@@cosoconvida6674 they're still friends, but that relationship wouldn't have worked out. They ended on good peaceful terms, which is a lot better than a lot of people.
Rose and Greg both gave it up for a mundane life on Earth. Both Lars and Sadie gave up their mundane lives on Earth and found themselves in space and music. That's what makes the stories different.
Fun gemology fact: The crystal structures of white and pink diamonds are identical, with the pink coloration arising from intense pressure of the structure. It's why she "blushes" pink. She puts the most amount of pressure on herself. My personal headcanon is that White wanted to make another diamond like herself, but put too much pressure into the process, compressing Pink into being "the littlest diamond" who somehow has all this extra power.
Also Obsidian 2.0, while mostly identical to the original, has Stevens clothing one one Hand, which ist funny, cause Steven does His laundry one one of the Statues hands.
@@jairoliradeamorimjr3262 the sword is also interesting, as obsidian has her own weapon, while alexandrite does not. meaning that rose and now steven are really what keeps them functioning as a group.
I don't think the line "I don't wanna run, I don't wanna fight, I just wanna talk!" gets enough credit because it literally sums up the show. They ran, it didn't fix the problem, they fought, it didn't fix the problem, they talked, and that's how the problem was fixed. It's beautiful.
I mean rose literally tried both, she ran and she fought, but it doesn't fix the problem, people who want Steven to fight the diamonds and even go on a full in war didn't realize that it had already been done and the results were nowhere satisfactory, many gems are shattered and those that survived got corrupted, they keep saying why not bubble the diamonds, as if those that are loyal to them would just stand still and not engage in a full on war to get their diamond back
@@Kyss111 Exactly! It is a metaphor rather than an actual guide on how to deal with dictators but it is rather cleverly shown. If the majority of their subjects think they're in the right, slowly dismantling the system and negotiating with peace is far more effective than violence.
Hell yassss! When I watched it was beautiful it was literaly what Steven Universe is about! Team maybe a little rush but it was marvelous for the time they have to out it together. And then I saw a lot o People get mad with the ending because they didn't have this great massive super fight defeat the main villian and save the universe, steven universe isn' t about that, is about love, self awarnes, disco ver new things, love yourself, it's like the first season when Steven though they were faghting with evil monster and later he find out they weren't monster, they were gems like them. Obviosly the gems didn't want to fight them but they have to, the same here at the ending, he didn't want to fight the diamonds, not fight White, but he have to, but no with punch, with words and a lot of people didn't understand that.
such a gem of an animator (pun unintended lol) he's so good. he also did work on some classic disney movies. he makes some real magic happen and the scene he did in this episode is damn good proof
I feel like White Diamond would've been a much bigger part of this season if it hadn't been cut short, I would've loved to see some slower personal development but alas
@@Cye_Pie yeah, at the time CN wasn't ready to take such a huge and proud stance on LGBTQ+ issues, and made an ultimatum to Rebecca Sugar (the creator) that it was either another season or the wedding episode
26:19 Garnet and Pearl’s reactions here is so heartbreaking to me. It’s a look of, “it’s finally over,” relief that in spite of all the pain and loss they endured in the gem war, losing all their friends and loved ones, that it was worth it.
Day of premiere, that face White Diamond made when she prepared to pull a Thanos on Steven terrified the shit out me for days. Then Connie screaming, the gem getting plucked, and the commercial break with the female voice-over asking the audience, “Is Steven okay?!” 😰
I know there was a lot of criticism lobbed at this finale for being rushed, for the diamonds not getting enough comeuppance, or any, for White Diamond not getting enough screentime, and not every plot thread being followed through with. but honestly? I liked it. They did what they could with the time they had, and most importantly: Steven finally has catharsis. His whole life he's been compared to his mom, he's been told he IS his mom, he's been struggling with living up to her when she literally killed herself to have him, and he's been struggling to understand if she's really gone or if he's just keeping her trapped. But now he finally has his answer. He's Steven. and he's always been Steven.
Agreed. I loved the ending. It was a catharsis much needed. And when you think about it, fighting a war for hundreds of years didn't help, running away for hundreds of years didn't help, just talking and listening helped so much faster. The whole point of the show.
Also the Diamonds do get comeuppance. It's called restorative justice. Rather than just dying or something, they now have to spend the rest of eternity (yes, eternity because they are immortal, unless they get assassinated they will be here until the heat death of the universe) making up for ever evil action they did. Their redemption arcs aren't rushed, they just aren't finished, because that's the point. They have to keep making up for everything they did and helping every still living person that they hurt for the rest of the universe's existence. People are just too focused on revenge to understand that retributive justice is never more just than restorative justice. Retribution puts the focus on the victimizer, while restoration puts the focus on the victim, where it should be.
I will say this. And I'm not saying that this ending is any less powerful than it is because my goodness did it get me good. (Plus worth it for them sticking it to the company and us getting the wedding. Because that is still one of my favorite scenes.) But Pink Diamond DOES appear to be within the diamond. We hear her sing her thoughts in the credits a number of times on how she sees herself looking through Steven. She is merely another entity within the diamond. Steven is himself but she is there. Her silhouette appeared when White took out their gem so the form still exists. Steven has small access to her memories. But she has sealed herself up and surrendered her life and gave it to someone new. Not that she can't see what is happening. So the Rose Quartz video tape still appears to be true even with this true personal identification that Steven is and always will be Steven. It's what he wants, AND what she wants. To be free to invent and create who he is on every layer of his own accord.
