6 years since I’ve entered my ‘new reality’ of taste, and although there are many, many things I cannot taste, I feel blessed for what I can taste. Happy that I can still smell everything, and that it helps to conjure up the memory of the taste of my favorite ice cream, pie, or chocolate mint candy.
I lost me sense of smell after a severe sinus infection (pre-covid). I still have lots of foods that just don't taste right...chocolate tastes burnt...guess that's one thing I don't have to worry about eating...lol
I'm so so sorry you have this as your new reality. I can taste but after a surgery my body can't tolerate more than 6 Gram of fat per meal or any saturated fat. I have a small window of food I can eat. Or I get extremely ill like stoke like symptoms. It's been 7 years now. I still don't understand how this can happen to our bodies it's not fun to eat or go places. Food is a big part of life. 😢

You might want to get a CAT scan of the head to rule out any polyps or tumors in the sinuses or the brain. I know someone experiencing dysgeusia (altered taste) "metallic" taste. A meningioma in the Cerebellum, 4.5 cm diameter was found pressing on part of her facial nerve. It took a diligent subspecialist to order a CAT scan of the sinuses after no pathology was seen by an endoscopic camera in the sinuses. The tumor was seen coincidentally in the scan. It needed to be removed.

I'm glad you made a video on this topic. A lot of health problems nowadays are caused by too much sugar consumption. However, foods that have high sugar content are more accessible and sometimes, much cheaper compared to their healthy alternatives. It's a good thing that you pointed out about awareness on sugar addiction. I think this is really important because most people tend to take action once they become aware of something. Thank you for making this informative video. I do hope this will bring awareness to many and be able to change their diet and eating habits. God bless and more power to your channel.
As a busy mother of 3 now almost four on a tight budget, so much of my sugar consumption is simply from accessibility. Most carby and sugary foods are cheap and fast. When its already noon and I’m getting hangry, its easier to grab the bagel than wait until I can cook chicken breasts or an omelette

My mom started mounjaro a few months ago, and pretty much instantly lost her taste for sugar. She tried some diet soda a few days ago and gaged because it was too sweet. Crazy how what you eat controls what you taste.

I've read (watched) experts saying to quit cold turkey. And I agree.
My father, retired family physician and self-professed carb afficianado, got an early type-2 diabetes diagnosis last spring. He quit sugar cold turkey. His inspiration ? Envisioning how high up the leg they would make the amputation. 😳 He lost 30 pounds and has lowered his sugar count to normal, non diabetic level. I'm doing my best to follow his footsteps !

I'm currently prediabetic, and have given up sugar because I've watched my obese and diabetic relatives stubbornly refuse to even consider changing their way of eating....and they're all dead now. Well, I quit "cold turkey." I became a fanatic about reading nutrition labels on foods, and found all the sources of sugar and eliminated them. I also quit all empty calories, like cheese, pasta, and starches like rice and potatoes, and anything made with flour. I built my eating around proteins and vegetables (which do contain small amounts of sugars, and vary depending on the vegetable.) with broccoli being the core vegetable. Just being hungry was worse than not having the sweets, I think. But I just immersed myself in playing computer games and watching UA-cam videos for a few days to take my mind off food in general. I'm very happy and much healthier to not need sugar.

What's wrong with potatoes? In addition to vitamins and minerals, they contain resistant starch and antioxidants that regulate blood sugar and boost insulin sensitivity.
@@Don2006 I'm not going to go on the defensive for every food I gave up. That's what I did at the time, and I thought of potatoes more in the fast food context than making them at home as healthily as I can. I'm always open to tweaking my food intake.
I agree on most part, but potatoes have a lot of minerals and vitamins on the surface. They are not empty calories, but you can get more easier cravings with them. Therefore I implement them cautiously in my diet like diary to avoid nutrition deficits like many vegans.
Of cause not processed potatoes.

I went cold turkey with added sugar on my journey from 89 to 66 kg.
The near constant dull headaches that I was popping Ibuprofen for suddenly disappeared.

