Hi from Greece. I finally found and bay my 73 BW13 and I'm waiting for the spring to finish the paint work on it. Really appreciate all your videos and the way you proceed every individual part of the boat, materials, paints, etch. Procedure is the key of a technician, shows the way of thinking and finally a fine finish of the project. Thank you for all you shared with us. Keep enjoying our BWs….
Thank you. I will be working on a 20 outrage and painting the top desk. Going to be a boat load of work, but from what I see, well worth it. There is just to much crazing and cracks to make a gel coat worth it again. Thanks.
I used ultratuff coatings 10 years ago in my whaler and didn’t like it one bit. A few years ago I applied the wet edge topside paint and it chipped off. So I think this time I’m gonna take it to a line x dealer and have it done professionally , but I’ll spray the outside with Alexseal ... hope your boat comes out fantastic
Thanks for the info. A lot of folks swear by awlgrip. The two part poly's seem to be the best as far as paints but wont work well over single stage paints. Hopefully this will hold up well! Thanks again!
Extreme DIY AWLGRIP has been around for a long time it is one of the best companies to use, but I’ve seen a lot of people online saying that AlexSeal yacht coatings is the number one choice due to the fact it has a 30 year warranty on it and that warranty is good for you have a professional sprays it on or you do it yourself so I think I’m gonna stick with the Alexia and I’m hoping they can get me that Boston whaler blue on the inside of my whaler
Now you've got me rethinking the hull lol. I'll have too look into the Alexseal for the hull. Was going to go with Totalboat two part poly but I'll have to research the alexseal before I do anything. Thanks!
Extreme DIY to be honest , the time I used total boat was decent. It applied Nicely, but over the coarse of a year I noticed a lot of small spider cracks and. It attracted a lot of dirt and was near impossible to get off. I even have the boat under one of th use harbor freight car port things and still got nasty. Now I plan to restore the whole thing. Gonna spend Atleast 3-5 weeks doing it right. And I’m gonna order mahogany seats from specialtymarine.com. Finally get me a top quality cover and still store it in the carport thing
I hear ya. I have kept the last few boats under one of those covers and It's amazong how much crap can still settle in the boat. You definitely need a cover, especially if you have trees on the property!
I think spray painting would leave the best finish! That is a skill all of it's own. I'm contemplating spraying the hull but will decide on that in the spring.
Getting ready to do my Boston Whaler and would like a list of primer paints additives you used in doing your boat. I’m in NC and I’m wondering if it was possible to talk on the phone about the job.
I'm trying to figure out what my boats already painted with (enamel or acrylic) put a sock soaked in paint thinner on a spot, and it didn't get soft or come off till about an hr later. Sort of chipped off didn't melt. Any ideas?
Hard to tell. If its a one part paint then you'll need to stick with one part primers and paints. If the old paint is a two part paint you can put anything on it. That's why I used one part paints and primers topside, Couldn't tell what I had as old paint and didn't want to sand it all off (which is another option).
I am getting ready to paint my boat inside and out. I noticed that you started with the respirator and then ended up not wearing it that much, so do you recommend a respirator if I am painting outside? Did it smell around your house afterwards or did the smell dissipate quickly? I have neighbors close by and was curious. Thanks! Nice job.
The totaledge did not seem to have a very strong odor. To be honest, I should have worn it throughout but hard to talk to the mike with it on. There was some lingering odor outside but not very strong. We have big enough lots here that neighbors wouldn't notice. If you're very close to each other they might though. SOme of the other paints like the two part epoxy barrier and the two part polyurethane have extremely strong and dangerous odors. I'll have a video out soon on that.
I'm late to the party. It looks great. How stinky is the Total Boat? I used Snow White Awlgrip on my 13' hull and it is scary stuff. I have $200 worth of it mixed to Whaler Blue and I'm procrastinating. I'm thinking maybe I'll use Total Boat. You have to cover every inch of your skin with Awlgrip and have an organic filter face mask. I still got a horrible headache from it and I don't get headaches.
The totalboat one part topside paint isn't very stinky but it also isn't as durable as the awlgrip which is a two part poly. I used Interlux perfection for the hull. It's very similiar to Awlgrip and had to use organic breathing protection. I wouldnt use anything else other than a two part poly for the hull.
I think it may have helped the paint flow and smooth better. I don't think it was really necessary though. Probably just thinning it with regular would have been enough. In retrospect, I probably should have done some tests with and without it.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy got it and thanks! Just got my boat completely primed yesterday. Gonna be ready for paint in the next week or 2. Just need to get a warm and dry weather window. Also, how much paint did you go through on the inside? Is 1 quart enough or should I get a second? I'm using TB Wet Edge btw. Thanks!
@@Smacker7474 Awesome, would love to see how it comes out. Thinking about creating a page on my website so folks can send pictures of their whaler projects. Thoughts?
@@ExtremeDIYGuy Thanks and will do... A page on your site would be awesome! I love seeing what others are doing and learning how they tackled certain issues that came up throughout their projects. I would definitely do it!
@@Smacker7474 Let me look into it. Hopefully there's a plugin I can use maybe do a closed forum or something. I've got to think on this one, want to do something useful and not klugey or difficult to use.
Extreme DIY Thanks. I’m hoping that the weather will warm up. It’s only in the 60’s during the day now. I have a garage to put it in to work but it’s harder to see when painting. Thanks.
Toxicity, you need positive pressure breathing protection. It's doable in a properly equipped shop, but not for the average DIYer. I've heard that the rolling method gives you a better finish but can't attest to that.

