Great video, the pictographs brought back some memories! Did most of the same loop by bike a few years ago... my video recorder died in Cochrane and over 2 weeks of footage was lost. Thanks for uploading this.
Thanks Jamie. Wow, I cant imagine biking that route but it must have been incredibly beautiful, especially Hwy 17 along Superior's shore. Shame about the your camera dying in Cochrane. We really lucked out with the polar bears there. They actually have you sign a waiver acknowledging you may not see them - the pens are huge and wooded. But within 30 seconds of arriving we had two show up, huffing in communication with each other, and we were the only ones there to see it. A great experience. Glad you enjoyed the video!
The part in your video where you said not to see the rock paintings alone was spot on! I went out halfway and realized what a fool I was... the chain is half rusted, the rocks are slippery and the waves are crazy... no one would ever find you! So many memories... seeing Superior for the first time as you head up #17, that will be in my head forever. My fanny pack with my wallet fell off on #11, between the last rest stop and Cochrane. I had one person offer me to stay at their house, another offered me money. All was good, the bank was open and they have a licence office there. In the line up, the clerk asked if anyone was there just to get a licence they could move up. Well, that's me! I move up and she says 'oh, I meant hunting licenses' I look back and everyone in line was in cammo and had Remington or Winchester ball caps on lol. Hey, I'm a city guy. Some of that trip got onto highway11.com, pics of the ghost towns north of Cochrane. Oh, and the fanny pack was picked up by a local right after dropping it. It arrived in the mail with everything intact, they never even took out a fiver to cover postage, just a note with a first name. If you ever boondock, I know some locations near Temagami if you're interested. I keep my trailer in a seasonal park there but there's a few lakefront crown land areas that you can get some pretty large trailers in. During the week you can have a lot of privacy with dozens of lakes at your disposal. Be glad to share coordinates with another camper. Even the park I'm in is surrounded by crown land, atv trails and canoe routes. I'm hoping to start making more videos this summer, I like yours, good editing in my opinion. edit - it's highway11.ca not .com... should've known that one, eh?
That's quite a story Jamie - you should write a blog about it! You're absolutely right about Hwy 17 along Superior's shores - so stunning - and most Ontarians haven't seen it! With regards to my advice on the pictographs - glad you agreed. I got out there to take the pics no problem but getting back that day was a very real challenge. the rocks were so darn slippery and I'm not as svelte as I once was so hugging the wall wasn't easy ;).While we have tent camped all our lives we've only been RVing for two years. We have stayed quite a number of times on unserviced Provincial Park sites but haven't actually boondocked on vacant crown land. If you have the coordinates of a spot, we'd love to receive them! Thanks again Jamie - look forward to seeing your videos!
I'm a noob too, just bought my trailer last spring. I'm going up in a few days just to check it out. it's in Happy Holidays campground in a seasonal site but they have some nice full service pull thru sites for short term. It's on what is really a private lake, their's is the only access. The whole area is surrounded by crown land. My email is jamiesathome@outlook.ca, send me a message and I'll forward lat and long of the off grid sites, too many people know about them as it is I don't want to post them publicly lol. We're going to build a few tent sites in the bush this year, and rumour has it that an atv route has been found to connect the different areas I'll show you... that means access from the north arm of Lake Temagami to the Quebec border :):):) I can't say enough about the area, there are sites at the end of pretty much dead end road, you just have to know where they are and where you can turn around a trailer too!
Jude W It is but keep in mind, this isnt a zoo. These are bears that would not survive in the wild. I recall the bear keeper telling us that one of the bears, Inushuk, came to them as a cub. His mother had been killed before she’d been able to teach him to hunt. Were it not for the santcuary in Cochrane, he’d have died too.