Great discussion. Thank you. I quit added sugar, salt and oils after following Dr. Esselstyn a few weeks ago and believe me it took a while. First I did plain plant based diet. I never was a soda drinker. Fruit is my go to for cravings. Salt is something I am still having an issue with craving.
i finally got off my sugar addiction last year, i was 4 months strong until i needed surgery.. So after that surgery i decided to "reward myself" with a krispy kreme doughnut. ever since going cold turkey like i did before is almost impossible

I was a sugar fiend, or so I thought. A couple of months ago, I virtually eliminated added sugar from my diet overnight, and found it to be super easy. I was never one to drink soda, but I sure could polish off a pan of brownies, and I’ve found that staying well below 10g/day is quite simple. The idea of cutting out sugar really scared me, because everyone says it’s so difficult. If you’re thinking of doing it, just do it. You may find it’s really not that big of a deal.
I had severe chronic insulin resistance for decades. I craved an insane amount of sugar. I would go nowhere without my chocolate etc. I first corrected my B12 deficiency and hmmm lesser sugar cravings. Then corrected magnesium deficiency..huge drop in sugar cravings. Started omega 3..sugar craving GONE.

Whenever I eat sugar the best way to discontinue, is fasting (with coffee/tea/water) (it really helps with reset cravings) until I m hungry, and then eat (ketowise) meat/fish, and vegetables (but everything must be tasty!) and again some coffee/tea right after the meal.

I have mild type ll. Sugar craves sugar. If I have something sweet today, I’ll crave sugar tomorrow. This addiction gets easier with abstinence
I did this but with salt instead of sugar. I ate so much high-sodium foods all my life, it took me 2 weeks of eating very little salt for my taste buds to be able to finally enjoy low-sodium foods. No doubt this works for sugar too (i already dont eat much sugar anyways)
I quit sugar about three years ago for four months. Then I fell off the wagon and was back on it.
But during the time I found carrots to be sweet - shows how much were used to artificial and real sweeteners in our foods.

Eat two fried eggs with broccoli. The fiber helps curb sugar cravings and the protein helps you feel more full which helps us avoid craving sugar. Then you can eat watermelon, cherries, apples and wean off of them if you can or want to.
I gave up sugar due to insulin resistance-PCOS a little over a year ago. I was so scared of the threat of the diabetes that I just quit cold turkey, and boy was the withdrawal phase hard! I spent about two weeks lying on the couch, constantly pukish, super hungry but unable to eat. I had started strong with the diet so at the beginning I cut competely all starches so also pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. and it was so hard to taste the real taste of food, without 'starch dilution'. Now, after re-adjusting my insulin, I have gradually reintroduced only lower-carb, whole bread and pasta but still no rice and potatoes. Mental+physical health are absolutely not comparable to before. I do use stevia-erythrytol to make desserts but am categoric on no sugar. I think giving it up is one of the hardest things I've done in my life and I am so proud of the change I've managed to obtain!!

I am finding success in a 'handful of peanuts' is helpful to reduce that 1st hunger pang, and since it is low glycemic response, it satisfies that hunger burst and helps in reducing the sugar craving throughout the rest of day. Agree that knowledge is key here. Go slow, think before eat. Eat in an order: veggies 1st, meat 2nd, carbs 3rd, sugar 4th - you will naturally reduce your carbs and sugar.

I'm a sugar and simple carb addict. I have to consciously shop while being mindful of not buying the things that perpetuate those bad behaviors. This works for me, and weight loss is a natural side effect to this.
I've eaten a lot of sweets all my life. I just finished reading Allen Carr's book "Easy Way to Quit Emotional Eating," and I no longer want to eat sweets. He explains why we don't really like bad sugar and why we think otherwise. Once you get rid of the temptation to eat unhealthy sweets, getting rid of the physical consequences is simple.

Maybe you can start by throwing away any sweets at home. Perhaps a hypnosis app targeting weightless and healthy habit formation, could be helpful.

I'll tell you what worked for me years back I mix 1 tbl spoon of ACV in a glass of warm watter with a table spoon of raw honey.
If I use any kind of sweetener it would be MONK FRUIT SWEETNER use it the same way as you do sugar.