Glad I could help

Just wonderful video, thank you!!
Thank you too!
Hi Jose, your boat looks incredible.
How has the paint held up over the years?
Thank you
The new owner has said it has held up fine
Your doing great work 👍👍
Thank you it's much appreciated!

That looks awesome great job
Thank you! Cheers!
Looked Great. Hope mine comes out as well.
It will! Take your time and when you think you are done sanding, sand some more! Good luck.
beau travaille bravo
Merci beaucoup!
Nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
did you sand the floor of the boat where threre is the grip kinda stuff or did u just paint over it
Sanded with a bristle weheel, painted it and put two coats of Kiwi-Grip on it.
Did you buff the topside after painting?
What color interlux perfection did you use on the boat?
Charles, I used Mediterranean white.
Do you know where to get new Boston Whaler rub rail ?
Old style ? 9 foot classic.
Sorry for the late reply, here is where I got mine www.integritymarinecorp.com/boston-whaler
@@ExtremeDIYGuy thanks. I caught it in one of your other videos. Thanks again .

If it came off it’s one part paint. 2 part paint doesn’t come off after tapping something with thinner on it and covering with plastic for an hour.
If there was a two part polyurethane paint in that lovely color, would you have used that instead given its durability?
In retrospect, yes. Honestly, I would probably just use teh two part poly and get it tinted in teh future!
What type of roller did you use? And what size was it?
For that phase I used both a 4 inch and 6 inch fine foam roller
Hey, nice job..! where are you going to buy the white rub rail that gets glued to the gunnel..?
Thanks! Not sure yet. Probably Marine Specialties but will shop around first!
How much color paint did you use for the two coats on blue?
I used one Quart.

@@tomhalverson3438 Your Welcome!
I am currently restoring an 83' whaler right now and I was wondering how much paint and primer you used to do the inside?
I used a Quart of primer which gave me two coats and a quart of paint which also gave me two coats.

Was that raw plastic you prepped for primer?
It was either fiberglass, gelcoat or epoxy resin patches that were prepped for prime.
i like so nice
Thanks!
How do sand the non skid between coats?
I didn't sand the non skid between coats
how much do you think the petit performance enhancer worked? Is it def. necessary?
I think it may have helped the paint flow and smooth better. I don't think it was really necessary though. Probably just thinning it with regular would have been enough. In retrospect, I probably should have done some tests with and without it.

How much topcoat did you use on this project?
2 coats so roughly 1 quart.
Any non skid in the floor?
No, I am actually going to go back once I finish the Hull and put Kiwigrip on it.
What was the temperature when you painted? And how long did it take to dry?
I believe it was in the low 70's. I can't really remember how long it took to be non-tack but I believe it was around 6 hours

Should take long. 60's is the low range. Good luck!
How come ppl don't just spray it like a car?

It is pronounced "Pet- it" Not another word for small. They have been making marine paints etc for many many years.
Thanks for the correction!
When I’m asked to wear a mask, that’s about the same way I wear it...
Lol, I'm on the same school of thought there Scott