Two of the core themes of this show are “People change,” and “Fighting isn’t the solution to most problems.” Of course Steven wasnt going to bubble White Diamond
Unfortunately the message doesn't work due to flawed writing. The message of the show in a nutshell is that people should talk and accept others. It's about avoiding conflict and loving one another. That is the final message that Steven Universe has staked EVERYTHING on. Acceptance and talking things out. It's why we don't get a giant battle to bubble White Diamond because that would go against the big theme. And the show decided that preserving family is something they SUDDENLY care about. Did the writers forget about the episode about Marty who was Sour Cream's awful father? If you look at the entire story with all 5 seasons, this idea about communication and talking things out is bullshit because no one actually communicates in this show. Steven is the ONLY person that communicates, and unless it's facilitated by him, it doesn't happen between any of the other characters. So as much as it wants this grand aesop, its dependence on Steven makes the message feel incredibly hollow. The Diamonds don't talk to one another about their problems. Okay, they're the villains. This is the lesson they need to learn. Except the Crystal Gems are NO BETTER. We NEVER see Pearl talk to Amethyst about losing Rose. We NEVER see Garnet speak to Greg about struggling to raise Steven or being a bad parent. They don't communicate at the beginning of the show, and they don't communicate at the end. And while they reach a much better place at the story's conclusion working out their own personal issues, they do that INTERNALLY without input from anyone that isn't Steven. When the CG are fighting the Diamonds in "Reunited", we get the most obvious scene of this show's failure. What should've happened is that they look to EACH OTHER to find their strength rather than having to be REMINDED by Steven of what they're supposed to be. This show is built around Steven, and this is easily its greatest failing. Not the Diamonds' redemption. Not Pearl getting ruined by the Pink Diamond reveal. Not Bismuth getting bubbled. It's botching its own thesis because the groundwork for the argument they are making is flawed because rather than fostering it among many characters who improve their lives by leaning on one another, it made Steven the crutch that EVERYONE uses. Also, you can't reason with genocidal tyrants. No amount of restitution can ever pull the Diamonds out of villainhood. They are not misunderstood people waiting to be friends like SU wants you to think.
the way Steven shouts "SHE’S GONE!" is the result of all the trauma, anger, and pressure that the gems put on Steven with living up to Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz, with how every homeworld gem only seeing Steven as his mother this is the bottle exploding i really like the reunion of Lars and Sadie, they are one of the first characters Rebecca Sugar made since they showed up on the pilot pitch episode so seeing these two with both having hair color change is phenomenal
21:21 "It looks like Steven is dying" Well sure, in humans, mitochondria is what powers the body and that's gotten for the mother but in Steven's case his mom's gem plays the part of that half of his DNA. Without the gem, his body would logically start to breakdown.
Plus his body has just endured an at least hundred foot fall; there's no reason White would've just sat Steven's body down nicely after removing his gem
Alot of people weren't Happy with how they think the Diamonds wer "Forgiven". Since they are basically letting Evil Space Dictators off the hook. Although I don't really see a way to deal with the 3 Strongest beings in the Universe otherwise lol. Glad you guys enjoyed it & weren't put off by how rushed the ending was and can't wait to see your Movie and Future reactions!
I dont understand what people wanted. Did they want, Steven to go back on everything he stood for the entire series, and shatter the diamonds? Did they want him to be like original Pink diamond or Rose and physically fight every diamond and make them submit? The whole point of the show is talking about feelings, forgiveness and understanding.
I guess I understood where people were coming from but I also don't understand how nobody can conceptualize that Steven literally COULDN'T kill all three of the diamonds? And if he did, he would have started another galactic war with all the homeworld gems that were still loyal to them? Like he literally has to learn to work with them because there isn't a reality where he can just get rid of them and everything is suddenly sunshine and rainbows for the entire galactic empire of citizens they'd leave behind. Aside from the obvious fact that the diamonds are an analogy for an abusive family, and it's about Steven helping them try to come to terms with that and start to heal each other.... He didn't have a way to shatter the diamonds going into the fight. So why did people think he would suddenly pull out some sort of gambit?
It's the same issue people had with A:TLA's ending, thinking Aang was "weak" for not killing Ozai. Like bruh did they miss the entire point of these stories?
For the meaning of the show about family dynamics the ending make total sense it's just weird if you translate their galactic dictature into reel world political system as you can't fight a didacture or even the patriarcal system for exemple just by hoping that someday the oppressors will understand you since it's not compatible with their owns interest and you could even say that steven strategy doesn't work with parents that doesn't want to listen like the ones the last song suggest ("i just want you to know you could know me if you change your mind")
The obsidian theme goes hard as hell, sunstone too, and Smokey quartz, they’re all good but especially the obsidian theme after its 5 seasons of buildup
@@DrewDoesStuffOfficial I really wish Obsidian was ACTUALLY built up in the show instead of just being a statue. They should've mentioned the fusion by name and tried to fuse into Obsidian in the past seasons and only succeed in the finale. It does suck that Obsidian doesn't really do much as well.
barely anything makes me cry in cinema, but pink steven lighting up when they touch, that fusion sequence, has gotten me to the point of sobbing multiple times. still not really sure why it does that to me, but it's a work of art and I'm supremely grateful
I find White Diamond as a character to be really interesting. It’s said that she knows everything about every gem, as they all come from her, so the idea of her being wrong about Steven is so catastrophic to her sense of being that it completely breaks her will. Steven defeated White Diamond by existing.
If you actually pay attention and think about it, white diamond being that easily persuaded at the end actually makes sense. She was supposed to be perfect but when she turned off colored the most realistic response would be either sevear denial or being willing to listen because now everything she knew was wrong and she doesn't know how to handle it. I think some people were just mad because it wasn't the first response instead.
Exactly! There’s more than one response to that realization moment, other than anger and denial, it’s so frustrating that some people just never understood that. I’m glad white didn’t lash out, and that it didn’t ended in some battle, that would’ve been so against what the show was made to be
I’m jealous of the people who will stumble upon your account in the future and not have to wait every week for a new episode in order to binge the series. This was the funnest part of my week.
