I do a lot of work with these. They are very forgiving! They sprout new shoots fairly quick from big chops. Cuttings, big or small, root super easy. No special conditions needed (example: dont require root hormone powder) Only downside with these is, if shoots are left to grow too leggy, the lower leaves die off. This can make ramification, interesting! Those are the biggest leaves i've seen on a Crassula Saurcocaulis too. Mine are half the size and darker green. The flowers, usually pink and white, dont smell very nice so have fun with those lol
Thanks for the details. They have started to grow new shoots and it’s wild - lots of branches coming out along the rim of the hard cut. I can’t wait to see how it grows! ❤️🌲
Darn it! I don’t have this plant! Now I want to get a Crassula sarcocaulis for myself. I’ll have to look for it (I’ve never seen it around in nurseries, so I’ll check online) because it’s such a beautiful plant. Thanks, Tom, hugs, Eli.
I hope so! I lost the main tree sadly, but the others appear to be doing very well. Mable is a Velcro pug through and through - she follows me around wherever I go! 🤣
All excellent points Tom...I don't mind watching someone work on a $10,000 tree because its interesting to see those results, but I actually learn a lot more from videos working with preBonsai material...We are all going to lose trees, make mistakes and revel in our successes...Like you said, "Bonsai are never really finished...", that is a fundamental principal all Bonsai enthusiasts eventually must come to terms with...Looking forward to watching this forests progress...Thanks for sharing...
You are most welcome and thank you for watching and commenting!! I would so afraid to work on a 10k tree. I see folks at collections working on these incredible trees and it is very humbling.
@@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom I too would be afraid to even cut even a small branche on a 10k plant😨 If one day I have one if would be because I grown it of a have the money to pay an experience gardener to maintain it
Wow, that's amazing. I've been hunting for this variety for a while....❤❤ I think Nigel has videos of this variety and has done big cuts on it with succ..
Inspiring and I will keep my eyes open to find this species as I think the trunk and the small leaves are attractive. Cheers from Sweden (also subed 😀)
Thank for watching and commenting!!! They are nice plant, I can’t wait to see how this one develops. It’s so exciting to me that people from all over the world watch my bonsai videos. If you had told me this two years ago I would have scoffed at the idea. 🙏❤️🌲
It is interesting, but very old ones seem to have more of a brown trunk / bark. So, perhaps it takes time or what I’ve seen was another variety. It’s definitely quite different than any other jades I’ve worked with so far.
Absolutely - so far so good, the forest is sprouting new growth and growing aerial roots like crazy. I do think this variety likes to grow from leaves 🍃 Thanks for the comment!!
It look good :) The pop of color with the pot is a nice touch. I observed myself the effect of a rock in my crassula pots. The ones with rocks for stabilisation conserve the moisture longer than without. It seem moss and rocks in a pot can act as a kind of mulching Fun fact 2 year ago when we had a dry hot summer, I saw that the only small plants that survived well were the tiny succulents (mostly Sedum) nestled in moss between the rocks and stone wall.
Thanks for the comment and watching! My experience matches yours - using the rocks has many advantages! I’ve yet to find a top soil / top layer that works as well as plain rocks.
I bet they’ll do really good, I have some myself the biggest is only 6 inches tall, but when I trim them and I don’t pick up the cuttings they root and start growing without any problems, just like any other Crassula, i also bought a couple that had several trunks I just snapped them apart and replanted them and they are thriving. I really enjoyed watching this video and can’t wait to see the updates.
Thanks for the info - they seem to be growing many aerial roots so perhaps I need to start watering them more. In any case, lots of activity so I think they will survive. Thanks for watching and for the information!n 🙏❤️🌲
Haha! Once you see the results with jades, it makes it easy! It’s very counterintuitive, but making the tree shorter makes it look bigger! I’d love to develop some of these larger trees, but I just don’t have the space. And honestly, I enjoy being able to pick up 2 or 3 trees at a time. Everything is easier when they are smaller except for watering which is not as much an issue with jade. I suppose wiring would also be a hassle at this scale, but I don’t do that either. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙏❤️🌲
these do not smell like honey or jelly lol. When i first got my sarcocaulis it was in flower, and for a few days every time i opened my greenhouse it smelled like dead animal. i really thought a rat or something died in the greenhouse and looked around for it. Only a few days later did i realize it was the jade flowers. This as with other jades have quite an off smell to the flowers that is not pleasant in any way. They do look great tho!
Nobody at the local bonsai group will take free jades or portucaria afra..BUT they disappear within minutes at the local cactus and succulent goup meetings. 😂❤

If in uk try tropical Britain or corseside not big plants but they grow quickly and you can get broad leaf or regular and pink or white flowers
Thanks, but I'm in Italy.
Thanks for watching and commenting Eli!! 🙏❤️🌲
It’s a neat plant for sure. Good luck finding one. ☝️
If this propagates like regular jades you're going to create an amazing forest and may bloom to boot, nice..."Hi" Mable/Mabel...Thanks for Sharing...

A real 'Dwarf Jade'!!😁😁
🤣 Indeed! I think this one may work well with a forest as it seems to want to grow straight up.

interesting. I have a small branch of this species and I didn't expect such a smooth and semi transparent trunk as this.

I have no experience with this type of crassula, buy now I want one! Diggin the forest pretty hard, brother
Thanks - let’s hope it recovers. I think it will be quite something in flower!!
Ha just bought same thing a few weeks ago
The flowers 🌸 look amazing.
Every time you lop off the entire top of a tree I cringe. I haven’t been brave enough yet. I really enjoy your videos.

Another good video, thanks! So many adds tho. Is that not in your control ?
Not under my control - I haven’t even monetize the channel. I think it’s due to the length of the videos perhaps?

Hmmmm - perhaps I need to branch out. This is a great idea that I had not even considered.
@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom my local bonsai group frowns on succulent as bonsai. Typical old school bonsai snobs...🤷♂️
