Nice variety...Seems to have grown fairly quickly and has a great trunk...Pent-up Pruner Syndrome...Shapes up very well...Could not find this variety per 'Gold Leaf Dwarf Jade' nor 'Apollo'🤣...Great 'Thought for The Day'...Looks like it may have a soil top cover that look great against the developing Nebari...Thanks for sharing Tom, always entertaining and a great way to start the day...

Thanks Nathan! This is one of my more favorite trees especially not that it is getting some branch thickness to it. It tough to keep these trees very small - they love to grow!!
Search on Portulacaria Afra aurea which is what I think most of the folks selling them call it. It’s not one I see at Home Depot or the box stores although I’m not sure why. It’s a great variety. I got this one from Etsy I believe. I’ll look up the seller, but he only had this one.
I do put a top cover on many of them - a finer sand most often because the smaller grain size looks better and helps to keep the soil in the pot when I dunk them into water occasionally.
Thanks for the kind words and best of luck with finding one. I can always send you some cuttings - this variety grows extremely well from cuttings.
Thanks for commenting my friend! 🙏❤️🌲

Enjoyed the video and commentary Tom. When I first seen this tree it looks like the Keebler elf tree from the commercials. Such a cute little tree. I get what you are saying about looking at your trees daily. I finally got my Chinese elm up away from my cat bcuz he kept pruning them back. So I got them in their final resting pace and they started to show little bud growth, but after a week I started seeing alot of little webs and they were infested with spider mites. I treated them and now look at them daily along with all the plants that are near them. Thanks for sharing.

Keebler Elf Tree!!!! Yes , I totally see that now! Thanks.
Good luck with your Chinese elm. I haven’t had many issues with spider mites luckily, but I did last year with this tree. I could tell something was up because the leaves all started looking sort of dull and deflated and just not healthy. I just took it to the sink and really hit it with soap spray and then washed it off running my fingers thoroughly through each leaf and that got rid of them. Come to think of it, that has happened to those same tree twice. For some reason they seem to like this one best.
Best of luck with your tree and in dealing with them!! 🙏❤️🌲

Interesting variety...I've never seen it before..... i kinda like that pot, it compliments the color of the trunk. Although a round pot might work better for the shape of the tree...🤷‍♂️. My PA'S barely get any water during the winter while they're in the basement..

Thanks Dave. It’s a great variety - one of my favorites. It’s got a softer growth to it until it hardens off to green, but the trunk and branches thicken quickly on it which is nice.
I get you on the pot - I do like it, but just want something more shallow. It makes caring for it easier however. I like the idea of trying a round one.
Do your PAs get lots of light in the basement? Mine keep growing although very slowly compared to the others. My crassula grow like crazy however - they seem to love 50-60!

@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom PA'S are definitely growing slower in my basement under LED grow lights at 60F....crassula jades are growing like weeds..

I am looking forward to being able to develop a three-pad tree, very nice work. Any thought of pulling down the bottom left pad with a tension wire? I don't know if it would work. I'm just curious if you have any ideas there.

Oh yes, I have thought about that. I am toying with the idea of shortening all the branches tighter to the trunk, picking the basic ones that I want to keep, and then regrowing the edges. The other idea is to as you mention lower the branches and bring it in a hit but not as much.
I prefer to do deep structural pruning when the trees can be outside in the summer since they get very strong in regular sun, so likely will do one of these in the spring. In the winter, I mostly prune and enjoy the shape as is.

Looks fantastic Tom. Great work, and the educational banter really helps. I’m curious as to whether you are talking while pruning, or is this done as a voiceover.

      Thanks Steve! 🙏
That is an excellent question. I almost always do a voiceover because I just find it much more productive than trying to get it all reasonably correct in one shot. My brain is just much slower these days and it helps me make the show intelligible! 🤣
I guess another reason is for editing speed which I’m sure that you understand as a fellow creator. I typically need about 2.5x the length of the video for total production which is quite good I think. Basically pass 1 is do the work, pass 2 is talk about the work, and editing (mostly cutting) if needed.
Anyhow, that’s my process. Thanks for watching and asking a great question! ❤️🌲