I literally just found these guys a few days ago when I got bored and decided to search UA-cam for SpongeBob reactions, now I'm watching their reactions to The Owl House, Gumball, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, their movie reaction playlist those are my favorite reaction from these guys so far.
steven universe future is more hated to be real, even if the finale of the og season is not for everyone, people would have been okay if the show ended like this
@allanasifuina896 agree, s5 feels like a good ending for the show, with the movie feeling like a good "epilouge". Future was just unnecessary and bad tbh
22:27 fun fact, the reason this animation is so smooth is because it’s animated frame by frame rather than by twos. Rebecca Sugar called in a favor and got a Disney animator who worked on some of the original 2d animation movies to animate that scene
rose literally tried both, she ran and she fought, but it doesn't fix the problem, people who want Steven to fight the diamonds and even go on a full on war didn't realize that it had already been done and the results were nowhere satisfactory, many gems are shattered and those that survived got corrupted, they keep saying why not bubble the diamonds, as if those that are loyal to them would just stand still and not engage in a full on war to get their diamond back
Preach! There was no "victory" to be had in this situation that wasn't talking with the Diamonds and getting them to acknowledge they needed to change. Even if Steven had miraculously been able to bubble or shatter the Diamonds- bubbling of which would require poofing them, and the closest we actually see to that happening was Yellow trying to poof Blue and it took long enough Steven was able to stop it in progress, which means the other Diamonds could do the same, and the other option of which would require the Breaking Point, which was not only destroyed but has no guarantee to actually work on a Diamond- we literally see in that shot after Steven tells White to leave her head that reinforcements were already there to check on the situation. Given how gem society already reacted to the "shattering" of Pink, there'd be a far worse reaction to White, Yellow, and Blue being taken out of the equation, and the Crystal Gems would've been hopelessly outnumbered. Plus bubbling and/or shattering the Diamonds defeated the ENTIRE purpose of going to Homeworld in the first place, given you need all four Diamonds to heal corrupted gems. There's literally no scenario outside of what did happen that wouldn't have resulted in even worse problems
@@eaglefan2569 thank you! Talking to the diamonds and making them atone is literally the best outcome anyone could hope for, taking out the diamonds would only lead to destruction, and people seem to can't see that and only blood thirsty demanding for revenge
just looking at jasper is enough, the amount of hate and frustration she had and she was a single gem, how many "jaspers" with mortal hatred of rose quartz are there in homeworld? there is a planet literally built on the basis of soldiers, even if pink really was the strongest in terms of powers, like a diamond and 7 gems could beat an entire planet+ 3 diamonds, just one aquamarine was enough to defeat the crystal gems, the number of gems with special abilities in homeworld must be stratospheric In short, it was a defeat by means of fighting
2:46 "how many times you locked her in here? How many times did you made her cry?" THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LINE ON THE SHOW!!! This show how Rose suffered when she was pink.
The Scene where Diamond Steven yells "SHE'S GONE!" to me was all of Steven's irritation, frustration and anger through the years of being called Rose and Pink Diamond, and MAN do I love it!
Honestly I loved the ending as a child, but everyone else hated it and said, "ofc the child likes the su finale" and I was like... YEAH I was the target demographic 😭 the SU haters jumped me when this dropped lol
I only just found the show and I still think the ending was awesome. The people criticising it are just missing the point. I can see how they'd interpret it like that but it's clearly not how it's intended and the messages they do convey are beautiful and that can't be overshadowed by some misinterpretation.
I was a teenager when the ending came out & I'm an adult now. I mostly liked it! The Blue & Yellow segment was weak and I wasn't a fan of Sunstone, BUT the White Diamond section and the beginning were *excellent.*
Okay, so what happened is this: Steven is a fusion of his human half and his gem half, and they both need each other to function. Human Steven needs Gem Steven to live, to have energy and hold himself together, while Gem Steven needs Human Steven to control his powers and emotions, and act like a human being instead of like a robot. They're the only human and gem who are able to fuse, because they're halves of each other, and that's why Steven can fuse with Connie too, because of his human half. What White thought it would happen, was that Pink was going to appear and that she was going to prove that Steven was just another one of Pink's foolish whims. Also, white was created to be pure perfection, we still don't know who did it, but whoever created the diamonds inforced in whites mind that she is perfect, and that all gems are a part of her. When she's shown irrefutable doubt that she's absolutely wrong, her whole world is shattered and she's presented with reality.
Acording to the wiki: "The Diamonds were to be eternally considered the most perfect, powerful and absolutely flawless Gems by virtually all of their peers and it can be assumed this was how they rose to power over the entirety of their species, using the influence they gathered to collectively cull a following of any "lesser" Gems. When the Great Diamond Authority officially formed, White Diamond established laws and rules to govern and essentially shape Gem society to her own design, an influence that lasted for untold eons all the way to the present." So my guess is: Gemworld naturally generated this "gem" species, eventually forming a single White Diamond, Blue and Yellow Diamond after that, and lastly Pink Diamond. And the rest is history
There's theories that gem personalities and stuff stem from their color, and in that sense White is perfect because it is every color, and every gem is a part of her. Perhaps whoever created White meant THAT, but White interpreted it as "Huh so I guess now I'll make a giant interstellar empire with rules to enforce my ideal of perfection. also all of you are me."
My favorite part of this finale is how you can recognize all of the uncorrupted Gems at the end. Like, not just Nephrite and Jasper; you can tell which one was the blowfish that attacked the volleyball game, and which ones were the heaven and earth beetles, etc.
I love this end and really hated the fact that CN made them rush it cause it was obvious that the diamonds still had more to them to be developed. White in particular had more to her than just "I have to make everything perfect"
Did you notice that Obsydian is the same statue next to their house where the mountain is? She was practically revealed in episode 1 lol I'm surprised they didn't notice/mention that.
It was always a doubt in steven's mind wether he was his mom or not, when white removed his gem and it reshaped as him it was kinda of a confirmation that he is his own person
There are so many scenes and lines that are callbacks in this episode its incredible. One I caught was how White Diamond described herself as how she is "supposed to know better, be better and make everything better" is the exact wording of what Amethyst says about Rose when shes talking with Steven in Fish Stew Pizza after the Rose is Pink Diamond reveal.