Its impossible to quit sugar 100%, its in everything. But at 51 and recovering from lumbat ADR surgery i decided to cut out all the excess sugar I.E. skittles, chocolates, sugared coffee (stevia from now on). Decreased my pasta intake on wednesdays, and sundays, more leafy greens and sakads, and my weight plummeted from 258 at 6"1, to 239. What a difference this has been, and its only week four!!!!

I was on keto for four years, using the "keto friendly" sweeteners, thinking all was good. Couldn't figure out why I was still having such painful gut issues (I'm slow on the uptake, I'll admit it). Finally, FINALLY figured out two weeks ago that it was the vegetables I was still eating---my body will no longer process them at all---and the sugar replacements. Went full-on carnivore at that point, but today learned my final lesson on sweet stuff.
Made two chaffles and put keto-friendly syrup on them. Ate maybe half and wasn't liking them any longer.
Within 15 minutes of the last bite, sure enough, the horrid, painful gut reaction hit, and hard. Endured several hours of pain and other unpleasant side effects before my body settled down.
Lesson learned---zero sweeteners at all!

Start diluting your orange juice fill you get down to 1 part OJ to 7 parts water (aka “H2Orange”).
I quit cold turkey once and felt like I had been hit by a truck. I started back during the holidays and notice the worsening (dramatically) of inflammation in my body. So I’m getting myself together and get back to cleaner eating.
It's important for people to change their diet when they take diet drugs, not take drugs so that they don't have to change their unhealthy high carb/sugar diet.
My wife has Lupus so keto (in our case it's more low carb since Keto is NO carb) is how we got off sugar in food. We never really ate a lot of sugar to begin with. Allulose and stevia is what we use as a sweet replacement. We still don't eat much. I would to point out that a lot of the meat in grocery stores has added sugar. It's crazy.

@@Livetoeat171 Sliced luncheon meats. If you buy a package of sliced ham for a sandwich, take a look at the ingredients. If you know the various forms of sugar, you will see plenty in the meat. This all stems from the effect sugar has on the brain. Let's just say sugar keeps you buying the product. Which is why bread in Europe had a definition and ours here in the U.S. does not. (by definition i mean legally. Bread in Europe can ONLY contain Flour, salt, yeast and water. Nothing else unless it's listed as that type of bread, so say honey bread, would have added honey)
Also, avoid flour, because your body treats it like sugar.
May I suggest the Lose It app or one similar to it. You can check for sugar, fiber, carbs, and calories. I was shocked just how much sugar I was consuming, although I knew it was way to much. Having an eating disorder and Coco Cola habit, I needed to make changes. Lose It certainly has helped me to become very aware. Today I did a glucose test that was for the first time in 40 years under 100. The app helped me achieve that small milestone.

I can't recall when I last had added sugar but it might help that I much prefer savoury foods to sweet foods.
Recommending the weight loss drugs is a big red flag for me. I've heard of many negative side effects and I firmly believe the fewer drugs we ingest, the better off we'll be.
One simple way is to just stop period, if you have cravings just eat some berries, fasting is essential to help the diet, it will train you discipline. Get over the withdrawal symptoms, if you can't handle the cravings then too bad deal with it, go for a walk, talk, meditate, or exercise. You can do a hardcore stop it works and works best imo. Within 3 months you will be forever thankful and feel 100% new
I’ve been following something called the Autoimmune Paleo also known as Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) for a few years. It’s more nutrient dense and lower in inflammatory food options so I had no cravings, didn’t feel deprived, slept better, had more energy, etc.

