  • Fried rice is a common staple in South East Asian countries, often made by stirfying meats, vegetables with chilled steamed rice. It's used to be the makeover of household leftovers, however, it's now becoming a popular comfort food. Hence, there are all kinds of different styles of fried rice recipes found in the rice-loving cities in Asia.

The second machine (the one dipping the cylinders in the batter as they turned) was for making "Baumkuchen" (German for "Tree Cake"). By repeatedly dipping the spinning cylinder in batter and then baking it you get a round cake with layers that look like tree rings.
The third machine looked like a standard tunnel oven

Misleading video as only 1 of the 4 foods shown was fried rice. 0:00 - 3:40 was 出し巻き卵 (dashimakitamago - like scrambled egg, but instead of scrambled it's rolled); 3:40 - 7:30 was the fried rice; 7:30 - 9:27 was the Baumkuchen, a German treat the Japanese love; 9:27 - end was a pastry/cream puff thing usually filled with custard (Japanese name escapes me at the moment)

When I saw that ' _fried rice_ ' maker, I almost said " *what kind of abomination is this?* " but I realized they were aiming for quantity, not quality.
You won't be able to get nice coating of oil/butter on each grain of rice with that kind of mixing machine. That's why those rice grains are clustered, not separated from each other.

The finished products looked like some kind of squashed rice cake with egg. It is not egg friend rice. Good egg fried rice must use overnight rice because part of its moisture would have evaporated overnight, and then continuously being thrown up in the air during frying while seasonings are added so that each grain is "fried" instead of being squashed, and that the grain would not stick together but feel fluffy in the mouth. Easy to say. Difficult to perfect.

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the *new*. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new: an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook." But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist *can* come from *anywhere*. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.

This is why I find it amusing to people who scream stuff like "dey took er jerbs" or some shit. Humans are very versatile. Imagine welding. It would take such a complex machinery to have a robot be able to perform complex welds, and at the same time able to crawl into some weird cramped corner to perform the weld. For things that needs just one job be done really well then yeah, we can have a machine do it. Whatever happens, the "last mile" will still be our domain. Having more machines wont mean we humans wont have a place