*Allow me explain the weird circumstances. (SPOILER FREE EXPLANATION)* A regular Steven Universe season has an episode pickup of 25/26, with the exception of season 1 since it consisted of 2 pickups. During the entire show's lifespan Cartoon Network had been trying to sabotage Steven Universe due to its themes, but the show was too strong and brought them too much money, until season 5's production; Rebecca Sugar (The creator) had been trying to do a Ruby and Sapphire marriage since season 3, but had to go through hell and back, specially since same-sex marriage was still illegal in the US, but when it turned legal, Rebecca put her foot down demanding that season 5 had the marriage, they agreed, and cancelled the show, making the 23rd/24th episode of Steven Universe "Reunited" the last of the season and the series, due to the imminent budget cuts the show would receive from international homophobic countries. But Rebecca Sugar demanded the 5/8 extra episodes to conclude the series and if she was lucky, a movie finale, she unexpectedly got both, the episodes became part of the "Diamond Days" event, and concluded the original series, and they had the movie to continue whatever narrative they desired, but Cartoon Network has a rule, *THEY WILL NOT HAVE A MOVIE UNLESS ITS TO PROMOTE MORE SHOW,* so they greenlit Steven Universe Future, a 20 episode limited epilogue series. So yah, they cancelled the fucking show, struggled to give them another 5 episodes but had no trouble giving them a movie and 20 more eps, this world is so weird
30:30 "Pink diamond/Rose did it's not like she did everything perfect. Is everyone gonna hold everything against her forever?" It's funny you say that because yes, yes the fans do and often more than they do the other diamonds! ... This is really unfair when you think about it because every other gem had help learning to do the right thing, but Pink taught herself (Greg also helped but it was at the end of her life). It's not brought up much but she must have always been kinder than the other diamonds because the pebbles were scared till Steven said "thank you" to them and they all knew he was Pink.
I agree, especially since most of her mistakes happened while she was either the victim in a abusive household, or during a literal 100 year long war. Very traumatic and in all that time only 4 people were seriously wronged by her. Still horrible, but it's the best she could do in a bad situation. And still come out better.
Yeah a lot of people were (and still are I think lol) mad that White Diamond wasn’t shattered as punishment for her crimes… even though the Diamond arc (and the show at large) was really more about healing broken families than it was defeating imperialist dictatorships. I do agree with criticisms that the finale felt rushed (they really didn’t have a choice since they were being cancelled), but I’ve always found it funny that some people just… wanted the show to be about something completely different. Go read Animorphs or something lmao.
Steven's identity crisis really hit home for young queer people (myself included) - and especially trans and non-binary people. Steven knew who he was inside, but being surrounded by guardians like the Diamonds who are so powerful and all-knowing, can instill so much doubt. "You do not look like this, you do not sound like this, you're just acting like a child." "I only want you to be yourself. If you can't do that, I'll do it for you." Constantly being told by them that how he identified, how he looked, how he behaved was wrong or childish or just not possible. Coupled with being not quite human and not quite gem, you could see hints of his inner turmoil throughout the show, but especially in the final few episodes. The whole show focused on Steven's journey of self-discovery. And this finale brought me to tears with pride that Steven finally knows for certain who he is. "I'm me. I've always been me."
The progession of Steven being a transgender allegory was one of my favorite aspects of the show and I'm glad that other people see it too 😅 it really spoke to me as a queer person trying to figure out my gender and sexuality
13:41 This foot smash was a commercial break when it aired on live TV. I was super scared and kinda furious when it happened. Just wanted to let everyone know.
20:51 another agonizing commercial break during the broadcast on cable. The crew was kinda sick for doing this cliffhanger commercial break thing twice in the final episode.
One of my favorite parts of this episode is that Bismuth specifically reforged Rose's sword for Connie. As well as Pearl and Connie hugging. I've mentioned it before but one of the sweetest subtle things is that after Steven and Connie fused the first time the Crystal Gems treat her like family.
CN loved to do bingo cards for big SU events. Most of them were normal, with a mix of stuff real and fake, but the bingo card they did for Change Your Mind (also called the Battle of Heart and Mind) was entirely true. All 25 squares came true. They really had us going with this one! Giant Mecha Battle - the Diamonds' ships combined Pink Diamond Flashback - the episode opens with it White Diamond Powers - projection much? Pebbles - they only show up briefly when Steven and Connie get changed back into their normal clothes Jasper Returns - right at the end and she doesn't get a speaking role but she's there Diamond Fight - Yellow vs Blue "If Every Porkchop Were Perfect..." - changes Yellow's mind Steven Takes a Bubble Bath - technically true lol Connie Versus Pearl - in White's ship, Pearl is possessed Steven and Garnet Fuse - meet Sunstone! Lars Meets Lion - really an emotional connection Steven and Pearl Fuse - meet Rainbow Quartz 2.0! Free: New Song - we got three: Let Me Ska My Van Into Your Heart; We Are the Crystal Gems (CYM Version); Change Your Mind Blue Diamond Cries - kind of a given but yeah Steven Uses a New Power - fusing with poofed Gems! A Giant Woman - OBSIDIAN!!! Aka the Temple! Someone Breaks Out Of Jail - right away pretty much Bungacowa! - Sunstone says it as they're climbing the mech An Out Of Body Experience - Steven is separated from his Gem Alien Creature - that wormy dude at the beginning Someone Breaks the Fourth Wall - "Now remember kids, if you ever have to deal with a bully, be sure to tell an adult" -Sunstone Peridot, Savior of Homeworld - "I, Peridot, return not as your servant, but as your SAVIOR! I rule the skies!" -Peridot Yellow Diamond Cries - that's not Blue's power, honey Someone Gets a New Look - not just someONE: Amethyst, Pearl, Garnet, Lapis, Peridot, Sadie, and Jasper all get new looks! Steven and Amethyst Fuse - Steven discovers a new power with this one
Before this episode came out they put out a bingo card full of things like "Bungacowa!" and such that seemed unusual in preparation. Then the episode came out and the card was full by the end.
6:06 Same. That's the only fusion I wanted from the ending ESPECIALLY since Blue Diamond had beef with Garnet, her fusing would allow her to open up to the rest of the Crystal Gems
fun fact, on one of obsidian 2.0's hands is Steven's clothes as a reference to the fact he cleans his clothes on one of obsidian 1.0's hands at the temple and also garnet's rings.