I am on my sixth day. I feel really weak, have the whole time and today I am shaky as well. I went to get the maple syrup for my tea but chose the monk fruit drops instead. When I was not consuming any sugar or alcohol for about 2 years, I was in the prime of my health. Fit. Running regularly for the first time of my life. Great mental health and eating habits. Trying to get back to it…you said not to go cold turkey but that’s what I did last time…I just gotta do it because if I do it the slow way, I’m going to always look forward to the next sweet (and that’s mentally exhausting) 😅
When I think back I think I quit sugar cold turkey, but the more I think about it that isn't true. I had been cutting back on my sugar consumption for about a year. When I completely quit it felt like cold turkey, but it was probably only the last 1/3.
Intermittent fasting really helps.
If you do the 20/4 hours of fasting, make sure you eat your meal (ie: dinner/lunch) before any snacking takes place. Only snack after these meals, it really helps reduce the amount of sugar you eat.
What is really weird - for me, anyway - is that I've practically given up sugar. I don't put sugar in my coffee or tea. I don't drink sodas. I try to avoid sugary treats. But on those rare occasions that I decide to treat myself with, say, chocolate or candy, I tend to pig out!! Why??? 😢
It can take a long time to 100% get over sugar addiction. I began in 2017. Even 3 years later I'd sit down intending to eat 2 squares of 90% chocolate (2 grams sugar) and end up eating the whole 8 square bar and maybe 3/4 -1 cup blueberries. Sugar fills pleasure receptors like crack cocaine does.

I don’t recommend the cold turkey route as this was my experience…I gave up added sugar in Feb 2023 going clean Keto on a Wednesday. First I felt terrible! Keto flu is a real thing! Then I suffered several months of Keto rash as my body cleaned up from my previously terrible eating habits. After 3 months, I felt amazing and I couldn’t drink a soda if I had to! (Blahhhhh!) The really super thing that happened is 23 pounds just melted away since Feb with only dietary changes. Feeling great makes me just want to move more! I think I walked around dehydrated most of the time previous to this one change. It was difficult at first to drink my daily water requirement. Now, I put lemon in my water and know that before, I would have popped the top on a soda.
Of course it's possible. I don't eat sugar unless it's one of my 5 grandkids' birthdays or Dec.
I'm quite able to go back to not eating sugar after that

Exercise and lots of water helps me with any minor and short-lived craving.
Don't keep sugar or processed/junk food in the house. That cuts down on most of the consumption.

I am a sugar addict but, I have made the decision to quit sugar. I only made the decsion because I had a health scare. You can't tell an addict that it is not good for you to consume their addiction until they are ready to hear it. It will just go over their head and not penetrate. I am grateful that God got my attention in a big way. I realize that I cannot quit sugar cold-turkey but, I do want to reduce it dramiticly. i have made the decision to stop eating candy and cake, and ice cream. it has only been a few days. and my cravings for those substances are reduced, I find myself staring at the cakes and candy that are around me. It's weird. I don't want to eat it but I'm standing there looking at it. much like a dog is hyper focused on the food in your hand. I didn't realize that most of the sugar i get is from my soda. I thought if I eliminate those from my diet at this time i could move on to what I drink. I didn't realize that most of the sugar I consume can be found in my drinks. I don't think I can quit my soda and then the candy, cake, and ice cream. I know I can reduce what I drink, I had switched from coke to coke zero awhile back. and i was drinking less of my soda for a time. but when i ran out of lemon juice to put in my water I started drinking more soda again.

End goal is to eliminate all "processed" food. Sugar's high on the stack of the offenders.
It's hard to draw a 100% clear line though. Are coffee grounds a processed food? Is Flour? How about a properly made cheese from a local farmer ?
Best I've felt was on a healthy (near whole food) keto, while having sufficient sleep, doing some sports and keeping stress down.
Funny thing is that each of these support / promote the other.
Takes a good couple of weeks to get it all going properly, though... always a catch
Usually it's highly processed food that's really bad, not just processed. We've been processing our food for millenias. Avoid anything that's frozen, sugary drinks and snacks, and that's 80% of highly processed food right there.
Be careful because most foods have added sugar.
I plan on going as cold turkey as I can. I know sugar will still exist in certain parts of my diet, but I hope to replace the majority with fruit and veggies

Regrettably, following this advice will lead to cravings that will never end. Sugar has been gone for me since 2015. You need to remove fruits, grains (and what the hell, vegetables too) to finally get the cravings to stop. People think I have amazing will power-nope, I just don’t want sugar anymore. But trying to just reduce sugar intake is quite difficult. Like saying you will only do heroine on Saturdays from now on.
