The balloons advance when "SURFS" is completed in the middle of the playfield. There are settings for the awards they given when you hit a ballon (points, extra game, etc.) Since mine is on free play at home, I have them collect 500 points every three balloons. Also, the balloons carry over game to game, so if you end a game on ballon 4, the next game will start there. SURFS letters are collected by hitting the blue mushroom bumpers. Other neat features are that the kick back on the left turns on when the first four letters are collected (SURF) and that the ball gate is lit to be opened by the roll over when the ring-a-ding value is at 200 or 300. If more SURFS letters are collected, the kick back turns off, and if the ring-a-dine advances to 500, the ball gate roll over turns off as well. Overall, the rules of Surfers are pretty advanced considering that it is all electro mechanical.
This is one of the earliest machines I've seen with an upper flipper. Ted Zale was the man!