Oh boy, I remember exactly when this episode came out, what a time to be alive man, they announced the movie some moths afterwards, but before that at the time some people including myself was desperate to know if the series had ended or not
I remember a lot of people being really upset when this episode came out as there were a lot of fans that were angry that Rose didn’t come back when Steven’s gem was removed. Back then there were a lot of people that desperately wanted there to be a way for Rose, even getting into actual arguments when others tried to say there wasn’t going to be. Many fans were angry when this didn’t happen, and completely missed the point of the message. Rose coming back was never a possibility, even one of the writers of the story said that if Steven had died, the gem would cease working and die too. Not only that but you have the Gem literally saying “She’s gone” meaning Rose, meaning that Rose has been gone since the day Steven was born. The Gem may have had some repressed memories of Pink/Rose, but it wasn’t Pink anymore. The lesson that a lot of people back then failed to really grasp is that Steven isn’t his mother or Pink Diamond, Steven’s just Steven and the gem is his, not Rose or Pink Diamond, but his, he just happened to inherit his moms powers.
People who either haven't watched this show or haven't seen it in a long time have this misconception that Steven solves all his problems with crying and paragraph long speeches about why you should stop being evil, and how easily he forgave the diamonds. But if you rewatch the last few episodes, the movie, and future you'll realize how wrong that is, he'll give you a chance to stop but he's not gonna throw paragraph speeches and cry the entire time, he's gonna throw hands
A vast majority of his encounters with gems do actually result in fights. He's had a really poor talk streak with Jasper, Aquamarine, and Eyeball as example; only getting through to Jasper through violence, and Aquamarine and Eyeball actually still hate Steven even though he's kicked their asses a few times. Malachite couldn't be talked down, the shard monsters weren't negotiable, it took Steven getting knocked unconscious in Reunited to get through to Yellow and Blue, he did fight every single Diamond in Change Your Mind (of which talking failed the most miserably with White, who only actually listened after Gem Steven quite literally physically proved to her that Pink was gone). Not to mention the corrupted gems (where only Centipeetdle was reasonable), Steven and the Stevens (while that did get resolved through talking somewhat, there was that massive Steven fight and it got followed by massive Steven disintegrations), talking went very poorly in The Return which lead to them all being imprisoned in Jailbreak, talking went very poorly in Are You My Dad? and only worked after being backed into a corner in I Am My Mom, so on and so forth. While Steven wants to default to talking things out, pretty much no gem actually humors him on it unless they don't have a choice (like when Peridot got backed into a corner in Catch and Release), there's a better offer (I Am My Mom to put "Rose Quartz" on trial), or until he's had enough talking and fighting with the gem to get through to them (Spinel being a great example, starting out fighting, becoming amiable upon recovering her memories, going back to fighting upon misinterpreting the situation, moving back to being reasoned with after Steven finally got through to her). If I'm not mistaken he's gotten into a fight with almost every single new gem he meets either from the very beginning (Jasper, the Rubies, Spinel, Emerald and her armada) or after a bit of talking gone wrong (Blue, Yellow, White, Lapis, Peridot, Bismuth, the Lapises in Future) outside of the Off Colors (who only didn't fight because the Rutiles saw them hiding from the scanners), the newly freed corrupted gems (because most of them were former Crystal Gems already amenable to humans and those who weren't saw the Diamonds there and didn't push it), Holly Blue and the Amethysts (because they were performing a heist and that would've defeated the purpose of sneaking in to free Greg), the Rose Quartzes (because the situation was different in Future), the Pearls (Yellow and Blue Pearl weren't meant to fight nor were ever in a position where they would've, Volleyball had no reason to fight in Future), and the Zircons (because they were facilitating "Rose Quartz's" criminal trial). It's kind of baffling SU has a reputation for resolving problems exclusively through talking when talking actually makes half the SU and SUF problems worse, and there's a fight every episode to every other episode that's gem-centric
fun fact: at 24:46 there are 3 Connies in the scene. One on the hand and two in the crowd. (One above lion's head and one at the bottom right next to Kiki.) Also my favorite part about Rose/Pink's story is you get to see her character development in reverse. You see where her story ended at the beginning and through the seasons go backwards to see her major faults and flaws through Steven learning more about her past, which, understandably, turns his, and the viewers', views about her upside down.
I'm so happy that you also liked all of the fusion with Steven, a lot of people hated their design especially Sunstone but I think they're amazing and fit perfectly
I actually love the ending and didn't know it was actually rushed because it was canceled. I think the team did the best with what they had and I wouldn't change anything. Even when people hate on Future, i just cant by how much each episode speaks to me peroanally.
9:06 it kinda always interests me that people wanted it to be Lars, but keep forgetting that the only one who could contact Lars is Steven through Lion, so there's no way Lars and the Off-Colors could've actually known this was happening given how quickly Diamond Days happened and Steven's only interaction with Lion being through a melon that couldn't enter the pocket dimension, haha
I miss this time so much. I was there since the beginning. Looking back at certain scenes like the last episode makes me tear up by how beautiful and awesome it was.
Im so glad they understand the show enough to see why an epic battle with White was never going to be the outcome. Even if it was quick, White was a simple character to start and intended to be so, so as soon as Steven just by existing is able to give her proof that she’s wrong and imperfect when her whole worldview is based on her being perfect, everything changes. She and the diamonds weren’t “redeemed” at the end, they just became open to change and how they’ve been wrong. They can begin to become better people. And they’re moreso meant to be a metaphor for a broken toxic family than be read literally as an evil big bad dictatorship with how they treat each other and other gems.Steven universe the show is all about healing and relationships and individualism (how you’re more than a cog in a machine and you’re unique and important on your own), and Steven the character brings that by being himself, someone different. It’s a huge queer allegory with Steven’s character, but it can represent anyone different who doesn’t fit the mold who has the ability to bring about change for the better.
Just a side note, cause a don't know if y'all noticed, but the temple that the gems and Steven live is built in the image of the obsidian fusion of them
Damn, I didn't realize you guys have reached this on youtube. Love this series so much, im still so glad you enjoyed the episode. ps: i would like to once again beg yall to do a Percy Jackson TV show reaction
I think Future gave the series a great rounded ending. It provided answers to gaps in the lore and showed the aftermath of a child hero- which I've literally never seen done before. Everything came full circle. Yes, some episodes are silly and yes it's not the same- but was it ever advertised to be 100% serious and the exact same series- no! It's an epilogue, and as much as I understand the hate behind certain episodes they provide more info about minor characters and say goodbye to those we love. It was needed, imo.
@@pieflower6419 I'm not the biggest fan of the Future finale but overall it was still a great series, definitely better than season 5 at least in my opinion
@kokopium8003 I love Future as well. It's too relatable for me to hate it. Also, i think it filled in many of the questions had and rounded out some characters. I love seeing Steven grow up
I have become so obsessed with this series to the point where I love almost everything about it, I care for this show so much to the point where I would and have argued as to why there aren’t any filler episodes.
The finale was so epic and emotional. White Diamond is a dark villain, the fusions were incredible and the songs were beautiful. I enjoyed watching Steven Universe with you guys 😭😭😭✨️✨️✨️🥹🥹🥹
I'm really glad that they liked the new fusions. I was afraid that they wouldn't like Rainbow 2.0 or Sunstone because as far as I can remember when this came out nobody liked them. I never understood why, I think they perfectly fit the characters that fuse together for them
Rebecca Sugar is Jewish and the show was built around the concept that people can always be forgiven and earn that forgiveness and be better as people (as well as her wanting children to have some good queer representation as a bisexual nonbinary woman). You guessed right that the divisiveness came from people who wanted the diamonds defeated, shattered, and the entire system immediatley dismantled and all gems liberated. But the show hasnt been about defeating some big bad, its always been about growth and relationships. Anyway i like future but I dont think it gets better than this episode, though its certainly still enjoyable. I look forward to your reactions and im glad you've enjoyed it!
Dude I had the same reaction as you guys while watching this, Can't believe your guy's reaction the Steven Universe is over (The original, not future and movie)
Obsidian (the version with Rose Quartz in the mix) was the mystery giant gem fusion that was featured in the play in Historical Friction back in S2. This same fusion is also the inspiration for the Temple where they live. And because it's Steven, the new versions of Obsidian and Rainbow Quartz look much different. And the real life obsidian is volcanic glass. Hence why the fusion Obsidian is able to produce lava.
4:06 I feel like this is a reference for cartoon network about the garnet wedding. "If we allow gay couples for one show, then we'll have to allow it for every other show"
Honestly the Steven Universe fandom was super toxic back when it was on air, now it's fairly chill but of course has it's toxicity still, but fans would fight on everything. Yes the ending is rushed, but this is pretty much all they had at the time and they had to tie up all the loose ends (or most of them), and they did that in what I feel is a satisfying way. A lot of people wanted the diamonds to be shattered or punished but that's not what Steven would do, of course he would try to change the diamonds.
@@darkmelodies2694 it's probably because I went scrolling through the comments. The fact that the arguments are still the same and are so dismissive of the story though hahaha idk it's funny in a weird and kinda pathetic way.
Random question to the fans here, thoughts on that Pink was like "Love" or something, but we also clearly see quite a bit of Rage from her. Maybe she's actually something between the two, like "Passion"? Asking it here since they already watched the series and is uploading it bit by bit.
We could have additional episodes on how Steven fused with the rest of the CG, but this is the best Rebecca Sugar could come up with thanks to executive meddling. I do love how Rainbow 2.0 and Sunstone came out with their personalities: Rainbow 2.0 - aka Mary Poppins! Sunstone - a walking, talking caricature of those 90's after-school special character who advises children to report bullying and say no to drugs.
Fun fact, when the giant ship lands on the beach during the concert you can see at least 2 figures that look very much like Connie in the crowd already there. Just a neat animation error that was likely due to it being rushed
I just wanted to say how beautiful and meaningful it is that Steven's weapon is a shield, The fact that his weapon is his only defense not only makes him different from all the protagonists, but in several moments of the show it is a key element
Human Steven and Pink Steven fusing is my favorite scene of the whole episode. It’s such beautiful animation. I love that Garnet knew that Steven was a fusion the whole time. Even back to when Rose and Greg first tried to fuse. She said the fusion worked. Because it did eventually with Steven. 🥰🤩
I think you guys nailed it! The two main complaints I've gathered from fans about the ending (not that I've explicitly searched for complaints, so I may be quite off-base here) were, as you said, (1) it felt rushed, and (2) it was unjust because the "villains" were not punished or overthrown or made to explicitly apologize. For fans like me, who had no idea of the drama behind the scenes, it DID feel particularly rushed, but that didn't really bother me, especially because I think we already knew there'd be a follow-up. As for (2), I've never felt that way, and I think you got it exactly right when you said that the show wasn't ABOUT fighting, or punishing "evil" "villains", but instead about (mostly) nonviolent conflict resolution. The resolution, though rushed, was completely in line with the overarching themes of the show -- and I like to think that in the future, the diamonds will do as much as they possibly can to change and make amends for what they've done. Anyway, I'm glad you loved the ending on its own terms.
Many think that after Garnet's wedding, Rebeca was starting to fight to have Steven's episodes, however she was fighting for the series long before! I know if the series could have been done the way Rebecca wanted it would be a thousand times better, but anyway I loved the result!!
- 2 new Steven Fusions that being Rainbow Quartz 2.0 who is voiced by Alastair James who also voices Britt (Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series), a burly guy (Rumble), & a few more while Sunstone is voiced by Shoniqua Shandai who also plays Shyrell (The Guest Book), Angie (Harlem), & many more, but all together makes Obsidian which fun fact the Crystal Temple is based on it which they originally wanted to be called the Obsidian Temple & was actually first seen by William Dewey - the scene of Steven reuniting with his gem from making them whole again was guest-animated by James Baxter - When Blue Diamond goes to meet Yellow Diamond she pose while sitting down is similar to Gendo Ikari's iconic pose from Neon Genesis Evangelion, both Peridot & Garnet both have star-shaped visors just like Kamina & Simon from Gurren Lagann, & when Pink’s ship crushes the Crystal Gems is like Monty Pythons Circus iconic foot
Ill admit i was angry about this ending when i first watched it as well, but that was just because at tue time I wasnt aware that it was canceled. I thought that they had just simply rushed it as a kind of copout. Now that i know that they didnt have a choice, im just impressed that they were able to do as much as they did with thebtime they had. Well done, Rebecca Sugar! 👍👍👍
i can finally tell the joke I've been wanting to about the Diamonds!! They represent the mind, but most importantly, the diamonds represent your racist aunts who you have to patiently explain things to

Ah cool detail. Always learning new things about this show.
That's such a cool detail. I always wonder why Pink such a prominent colour to White
Another interesting fact pink is not visible on the light wavelength spectrum.
I never thought of it that way, but I love it 💝
Yeah, Diamond are pink either due to sheer pressure being higher than normal, or due to a radioactive environment. Both fits.
I don't know if y'all know this but Obsidian is the statue of the Gem that is over Steven's house.
Oh- wtf
I noticed 2
Also Obsidian 2.0, while mostly identical to the original, has Stevens clothing one one Hand, which ist funny, cause Steven does His laundry one one of the Statues hands.
In light of that, Obsidian's sword can be seen in season one. Twice, actually. Once in Bubble Buddies and once in Ocean's Gem

He's Steven. and he's always been Steven.
i didnt
Agreed. I loved the ending. It was a catharsis much needed. And when you think about it, fighting a war for hundreds of years didn't help, running away for hundreds of years didn't help, just talking and listening helped so much faster. The whole point of the show.
@@watershipup7101last episode is so sad, because it shows how much pain everyone went through
Also the Diamonds do get comeuppance.
White possessing Blue and Yellow Diamond still creeps me out to this day. Especially Blue's scream of pain at the end.
Two of the core themes of this show are “People change,” and “Fighting isn’t the solution to most problems.” Of course Steven wasnt going to bubble White Diamond
True, I'm glad they stuck to the lesson even with the time constraints
And even if he did, those that are loyal, which are most gems will retaliate and start another war
Exactly!
cute intention
They are not misunderstood people waiting to be friends like SU wants you to think.
the way Steven shouts "SHE’S GONE!" is the result of all the trauma, anger, and pressure that the gems put on Steven with living up to Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz, with how every homeworld gem only seeing Steven as his mother this is the bottle exploding
i really like the reunion of Lars and Sadie, they are one of the first characters Rebecca Sugar made since they showed up on the pilot pitch episode so seeing these two with both having hair color change is phenomenal
@@cniknik9863 its white diamond being forgiven the real problem here. She should have some sort of exile

I find White Diamond as a character to be really interesting. It’s said that she knows everything about every gem, as they all come from her, so the idea of her being wrong about Steven is so catastrophic to her sense of being that it completely breaks her will. Steven defeated White Diamond by existing.
I love how white diamonds design is all the colours mixed together but at their brightest form making her fully white

@@SADIE_Maybe_SADISTIC seriously, a pure diamond with an army can't dismantle homeworld, what makes them think a half human CHILD with 7 gems could?
Okay, so what happened is this:
Steven is a fusion of his human half and his gem half, and they both need each other to function.
When the Great Diamond Authority officially formed, White Diamond established laws and rules to govern and essentially shape Gem society to her own design, an influence that lasted for untold eons all the way to the present."
So my guess is: Gemworld naturally generated this "gem" species, eventually forming a single White Diamond, Blue and Yellow Diamond after that, and lastly Pink Diamond.
9:15. Peridot figured out where to put her star!
23:18. Nice callback to the pilot.
26:38. Amethyst “Hey, sis.”
Your reaction to Obsydian was so me THE most EPIC fusion ever!
Did you notice that Obsydian is the same statue next to their house where the mountain is? She was practically revealed in episode 1 lol
I'm surprised they didn't notice/mention that.
Obsidion and her sword is by far the most badass thing in the show
Their sword reminds of the Great Flameblade from Breath of the Wild.
(SPOILER FREE EXPLANATION)*
A regular Steven Universe season has an episode pickup of 25/26, with the exception of season 1 since it consisted of 2 pickups.
Incase no one recognized. The Temple Steven lives in, is shaped like Obsidian, and the only gems that get rooms are the ones that make up Obsidian.
🎵 You won, and she chose you 🎵
🎵 And she loved you and she’s GOOOOOONNNE!!! 🎵
Not the first person to do that meme, but it felt appropriate 😅
Steven's identity crisis really hit home for young queer people (myself included) - and especially trans and non-binary people.
Steven knew who he was inside, but being surrounded by guardians like the Diamonds who are so powerful and all-knowing, can instill so much doubt.
"You do not look like this, you do not sound like this, you're just acting like a child."
"I only want you to be yourself. If you can't do that, I'll do it for you."
Constantly being told by them that how he identified, how he looked, how he behaved was wrong or childish or just not possible.
Fun to note Peridot and Lapis outfits are referencing the anime Gurren Lagaan. Kamina and Simon.
Cartoon Network couldn’t ruin the heart that Rebecca and her crew gave this finale. I always tear up ❤
CN loved to do bingo cards for big SU events. Most of them were normal, with a mix of stuff real and fake, but the bingo card they did for Change Your Mind (also called the Battle of Heart and Mind) was entirely true. All 25 squares came true. They really had us going with this one!
Giant Mecha Battle - the Diamonds' ships combined
Pink Diamond Flashback - the episode opens with it
White Diamond Powers - projection much?
Pebbles - they only show up briefly when Steven and Connie get changed back into their normal clothes
Jasper Returns - right at the end and she doesn't get a speaking role but she's there
Diamond Fight - Yellow vs Blue
"If Every Porkchop Were Perfect..." - changes Yellow's mind
Steven Takes a Bubble Bath - technically true lol
Connie Versus Pearl - in White's ship, Pearl is possessed
Steven and Garnet Fuse - meet Sunstone!
Lars Meets Lion - really an emotional connection
Steven and Pearl Fuse - meet Rainbow Quartz 2.0!
Free: New Song - we got three: Let Me Ska My Van Into Your Heart; We Are the Crystal Gems (CYM Version); Change Your Mind
Blue Diamond Cries - kind of a given but yeah
Steven Uses a New Power - fusing with poofed Gems!
A Giant Woman - OBSIDIAN!!! Aka the Temple!
Someone Breaks Out Of Jail - right away pretty much
Bungacowa! - Sunstone says it as they're climbing the mech
An Out Of Body Experience - Steven is separated from his Gem
Alien Creature - that wormy dude at the beginning
Someone Breaks the Fourth Wall - "Now remember kids, if you ever have to deal with a bully, be sure to tell an adult" -Sunstone
Peridot, Savior of Homeworld - "I, Peridot, return not as your servant, but as your SAVIOR! I rule the skies!" -Peridot
Yellow Diamond Cries - that's not Blue's power, honey
Someone Gets a New Look - not just someONE: Amethyst, Pearl, Garnet, Lapis, Peridot, Sadie, and Jasper all get new looks!
Steven and Amethyst Fuse - Steven discovers a new power with this one
Before this episode came out they put out a bingo card full of things like "Bungacowa!" and such that seemed unusual in preparation. Then the episode came out and the card was full by the end.
"how many times did you lock her in here?"
*"How many times did you make her cry?"*
Oh it was so cute seeing her have the lil clothes as rings
Been here since the start, what a journey, and thank you all for all the great reactions :)
11:25 "They just got Marcelined dude." was probably the best line in this video 😭
*_𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘_*
(One above lion's head and one at the bottom right next to Kiki.)
Also my favorite part about Rose/Pink's story is you get to see her character development in reverse.
It’s amazing how fast you finished Season 5. Time for the Movie and Future (the latter of which I don’t hate as much as many others)
I enjoyed watching Steven Universe with you guys
😭😭😭✨️✨️✨️🥹🥹🥹
There's comments already pulling out Stalin and Hitler as references to Yellow and Blue. It hasn't changed at all
@@wonderstuck-gg Sadly I wish I could say I was surprised by that. Maybe I just don't see it much because I actively ignore it. 🤣
@@darkmelodies2694 it's probably because I went scrolling through the comments. The fact that the arguments are still the same and are so dismissive of the story though hahaha idk it's funny in a weird and kinda pathetic way.
@@wonderstuck-gg Fair. Toxic fans are gonna be toxic I guess. 🤷♀
@@wonderstuck-ggAlready?! Sheesh!😒
Random question to the fans here, thoughts on that Pink was like "Love" or something, but we also clearly see quite a bit of Rage from her. Maybe she's actually something between the two, like "Passion"? Asking it here since they already watched the series and is uploading it bit by bit.
I personally love this finale a lot. It gets criticized and a lot of the criticisms ive seen are fair, but i still really enjoy it
We could have additional episodes on how Steven fused with the rest of the CG, but this is the best Rebecca Sugar could come up with thanks to executive meddling. I do love how Rainbow 2.0 and Sunstone came out with their personalities:
Rainbow 2.0 - aka Mary Poppins!
Sunstone - a walking, talking caricature of those 90's after-school special character who advises children to report bullying and say no to drugs.
Fun fact, when the giant ship lands on the beach during the concert you can see at least 2 figures that look very much like Connie in the crowd already there. Just a neat animation error that was likely due to it being rushed
iirc there's also two versions of Sadie's mom and an older looking Onion
*Me, having watched the episode a dozen times:*
"I can't see their reactions through my own tears."
This finale gets me eveery time.
I cant believe this is the first time ive seen you guys react to this episode, thats crazy.
The obsidian fight gets me every time
The final episode is here, I’m readyy🙏🏽
I just wanted to say how beautiful and meaningful it is that Steven's weapon is a shield, The fact that his weapon is his only defense not only makes him different from all the protagonists, but in several moments of the show it is a key element
Human Steven and Pink Steven fusing is my favorite scene of the whole episode. It’s such beautiful animation. I love that Garnet knew that Steven was a fusion the whole time. Even back to when Rose and Greg first tried to fuse. She said the fusion worked. Because it did eventually with Steven. 🥰🤩
Honestly, thanks for watching this series. Its helped me fall in love with it all over again
Anyway, I'm glad you loved the ending on its own terms.
u might not have noticed but the temple is a statue of obsidian! but the steven edition fusion is flat chested lol
Many think that after Garnet's wedding, Rebeca was starting to fight to have Steven's episodes, however she was fighting for the series long before! I know if the series could have been done the way Rebecca wanted it would be a thousand times better, but anyway I loved the result!!
- 2 new Steven Fusions that being Rainbow Quartz 2.0 who is voiced by Alastair James who also voices Britt (Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series), a burly guy (Rumble), & a few more while Sunstone is voiced by Shoniqua Shandai who also plays Shyrell (The Guest Book), Angie (Harlem), & many more, but all together makes Obsidian which fun fact the Crystal Temple is based on it which they originally wanted to be called the Obsidian Temple & was actually first seen by William Dewey
- the scene of Steven reuniting with his gem from making them whole again was guest-animated by James Baxter
- When Blue Diamond goes to meet Yellow Diamond she pose while sitting down is similar to Gendo Ikari's iconic pose from Neon Genesis Evangelion, both Peridot & Garnet both have star-shaped visors just like Kamina & Simon from Gurren Lagann, & when Pink’s ship crushes the Crystal Gems is like Monty Pythons Circus iconic foot
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this scene. Goosebumps across my whole body every time.
i can finally tell the joke I've been wanting to about the Diamonds!! They represent the mind, but most importantly, the diamonds represent your racist aunts who you have to patiently explain things to
CONNIE HAS SOME ARM STRENGTH LIKE HANGING ON PERIDOTS THING ONE HANDED FOR THAT LONG
I'm not sure if you guys ever saw the pilot but the "What's your excuse?" line he used was exactly what he said in the pilot during a very crucial moment and this was a callback to it
This review coming out today feels like a great birthday gift for me 😊
that was how i reacted when his gem reformed, it settled on pink just long enough for me to absolutely shit myself
You can hear pink Diamond laughing with Steven when he fused back together
This episode gets me emotional always
The trans symbolism around the whole Pink Diamond situation is super apparent in White's monologue about knowing who "she" "really is"
